The Tachyon Propagator

Following the canonical quantization procedure for a tachyon field, the usual Hamiltonian and the creation and annihilation operators are obtained. The observation that the mass hyperboloid $p^2-m^2=0$ is one-sheeted, as opposed to the case of bradyons where $p^2+m^2=0$ is two-sheeted, leads to the construction of a base which is unbounded for negative as well as for positive energies. There is a zero-energy eigenfunction from which all other states can be constructed by repeated application of decreasing or increasing operators, within this Fock space the vacuum expectation value of the chronological product of field operators is shown to coincide with Cauchy's principal-value Green's function.

The Tachyon Field below the mass barrier

We consider a tachyon field whose Fourier components correspond to spatial momenta with modulus smaller than the mass parameter. The plane wave solutions have them a time evolution which is a real exponential. The field is quantized and the solution of the eigenvalue problem for the Hamiltonian leads to the evaluation of the vacuum expectation value of products of field operators. The propagator turns out to be half-advanced and half-retarded. This completes the proof [4] that the total propagator is the Wheeler Green function [4,7].

A gauge invariant and string independent fermion correlator in the Schwinger model

We introduce a gauge invariant and string independent two-point fermion correlator which is analyzed in the context of the Schwinger model (QED_2). We also derive an effective infrared worldline action for this correlator, thus enabling the computation of its infrared behavior. Finally, we briefly discuss possible perspectives for the string independent correlator in the QED_3 effective models for the normal state of HTc superconductors.

Microscopic Evolution of a Weakly Interacting Homogeneous Bose Gas

We provide a detailed description of the nonequilibrium time evolution of an interacting homogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate. We use a nonperturbative in-medium quantum field theory approach as a microscopic model for the Bose gas. The real-time dynamics of the condensate is encoded in a set of self-consistent equations which corresponds to an infinite sum of ladder Feynman diagrams. The crucial role played by the interaction between fluctuations for the instability generation is thoroughly described.

The point-splitting regularization of (2+1)d parity breaking models

The coefficient of the Chern-Simons term in the effective action for massive Dirac fermions in three dimensions is computed by using the point-splitting regularization method. We show that in this framework no ambiguities arise. This is related to the fact that the point-splitting regularization does not introduce additional parity breaking effects, implementing one possible physical criterion in order to uniquely characterize the system.

Functional Bosonization of Non-Relativistic Fermions in $(2+1)$ Dimensions

We analyze the universality of the bosonization rules in non-relativistic fermionic systems in $(2+1)d$. We show that, in the case of linear fermionic dispersion relations, a general fermionic theory can be mapped into a gauge theory in such a way that the fermionic density maps into a magnetic flux and the fermionic current maps into a transverse electric field. These are universal rules in the sense that they remain valid whatever the interaction considered. We also show that these rules are universal in the case of non-linear dispersion relations provided we consider only density-density interactions. We apply the functional bosonization formalism to a non-relativistic and non-local massive Thirring-like model and evaluate the spectrum of collective excitations in several limits. In the large mass limit, we are able to exactly calculate this spectrum for arbitrary density-density and current-current interactions. We also analyze the massless case and show that it has no collective excitations for any density-density potential in the Gaussian approximation. Moreover, the presence of current interactions may induce a gapless mode with a linear dispersion relation.

Dynamical Viscosity of Nucleating Bubbles

We study the viscosity corrections to the growth rate of nucleating bubbles in a first order phase transition in scalar field theory. We obtain the non-equilibrium equation of motion of the coordinate that describes small departures from the critical bubble and extract the growth rate consistently in weak coupling and in the thin wall limit. Viscosity effects arise from the interaction of this coordinate with the stable quantum and thermal fluctuations around a critical bubble. In the case of 1+1 dimensions we provide an estimate for the growth rate that depends on the details of the free energy functional. In 3+1 dimensions we recognize robust features that are a direct consequence of the thin wall approximation and give the leading viscosity corrections. These are long-wavelength hydrodynamic fluctuations that describe surface waves, quasi-Goldstone modes which are related to ripples on interfaces in phase ordered Ising-like systems. We discuss the applicability of our results to describe the growth rate of hadron bubbles in a quark-hadron first order transition.

Topological and Universal Aspects of Bosonized Interacting Fermionic Systems in (2+1)d

General results on the structure of the bosonization of fermionic systems in $(2+1)$d are obtained. In particular, the universal character of the bosonized topological current is established and applied to generic fermionic current interactions. The final form of the bosonized action is shown to be given by the sum of two terms. The first one corresponds to the bosonization of the free fermionic action and turns out to be cast in the form of a pure Chern-Simons term, up to a suitable nonlinear field redefinition. We show that the second term, following from the bosonization of the interactions, can be obtained by simply replacing the fermionic current by the corresponding bosonized expression.

On the Electromagnetic Response of Charged Bosons Coupled to a Chern-Simons Gauge Field: A Path Integral Approach

We analyze the electromagnetic response of a system of charged bosons coupled to a Chern-Simons gauge field. Path integral techniques are used to obtain an effective action for the particle density of the system dressed with quantum fluctuations of the CS gauge field. From the action thus obtained we compute the U(1) current of the theory for an arbitrary electromagnetic external field. For the particular case of a homogeneous external magnetic field, we show that the quantization of the transverse conductivity is exact, even in the presence of an arbitrary impurity distribution. The relevance of edge states in this context is analyzed. The propagator of density fluctuations is computed, and an effective action for the matter density in the presence of a vortex excitation is suggested.

Vacuum properties of a Non-Local Thirring-Like Model

We use path-integral methods to analyze the vacuum properties of a recently proposed extension of the Thirring model in which the interaction between fermionic currents is non-local. We calculate the exact ground state wave functional of the model for any bilocal potential, and also study its long-distance behavior. We show that the ground state wave functional has a general factored Jastrow form. We also find that it posess an interesting symmetry involving the interchange of density-density and current-current interactions.

Asymptotic States in Non-Local Field Theories

Asymptotic states in field theories containing non-local kinetic terms are analyzed using the canonical method, naturally defined in Minkowski space. We apply our results to study the asymptotic states of a non-local Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory coming from bosonization in 2+1 dimensions. We show that in this case the only asymptotic state of the theory, in the trivial (non-topological) sector, is the vacuum.

The Role of Fermions in Bubble Nucleation

We present a study of the role of fermions in the decay of metastable states of a scalar field via bubble nucleation. We analyze both one and three-dimensional systems by using a gradient expansion for the calculation of the fermionic determinant. The results of the one-dimensional case are compared to the exact results of previous work.

Non-Local Pseudo-Differential Operators

We define, in a consistent way, non-local pseudo-differential operators acting on a space of analytic functionals. These operators include the fractional derivative case. In this context we show how to solve homogeneous and inhomogeneous equations associated with these operators. We also extend the formalism to d-dimensional space-time solving, in particular, the fractional Wave and Klein-Gordon equations.

On the Chern-Simons Gauge Field

We show the relationship between a fluid of particles having charge and magnetic moment in $2+1$ dimensional electromagnetism and the Chern-Simons statistical field. The matter current which is minimally coupled to the electromagnetic field has two parts: the global electromagnetic current, and the corresponding topological current. The topological current is associated to the induced electromagnetic current, via a simple constitutive relation between charges and magnetic moments. We also study the edge states, when the region that the currents occupy is bounded.

Canonical quantization of non-local field equations

We consistently quantize a class of relativistic non-local field equations characterized by a non-local kinetic term in the lagrangian. We solve the classical non-local equations of motion for a scalar field and evaluate the on-shell hamiltonian. The quantization is realized by imposing Heisenberg's equation which leads to the commutator algebra obeyed by the Fourier components of the field. We show that the field operator carries, in general, a reducible representation of the Poincare group. We also consider the Gupta-Bleuler quantization of a non-local gauge field and analyze the propagators and the physical states of the theory.

Quantum Field Theory Description of Tunneling in the Integer Quantum Hall Effect

We study the tunneling between two quantum Hall systems, along a quasi one-dimensional interface. A detailed analysis relates microscopic parameters, characterizing the potential barrier, with the effective field theory model for the tunneling. It is shown that the phenomenon of fermion number fractionalization is expected to occur, either localized in conveniently modulated barriers or in the form of free excitations, once lattice effects are taken into account. This opens the experimental possibility of an observation of fractional charges with internal structure, close to the magnetic length scale. The coupling of the system to external gauge fields is performed, leading us to the exact quantization of the Hall conductivity at the interface. The field theory approach is well supported by a numerical diagonalization of the microscopic Hamiltonian.
