The asymmetry of the dimension 2 gluon condensate: the zero temperature case

We provide an algebraic study of the local composite operators A_μA_ν-δ_{μν}/d A^2 and A^2, with d=4 the spacetime dimension. We prove that these are separately renormalizable to all orders in the Landau gauge. This corresponds to a renormalizable decomposition of the operator A_μA_νinto its trace and traceless part. We present explicit results for the relevant renormalization group functions to three loop order, accompanied with various tests of these results. We then develop a formalism to determine the zero temperature effective potential for the corresponding condensates, and recover the already known result for \neq 0, together with =0, a nontrivial check that the approach is consistent with Lorentz symmetry. The formalism is such that it is readily generalizable to the finite temperature case, which shall allow a future analytical study of the electric-magnetic symmetry of the condensate, which received strong evidence from recent lattice simulations by Chernodub and Ilgenfritz, who related their results to 3 regions in the Yang-Mills phase diagram.

Gribov no-pole condition, Zwanziger horizon function, Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion, boundary conditions, BRST breaking and all that

We aim to offer a kind of unifying view on two popular topics in the studies of nonperturbative aspects of Yang-Mills theories in the Landau gauge: the so-called Gribov-Zwanziger approach and the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion. Borrowing results from statistical thermodynamics, we show that imposing the Kugo-Ojima confinement criterion as a boundary condition leads to a modified yet renormalizable partition function. We verify that the resulting partition function is equivalent with the one obtained by Gribov and Zwanziger, which restricts the domain of integration in the path integral within the first Gribov horizon. The construction of an action implementing a boundary condition allows one to discuss the symmetries of the system in the presence of the boundary. In particular, the conventional BRST symmetry is softly broken.

A potential setup for perturbative confinement

A few years ago, 't Hooft suggested a way to discuss confinement in a perturbative fashion. The original idea was put forward in the Coulomb gauge at tree level. In recent years, the concept of a nonperturbative short distance linear potential also attracted phenomenological attention. Motivated by these observations, we discuss how a perturbative framework, leading to a linear piece in the potential, can be developed in a manifestly gauge and Lorentz invariant manner, which moreover enjoys the property of being renormalizable to all orders. We provide an effective action framework to discuss the dynamical realization of the proposed scenario in Yang-Mills gauge theory.

A gauge invariant infrared stabilization of 3D Yang-Mills gauge theories

We demonstrate that the inversion method can be a very useful tool in providing an infrared stabilization of 3D gauge theories, in combination with the mass operator $A^2$ in the Landau gauge. The numerical results will be unambiguous, since the corresponding theory is ultraviolet finite in dimensional regularization, making a renormalization scale or scheme obsolete. The proposed framework is argued to be gauge invariant, by showing that the nonlocal gauge invariant operator $A^2_{\min}$, which reduces to $A^2$ in the Landau gauge, could be treated in 3D, in the sense that it is power counting renormalizable in any gauge. As a corollary of our analysis, we are able to identify a whole set of powercounting renormalizable nonlocal operators of dimension two.

A purely algebraic construction of a gauge and renormalization group invariant scalar glueball operator

This paper presents a complete algebraic proof of the renormalizability of the gauge invariant $d=4$ operator $F_{μν}^2(x)$ to all orders of perturbation theory in pure Yang-Mills gauge theory, whereby working in the Landau gauge. This renormalization is far from being trivial as mixing occurs with other $d=4$ gauge variant operators, which we identify explicitly. We determine the mixing matrix $Z$ to all orders in perturbation theory by using only algebraic arguments and consequently we can uncover a renormalization group invariant by using the anomalous dimension matrix $Γ$ derived from $Z$. We also present a future plan for calculating the mass of the lightest scalar glueball with the help of the framework we have set up.

The Landau gauge gluon and ghost propagator in the refined Gribov-Zwanziger framework in 3 dimensions

In previous works, we have constructed a refined version of the Gribov-Zwanziger action in 4 dimensions, by taking into account a novel dynamical effect. In this paper, we explore the 3-dimensional case. Analogously as in 4 dimensions, we obtain a ghost propagator behaving like $1/p^2$ in the infrared, while the gluon propagator reaches a finite nonvanishing value at zero momentum. Simultaneously, a clear violation of positivity by the gluon propagator is also found. This behaviour of the propagators turns out be in agreement with the recent numerical simulations.

The effects of Gribov copies in 2D gauge theories

In previous works, we have shown that the Gribov-Zwanziger action, which implements the restriction of the domain of integration in the path integral to the Gribov region, generates extra dynamical effects which influence the infrared behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagator in SU(N) Yang-Mills gauge theories. The latter are in good agreement with the most recent lattice data obtained at large volumes, both in 4D and in 3D. More precisely, the gluon propagator is suppressed and does not vanish at zero momentum, while the ghost propagator keeps a 1/p^2 behaviour for p^2\approx0. Instead, in 2D, the lattice data revealed a vanishing zero momentum gluon propagator and an infrared enhanced ghost, in support of the usual Gribov-Zwanziger scenario. We will now show that the 2D version of the Gribov-Zwanziger action still gives results in qualitative agreement with these lattice data, as the peculiar infrared nature of 2D gauge theories precludes the analogue of the dynamical effect otherwise present in 4D and 3D. Simultaneously, we also observe that the Gribov-Zwanziger restriction serves as an infrared regulating mechanism.

Nonperturbative ghost dynamics in the maximal Abelian gauge

We construct the effective potential for the ghost condensate in the maximal Abelian gauge. This condensate is an order parameter for a global continuous symmetry, which is spontaneously broken since a nonvanishing value of lowers the vacuum energy. The associated Goldstone mode turns out to be unphysical.

New features of the gluon and ghost propagator in the infrared region from the Gribov-Zwanziger approach

So far, the infrared behavior of the gluon and ghost propagator based on the Gribov-Zwanziger approach predicted a positivity violating gluon propagator vanishing at zero momentum, and an infrared enhanced ghost propagator. However, recent data based on huge lattices have revealed a positivity violating gluon propagator which turns out to attain a finite nonvanishing value very close to zero momentum. At the same time the ghost propagator does not seem to be infrared enhanced anymore. We point out that these new features can be accounted for by yet unexploited dynamical effects within the Gribov-Zwanziger approach, leading to an infrared behavior in qualitatively good agreement with the new data.

The Gribov-Zwanziger action in the presence of the gauge invariant, nonlocal mass operator $Tr \int d^4x F_{μν} (D^2)^{-1} F_{μν}$ in the Landau gauge

We prove that the nonlocal gauge invariant mass dimension two operator $F_{μν} (D^2)^{-1} F_{μν}$ can be consistently added to the Gribov-Zwanziger action, which implements the restriction of the path integral's domain of integration to the first Gribov region when the Landau gauge is considered. We identify a local polynomial action and prove the renormalizability to all orders of perturbation theory by employing the algebraic renormalization formalism. Furthermore, we also pay attention to the breaking of the BRST invariance, and to the consequences that this has for the Slavnov-Taylor identity.

Infrared behavior of the gluon and ghost propagators in Yang-Mills theories

We provide a short discussion of the dimension two condensate and its influence on the infrared behaviour of the gluon propagator in the Landau gauge. Simultaneously, we pay attention to the issue of Gribov copies in the Landau gauge. We also briefly discuss a local, gauge invariant non-Abelian action with mass parameter, constructed from the dimension 2 operator $F_{μν} (D^2)^{-1} F_{μν}$.

A local non-Abelian gauge invariant action stemming from the nonlocal operator F 1/D^2 F

We report on the nonlocal gauge invariant operator of dimension two, F 1/D^2 F. We are able to localize this operator by introducing a suitable set of (anti)commuting antisymmetric tensor fields. Starting from this, we succeed in constructing a local gauge invariant action containing a mass parameter, and we prove the renormalizability to all orders of perturbation theory of this action in the linear covariant gauges using the algebraic renormalization technique. We point out the existence of a nilpotent BRST symmetry. Despite the additional (anti)commuting tensor fields and coupling constants, we prove that our model in the limit of vanishing mass is equivalent with ordinary massless Yang-Mills theories by making use of an extra symmetry in the massless case. We also present explicit renormalization group functions at two loop order in the MSbar scheme.

Quantum properties of a non-Abelian gauge invariant action with a mass parameter

We continue the study of a local, gauge invariant Yang-Mills action containing a mass parameter, which we constructed in a previous paper starting from the nonlocal gauge invariant mass dimension two operator F_{μν} (D^2)^{-1} F_{μν}. We return briefly to the renormalizability of the model, which can be proven to all orders of perturbation theory by embedding it in a more general model with a larger symmetry content. We point out the existence of a nilpotent BRST symmetry. Although our action contains extra (anti)commuting tensor fields and coupling constants, we prove that our model in the limit of vanishing mass is equivalent with ordinary massless Yang-Mills theories. The full theory is renormalized explicitly at two loops in the MSbar scheme and all the renormalization group functions are presented. We end with some comments on the potential relevance of this gauge model for the issue of a dynamical gluon mass generation.

Gribov ambiguities in the maximal Abelian gauge

The effects of the Gribov copies on the gluon and ghost propagators are investigated in SU(2) Euclidean Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge. By following Gribov's original approach, extended to the maximal Abelian gauge, we are able to show that the diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the characteristic Gribov type behavior. The off-diagonal component is found to be of the Yukawa type, with a dynamical mass originating from the dimension two gluon condensate, which is also taken into account. Furthermore, the off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits infrared enhancement. Finally, we make a comparison with available lattice data.

The infrared behavior of the gluon and ghost propagators in SU(2) Yang-Mills theory in the maximal Abelian gauge

We report on some recent analytical results on the behaviour of the gluon and ghost propagators in Euclidean SU(2) Yang-Mills theory quantized in the maximal Abelian gauge (MAG). This gauge is of particular interest for the dual superconductivity picture to explain color confinement. Two kinds of effects are taken into account: those arising from a treatment of Gribov copies in the MAG and those arising from a dynamical mass originating in a dimension two gluon condensate. The diagonal component of the gluon propagator displays the typical Gribov-type behaviour, while the off-diagonal component is of the Yukawa type due to the dynamical mass. These results are in qualitative agreement with available lattice data on the gluon propagators. The off-diagonal ghost propagator exhibits an infrared enhancement due to the Gribov restriction, while the diagonal one remains unaffected.
