Banana diagrams as functions of geodesic distance

We extend the study of banana diagrams in coordinate representation to the case of curved space-times. If the space is harmonic, the Green functions continue to depend on a single variable -- the geodesic distance. But now this dependence can be somewhat non-trivial. We demonstrate that, like in the flat case, the coordinate differential equations for powers of Green functions can still be expressed as determinants of certain operators. Therefore, not-surprisingly, the coordinate equations remain straightforward -- while their reformulation in terms of momentum integrals and Picard-Fuchs equations can seem problematic. However we show that the Feynman parameter representation can also be generalized, at least for banana diagrams in simple harmonic spaces, so that the Picard-Fuchs equations retain their Euclidean form with just a minor modification. A separate story is the transfer to the case when the Green function essentially depends on several rather than a single argument. In this case, we provide just one example, that the equations are still there, but conceptual issues in the more general case will be discussed elsewhere.

Panel discussion: What {\it don't} we know about confinement?

The participants in this discussion session of the QCHS 9 meeting were each asked the following question: "What would be the most useful piece of information that you could obtain, by whatever means, that would advance your own program, and/or our general understanding of confinement?" This proceedings contains a brief summary of each panel member's contribution to the discussion, provided by the panel members themselves.

Covariant derivative expansion of Yang-Mills effective action at high temperatures

Integrating out fast varying quantum fluctuations about Yang--Mills fields A_i and A_4, we arrive at the effective action for those fields at high temperatures. Assuming that the fields A_i and A_4 are slowly varying but that the amplitude of A_4 is arbitrary, we find a non-trivial effective gauge invariant action both in the electric and magnetic sectors. Our results can be used for studying correlation functions at high temperatures beyond the dimensional reduction approximation, as well as for estimating quantum weights of classical static configurations such as dyons.

Do Instantons of the CP(N-1) Model Melt?

In the two-dimensional CP(N-1) model one can parametrize exact many-instanton solutions via N `constituents' (called `zindons'). This parameterization allows, in principle, a complete `melting' of individual instantons. The model is therefore well suited to study whether dynamics prefers a dilute or a strongly overlapping ensemble of instantons. We study the statistical mechanics of instantons both analytically and numerically. We find that at N=2 the instanton system collapses into zero-size instantons. At N=3,4 we find that well-isolated instantons are dynamically preferred though 15-25% of instantons have a considerable overlap with others.

The Nonperturbative Color Meissner Effect in a Two-Flavor Color Superconductor

Color superconductivity in QCD breaks the SU(3) color gauge group down to SU(2), inducing masses in five of the eight gluons. This is a dynamical Higgs effect, in which the diquark condensate acts as the vacuum expectation value of a composite scalar field. In order to analyze this effect at low quark density, when gaps are large and generated nonperturbatively, we use instanton-induced quark interactions augmented with gauge-invariant interactions between quarks and perturbative gluons. The five gluon masses are found from the static limit of the relevant polarization operators, in which transversality is maintained via the Nambu-Goldstone modes of broken color symmetry. Working in the microscopic theory we calculate these masses to one-loop order and estimate their density dependence. Finally, we speculate that the Meissner effect may postpone the onset of color superconductivity to higher matter density than estimated previously.

On Statistical Mechanics of Instantons in the CP^{N_c-1} Model

We introduce an explicit form of the multi-instanton weight including also instanton--anti-instanton interactions for arbitrary $N_c$ in the two-dimensional $CP^{N_c-1}$ model. To that end, we use the parametrization of multi-instantons in terms of instanton `constituents' which we call `zindons' for short. We study the statistical mechanics of zindons analytically (by means of the Debye-Hückel approximation) and numerically (running a Metropolis algorithm). Though the zindon parametrization allows for a complete `melting' of instantons we find that, through a combination of dynamical and purely geometric factors, a dominant portion of topological charge is residing in well-separated instantons and anti-instantons.

Instanton-Induced Interactions in Finite Density QCD

We consider the finite density, zero-temperature behaviour of quark matter in the instanton picture. Since the instanton-induced interactions are attractive in both $\bar{q}q$ and $qq$ channels, a competition ensues between phases of matter with condensation in either or both. It results in chiral symmetry restoration due to the onset of diquark condensation, a `colour superconductor', at finite density.

Light Quarks in the Instanton Vacuum at Finite Baryon Density

We consider the finite density, zero-temperature behaviour of quark matter in the instanton picture. Since the instanton-induced interactions are attractive in both $\bar{q}q$ and $qq$ channels, a competition ensues between phases of matter with condensation in either or both. It results in chiral symmetry restoration due to the onset of diquark condensation, a `colour supercondutor', at finite density. Also present is a state with both manners of condensation, however this phase is found to be thermodynamically disfavoured for equilibrium matter. Properties of quark matter in each phase are discussed, with emphasis on the microscopic effects of the effective mass and superconducting energy gap.

Screening of Fractional Charges in (2+1)-dimensional QED

We show that the logarithmically rising static potential between opposite-charged sources in two dimensions is screened by dynamical fields even if the probe charges are fractional, in units of the charge of the dynamical fields. The effect is due to quantum mechanics: the wave functions of the screening charges are superpositions of two bumps localized both near the opposite- and the same-charge sources, so that each of them gets exactly screened.

Nucleon Parton Distributions at Low Normalization Point in the Large N_c Limit

At large N_c the nucleon can be viewed as a soliton of the effective chiral lagrangian. This picture of nucleons allows a consistent nonperturbative calculation of the leading-twist parton distributions at a low normalization point. We derive general formulae for the polarized and unpolarized distributions (singlet and non-singlet) in the chiral quark-soliton model. The consistency of our approach is demonstrated by checking the baryon number, isospin and total momentum sum rules, as well as the Bjorken sum rule. We present numerical estimates of the quark and antiquark distributions and find reasonable agreement with parametrizations of the data at a low normalization point. In particular, we obtain a sizeable fraction of antiquarks, in agreement with the phenomenological analysis.

Sphaleron transitions in the Minimal Standard Model and the upper bound for the Higgs Mass

We calculate the dissipation of the baryon number after the electroweak phase transition due to thermal fluctuations above the sphaleron barrier. We consider not only the classical Boltzmann factor but also fermionic and bosonic one-loop contributions. We find that both bosonic and especially fermionic fluctuations can considerably suppress the transition rate. Assuming the Langer--Affleck formalism for this rate, the condition that an initial baryon asymmetry must not be washed out by sphaleron transitions leads, in the Minimal Standard Model ($\sinθ_W=0$), to an upper bound for the Higgs mass in the range 60 to 75 GeV.

Non-Perturbative Isotropic Multi-Particle Production in Yang--Mills Theory

We use singular Euclidean solutions to find multi-particle production cross sections in field theories. We investigate a family of time-dependent O(3) symmetrical solutions of the Yang--Mills equations, which govern the isotropic high-energy gauge boson production. At low energies our approach reproduces the instanton-induced cross sections. For higher energies we get new results. In particular, we show that the cross section for isotropic multiparticle production remains exponentially small in the running gauge coupling constant. The result applies both to the baryon number violation in the electro-weak theory and to the QCD jet production. We find that the isotropic multi-gluon production cross section falls off approximately as a ninth power of energy but possibly might be observable
