Microcanonical vs. canonical thermodynamics

The microcanonical ensemble is in important physical situations different from the canonical one even in the thermodynamic limit. In contrast to the canonical ensemble it does not suppress spatially inhomogeneous configurations like phase separations. It is shown how phase transitions of first order can be defined and classified unambiguously for finite systems without the use of the thermodynamic limit. It is further shown that in the case of the 10-states Potts model as well for the liquid-gas transition in Na, K, and Fe the microcanonical transition temperature, latent heat and interphase surface tension are similar to their bulk values for $\sim 200-3000$ particles. For Na and K the number of surface atoms keeps approximately constant over most of the transition energies because the evaporation of monomers is compensated by an increasing number of fragments with $\ge 2$ atoms (multifragmentation).

Microcanonical Thermodynamics of First Order Phase Transitions studied in the Potts Model

Phase transitions of first and second order can easily be distinguished in small systems in the microcanonical ensemble. Configurations of phase coexistence, which are suppressed in the canonical formulation, carry important information about the main characteristics of first order phase transitions like the transition temperature, the latent heat, and the interphase surface tension. The characterisitc backbending of the micro- canonical caloric equation of state T(E) (not to be confused with the well known Van der Waals loops in ordinary thermodynamics) leading to a negative specific heat is intimatly linked to the interphase surface entropy.

Comment on ``Phase Coexistence in Multifragmentation''

This comment on Moretto et al.PRL 76:372,1996 argues that the IMF-charge distribution may not be useful as signal for phase-transitions in nuclear multifragmentation. Fluctuations of different origin may corrupt this signal. Energy conservation is as important as charge conservation. The caloric equation of state is more safe.

Microcanonical Thermodynamics, ``Fragmentation Phase Transition'',and the Topology of the N-body Phase Space

Microcanonical thermodynamics (MT) is analysed for phase transitions of first and second order in finite systems. The transiton temperature, the latent heat and the surface tension of first order transitions can easily be determined by MT from the caloric equation of state T(E). The outstandig problem of the physical meaning of its backbending is clarified for the Potts-model. The fragmentation phase transition for nuclear multifragmentation is examined in detail. Further experimental signals of the fragmentation transition in hot nuclei are discussed.
