Measurement of reconstructed final-state kinematics in charged-current interactions on water using the J-PARC $\nu_\mu$ beam and NINJA emulsion detector

We present a study of charged-particle multiplicities and the kinematic distributions of muons, protons, and charged pions in a flux-integrated sample of charged-current inclusive $\nu_\mu$ interactions on water recorded with the NINJA nuclear emulsion detector exposed to the J-PARC $\nu_\mu$-focused beam. The data correspond to an exposure of $4.63\times10^{20}$ protons on target, with a neutrino energy spectrum peaked at 0.7 GeV. In this analysis, 82 events are selected from a fiducial water volume with a mass of 3.9 kg, corresponding to 5% of the total water target mass exposed during the run. The reconstructed distributions are compared with Monte Carlo predictions based on the interaction model used in the T2K experiment. The observed distributions are generally consistent with the predictions within the estimated uncertainties, although the proton angular distribution exhibits some tension with the prediction. The results are currently limited by statistical uncertainties. This analysis provides the first study of proton kinematics with sensitivity to proton momenta as low as 200 MeV/$c$ with a $\nu_\mu$-focused beam on a water target using nuclear emulsion data and establishes the analysis framework for future measurements with substantially larger NINJA data samples.

Nuclear Structure Relevant to Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay: 76Ge and 76Se

The possibility of observing neutrinoless double beta decay offers the opportunity of determining the neutrino mass IF the nuclear matrix element were known. Theoretical calculations are uncertain and measurements of the occupations of valence orbits by nucleons active in the decay can be important. The occupation of valence neutron orbits in the ground states of 76Ge and 76Se were determined by precisely measuring cross sections for both neutron-adding and removing transfer reactions. Our results indicate that the Fermi surface is much more diffuse than in theoretical (QRPA) calculations. We find that the populations of at least three orbits change significantly between these two ground states while in the calculations the changes are confined primarily to one orbit.

Pair correlations in nuclei involved in neutrinoless double beta decay: 76Ge and 76Se

Precision measurements were carried out to test the similarities between the ground states of 76Ge and 76Se. The extent to which these two nuclei can be characterized as consisting of correlated pairs of neutrons in a BCS-like ground state was studied. The pair removal (p,t) reaction was measured at the far forward angle of 3 degrees. The relative cross sections are consistent (at the 5% level) with the description of these nuclei in terms of a correlated pairing state outside the N=28 closed shells with no pairing vibrations. Data were also obtained for 74Ge and 78Se.

A Dirac-Hartree-Bogoliubov approximation for finite nuclei

We develop a complete Dirac-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation to the ground state wave function and energy of finite nuclei. We apply it to spin-zero proton-proton and neutron-neutron pairing within the Dirac-Hartree-Bogoliubov approximation (we neglect the Fock term), using a zero-range approximation to the relativistic pairing tensor. We study the effects of the pairing on the properties of the even-even nuclei of the isotopic chains of Ca, Ni and Sn (spherical) and Kr and Sr (deformed), as well as the $N$=28 isotonic chain, and compare our results with experimental data and with other recent calculations.

Systematic Study of Triaxial Deformation in the Relativistic Mean Field Theory

We use the relativistic mean field (RMF) theory to systematically study the change of deformation of even-even nuclei in the proton-rich Xe region. We investigate the appearance of triaxial deformation in 25 nuclei in the region covering Z=50-58 and N=64-72 by performing constrained, triaxially symmetric RMF calculations of their energy surfaces. We include pairing correlations using the BCS formalism. We find that the Sn isotopes are spherical and the Te isotopes are very gamma unstable with shallow minima around gamma = 60 degrees. Adding more protons, the Xe, Ba and Ce isotopes have prolate deformations with their sizes increasing with proton number. The neutron number dependence is found to be small. We compare the calculated results with the available experimented data on the binding energy and the radii.
