Entanglement generation in relativistic cavity motion

We analyse particle creation and mode mixing for a quantum field in an accelerated cavity, assuming small accelerations but allowing arbitrary velocities, travel times and travel distances, and in particular including the regime of relativistic velocities. As an application, we identify a desktop experimental scenario where the mode mixing resonance frequency in linear sinusoidal motion or in uniform circular motion is significantly below the particle creation resonance frequencies of the Dynamical Casimir Effect, and arguably at the threshold of current technology. The mode mixing acts as a beamsplitter quantum gate, experimentally detectable not only via fluxes or particle numbers but also via entanglement generation.

Soliton-induced relativistic-scattering and amplification

Solitons are of fundamental importance in photonics due to applications in optical data transmission and also as a tool for investigating novel phenomena ranging from light generation at new frequencies and wave-trapping to rogue waves. Solitons are also relativistic scatterers: they generate refractive-index perturbations moving at the speed of light. Here we found that such perturbations scatter light in an unusual way: they amplify light by the mixing of positive and negative frequencies, as we describe using a first Born approximation and numerical simulations. The simplest scenario in which these effects may be observed is within the initial stages of optical soliton propagation: a steep shock front develops that may efficiently scatter a second, weaker probe pulse into relatively intense positive and negative frequency modes with amplification at the expense of the soliton. Our results show a novel all-optical amplification scheme that relies on relativistic scattering.

Negative frequency resonant radiation

Optical solitons or soliton-like states shed light to blue-shifted frequencies through a resonant emission process. We predict a mechanism by which a second propagating mode is generated. This mode, called negative resonant radiation originates from the coupling of the soliton mode to the negative frequency branch of the dispersion relation. Measurements in both bulk media and photonic crystal fibres confirm our predictions.

Dielectric black holes induced by a refractive index perturbation and the Hawking effect

We consider a 4D model for photon production induced by a %superluminal refractive index perturbation in a dielectric medium. We show that, in this model, we can infer the presence of a Hawking type effect. This prediction shows up both in the analogue Hawking framework, which is implemented in the pulse frame and relies on the peculiar properties of the effective geometry in which quantum fields propagate, as well as in the laboratory frame, through standard quantum field theory calculations. Effects of optical dispersion are also taken into account, and are shown to provide a limited energy bandwidth for the emission of Hawking radiation.

Spacetime geometries and light trapping in travelling refractive index perturbations

In the framework of transformation optics, we show that the propagation of a locally superluminal refractive index perturbation (RIP) in a Kerr medium can be described, in the eikonal approximation, by means of a stationary metric, which we prove to be of Gordon type. Under suitable hypotheses on the RIP, we obtain a stationary but not static metric, which is characterized by an ergosphere and by a peculiar behaviour of the geodesics, which are studied numerically, also accounting for material dispersion. Finally, the equation to be satisfied by an event horizon is also displayed and briefly discussed.

Hawking radiation from ultrashort laser pulse filaments

Event horizons of astrophysical black holes and gravitational analogues have been predicted to excite the quantum vacuum and give rise to the emission of quanta, known as Hawking radiation. We experimentally create such a gravitational analogue using ultrashort laser pulse filaments and our measurements demonstrate a spontaneous emission of photons that confirms theoretical predictions.

Quantum radiation from superluminal refractive index perturbations

We analyze in detail photon production induced by a superluminal refractive index perturbation in realistic experimental operating conditions. The interaction between the refractive index perturbation and the quantum vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field leads to the production of photon pairs.

Analogue Gravity and ultrashort laser pulse filamentation

Ultrashort laser pulse filaments in dispersive nonlinear Kerr media induce a moving refractive index perturbation which modifies the space-time geometry as seen by co-propagating light rays. We study the analogue geometry induced by the filament and show that one of the most evident features of filamentation, namely conical emission, may be precisely reconstructed from the geodesics. We highlight the existence of favorable conditions for the study of analogue black hole kinematics and Hawking type radiation.
