Can backscattering off an impurity enhance the current?

It is well known that while forward scattering has no effect on the conductance of one-dimensional systems, backscattering off a static impurity suppresses the current. We study the effect of a time-dependent point impurity on the conductance of a one-channel quantum wire. At strong repulsive interaction (Luttinger liquid parameter g<1/2), backscattering renders the conductance greater than its value e^2/h in the absence of the impurity. A possible experimental realization of our model is a constricted Hall bar at fractional filling factors ν=1/(2n+1) with a time-dependent voltage at the constriction.

Critical exponents of the random-field O(N) model

The critical behavior of the random-field Ising model has been a puzzle for a long time. Different theoretical methods predict that the critical exponents of the random-field ferromagnet in D dimensions are the same as in the pure (D-2)-dimensional ferromagnet with the same number of the magnetization components. This result contradicts the experiments and simulations. We calculate the critical exponents of the random-field O(N) model with the (4+ε)-expansion and obtain values different from the critical exponents of the pure ferromagnet in 2+εdimensions. In contrast to the previous approaches we take into account an infinite set of relevant operators emerging in the problem. We demonstrate how these previously missed relevant operators lead to the breakdown of the (6-ε)-expansion for the random-field Ising model.

No quasi-long-range order in strongly disordered vortex glasses: a rigorous proof

The paper contains a rigorous proof of the absence of quasi-long-range order in the random-field O(N) model for strong disorder in the space of an arbitrary dimensionality. This result implies that quasi-long-range order inherent to the Bragg glass phase of the vortex system in disordered superconductors is absent as the disorder or external magnetic field is strong.

Quasi-long-range order in nematics confined in random porous media

We study the effect of random porous matrices on the ordering in nematic liquid crystals. The randomness destroys orientational lang-range order and drives the liquid crystal into a glass state. We predict two glass phases one of which possesses quasi-long-range order. In this state the correlation length is infinite and the correlation function of the order parameter obeys a power dependence on the distance. The small-angle light-scattering amplitude diverges but slower than in the bulk nematic. In the uniaxially strained porous matrices two new phases emerge. One type of strain induces an anisotropic quasi-long-range-ordered state while the other stabilizes nematic long-range order.

Quasi-long-range order in the random anisotropy Heisenberg model: functional renormalization group in 4-εdimensions

The large distance behaviors of the random field and random anisotropy O(N) models are studied with the functional renormalization group in 4-εdimensions. The random anisotropy Heisenberg (N=3) model is found to have a phase with the infinite correlation radius at low temperatures and weak disorder. The correlation function of the magnetization obeys a power law < m(x) m(y) >\sim |x-y|^{-0.62ε}. The magnetic susceptibility diverges at low fields as χ\sim H^{-1+0.15ε}. In the random field O(N) model the correlation radius is found to be finite at the arbitrarily weak disorder for any N>3. The random field case is studied with a new simple method, based on a rigorous inequality. This approach allows one to avoid the integration of the functional renormalization group equations.

Vortex Plasma in a Superconducting Film with Magnetic Dots

We consider a superconducting film, placed upon a magnetic dot array. Magnetic moments of the dots are normal to the film and randomly oriented. We determine how the concentration of the vortices in the film depends on the magnetic moment of a dot at low temperatures. The concentration of the vortices, bound to the dots, is proportional to the density of the dots and depends on the magnetization of a dot in a step-like way. The concentration of the unbound vortices oscillates about a value, proportional to the magnetic moment of the dots. The period of the oscillations is equal to the width of a step in the concentration of the bound vortices.

Quasi-long range order in the random anisotropy Heisenberg model

The large distance behaviors of the random field and random anisotropy Heisenberg models are studied with the functional renormalization group in $4-ε$ dimensions. The random anisotropy model is found to have a phase with the infinite correlation radius at low temperatures and weak disorder. The correlation function of the magnetization obeys a power law $<{\bf m}({\bf r}_1) {\bf m}({\bf r}_2)>\sim| {\bf r}_1-{\bf r}_2|^{-0.62ε}$. The magnetic susceptibility diverges at low fields as $χ\sim H^{-1+0.15ε}$. In the random field model the correlation radius is found to be finite at the arbitrarily weak disorder.

Stability of the Renormalization Group in the 2D Random Ising and Baxter Models with respect to the Replica Symmetry Breaking

We study the critical properties of the weakly disordered two-dimensional Ising and Baxter models in terms of the renormalization group (RG) theory generalized to take into account the replica symmetry breaking (RSB) effects. Recently it has been shown that the traditional replica-symmetric RG flows in the dimensions $D = 4 - ε$ are unstable with respect to the RSB potentials and a new spin-glass type critical phenomena has been discovered. In contrast, here it is demonstrated that in the considered two-dimensional systems the renormalization-group flows are stable with respect to the RSB modes. It is shown that the solution of the renormalization group equations with arbitrary starting RSB coupling matrix exhibits asymptotic approach to the traditional replica-symmetric ones. Thus, in the leading order the RSB degrees of freedom does not effect the critical phenomena in the two-dimensional weakly disordered Ising and Baxter models studied earlier.

Replica Symmetry Breaking and the Renormalization Group Theory of the Weakly Disordered Ferromagnet

We study the critical properties of the weakly disordered $p$-component ferromagnet in terms of the renormalization group (RG) theory generalized to take into account the replica symmetry breaking (RSB) effects coming from the multiple local minima solutions of the mean-field equations. It is shown that for $p < 4$ the traditional RG flows at dimensions $D=4-ε$, which are usually considered as describing the disorder-induced universal critical behavior, are unstable with respect to the RSB potentials as found in spin glasses. It is demonstrated that for a general type of the Parisi RSB structures there exists no stable fixed points, and the RG flows lead to the {\it strong coupling regime} at the finite scale $R_{*} \sim \exp(1/u)$, where $u$ is the small parameter describing the disorder. The physical concequences of the obtained RG solutions are discussed. In particular, we argue, that discovered RSB strong coupling phenomena indicate on the onset of a new spin glass type critical behaviour in the temperature interval $τ< τ_{*} \sim \exp(-1/u)$ near $T_{c}$. Possible relevance of the considered RSB effects for the Griffith phase is also discussed.
