Discovering the Higgs Bosons of Minimal Supersymmetry with Muons and a Bottom Quark

We investigate the prospects for the discovery at the CERN Large Hadron Collider of a neutral Higgs boson produced with one bottom quark followed by Higgs decay into a muon pair. We work within the framework of the minimal supersymmetric model. The dominant physics background from the production of $b μ^+μ^-$, $jμ^+μ^-$, j=g,u,d,s,c, and $b {\bar b} W^+W^-$ is calculated with realistic acceptance cuts. Promising results are found for the CP-odd pseudoscalar ($A^0$) and the heavier CP-even scalar ($H^0$) Higgs bosons with masses up to 600 GeV. This discovery channel with one energetic bottom quark greatly improves the discovery potential of the LHC beyond the inclusive channel $pp\to ϕ^0\to μ^+μ^- +X$.

Higgs-Boson Production in Association with Bottom Quarks at Next-to-Leading Order

We argue that the leading-order subprocess for Higgs-boson production in association with bottom quarks is (b\bar{b} -> H). This process is an important source of Higgs bosons with enhanced Yukawa coupling to bottom quarks. We calculate the corrections to this cross section at next-to-leading-order in 1/ln(m_H/m_b) and alpha_s and at next-to-next-to-leading order in 1/ln(m_H/m_b).

Higgs Decay to Top Quarks at Hadron Colliders

Higgs bosons which decay principally to top quarks, such as in the minimal supersymmetric model, produce a peak-dip structure in the $gg\to t\bar t$ invariant-mass spectrum. This structure is potentially observable at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. (see BNL theory home page http://penguin.phy.bnl.gov/bnl.html for recent preprints)

Final-State Interaction of Longitudinal Vector Bosons

In the standard Higgs model of electroweak symmetry breaking, the Higgs boson is associated with both vector-boson and fermion mass generation. In contrast, we discuss a two-Higgs-doublet model in which these masses are associated with two different scalar bosons. We show that the Higgs boson associated with vector-boson mass generation produces a {\it dip\/} in the cross section for $t\bar t\to ZZ$ via a final-state interaction. Such a dip will be difficult to observe at the LHC/SSC.
