Renormalization Group Determination of the Five-Loop Effective Potential for Massless Scalar Field Theory

The five-loop effective potential and the associated summation of subleading logarithms for O(4) globally-symmetric massless $λϕ^4$ field theory in the Coleman-Weinberg renormalization scheme $\frac{d^4V}{dϕ^4}|_{ϕ= μ} = λ$ (where $μ$ is the renormalization scale) is calculated via renormalization-group methods. An important aspect of this analysis is conversion of the known five-loop renormalization-group functions in the minimal-subtraction (MS) scheme to the Coleman-Weinberg scheme.

A Canonical Analysis of the First Order Einstein-Hilbert Action

The Dirac constraint formalism is applied to the d(d>2) dimensional Einstein-Hilbert action when written in first order form, using the metric density and affine connection as independent fields. Field equations not involving time derivatives are not used to eliminate fields. Primary, secondary and tertiary constraints arise, leaving d(d-3) degrees of freedom in phase space. The Poisson Bracket algebra of these constraints is given.

The Derivative Expansion of the Effective Action and the Renormalization Group Equation

The perturbative evaluation of the effective action can be expanded in powers of derivatives of the external field. We apply the renormalization group equation to the term in the effective action that is second order in the derivatives of the external field and all orders in a constant external field, considering both massless scalar $ϕ_4^4$ model and massless scalar electrodynamics. A so-called ``on shell'' renormalization scheme permits one to express this ``kinetic term'' for the scalar field entirely in terms of the renormalization group functions appropriate for this scheme. These renormalization group functions can be related to those associated with minimal subtraction.

Radiative Properties of the Stueckelberg Mechanism

We examine the mechanism for generating a mass for a U(1) vector field introduced by Stueckelberg. First, it is shown that renormalization of the vector mass is identical to the renormalization of the vector field on account of gauge invariance. We then consider how the vector mass affects the effective potential in scalar quantum electrodynamics at one-loop order. The possibility of extending this mechanism to couple, in a gauge invariant way, a charged vector field to the photon is discussed.

The Effective Potential in the Massive $ϕ_4^4$ Model

By applying the renormalization group equation, it has been shown that the effective potential $V$ in the massless $ϕ_4^4$ model and in massless scalar quantum electrodynamics is independent of the scalar field. This analysis is extended here to the massive $ϕ_4^4$ model, showing that the effective potential is independent of $ϕ$ here as well.

Canonical Formulation of A Bosonic Matter Field in 1+1 Dimensional Curved Space

We study a Bosonic scalar in 1+1 dimensional curved space that is coupled to a dynamical metric field. This metric, along with the affine connection, also appears in the Einstein-Hilbert action when written in first order form. After illustrating the Dirac constraint analysis in Yang-Mills theory, we apply this formulation to the Einstein-Hilbert action and the action of the Bosonic scalar field, first separately and then together. Only in the latter case does a dynamical degree of freedom emerge.

A Canonical Analysis of the Einstein-Hilbert Action in First Order Form

Using the Dirac constraint formalism, we examine the canonical structure of the Einstein-Hilbert action $S_d = \frac{1}{16πG} \int d^dx \sqrt{-g} R$, treating the metric $g_{αβ}$ and the symmetric affine connection $Γ_{μν}^λ$ as independent variables. For $d > 2$ tertiary constraints naturally arise; if these are all first class, there are $d(d-3)$ independent variables in phase space, the same number that a symmetric tensor gauge field $ϕ_{μν}$ possesses. If $d = 2$, the Hamiltonian becomes a linear combination of first class constraints obeying an SO(2,1) algebra. These constraints ensure that there are no independent degrees of freedom. The transformation associated with the first class constraints is not a diffeomorphism when $d = 2$; it is characterized by a symmetric matrix $ξ_{μν}$. We also show that the canonical analysis is different if $h^{αβ} = \sqrt{-g} g^{αβ}$ is used in place of $g^{αβ}$ as a dynamical variable when $d = 2$, as in $d$ dimensions, $\det h^{αβ} = - (\sqrt{-g})^{d-2}$. A comparison with the formalism used in the ADM analysis of the Einstein-Hilbert action in first order form is made by applying this approach in the two dimensional case with $h^{αβ}$ and $Γ_{μν}^λ$ taken to be independent variables.

On the Standard Approach to Renormalization Group Improvement

Two approaches to renormalization-group improvement are examined: the substitution of the solutions of running couplings, masses and fields into perturbatively computed quantities is compared with the systematic sum of all the leading log (LL), next-to-leading log (NLL) etc. contributions to radiatively corrected processes, with n-loop expressions for the running quantities being responsible for summing N^{n}LL contributions. A detailed comparison of these procedures is made in the context of the effective potential V in the 4-dimensional O(4) massless $λϕ^{4}$ model, showing the distinction between these procedures at two-loop order when considering the NLL contributions to the effective potential V.

Stability of Subsequent-to-Leading-Logarithm Corrections to the Effective Potential for Radiative Electroweak Symmetry Breaking

We demonstrate the stability under subsequent-to-leading logarithm corrections of the quartic scalar-field coupling constant $λ$ and the running Higgs boson mass obtained from the (initially massless) effective potential for radiatively broken electroweak symmetry in the single-Higgs-Doublet Standard Model. Such subsequent-to-leading logarithm contributions are systematically extracted from the renormalization group equation considered beyond one-loop order. We show $λ$ to be the dominant coupling constant of the effective potential for the radiatively broken case of electroweak symmetry. We demonstrate the stability of $λ$ and the running Higgs boson mass through five orders of successively subleading logarithmic corrections to the scalar-field-theory projection of the effective potential for which all coupling constants except the dominant coupling constant $λ$ are disregarded. We present a full next-to-leading logarithm potential in the three dominant Standard Model coupling constants ($t$-quark-Yukawa, $α_s$, and $λ$) from these coupling constants' contribution to two loop $β$- and $γ$-functions. Finally, we demonstrate the manifest order-by-order stability of the physical Higgs boson mass in the 220-231 GeV range. In particular, we obtain a 231 GeV physical Higgs boson mass inclusive of the $t$-quark-Yukawa and $α_s$ coupling constants to next-to-leading logarithm order, and inclusive of the smaller $SU(2)\times U(1)$ gauge coupling constants to leading logarithm order.

Derivative Expansion of the Effective Action for Massless Scalar Electrodynamics in Arbitrary Gauge

It is shown how operator regularization can be used to obtain an expansion of the effective action in powers of derivatives of the background field. This is applied to massless scalar electrodynamics to find the one-loop corrections to the kinetic terms associated with both the scalar and vector fields in arbitrary gauge. This allows us to examine the radiatively induced masses arising in this model.

Quantization of the First-Order Two-Dimensional Einstein-Hilbert Action

A canonical analysis of the first-order two-dimensional Einstein-Hilbert action has shown it to have no physical degrees of freedom and to possess an unusual gauge symmetry with a symmetric field $ξ_{μν}$ acting as a gauge function. Some consequences of this symmetry are explored. The action is quantized and it is shown that all loop diagrams beyond one-loop order vanish. Furthermore, explicit calculation of the one-loop two-point function shows that it too vanishes, with the contribution of the ghost loop cancelling that of the ``graviton'' loop.

The Renormalization Group with Exact beta-Functions

The perturbative $β$-function is known exactly in a number of supersymmetric theories and in the 't Hooft renormalization scheme in the $ϕ_4^4$ model. It is shown how this allows one to compute the effective action exactly for certain background field configurations and to relate bare and renormalized couplings. The relationship between the MS and SUSY subtraction schemes in $N = 1$ super Yang-Mills theory is discussed.

Higher Order Stability of a Radiatively Induced 220 GeV Higgs Mass

The effective potential for radiatively broken electroweak symmetry in the single Higgs doublet Standard Model is explored to four sequentially subleading logarithm-summation levels (5-loops) in the dominant Higgs self-interaction couplant $λ$. We augment these results with all contributing leading logarithms in the remaining large but sub-dominant Standard Model couplants (t-quark, QCD and $SU(2)\otimes U(1)$ gauge couplants) as well as next to leading logarithm contributions from the largest of these, the t-quark and QCD couplants. Order-by-order stability is demonstrated for earlier leading logarithm predictions of an order 220 GeV Higgs boson mass in conjunction with fivefold enhancement of the value for $λ$ over that anticipated from conventional spontaneous symmetry breaking.

Radiative Corrections in a Vector-Tensor Model

In a recently proposed model in which a vector non-Abelian gauge field interacts with an antisymmetric tensor field, it has been shown that the tensor field possesses no physical degrees of freedom. This formal demonstration is tested by computing the one-loop contributions of the tensor field to the self-energy of the vector field. It is shown that despite the large number of Feynman diagrams in which the tensor field contributes, the sum of these diagrams vanishes, confirming that it is not physical. Furthermore, if the tensor field were to couple with a spinor field, it is shown at one-loop order that the spinor self-energy is not renormalizable, and hence this coupling must be excluded. In principle though, this tensor field does couple to the gravitational field.

Radiative Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Beyond Leading Logarithms

The top-quark Yukawa coupling is too large to permit radiative electroweak symmetry breaking to occur for small values of y, the Higgs self-coupling, to leading-logarithm order. However, a large y solution leading to a viable Higgs mass of approximately 220 GeV does exist, and differs from conventional symmetry breaking by an approximately five-fold enhancement of the Higgs self-coupling. This scenario for radiative symmetry breaking is reviewed, and the order-by-order perturbative stability of this scenario is studied within the scalar field theory projection of the standard model in which the Higgs self-coupling y represents the dominant standard-model coupling.

The renormalization group improved effective potential in massless models

The effective potential $V$ is considered in massless $λϕ^4_4$ theory. The expansion of $V$ in powers of the coupling $λ$ and of the logarithm of the background field $ϕ$ is reorganized in two ways; first as a series in $λ$ alone, then as a series in $\lnϕ$ alone. By applying the renormalization group (RG) equation to $V$, these expansions can be summed. Using the condition $V^\prime(v) = 0$ (where $v$ is the vacuum expectation value of $ϕ$) in conjunction with the expansion of $V$ in powers of $\lnϕ$ fixes $V$ provided $v\neq 0$. In this case, the dependence of $V$ on $ϕ$ drops out and $V$ is not analytic in $λ$. Massless scalar electrodynamics is considered using the same approach.

Peculiarities of the Canonical Analysis of the First Order Form of the Einstein-Hilbert Action in Two Dimensions in Terms of the Metric Tensor or the Metric Density

The peculiarities of doing a canonical analysis of the first order formulation of the Einstein-Hilbert action in terms of either the metric tensor $g^{αβ}$ or the metric density $h^{αβ}= \sqrt{-g}g^{αβ}$ along with the affine connection are discussed. It is shown that the difference between using $g^{αβ}$ as opposed to $h^{αβ}$ appears only in two spacetime dimensions. Despite there being a different number of constraints in these two approaches, both formulations result in there being a local Poisson brackets algebra of constraints with field independent structure constants, closed off shell generators of gauge transformations and off shell invariance of the action. The formulation in terms of the metric tensor is analyzed in detail and compared with earlier results obtained using the metric density. The gauge transformations, obtained from the full set of first class constraints, are different from a diffeomorphism transformation in both cases.
