Maxwell's Equations, Hodge Theory, and Gravitation

A mathematical proof is given that Maxwell's equations are an {\it artifact} of Hodge theory together with the laws of Gauss and Ampère, taken as axioms. They are thus geometric in nature, independent of any specific physical mechanisms, and valid for any force field -- attractive or repulsive -- generated by a material density and current. In particular, with appropriate sign changes to reflect the attractive nature of the field, they apply to gravitational fields on Minkowski space-time as well. The linearization of the Einstein Field Equations on Minkowksi space-time leads also to a linear theory of gravity; but this theory is spin 2, while Maxwell's field theory is spin 1. Hence the two theories are distinct. The relationship of Maxwell's field theory to Einstein's geometric theory is explained for weak fields.

Gravitation and Special Relativity

A mathematical derivation of Maxwell's equations for gravitation, based on a mathematical proof of Faraday's Law, is presented. The theory provides a linear, relativistic Lagrangian field theory of gravity in a weak field, and paves the way to a better understanding of the structure of the energy-momentum tensor in the Einstein Field Equations. Hence it is directly relevant to problems in modern cosmology. The derivation, independent of the perturbation theory of Einstein's equations, puts the gravitational and electromagnetic fields on an equal footing for weak fields, contrary to generally held views. The historical objections to a linear Lorentz invariant field theory of gravity are refuted for weak fields.

Multipeakons and the Classical Moment Problem

Classical results of Stieltjes are used to obtain explicit formulas for the peakon-antipeakon solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation. The closed form solution is expressed in terms of the orthogonal polynomials of the related classical moment problem. It is shown that collisions occur only in peakon-antipeakon pairs, and the details of the collisions are analyzed using results {}from the moment problem. A sharp result on the steepening of the slope at the time of collision is given. Asymptotic formulas are given, and the scattering shifts are calculated explicitly

Soliton Collisions in the Ion Acoustic Plasma Equations

Numerical experiments involving the interaction of two solitary waves of the ion acoustic plasma equations are described. An exact 2-soliton solution of the relevant KdV equation was fitted to the initial data, and good agreement was maintained throughout the entire interaction. The data demonstrates that the soliton interactions are virtually elastic

Multipeakons and a theorem of Stieltjes

A closed form of the multi-peakon solutions of the Camassa-Holm equation is found using a theorem of Stieltjes on continued fractions. An explicit formula is obtained for the scattering shifts.

Acoustic Scattering and the Extended Korteweg deVries hierarchy

The acoustic scattering operator on the real line is mapped to a Schrödinger operator under the Liouville transformation. The potentials in the image are characterized precisely in terms of their scattering data, and the inverse transformation is obtained as a simple, linear quadrature. An existence theorem for the associated Harry Dym flows is proved, using the scattering method. The scattering problem associated with the Camassa-Holm flows on the real line is solved explicitly for a special case, which is used to reduce a general class of such problems to scattering problems on finite intervals.

Inversion of the linearized Korteweg-deVries equation at the multi-soliton solutions

Uniform estimates for the decay structure of the $n$-soliton solution of the Korteweg-deVries equation are obtained. The KdV equation, linearized at the $n$-soliton solution is investigated in a class $\WW$ consisting of sums of travelling waves plus an exponentially decaying residual term. An analog of the kernel of the time-independent equation is proposed, leading to solvability conditions on the inhomogeneous term. Estimates on the inversion of the linearized KdV equation at the $n$-soliton are obtained.

A Dirac Sea and thermodynamic equilibrium for the quantized three-wave interaction

The classical version of the three wave interaction models the creation and destruction of waves; the quantized version models the creation and destruction of particles. The quantum three wave interaction is described and the Bethe Ansatz for the eigenfunctions is given in closed form. The Bethe equations are derived in a rigorous fashion and are shown to have a thermodynamic limit. The Dirac sea of negative energy states is obtained as the infinite density limit. Finite particle/hole excitations are determined and the asymptotic relation of energy and momentum is obtained. The Yang-Yang functional for the relative free energy of finite density excitations is constructed and is shown to be convex and bounded below. The equations of thermal equilibrium are obtained.

Integrable Systems and Isomonodromy Deformations

We analyze in detail three classes of isomondromy deformation problems associated with integrable systems. The first two are related to the scaling invariance of the $n\times n$ AKNS hierarchies and the Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchies. The third arises in string theory as the representation of the Heisenberg group by $[(L^{k/n})_+,L]=I$ where $L$ is an $n^{th}$ order scalar differential operator. The monodromy data is constructed in each case; the inverse monodromy problem is solved as a Riemann-Hilbert problem; and a simple proof of the Painlevé property is given for the general case

Factorization and the Dressing Method for the Gel'fand-Dikii Hierarch

The isospectral flows of an $n^{th}$ order linear scalar differential operator $L$ under the hypothesis that it possess a Baker-Akhiezer function were originally investigated by Segal and Wilson from the point of view of infinite dimensional Grassmanians, and the reduction of the KP hierarchy to the Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchy. The associated first order systems and their formal asymptotic solutions have a rich Lie algebraic structure which was investigated by Drinfeld and Sokolov. We investigate the matrix Riemann-Hilbert factorizations for these systems, and show that different factorizations lead respectively to the potential, modified, and ordinary Gel'fand-Dikii flows. Lie algebra decompositions (the Adler-Kostant-Symes method) are obtained for the modified and potential flows. For $n>3$ the appropriate factorization for the Gel'fand-Dikii flows is not a group factorization, as would be expected; yet a modification of the dressing method still works. A direct proof, based on a Fredholm determinant associated with the factorization problem, is given that the potentials are meromorphic in $x$ and in the time variables. Potentials with Baker-Akhiezer functions include the multisoliton and rational solutions, as well as potentials in the scattering class with compactly supported scattering data. The latter are dense in the scattering class.

Action-Angle variables for the Gel'fand-Dikii flows

Using the scattering transform for $n^{th}$ order linear scalar operators, the Poisson bracket found by Gel'fand and Dikii, which generalizes the Gardner Poisson bracket for the KdV hierarchy, is computed on the scattering side. Action-angle variables are then constructed. Using this, complete integrability is demonstrated in the strong sense. Real action-angle variables are constructed in the self-adjoint case.

Complete Integrability of Completely Integrable Systems

The question of complete integrability of evolution equations associated to $n\times n$ first order isospectral operators is investigated using the inverse scattering method. It is shown that for $n>2$, e.g. for the three-wave interaction, additional (nonlinear) pointwise flows are necessary for the assertion of complete integrability. Their existence is demonstrated by constructing action-angle variables. This construction depends on the analysis of a natural 2-form and symplectic foliation for the groups GL(n) and SU(n).}
