String tension in gonihedric 3D Ising models

For the 3D gonihedric Ising models defined by Savvidy and Wegner the bare string tension is zero and the energy of a spin interface depends only on the number of bends and self-intersections, in antithesis to the standard nearest-neighbour 3D Ising action. When the parameter kappa weighting the self-intersections is small the model has a first order transition and when it is larger the transition is continuous. In this paper we investigate the scaling of the renormalized string tension, which is entirely generated by fluctuations, using Monte Carlo simulations This allows us to obtain an estimate for the critical exponents alpha and nu using both finite-size-scaling and data collapse for the scaling function.

The Effective Lagrangian of the Two Higgs Doublet Model

We consider the two Higgs doublet model extension of the Standard Model in the limit where all physical scalar particles are very heavy; too heavy, in fact, to be experimentally produced in forthcoming experiments. The symmetry breaking sector can thus be described by an effective chiral Lagrangian. We obtain the values of the coefficients of the O(p^4) operators relevant to the oblique corrections and investigate to what extent some non-decoupling effects may remain at low energies.

Evidence for a first order transition in a plaquette 3d Ising-like action

We investigate a 3d Ising action which corresponds to a a class of models defined by Savvidy and Wegner, originally intended as discrete versions of string theories on cubic lattices. These models have vanishing bare surface tension and the couplings are tuned in such a way that the action depends only on the angles of the discrete surface, i.e. on the way the surface is embedded in ${\bf Z}^3$. Hence the name gonihedric by which they are known. We show that the model displays a rather clear first order phase transition in the limit where self-avoidance is neglected and the action becomes a plaquette one. This transition persists for small values of the self avoidance coupling, but it turns to second order when this latter parameter is further increased. These results exclude the use of this type of action as models of gonihedric random surfaces, at least in the limit where self avoidance is neglected.

Ambiguities in QED: Renormalons versus Triviality

We point out that, contrary to what is believed to hold for QCD, renormalons are genuine in QED; i.e. the ambiguities which come with them do not require cancellation by hypothetical non-perturbative contributions. They are just the ambiguities characteristic of any trivial ---and thus effective--- theory. If QED remained an isolated theory up to an energy close to its triviality scale, these ambiguities would surely hint at new physics. This not being so, the renormalon ambiguities in QED lead to no new physics, not even to non-perturbative contributions within QED itself.

M.C.R.G. Study of Fixed-connectivity Surfaces

We apply Monte Carlo Renormalization group to the crumpling transition in random surface models of fixed connectivity. This transition is notoriously difficult to treat numerically. We employ here a Fourier accelerated Langevin algorithm in conjunction with a novel blocking procedure in momentum space which has proven extremely successful in $λϕ^4$. We perform two successive renormalizations in lattices with up to $64^2$ sites. We obtain a result for the critical exponent $ν$ in general agreement with previous estimates and similar error bars, but with much less computational effort. We also measure with great accuracy $η$. As a by-product we are able to determine the fractal dimension $d_H$ of random surfaces at the crumpling transition.

Determination of the Crumpling Fractal Dimension Via k-Space MCRG

Motivated by the successful application of MCRG in momentum space to $λϕ^4_3$ we determine the critical exponents at the crumpling transition in fixed triangulated surfaces. The results are still tentative, but suggest that $-1.0\ge η\ge -1.3$, pointing at a value for the fractal Hausdorff dimension at the crumpling transistion fixed point somewhere between 3 and 4.

RENORMALIZATION and the EQUIVALENCE THEOREM: ON-SHELL SCHEME

We perform an exhaustive analysis of the Equivalence Theorem both in the minimal Standard Model and in an Effective Electroweak Chiral Lagrangian up to ${\cal O}(p^4)$. We have considered the leading corrections to the usual prescription consisting in just replacing longitudinally polarized $W$ or $Z$ by the corresponding Goldstone bosons. The corrections appear through an overall constant multiplying the Goldstone boson amplitude as well as through additional diagrams. By including them we can extend the domain of applicability of the Equivalence Theorem, making it suitable for precision tests of the symmetry breaking sector of the Standard Model. The on-shell scheme has been used throughout. When considering the Equivalence Theorem in an Effective Chiral lagrangian we analyze its domain of applicability, as well as several side issues concerning gauge fixing, Ward identities, on-shell scheme and matching conditions in the effective theory. We have analyzed in detail the processes $W^+ W^- \to W^+W^-$ and $W^+W^+\to W^+W^+$ to illustrate the points made.

Perturbative QCD

This is the written version of a set of lectures on perturbative QCD that were delivered to a mixed audience of young theorists and experimentalists in the course of the XXII International Meeting on Fundamental Physics. These notes are virtually a verbatim transcription of the lectures. The selection of topics is somewhat arbitrary, but two basic points are emphasized: the rationale behind QCD and how ongoing experiments, such as those taking place in LEP and HERA, contribute to our understanding of strong interactions. The lectures are thus roughly divided into three parts: foundations of QCD, determination of $α_s$ and jet physics, and deep inelastic experiments.

Some Remarks on the Matching Conditions

We analyze the matching conditions to determine the values that the ${\cal O}(p^4)$ coefficients of an Effective Chiral Lagrangian take in the Standard Model in the limit of a large Higgs mass, pointing out a number of subtleties that appear to have gone unnoticed previously. We apply the resulting Effective Chiral Lagrangian, including the leading two loop effects, to analyze the most recent electroweak data assuming $m_{top}=174\pm 10$ GeV.

Regularization Methods in Chiral Perturbation Theory

Chiral lagrangians describing the interactions of Goldstone bosons in a theory possessing spontaneous symmetry breaking are effective, non-renormalizable field theories in four dimensions. Yet, in a momentum expansion one is able to extract definite, testable predictions from perturbation theory. These techniques have yielded in recent years a wealth of information on many problems where the physics of Goldstone bosons plays a crucial role, but theoretical issues concerning chiral perturbation theory remain, to this date, poorly treated in the literature. We present here a rather comprehensive analysis of the regularization and renormalization ambiguities appearing in chiral perturbation theory at the one loop level. We discuss first on the relevance of dealing with tadpoles properly. We demonstrate that Ward identities severely constrain the choice of regulators to the point of enforcing unique, unambiguous results in chiral perturbation theory at the one-loop level for any observable which is renormalization-group invariant. We comment on the physical implications of these results and on several possible regulating methods that may be of use for some applications.

Steiner Variations on Random Surfaces

Ambartzumian et.al. suggested that the modified Steiner action functional had desirable properties for a random surface action. However, Durhuus and Jonsson pointed out that such an action led to an ill-defined grand-canonical partition function and suggested that the addition of an area term might improve matters. In this paper we investigate this and other related actions numerically for dynamically triangulated random surfaces and compare the results with the gaussian plus extrinsic curvature actions that have been used previously.

The Crumpling Transition Revisited

The ``crumpling" transition, between rigid and crumpled surfaces, has been object of much discussion over the past years. The common lore is that such transition should be of second order. However, some lattice versions of the rigidity term on fixed connectivity surfaces seem to suggest that the transition is of higher order instead. While some models exhibit what appear to be lattice artifacts, others are really indistiguishable from models where second order transitions have been reported and yet appear to have third order transitions.

Spectrum of Relativistic Fermions in a 2d Doped Lattice

Motivated by some previous work on fermions on random lattices and by suggestions that impurities could trigger parity breaking in 2d crystals, we have analyzed the spectrum of the Dirac equation on a two dimensional square lattice where sites have been removed randomly --- a doped lattice. We have found that the system is well described by a sine-Gordon action. The solitons of this model are the lattice fermions, which pick a quartic interaction due to the doping and become Thirring fermions. They also get an effective mass different from the lagrangian mass. The system seems to exhibit spontaneous symmetry breaking, exactly as it happens for a randomly triangulated lattice. The associated ``Goldstone boson" is the sine-Gordon scalar. We argue, however, that the peculiar behaviour of the chiral condensate is due to finite size effects.
