Identifying the Parametric Occurrence of Multiple Steady States for some Biological Networks

We consider a problem from biological network analysis of determining regions in a parameter space over which there are multiple steady states for positive real values of variables and parameters. We describe multiple approaches to address the problem using tools from Symbolic Computation. We describe how progress was made to achieve semi-algebraic descriptions of the multistationarity regions of parameter space, and compare symbolic results to numerical methods. The biological networks studied are models of the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK) network which has already consumed considerable effort using special insights into its structure of corresponding models. Our main example is a model with 11 equations in 11 variables and 19 parameters, 3 of which are of interest for symbolic treatment. The model also imposes positivity conditions on all variables and parameters. We apply combinations of symbolic computation methods designed for mixed equality/inequality systems, specifically virtual substitution, lazy real triangularization and cylindrical algebraic decomposition, as well as a simplification technique adapted from Gaussian elimination and graph theory. We are able to determine multistationarity of our main example over a 2-dimensional parameter space. We also study a second MAPK model and a symbolic grid sampling technique which can locate such regions in 3-dimensional parameter space.

A portable MBE system for in situ X-Ray investigations at synchrotron beamlines

A portable synchrotron MBE system is designed and applied for in situ investigations. The growth chamber is equipped with all the standard MBE components such as effusion cells with shutters, main shutter, cooling shroud, manipulator, RHEED setup and pressure gauges. The characteristic feature of the system is the beryllium windows which are used for in situ x-ray measurements. An UHV sample transfer case allows in-vacuo transfer of samples prepared elsewhere. We describe the system design and demonstrate it's performance by investigating the annealing process of buried InGaAs self organized quantum dots.

Quantum optical device accelerating dynamic programming

In this paper we discuss analogue computers based on quantum optical systems accelerating dynamic programming for some computational problems. These computers, at least in principle, can be realized by actually existing devices. We estimate an acceleration in resolving of some NP-hard problems that can be obtained in such a way versus deterministic computers

Selective coherent x-ray diffractive imaging of displacement fields in (Ga,Mn)As/GaAs periodical wires

Coherent x-ray diffractive imaging is extended to high resolution strain analysis in crystalline nanostructured devices. The application potential is demonstrated by determining the strain distribution in (Ga,Mn)As/GaAs nanowires. By separating diffraction signals in reciprocal spaces, individual parts of the device could be reconstructed independently by our inversion procedure. We demonstrate the method to be effective for material specific reconstruction of strain distribution in highly integrated devices.

An Improved Limit on the Muon Electric Dipole Moment

Three independent searches for an electric dipole moment (EDM) of the positive and negative muons have been performed, using spin precession data from the muon g-2 storage ring at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Details on the experimental apparatus and the three analyses are presented. Since the individual results on the positive and negative muon, as well as the combined result, d=-0.1(0.9)E-19 e-cm, are all consistent with zero, we set a new muon EDM limit, |d| < 1.9E-19 e-cm (95% C.L.). This represents a factor of 5 improvement over the previous best limit on the muon EDM.

Construction of universal Thom-Whitney-a stratifications, their functoriality and Sard-type Theorem for singular varieties

{\bf Construction.} For a dominating polynomial mapping {$F: K^n\to K^l$} with an isolated critical value at 0 ($K$ an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero) we construct a closed {\it bundle} $G_F \subset T^{*}K^n $. We restrict $ G_F $ over the critical points $Sing(F)$ of $ F$ in $ F^{-1}(0)$ and partition $Sing(F)$ into {\it 'quasistrata'} of points with the fibers of $G_F$ of constant dimension. It turns out that T-W-a (Thom and Whitney-a) stratifications 'near' $F^{-1}(0)$ exist iff the fibers of bundle $G_F$ are orthogonal to the tangent spaces at the smooth points of the quasistrata (e. g. when $ l=1$). Also, the latter are the orthogonal complements over an irreducible component $ S $ of a quasistratum only if $S $ is {\bf universal} for the class of {T-W-a} stratifications, meaning that for any $\{S_j'\}_j $ in the class, $ \Sing (F) = \cup_j S'_j $, there is a component $S' $ of an $ S_j' $ with $S\cap S'$ being open and dense in both $S $ and $ S' $. {\bf Results.} We prove that T-W-a stratifications with only universal strata exist iff all fibers of $G_F$ are the orthogonal complements to the respective tangent spaces to the quasistrata, and then the partition of $\Sing(F)$ by the latter yields the coarsest {\it universal T-W-a stratification}. The key ingredient is our version of {\bf Sard-type Theorem for singular spaces} in which a singular point is considered to be noncritical iff nonsingular points nearby are 'uniformly noncritical' (e. g. for a dominating map $ F: X \to Z $ meaning that the sum of the absolute values of the $l\times l$ minors of the Jacobian matrix of $ F $, where $ l = \dim (Z) $, not only does not vanish but, moreover, is separated from zero by a positive constant).

Analogue of Newton-Puiseux series for non-holonomic D-modules and factoring

We introduce a concept of a fractional-derivatives series and prove that any linear partial differential equation in two independent variables has a fractional-derivatives series solution with coefficients from a differentially closed field of zero characteristic. The obtained results are extended from a single equation to $D$-modules having infinite-dimensional space of solutions (i. e. non-holonomic $D$-modules). As applications we design algorithms for treating first-order factors of a linear partial differential operator, in particular for finding all (right or left) first-order factors.

Non-holonomic Ideals in the Plane and Absolute Factoring

We study {\it non-holonomic} overideals of a left differential ideal $J\subset F[\partial_x, \partial_y]$ in two variables where $F$ is a differentially closed field of characteristic zero. The main result states that a principal ideal $J=< P>$ generated by an operator $P$ with a separable {\it symbol} $symb(P)$, which is a homogeneous polynomial in two variables, has a finite number of maximal non-holonomic overideals. This statement is extended to non-holonomic ideals $J$ with a separable symbol. As an application we show that in case of a second-order operator $P$ the ideal $ $ has an infinite number of maximal non-holonomic overideals iff $P$ is essentially ordinary. In case of a third-order operator $P$ we give few sufficient conditions on $ $ to have a finite number of maximal non-holonomic overideals.

On non-abelian homomorphic public-key cryptosystems

An important problem of modern cryptography concerns secret public-key computations in algebraic structures. We construct homomorphic cryptosystems being (secret) epimorphisms f:G --> H, where G, H are (publically known) groups and H is finite. A letter of a message to be encrypted is an element h element of H, while its encryption g element of G is such that f(g)=h. A homomorphic cryptosystem allows one to perform computations (operating in a group G) with encrypted information (without knowing the original message over H). In this paper certain homomorphic cryptosystems are constructed for the first time for non-abelian groups H (earlier, homomorphic cryptosystems were known only in the Abelian case). In fact, we present such a system for any solvable (fixed) group H.

Resonant Amplification of Electroweak Baryogenesis at Preheating

We explore viable scenarios for parametric resonant amplification of electroweak (EW) gauge fields and Chern-Simons number during preheating, leading to baryogenesis at the electroweak (EW) scale. In this class of scenarios time-dependent classical EW gauge fields, essentially spatially-homogeneous on the horizon scales, carry Chern-Simons number which can be amplified by parametric resonance up to magnitudes at which unsuppressed topological transitions in the Higgs sector become possible. Baryon number non-conservation associated with the gauge sector and the highly non-equilibrium nature of preheating allow for efficient baryogenesis. The requisite large CP violation can arise either from the time dependence of a slowly varying Higgs field (spontaneous baryogenesis), or from a resonant amplification of CP violation induced in the gauge sector through loops. We identify several CP violating operators in the Standard Model and its minimal extensions that can facilitate efficient baryogenesis at preheating, and show how to overcome would-be exponential suppression of baryogenesis associated with tunneling barriers.

CMD-2 Detector Upgrade

The project of upgrading the detector CMD-2 is presented. The upgraded detector is called CMD-2M and is going to take data with new collider VEPP-2000 at BINP. The general structure of the detector CMD-2 will remain as is but major parameters of the detector, such as momentum and angular resolution for charged particle and energy and spatial resolution for photons, will be substantially improved.
