Pressure-enhanced $f$-electron orbital weighting in UTe2 mapped by quantum interferometry

The phase landscape of UTe$_2$ features a remarkable diversity of superconducting phases under applied pressure and magnetic field. Recent quantum oscillation studies at ambient pressure have revealed the quasi-2D Fermi surface of this material. However, the pressure-dependence of the Fermi surface remains an open question. Here we track the evolution of the UTe$_2$ Fermi surface as a function of pressure up to 19.5 kbar by measuring quantum interference oscillations. We find that in sufficient magnetic field to suppress both superconductivity at low pressures and incommensurate antiferromagnetism at higher pressures, the quasi-2D Fermi surface found at ambient pressure smoothly connects to that at 19.5 kbar, with no signs of a reconstruction over this pressure interval. We observe a smooth increase in oscillatory frequency with increasing pressure, indicating that the warping of the cylindrical Fermi sheets continuously increases with pressure. By computing a tight-binding model, we show that this enhanced warping indicates increased $f$-orbital contribution at the Fermi level - up to and beyond the critical pressure at which superconductivity is truncated. These findings highlight the value of high-pressure quantum interference measurements as a new probe of the electronic structure in heavy fermion materials.

A quantum critical line bounds the high field metamagnetic transition surface in UTe$_2$

Quantum critical phenomena are widely studied across various materials families, from high temperature superconductors to magnetic insulators. They occur when a thermodynamic phase transition is suppressed to zero temperature as a function of some tuning parameter such as pressure or magnetic field. This generally yields a point of instability - a so-called quantum critical point - at which the phase transition is driven exclusively by quantum fluctuations. Here we show that the heavy fermion metamagnet UTe$_2$ possesses a quantum phase transition at extreme magnetic field strengths of over 70 T. Rather than terminating at one singular point, we find that the phase boundary is sensitive to magnetic field components in each of the three Cartesian axes of magnetic field space. This results in the three-dimensional transition surface being bounded by a continuous ring of quantum critical points, the locus of which forms an extended line of quantum criticality - a novel form of quantum critical phase boundary. Within this quantum critical line sits a magnetic field-induced superconducting state in a toroidal shape, which persists to fields over 70~T. We model our data by a phenomenological free energy expansion, and show how a three-dimensional quantum critical phase boundary - rather than a more conventional singular point of instability - anchors the remarkable high magnetic field phase landscape of UTe$_2$.

High-field magnetic properties of the alternating ferro-antiferromagnetic spin-chain compound Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$Br

We present comprehensive high magnetic field studies of the alternating weakly coupled ferro-antiferromagnetic (FM-AFM) spin-$1/2$ chain compound Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$Br, with the structure of the natural mineral botallackite. Our measurements reveal a broad magnetization plateau at about half of the saturation value, strongly suggesting that the FM chain sublattice becomes fully polarized, while the AFM chain sublattice remains barely magnetized, in magnetic fields at least up to $50$ T. We confirm a spin-reorientation transition for magnetic fields applied in the $ac^\ast$-plane, whose angular dependence is described in the framework of the mean-field theory. Employing high-field THz spectroscopy, we reveal a complex pattern of high-frequency spinon-magnon bound-state excitations. On the other hand, at lower frequencies we observe two modes of antiferromagnetic resonance, as a consequence of the long-range magnetic ordering. We demonstrate that applied magnetic field tends to suppress the long-range magnetic ordering; the temperature-field phase diagram of the phase transition is obtained for magnetic fields up to $14$ T for three principal directions ($a$, $b$, $c^\ast$).

Enhanced triplet superconductivity in next generation ultraclean UTe2

The unconventional superconductor UTe$_2$ exhibits numerous signatures of spin-triplet superconductivity -- a rare state of matter which could enable quantum computation protected against decoherence. UTe$_2$ possesses a complex phase landscape comprising two magnetic field-induced superconducting phases, a metamagnetic transition to a field-polarised state, along with pair- and charge-density wave orders. However, contradictory reports between studies performed on UTe$_2$ specimens of varying quality have severely impeded theoretical efforts to understand the microscopic origins of the exotic superconductivity. Here, we report a comprehensive suite of high magnetic field measurements on a new generation of pristine quality UTe$_2$ crystals. Our experiments reveal a significantly revised high magnetic field superconducting phase diagram in the ultraclean limit, showing a pronounced sensitivity of field-induced superconductivity to the presence of crystalline disorder. We employ a Ginzburg-Landau model that excellently captures this acute dependence on sample quality. Our results suggest that in close proximity to a field--induced metamagnetic transition the enhanced role of magnetic fluctuations -- that are strongly suppressed by disorder -- is likely responsible for tuning UTe$_2$ between two distinct spin-triplet superconducting phases.

Quantum interference between quasi-2D Fermi surface sheets in UTe2

UTe$_2$ is a spin-triplet superconductor candidate for which high quality samples with long mean free paths have recently become available, enabling quantum oscillation measurements to probe its Fermi surface and effective carrier masses. It has recently been reported that UTe$_2$ possesses a 3D Fermi surface component [Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 036501 (2023)]. The distinction between 2D and 3D Fermi surface sections in triplet superconductors can have important implications regarding the topological properties of the superconductivity. Here we report the observation of oscillatory components in the magnetoconductance of UTe$_2$ at high magnetic fields. We find that these oscillations are well described by quantum interference between quasiparticles traversing semiclassical trajectories spanning magnetic breakdown networks. Our observations are consistent with a quasi-2D model of this material's Fermi surface based on prior dHvA-effect measurements. Our results strongly indicate that UTe$_2$ -- which exhibits a multitude of complex physical phenomena -- possesses a remarkably simple Fermi surface consisting exclusively of two quasi-2D cylindrical sections.

Pressure-induced shift of effective Ce valence, Fermi energy and phase boundaries in CeOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$

CeOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$, a member of the skutterudite family, has an unusual semimetallic low-temperature $\cal{L}$-phase that inhabits a wedge-like area of the field $H$ - temperature $T$ phase diagram. We have conducted measurements of electrical transport and megahertz conductivity on CeOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ single crystals under pressures of up to 3 GPa and in high magnetic fields of up to 41 T to investigate the influence of pressure on the different $H$-$T$ phase boundaries. While the high-temperature valence transition between the metallic $\cal{H}$-phase and the $\cal{L}$-phase is shifted to higher $T$ by pressures of the order of 1 GPa, we observed only a marginal suppression of the $\cal{S}$-phase that is found below 1 K for pressures of up to 1.91 GPa. High-field quantum oscillations have been observed for pressures up to 3.0 GPa and the Fermi surface of the high-field side of the $\cal{H}$-phase is found to show a surprising decrease in size with increasing pressure, implying a change in electronic structure rather than a mere contraction of lattice parameters. We evaluate the field-dependence of the effective masses for different pressures and also reflect on the sample dependence of some of the properties of CeOs$_4$Sb$_{12}$ which appears to be limited to the low-field region.

Interplay of Magnetism and Transport in HoBi

We report the observation of an extreme magnetoresistance (XMR) in HoBi with a large magnetic moment from Ho f-electrons. Neutron scattering is used to determine the magnetic wave vectors across several metamagnetic (MM) transitions on the phase diagram of HoBi. Unlike other magnetic rare-earth monopnictides, the field dependence of resistivity in HoBi is non-monotonic and reveals clear signatures of every metamagnetic transition in the low-temperature and low-field regime, at T < 2 K and H < 2.3 T. The XMR appears at H > 2.3 T after all the metamagnetic transitions are complete and the system is spin-polarized by the external magnetic field. The existence of an onset field for XMR and the intimate connection between magnetism and transport in HoBi are unprecedented among the magnetic rare-earth monopnictides. Therefore, HoBi provides a unique opportunity to understand the electrical transport in magnetic XMR semimetals.

Quantum oscillations and a non-trivial Berry phase in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd

We report the measurements of de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) oscillations in the noncentrosymmetric superconductor BiPd. Several pieces of a complex multi-sheet Fermi surface are identified, including a small pocket (frequency 40 T) which is three dimensional and anisotropic. From the temperature dependence of the amplitude of the oscillations, the cyclotron effective mass is ($0.18$ $\pm$ 0.1) $m_e$. Further analysis showed a non-trivial $π$-Berry phase is associated with the 40 T pocket, which strongly supports the presence of topological states in bulk BiPd and may result in topological superconductivity due to the proximity coupling to other bands.

Complex superconductivity in the noncentrosymmetric compound Re$_{6}$Zr

We report the electronic structure, synthesis, and measurements of the magnetic, transport, and thermal properties of the polycrystalline noncentrosymmetric compound Re$_{6}$Zr. We observed a bulk superconducting transition at temperature $T_{c}$ $\sim$ 6.7 K, and measured the resistivity, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and the London penetration depth below the transition, as well as performed doping and pressure studies. From these measurements we extracted the critical field, and the superconducting parameters of Re$_{6}$Zr. Our measurements indicate a relatively weak to moderate contribution from a triplet component to the order parameter, and favor a full superconducting gap, although we cannot exclude the existence of point nodes based on our data.

Pressure Driven Fermi surface reconstruction of chromium

We have observed a massive reconstruction of the Fermi surface of single crystal chromium as a function of high pressure and high magnetic fields caused by the spin-flip transition, with multiple new orbits appearing above 0.93 GPa. Additionally, some orbits have field-induced effective masses of ~0.06-0.07 me, seen only at high magnetic fields. Based on the temperature insensitivity displayed by the oscillation amplitudes at these frequencies, we attribute the orbits to quantum interference rather than to Landau quantization.
