Spontaneous symmetry breaking in three-Higgs-doublet $S_3$-symmetric models

The talk summarises work done by the authors consisting of a detailed study of the possible vacua in models with three Higgs doublets with $S_3$ symmetry and without explicit CP violation. Different vacua require special regions of the parameter space which were analysed in our work. We establish the possibility of spontaneous CP violation in this framework and we also show which complex vacua conserve CP. In our work we discussed constraints from vacuum stability. The results presented here are relevant for model building.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking in the $S_3$-symmetric scalar sector

We present a detailed study of the vacua of the $S_3$-symmetric three-Higgs-doublet potential, specifying the region of parameters where these minimisation solutions occur. We work with a CP conserving scalar potential and analyse the possible real and complex vacua with emphasis on the cases in which the CP symmetry can be spontaneously broken. Results are presented both in the reducible-representation framework of Derman, and in the irreducible-representation framework. Mappings between these are given. Some of these implementations can in principle accommodate dark matter and for that purpose it is important to identify the residual symmetries of the potential after spontaneous symmetry breakdown. We are also concerned with constraints from vacuum stability.

CP Violation in the scalar sector

Models with an extended scalar sector may in principle provide new sources of CP violation originating in the scalar potential. One of the simplest ways to implement this idea is to have CP violation in a two-Higgs-doublet model. Here, it leads to CP violation in trilinear weak gauge boson couplings. We discuss how these couplings are becoming constrained in the alignment limit. In a model with three Higgs doublets, subject to an $S_3$ symmetry, several complex vacua are possible. Some of these, but not all, may lead to spontaneous CP violation.

Minimal anomaly-free chiral fermion sets and gauge coupling unification

We look for minimal chiral sets of fermions beyond the standard model that are anomaly free and, simultaneously, vectorlike particles with respect to colour SU(3) and electromagnetic U(1). We then study whether the addition of such particles to the standard model particle content allows for the unification of gauge couplings at a high energy scale, above $5.0 \times 10^{15}$ GeV so as to be safely consistent with proton decay bounds. The possibility to have unification at the string scale is also considered. Inspired in grand unified theories, we also search for minimal chiral fermion sets that belong to SU(5) multiplets. Restricting to representations up to dimension 50, we show that some of these sets can lead to gauge unification at the GUT and/or string scales.

The minimal adjoint-SU(5)xZ_4 GUT model

An extension of the adjoint SU(5) model with a flavour symmetry based on the Z_4 group is investigated. The Z_4 symmetry is introduced with the aim of leading the up- and down-quark mass matrices to the Nearest-Neighbour-Interaction form. As a consequence of the discrete symmetry embedded in the SU(5) gauge group, the charged lepton mass matrix also gets the same form. Within this model, light neutrinos get their masses through type-I, type-III and one-loop radiative seesaw mechanisms, implemented, respectively, via a singlet, a triplet and an octet from the adjoint fermionic 24 fields. It is demonstrated that the neutrino phenomenology forces the introduction of at least three 24 fermionic multiplets. The symmetry SU(5)xZ_4 allows only two viable zero textures for the effective neutrino mass matrix. It is showed that one texture is only compatible with normal hierarchy and the other with inverted hierarchy in the light neutrino mass spectrum. Finally, it is also demonstrated that Z_4 freezes out the possibility of proton decay through exchange of colour Higgs triplets at tree-level.

Nearest-Neighbour-Interactions from a minimal discrete flavour symmetry within SU(5) Grand Unification

A flavour symmetry based on Z_4 is analysed in the context of SU(5) Grand Unification with the standard fermionic content plus three right-handed neutrinos. The role of Z_4 is to forbid some Yukawa couplings of up- and down-quarks to Higgs scalars such that the quark mass matrices M_u, M_d have Nearest-Neighbour-Interaction (NNI) structure, once they are generated through the electroweak symmetry breaking. It turns out in this framework that Z_4 is indeed the minimal discrete symmetry and its implementation requires the introduction of at least two Higgs quintets, which leads to a two Higgs doublet model at low energy scale. Due to the SU(5) unification, it is shown that the charged lepton mass matrix develops also NNI form. However, the effective neutrino mass matrix exhibits a non parallel pattern, in the framework of the type-I seesaw mechanism. Analysing all possible zero textures allowed by gauge-horizontal symmetry SU(5) x Z_4, it is seen that only two patterns are in agreement with the leptonic experimental data and they could be further distinguished by the light neutrino mass spectrum hierarchy. It is also demonstrated that Z_4 freezes out the possibility of proton decay through exchange of colour Higgs triplets at tree-level.

Nearest-Neighbour Interaction from an Abelian Symmetry and Deviations from Hermiticity

We show that Nearest-Neighbour Interaction (NNI) textures for the quark mass matrices can be obtained through the introduction of an Abelian flavour symmetry. The minimal realisation requires a Z_4 symmetry in the context of a two Higgs doublet model. It is further shown that the NNI textures can be in agreement with all present experimental data on quark masses and mixings, provided one allows for deviations of Hermiticity in the quark mass matrices at the 20% level.

Anomaly-free constraints in neutrino seesaw models

The implementation of seesaw mechanisms to give mass to neutrinos in the presence of an anomaly-free U(1)_X gauge symmetry is discussed in the context of minimal extensions of the standard model. It is shown that type-I and type-III seesaw mechanisms cannot be simultaneously implemented with an anomaly-free local U(1)_X, unless the symmetry is a replica of the well-known hypercharge. For combined type-I/II or type-III/II seesaw models it is always possible to find nontrivial anomaly-free charge assignments, which are however tightly constrained, if the new neutral gauge boson is kinematically accessible at LHC. The discovery of the latter and the measurement of its decays into third-generation quarks, as well as its mixing with the standard Z boson, would allow one to discriminate among different seesaw realizations.

Reconstruction of Quark Mass Matrices with Weak Basis Texture Zeroes from Experimental Input

All quark mass matrices with texture zeroes obtained through weak basis transformations are confronted with the experimental data. The reconstruction of the quark mass matrices M_u and M_d at the electroweak scale is performed in a weak basis where the matrices are Hermitian and have a maximum of three vanishing elements. The same procedure is also accomplished for the Yukawa coupling matrices at the grand unification scale in the context of the Standard Model and its minimal supersymmetric extension as well as of the two Higgs doublet model. The analysis of all viable power structures on the quark Yukawa coupling matrices that could naturally appear from a Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism is also presented.

Weak Basis Transformations and Texture Zeros in the Leptonic Sector

We investigate the physical meaning of some of the texture zeros which appear in most of the Ansatze on leptonic masses and their mixing. It is shown that starting from arbitrary lepton mass matrices and making suitable weak basis transformations one can obtain some of these sets of zeros, which therefore have no physical content. We then analyse four-zero texture Ansatze where the charged lepton and neutrino mass matrices have the same structure. The four texture zeros cannot be obtained simultaneously through weak basis transformations, so these Ansatze do have physical content. We show that they can be separated into four classes and study the physical implications of each class.

Spontaneous CP Violation in a SUSY Model with a complex CKM

It is pointed out that the recent measurement of the angle $γ$ of the unitarity triangle, providing irrefutable evidence for a complex Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix, presents a great challenge for supersymmetric models with spontaneous CP violation. We construct a new minimal extension of the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), with spontaneous CP breaking, which leads to a complex CKM matrix, thus conforming to present experimental data. This is achieved through the introduction of two singlet chiral superfields and a vector-like quark chiral superfield which mixes with the standard quarks. A $Z_3$ symmetry is introduced in order to have a potential solution to the strong CP problem.

Minimal string-scale unification of gauge couplings

We look for the minimal particle content which is necessary to add to the standard model in order to have a complete unification of gauge couplings and gravity at the weakly coupled heterotic string scale. Using the current precision electroweak data, we find that the presence of a vector-like fermion at an intermediate scale and a non-standard hypercharge normalization are in general sufficient to achieve this goal at two-loop level. If one requires the extra matter scale to be below the TeV scale, then it is found that the addition of three vector-like fermion doublets with a mass around 700 GeV yields a perfect string-scale unification, provided that the affine levels are kY=13/3, k2=1 and k3=2, as in the SU(5) X SU(5) string-GUT. Furthermore, if supersymmetry is broken at the unification scale, the Higgs mass is predicted in the range 125 GeV - 170 GeV, depending on the precise values of the top quark mass and tan(beta) parameter.

Flavour structure and proton decay in 6D orbifold GUTs

We study proton decay in a supersymmetric {\sf SO(10)} gauge theory in six dimensions compactified on an orbifold. The dimension-5 proton decay operators are forbidden by R-symmetry, whereas the dimension-6 operators are enhanced due to the presence of KK towers. Three sequential quark-lepton families are localised at the three orbifold fixed points, where {\sf SO(10)} is broken to its three GUT subgroups. The physical quarks and leptons are mixtures of these brane states and additional bulk zero modes. This leads to a characteristic pattern of branching ratios in proton decay, in particular the suppression of the $p\to \m^+K^0$ mode.

Proton Decay in a Consistent Supersymmetric SU(5) GUT Model

It is widely believed that minimal supersymmetric SU(5) GUTs have been excluded by the SuperKamiokande bound for the proton decay rate. In the minimal model, however, the theoretical prediction assumes unification of Yukawa couplings, Y_d=Y_e, which is known to be badly violated. We analyze the implications of this fact for the proton decay rate. In a consistent SU(5) model with higher dimensional operators, where SU(5) relations among Yukawa couplings hold, the proton decay rate can be several orders of magnitude smaller than the present experimental bound.

Yukawa Structure with Maximal Predictability

A simple Ansatz for the quark mass matrices is considered, based on the assumption of a power structure for the matrix elements and the requirement of maximal predictability. A good fit to the present experimental data is obtained and the position of the vertex of the unitarity triangle, i.e. (\barρ,\barη), is predicted.

Texture Zeros and Weak Basis Transformations

We investigate the physical meaning of some of the "texture zeros" which appear in most of the Ansatze on quark masses and mixings. It is shown that starting from arbitrary quark mass matrices and making a suitable weak basis transformation one can obtain some of these sets of zeros which therefore have no physical content. We then analyse the physical implications of a four-texture zero Ansatz which is in agreement with all present experimental data.

Electroweak Baryogenesis in the Presence of an Isosinglet Quark

We consider the possibility of electroweak baryogenesis in a simple extension of the standard model with an extra singlet complex scalar and a vector-like down quark. We show that in the present model the first-order electroweak phase transition can be strong enough to avoid the baryon asymmetry washout by sphalerons and that the CP-violating effects can be sufficient to explain the observed baryon-to-entropy ratio nB/s ~ 10^(-10). Other appealing features of the model include the generation of a CKM phase from spontaneous CP breaking at a high energy scale and a possible solution of the strong CP problem through the natural suppression of the parameter theta.

A New Approach to the Yukawa Puzzle

We do a systematic analysis of the question of calculability of CKM matrix elements in terms of quark mass ratios, within the framework of the hypothesis of universality of strength for Yukawa couplings (USY), where all Yukawa couplings have equal moduli, and the flavor dependence is only in their phases. We use the fact that the limit $m_u=m_d=0$ is specially simple in USY, to construct the various ansätze. It is shown that the experimentally observed CKM matrix can be obtained within USY ansätze corresponding to simple relations among phases of Yukawa couplings. Within USY, one finds a natural explanation why Cabibbo mixing is significantly larger than the other CKM mixings. In the most successful of the USY ansätze, one obtains in leading order: $|V_{us}|=\sqrt{m_d/{m_s}}$ ; $ |V_{cb}|=\sqrt{2}(m_s/m_b)$ $ |V_{ub}|= (1/\sqrt{2})\sqrt{m_dm_s/m_b^2}$ ; $|V_{td}|= 3|V_{ub}|$. We study the behavior of this USY ansatz under the renormalization group.
