Synchrotron x-ray spectroscopy studies of valence and magnetic state in europium metal to extreme pressures

In order to probe the changes in the valence state and magnetic properties of Eu metal under extreme pressure, x-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and synchrotron Mössbauer spectroscopy experiments have been carried out. The Mössbauer isomer shift exhibits an anomalous pressure dependence, passing through a maximum near 20 GPa. Density functional theory has been applied to give insight into the pressure-induced changes in both Eu's electronic structure and Mössbauer isomer shift. Contrary to previous reports, Eu is found to remain nearly divalent to the highest pressures reached (87 GPa) with magnetic order persisting to at least 50 GPa. These results should lead to a better understanding of the nature of the superconducting state found above 75 GPa and of the sequence of structural phase transitions observed to 92 GPa.

The nature of Ho magnetism in multiferroic HoMnO3

Using x-ray resonant magnetic scattering and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, techniques that are element specific, we have elucidated the role of Ho3+ in multiferroic HoMnO3. In zero field, Ho3+ orders antiferromagnetically with moments aligned along the hexagonal c direction below 40 K, and undergoes a transition to another magnetic structure below 4.5 K. In applied electric fields of up to 1x10^7 V/m, the magnetic structure of Ho3+ remains unchanged.

A 4-unit-cell superstructure in optimally doped YBa2Cu3O6.92 superconductor

Using high-energy diffraction we show that a 4-unit-cell superstructure, q0=(1/4,0,0), along the shorter Cu-Cu bonds coexists with superconductivity in optimally doped YBCO. A complex set of anisotropic atomic displacements on neighboring CuO chain planes, BaO planes, and CuO2 planes, respectively, correlated over ~3-6 unit cells gives rise to diffuse superlattice peaks. Our observations are consistent with the presence of Ortho-IV nanodomains containing these displacements.

X-ray resonant magnetic scattering from structurally and magnetically rough interfaces in multilayered systems I. Specular reflectivity

The theoretical formulation of x-ray resonant magnetic scattering from rough surfaces and interfaces is given for specular reflectivity. A general expression is derived for both structurally and magnetically rough interfaces in the distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) as the framework of the theory. For this purpose, we have defined a ``structural'' and a ``magnetic'' interface to represent the actual interfaces. A generalization of the well-known Nevot-Croce formula for specular reflectivity is obtained for the case of a single rough magnetic interface using the self-consistent method. Finally, the results are generalized to the case of multiple interfaces, as in the case of thin films or multilayers. Theoretical calculations for each of the cases are illustrated with numerical examples and compared with experimental results of magnetic reflectivity from a Gd/Fe multilayer.

X-Ray-Diffraction Study of Charge-Density-Waves and Oxygen-Ordering in YBa2Cu3O6+x Superconductor

We report a temperature-dependent increase below 300 K of diffuse superlattice peaks corresponding to q_0 =(~2/5,0,0) in an under-doped YBa_2Cu_3O_6+x superconductor (x~0.63). These peaks reveal strong c-axis correlations involving the CuO_2 bilayers, show a non-uniform increase below \~220 K with a plateau for ~100-160 K, and appear to saturate in the superconducting phase. We interpret this unconventional T-dependence of the ``oxygen-ordering'' peaks as a manifestation of a charge density wave in the CuO_2 planes coupled to the oxygen-vacancy ordering.

Jahn-Teller Impurity States in LaSrCuO: XAFS Evidence and Implications for High Tc Superconductivity

Polarized XAFS measurements on powder of LaSrCuO with aligned c-axes find that apical oxygens neighboring only the Sr dopants have a double-site distribution. This result requires that the doped holes reside in impurity states peaked on the CuO6 octahedron neighboring the dopant (denoted as Sr-octahedrons). A model of the double site is presented of two co-existing spin differentiated (singlet and triplet) Jahn-Teller (JT) distortions of the Sr-octahedrons induced by an extrinsic doped hole pairing with the intrinsic hole. It is speculated that Bose-condensation of the singlet pairs, bound by more than 0.1 eV, produces superconductivity.
