Echo-Ramsey Interferometry with Motional Quantum States

Ramsey interferometers (RIs) using internal electronic or nuclear states find wide applications in science and engineering. We develop a matter wave Ramsey interferometer for motional quantum states exploiting the S- and D-bands of an optical lattice and identify the different de-phasing and de-coherence mechanisms. We implement a band echo technique, employing repeated $π$-pulses. This suppresses the de-phasing evolution and significantly increase the coherence time of the motional state interferometer by one order of magnitude. We identify thermal fluctuations as the main mechanism for the remaining decay contrast. Our demonstration of an echo-Ramsey interferometer with motional quantum states in an optical lattice has potential application in the study of quantum many body lattice dynamics, and motional qubits manipulation.

Superconductivity across Lifshitz transition and anomalous insulating state in surface K-dosed (Li0.8Fe0.2OH)FeSe

In the iron-based superconductors, understanding the relation between superconductivity and electronic structure upon doping is crucial for exploring the pairing mechanism. Recently it was found that in iron selenide (FeSe), enhanced superconductivity (Tc over 40K) can be achieved via electron doping, with the Fermi surface only comprising M-centered electron pockets. Here by utilizing surface potassium dosing, scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/STS) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we studied the electronic structure and superconductivity of (Li0.8Fe0.2OH)FeSe in the deep electron-doped regime. We find that a Γ-centered electron band, which originally lies above the Fermi level (EF), can be continuously tuned to cross EF and contribute a new electron pocket at Γ. When this Lifshitz transition occurs, the superconductivity in the M-centered electron pocket is slightly suppressed; while a possible superconducting gap with small size (up to ~5 meV) and a dome-like doping dependence is observed on the new Γ electron pocket. Upon further K dosing, the system eventually evolves into an insulating state. Our findings provide new clues to understand superconductivity versus Fermi surface topology and the correlation effect in FeSe-based superconductors.

Collective excitations of dynamic Fermi surface deformations in BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.5}$P$_{0.5}$)$_2$

We use electronic Raman scattering to study the low-energy excitations in BaFe$_2$(As$_{0.5}$P$_{0.5}$)$_2$ ($T_c \approx 16$ K) samples. In addition to a superconducting pair breaking peak (2$Δ=6.7$ meV) in the A$_{1g}$ channel with a linear tail towards zero energy, suggesting a nodal gap structure, we detect spectral features associated to Pomeranchuk oscillations in the A$_{1g}$, B$_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ channels. We argue that the small Fermi energy of the system is an essential condition for these Pomeranchuk oscillations to be underdamped. The Pomeranchuk oscillations have the same frequencies in the B$_{1g}$ and B$_{2g}$ channels, which we explain by the mixing of these symmetries resulting from the removal of the $σ_v$ and $σ_v$ symmetry planes due to a large As/P disorder. Interestingly, we show that the temperature at which the peaks corresponding to the Pomeranchuk oscillations get underdamped is consistent with the non-Fermi liquid to Femi liquid crossover determined by transport, suggesting that the Pomeranchuk instability plays an important role in the low-energy physics of the Fe-based superconductors.

Model-independent determination of the strong-phase difference between D^0 and D^0-bar-> K^0_S,L h^+ h^- (h=pi,K) and its impact on the measurement of the CKM angle gamma/phi_3

We report the first determination of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L K^+ K^-. In addition, we present updated measurements of the relative strong-phase difference between D^0 -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^- and D^0-bar -> K^0_S,L pi^+ pi^-. Both measurements exploit the quantum coherence between a pair of D^0 and D^0-bar mesons produced from psi(3770) decays. The strong-phase differences measured are important for determining the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa angle gamma/phi_3 in B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde decays, where D^0-tilde is a D^0 or D^0-bar meson decaying to K^0_S h^+ h^- (h=pi,K), in a manner independent of the model assumed to describe the D^0 -> K^0_S h^+ h^- decay. Using our results, the uncertainty in gamma/phi_3 due to the error on the strong-phase difference is expected to be between 1.7 and 3.9 degrees for an analysis using B^- K^- D^0-tilde D^0-tilde -> K^0_S pi^+ pi^- decays, and between 3.2 and 3.9 degrees for an analysis based on B^- -> K^- D^0-tilde, D^0-tilde -> K^0_S K^+ K^- decays. A measurement is also presented of the CP-odd fraction, F_-, of the decay D^0 -> K^0_S K^+ K^- in the region of the phi -> K^+ K^- resonance. We find that in a region within 0.01 GeV^2/c^4 of the nominal phi mass squared F_- > 0.91 at the 90% confidence level.

Quantum coherence in ultrastrong optomechanics

Ultrastrong light-matter interaction in an optomechanical system can result in nonlinear optical effects such as photon blockade. The system-bath couplings in such systems play an essential role in observing these effects. Here we study the quantum coherence of an optomechanical system with a dressed-state master equation approach. Our master equation includes photon-number-dependent terms that induce dephasing in this system. Cavity dephasing, second-order photon correlation, and two-cavity entanglement are studied with the dressed-state master equation.

Phase Separation, Competition, and Volume Fraction Control in NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As

We report a detailed nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) study by combined $^{23}$Na and $^{75}$As measurements over a broad range of doping to map the phase diagram of NaFe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$As. In the underdoped regime ($x \le$ 0.017), we find a magnetic phase with robust antiferromagnetic (AFM) order, which we denote the {\it s}-AFM phase, cohabiting with a phase of weak and possibly proximity-induced AFM order ({\it w}-AFM) whose volume fraction $V \simeq 8$\% is approximately constant. Near optimal doping, at $x = 0.0175$, we observe a phase separation between static antiferromagnetism related to the {\it s}-AFM phase and a paramagnetic (PM) phase related to {\it w}-AFM. The volume fraction of AFM phase increases upon cooling, but both the N{é}el temperature and the volume fraction can be suppressed systematically by applying a $c$-axis magnetic field. On cooling below $T_c$, superconductivity occupies the PM region and its volume fraction grows at the expense of the AFM phase, demonstrating a phase separation of the two types of order based on volume exclusion. At higher dopings, static antiferromagnetism and even critical AFM fluctuations are completely suppressed by superconductivity. Thus the phase diagram we establish contains two distinct types of phase separation and reflects a strong competition between AFM and superconducting phases both in real space and in momentum space. We suggest that both this strict mutual exclusion and the robustness of superconductivity against magnetism are consequences of the extreme two-dimensionality of NaFeAs.

First Measurement of the Form Factors in the Decays D0 to rho- e+ nu_e and D+ to rho0 e+ nu_e

Using the entire CLEO-c psi(3770) to DDbar event sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 818 pb^-1 and approximately 5.4 x 10^6 DDbar events, we measure the form factors for the decays D0 to rho- e+ nu_e and D+ to rho0 e+ nu_e for the first time and the branching fractions with improved precision. A four-dimensional unbinned maximum likelihood fit determines the form factor ratios to be: V(0)/A_1(0) = 1.48 +- 0.15 +- 0.05 and A_2(0)/A_1(0)= 0.83 +- 0.11 +- 0.04. Assuming CKM unitarity, the known D meson lifetimes and our measured branching fractions we obtain the form factor normalizations A_1(0), A_2(0), and V(0). We also present a measurement of the branching fraction for D^+ to omega e^+ nu_e with improved precision.

Observation of the h_c(1P) using e^+e^- collisions above DDbar threshold

Using 586pb^-1 of e^+e^- collision data at E_CM = 4170MeV, produced at the CESR collider and collected with the CLEO-c detector, we observe the process e^+e^- --> pi^+ pi^- h_c(1P). We measure its cross section to be 15.6+-2.3+-1.9+-3.0pb, where the third error is due to the external uncertainty on the branching fraction of psi(2S) --> pi^0 h_c(1P), which we use for normalization. We also find evidence for e^+e^- --> eta h_c(1P) at 4170MeV at the 3sigma level, and see hints of a rise in the e^+e^- --> pi^+ pi^- h_c(1P) cross section at 4260MeV.

Analysis of the Decay D^0 to K^0_S pi^0 pi^0

We present the results of a Dalitz plot analysis of D^0 to K^0_S pi^0 pi^0 using the CLEO-c data set of 818 inverse pico-barns of e^+ e^- collisions accumulated at sqrt{s} = 3.77 GeV. This corresponds to three million D^0 D^0-bar pairs from which we select 1,259 tagged candidates with a background of 7.5 +- 0.9 percent. Several models have been explored, all of which include the K^*(892), K^*_2(1430), K^*(1680), the f_0(980), and the sigma(500). We find that the combined pi^0 pi^0 S-wave contribution to our preferred fit is (28.9 +- 6.3 +- 3.1)% of the total decay rate while D^0 to K^*(892)^0 pi^0 contributes (65.6 +- 5.3 +- 2.5)%. Using three tag modes and correcting for quantum correlations we measure the D^0 to K^0_S pi^0 pi^0 branching fraction to be (1.059 +- 0.038 +- 0.061)%.

Efficient Reinforcement Learning Using Recursive Least-Squares Methods

The recursive least-squares (RLS) algorithm is one of the most well-known algorithms used in adaptive filtering, system identification and adaptive control. Its popularity is mainly due to its fast convergence speed, which is considered to be optimal in practice. In this paper, RLS methods are used to solve reinforcement learning problems, where two new reinforcement learning algorithms using linear value function approximators are proposed and analyzed. The two algorithms are called RLS-TD(lambda) and Fast-AHC (Fast Adaptive Heuristic Critic), respectively. RLS-TD(lambda) can be viewed as the extension of RLS-TD(0) from lambda=0 to general lambda within interval [0,1], so it is a multi-step temporal-difference (TD) learning algorithm using RLS methods. The convergence with probability one and the limit of convergence of RLS-TD(lambda) are proved for ergodic Markov chains. Compared to the existing LS-TD(lambda) algorithm, RLS-TD(lambda) has advantages in computation and is more suitable for online learning. The effectiveness of RLS-TD(lambda) is analyzed and verified by learning prediction experiments of Markov chains with a wide range of parameter settings. The Fast-AHC algorithm is derived by applying the proposed RLS-TD(lambda) algorithm in the critic network of the adaptive heuristic critic method. Unlike conventional AHC algorithm, Fast-AHC makes use of RLS methods to improve the learning-prediction efficiency in the critic. Learning control experiments of the cart-pole balancing and the acrobot swing-up problems are conducted to compare the data efficiency of Fast-AHC with conventional AHC. From the experimental results, it is shown that the data efficiency of learning control can also be improved by using RLS methods in the learning-prediction process of the critic. The performance of Fast-AHC is also compared with that of the AHC method using LS-TD(lambda). Furthermore, it is demonstrated in the experiments that different initial values of the variance matrix in RLS-TD(lambda) are required to get better performance not only in learning prediction but also in learning control. The experimental results are analyzed based on the existing theoretical work on the transient phase of forgetting factor RLS methods.

Detecting hidden spatial and spatio-temporal structures in glasses and complex physical systems by multiresolution network clustering

We elaborate on a general method that we recently introduced for characterizing the "natural" structures in complex physical systems via a multiscale network based approach for the data mining of such structures. The approach is based on "community detection" wherein interacting particles are partitioned into "an ideal gas" of optimally decoupled groups of particles. Specifically, we construct a set of network representations ("replicas") of the physical system based on interatomic potentials and apply a multiscale clustering ("multiresolution community detection") analysis using information-based correlations among the replicas. Replicas may be (i) different representations of an identical static system or (ii) embody dynamics by when considering replicas to be time separated snapshots of the system (with a tunable time separation) or (iii) encode general correlations when different replicas correspond to different representations of the entire history of the system as it evolves in space-time. We apply our method to computer simulations of a binary Kob-Andersen Lennard-Jones system, a ternary model system, and to atomic coordinates in a ZrPt system as gleaned by reverse Monte Carlo analysis of experimentally determined structure factors. We identify the dominant structures (disjoint or overlapping) and general length scales by analyzing extrema of the information theory measures. We speculate on possible links between (i) physical transitions or crossovers and (ii) changes in structures found by this method as well as phase transitions associated with the computational complexity of the community detection problem. We briefly also consider continuum approaches and discuss the shear penetration depth in elastic media; this length scale increases as the system becomes increasingly rigid.

Measurements of branching fractions for electromagnetic transitions involving the $χ_{bJ}(1P)$ states

Using 9.32, 5.88 million Upsilon(2S,3S) decays taken with the CLEO-III detector, we obtain five product branching fractions for the exclusive processes Upsilon(2S) => gamma chi_{b0,1,2}(1P) => gamma gamma Upsilon(1S) and Upsilon(3S) => gamma chi_{b1,2}(1P) => gamma gamma Upsilon(1S). We observe the transition chi_{b0}(1P) => gamma Upsilon(1S) for the first time. Using the known branching fractions for B[Upsilon(2S) => gamma chi_{bJ}(1P)], we extract values for B[chi_{bJ}(1P) => gamma Upsilon(1S)] for J=0, 1, 2. In turn, these values can be used to unfold the Upsilon(3S) product branching fractions to obtain values for B[Upsilon(3S) => gamma chi_{b1,2}(1P) for the first time individually. Comparison of these with each other and with the branching fraction B[Upsilon(3S) => gamma chi_{b0}] previously measured by CLEO provides tests of relativistic corrections to electric dipole matrix elements.

Upsilon(1S)->gamma+f2'(1525); f2'(1525)->K0sK0s decays

We report on a study of exclusive radiative decays of the Upsilon(1S) resonance into a final state consisting of a photon and two K0s candidates. We find evidence for a signal for Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525); f_2'(1525)->K0sK0s, at a rate (4.0+/-1.3+/-0.6)x10^{-5}, consistent with previous observations of Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525); f_2'(1525)->K+K-, and isospin. Combining this branching fraction with existing branching fraction measurements of Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525) and J/psi->gamma f_2'(1525), we obtain the ratio of branching fractions: B(Upsilon(1S)->gamma f_2'(1525))/B(J/psi->gamma f_2'(1525))=0.09+/-0.02, approximately consistent with expectations based on soft collinear effective theory.

Search for rare and forbidden decays of charm and charmed-strange mesons to final states h^+- e^-+ e^+

We have searched for flavor-changing neutral current decays and lepton-number-violating decays of D^+ and D^+_s mesons to final states of the form h^+- e^-+ e^+, where h is either πor K. We use the complete samples of CLEO-c open-charm data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 818 pb^-1 at the center-of-mass energy E_CM = 3.774 GeV containing 2.4 x 10^6 D^+D^- pairs and 602 pb^-1 at E_CM = 4.170 GeV containing 0.6 x 10^6 D^*+-_s D^-+_s pairs. No signal is observed in any channel, and we obtain 90% confidence level upper limits on branching fractions B(D^+ --> π^+ e^+ e^-) < 5.9 x 10^-6, B(D^+ --> π^- e^+ e^+) < 1.1 x 10^-6, B(D^+ --> K^+ e^+ e^-) < 3.0 x 10^-6, B(D^+ --> K^- e^+ e^+) < 3.5 x 10^-6, B(D^+_s --> π^+ e^+ e^-) < 2.2 x 10^-5, B(D^+_s --> π^- e^+ e^+) < 1.8 x 10^-5, B(D^+_s --> K^+ e^+ e^-) < 5.2 x 10^-5, and B(D^+_s --> K^- e^+ e^+) < 1.7 x 10^-5.

Study of psi(2S) Decays to gamma p bar{p}, pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} and Search for p bar{p} Threshold Enhancements

The decays of psi(2S) into gamma p bar{p}, pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} have been studied with the CLEO-c detector using a sample of 24.5 million psi(2S) events obtained from e^+e^- annihilations at sqrt{s} = 3686 MeV. The data show evidence for the excitation of several N^* resonances in p pi^0 and p eta channels in pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} decays, and f_2 states in gamma p bar{p} decay. Branching fractions for decays of psi(2S) to gamma p bar{p}, pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} have been determined. No evidence for p bar{p} threshold enhancements was found in the reactions psi(2S)-> X p bar{p}, where X = gamma, pi^0, eta. We do, however, find confirming evidence for a p bar{p} threshold enhancement in J/psi-> gamma p bar{p} as previously reported by BES.
