The bound origin of low-mass stellar binaries

Most main sequence stars, unlike our Sun, belong to multiple systems with two or more stars. How and when these multiples come together and become bound is uncertain, since the earliest stages of star formation are difficult to resolve. We analyze simulations of star cluster formation in Milky Way-like conditions, including all key physics and stellar feedback mechanisms, to understand how multiple systems form. We show that $\approx 70-80\%$ of binaries are gravitationally bound from the moment the second star forms. Binaries evolve and accrete together, which will affect their planetary systems and chemical evolution. Half of the binaries are disrupted by the end of the star-formation epoch, such that $\approx40\%$ of the final single stars belonged to a multiple at some point, with implications for the stellar initial mass function. Formation in multiples is the dominant mode of star formation, accounting for at least 57% of stars.

Three-dimensional modeling of beam emission spectroscopy measurements in fusion plasmas

One of the main diagnostic tools for measuring electron density profiles and the characteristics of long wavelength turbulent wave structures in fusion plasmas is Beam Emission Spectroscopy (BES). The increasing number of BES systems necessitated an accurate and comprehensive simulation of BES diagnostics, which in turn motivated the development of the RENATE simulation code that is the topic of this paper. RENATE is a modular, fully three-dimensional code incorporating all key features of BES systems from the atomic physics to the observation, including an advanced modeling of the optics. Thus RENATE can be used both in the interpretation of measured signals and the development of new BES systems. The most important components of the code have been successfully benchmarked against other simulation codes. The primary results have been validated against experimental data from the KSTAR tokamak.

Impurity flows and plateau-regime poloidal density variation in a tokamak pedestal

In the pedestal of a tokamak, the sharp radial gradients of density and temperature can give rise to poloidal variation in the density of impurities. At the same time, the flow of the impurity species is modified relative to the conventional neoclassical result. In this paper, these changes to the density and flow of a collisional impurity species are calculated for the case when the main ions are in the plateau regime. In this regime it is found that the impurity density can be higher at either the inboard or outboard side. This finding differs from earlier results for banana- or Pfirsch-Schlüter-regime main ions, in which case the impurity density is always higher at the inboard side in the absence of rotation. Finally, the modifications to the impurity flow are also given for the other regimes of main-ion collisionality.
