Phase diagram and isotope effect in (PrEu)_0.7Ca_0.3CoO_3 cobaltites exhibiting spin-state transitions

We present the study of magnetization, thermal expansion, specific heat, resistivity, and a.c. susceptibility of (Pr$_{1-y}$Eu$_y$)$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$CoO$_3$ cobaltites. The measurements were performed on ceramic samples with $y = 0.12 - 0.26$ and $y = 1$. Based on these results, we construct the phase diagram, including magnetic and spin-state transitions. The transition from the low- to intermediate-spin state is observed for the samples with $y > 0.18$, whereas for a lower Eu-doping level, there are no spin-state transitions, but a crossover between the ferromagnetic and paramagnetic states occurs. The effect of oxygen isotope substitution along with Eu doping on the magnetic/spin state is discussed. The oxygen-isotope substitution ($^{16}$O by $^{18}$O) is found to shift both the magnetic and spin-state phase boundaries to lower Eu concentrations. The isotope effect on the spin-state transition temperature ($y > 0.18$) is rather strong, but it is much weaker for the transition to a ferromagnetic state ($y < 0.18$). The ferromagnetic ordering in the low-Eu doped samples is shown to be promoted by the Co$^{4+}$ ions, which favor the formation of the intermediate-spin state of neighboring Co$^{3+}$ ions.

Phase separation in doped systems with spin-state transitions

Spin-state transitions, observed in many transition metal compounds containing Co$^{3+}$ and Fe$^{2+}$, may occur with the change of temperature, pressure, but also with doping, in which case the competition of single-site effects and kinetic energy of doped carriers can favor a change in the spin state. We consider this situation in a simple model, formally resembling that used for manganites in Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 267210 (2005). Based on such a model, we predict the possibility of a jump-like change in the number of Co$^{3+}$ ions undergoing spin-state transition caused by hole doping. A tendency to the electronic phase separation within a wide doping range is demonstrated. Phase diagrams with the regions of phase separation are constructed at different values of the characteristic parameters of the model.

Ising magnetism and ferroelectricity in Ca$_3$CoMnO$_6$

The origin of both the Ising chain magnetism and ferroelectricity in Ca$_3$CoMnO$_6$ is studied by $ab$ $initio$ electronic structure calculations and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. We find that Ca$_3$CoMnO$_6$ has the alternate trigonal prismatic Co$^{2+}$ and octahedral Mn$^{4+}$ sites in the spin chain. Both the Co$^{2+}$ and Mn$^{4+}$ are in the high spin state. In addition, the Co$^{2+}$ has a huge orbital moment of 1.7 $μ_B$ which is responsible for the significant Ising magnetism. The centrosymmetric crystal structure known so far is calculated to be unstable with respect to exchange striction in the experimentally observed $\uparrow\uparrow\downarrow\downarrow$ antiferromagnetic structure for the Ising chain. The calculated inequivalence of the Co-Mn distances accounts for the ferroelectricity.

Metal-Insulator Transition and Orbital Order in PbRuO3

Anomalous low temperature electronic and structural behaviour has been discovered in PbRuO3. The structure (space group Pnma, a = 5.56314(1), b = 7.86468(1), c = 5.61430(1) A) and metallic conductivity at 290 K are similar to those of SrRuO3 and other ruthenate perovskites, but a sharp metal-insulator transition at which the resistivity increases by four orders of magnitude is discovered at 90 K. This is accompanied by a first order structural transition to an Imma phase (a = 5.56962(1), b = 7.74550(1), c = 5.66208(1) A at 25 K) that shows a coupling of Ru4+ 4d orbital order to distortions from Pb2+ 6s6p orbital hybridization. The Pnma to Imma transition is an unconventional reversal of the group-subgroup symmetry relationship. No long range magnetic order is evident down to 1.5 K. Electronic structure calculations show that hybridization of Pb 6s6p and Ru 4d orbitals and strong spin-orbit coupling stabilise this previously hidden ground state for ruthenate perovskites

Enhanced dimerization of TiOCl under pressure: spin-Peierls - to - Peierls transition

We report high-pressure x-ray diffraction and magnetization measurements combined with ab-initio calculations to demonstrate that the high-pressure optical and transport transitions recently reported in TiOCl, correspond in fact to an enhanced Ti3+-Ti3+ dimerization existing already at room temperature. Our results confirm the formation of a metal-metal bond between Ti3+ ions along the b-axis of TiOCl, accompanied by a strong reduction of the electronic gap. The evolution of the dimerization with pressure suggests a crossover from the spin-Peierls to a conventional Peierls situation at high pressures.

Doped orbitally-ordered systems: another case of phase separation

A possible mechanism of electronic phase separation in the systems with orbital ordering is analyzed. We suggest a simple model taking into account an interplay between the delocalization of charge carriers introduced by doping and the cooperative ordering of local lattice distortions. The proposed mechanism is quite similar to the double exchange usually invoked for interpretation of phase separation in doped magnetic oxides like manganites, but can be efficient even in the absence of any magnetic ordering. It is demonstrated that the delocalized charge carriers favor the formation of nanoscale inhomogeneities with the orbital structure different from that in the undoped material. The directional character of orbitals leads to inhomogeneities of different shapes and sizes.

Homopolar bond formation in ZnV$_2$O$_4$ close to a metal-insulator transition

Electronic structure calculations for spinel vanadate ZnV$_2$O$_4$ show that partial electronic delocalization in this system leads to structural instabilities. These are a consequence of the proximity to the itinerant-electron boundary, not being related to orbital ordering. We discuss how this mechanism naturally couples charge and lattice degrees of freedom in magnetic insulators close to such a crossover. For the case of ZnV$_2$O$_4$, this leads to the formation of V-V dimers along the [011] and [101] directions that readily accounts for the intriguing magnetic structure of ZnV$_2$O$_4$.

Spin-state polaron in lightly hole-doped LaCoO_3

Inelastic neutron scattering (INS), electron spin (ESR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements were employed to establish the origin of the strong magnetic signal in lightly hole-doped La_{1-x}Sr_xCoO_3, x=0.002. Both, INS and ESR low temperature spectra show intense excitations with large effective g-factors ~10-18. NMR data indicate the creation of extended magnetic clusters. From the Q-dependence of the INS magnetic intensity we conclude that the observed anomalies are caused by the formation of octahedrally shaped spin-state polarons comprising seven Co ions.

CaCrO3: an anomalous antiferromagnetic metallic oxide

Combining infrared reflectivity, transport, susceptibility and several diffraction techniques, we find compelling evidence that CaCrO3 is a rare case of a metallic and antiferromagnetic transition-metal oxide with a three-dimensional electronic structure. LSDA calculations correctly describe the metallic behavior as well as the anisotropic magnetic ordering pattern of C type: The high Cr valence state induces via sizeable pd hybridization remarkably strong next-nearest neighbor interactions stabilizing this ordering. The subtle balance of magnetic interactions gives rise to magneto-elastic coupling, explaining pronounced structural anomalies observed at the magnetic ordering transition.

Classical dimers and dimerized superstructure in orbitally degenerate honeycomb antiferromagnet

We discuss the ground state of the spin-orbital model for spin-one ions with partially filled $t_{2g}$ levels on a honeycomb lattice. We find that the orbital degrees of freedom induce a spontaneous dimerization of spins and drive them into nonmagnetic manifold spanned by hard-core dimer (spin-singlet) coverings of the lattice. The cooperative ``dimer Jahn-Teller'' effect is introduced through a magnetoelastic coupling and is shown to lift the orientational degeneracy of dimers leading to a peculiar valence bond crystal pattern. The present theory provides a theoretical explanation of nonmagnetic dimerized superstructure experimentally seen in Li$_2$RuO$_3$ compound at low temperatures.

Electronic structure and magnetic properties of pyroxenes (Li,Na)TM(Si,Ge)2O6: novel low-dimensional magnets with 90 bonds

The results of the LSDA+U calculations for pyroxenes with diverse magnetic properties (Li,Na)TM(Si,Ge)$_2$O$_6$, where TM is the transition metal ion (Ti,V,Cr,Mn,Fe), are presented. We show that the anisotropic orbital ordering results in the spin-gap formation in NaTiSi$_2$O$_6$. The detailed analysis of different contributions to the intrachain exchange interactions for pyroxenes is performed both analytically using perturbation theory and basing on the results of the band structure calculations. The antiferromagnetic $t_{2g}-t_{2g}$ exchange is found to decrease gradually in going from Ti to Fe. It turns out to be nearly compensated by ferromagnetic interaction between half-filled $t_{2g}$ and empty $e_g$ orbitals in Cr-based pyroxenes. The fine-tuning of the interaction parameters by the crystal structure results in the ferromagnetism for NaCrGe$_2$O$_6$. Further increase of the total number of electrons and occupation of $e_g$ sub-shell makes the $t_{2g}-e_g$ contribution and total exchange interaction antiferromagnetic for Mn- and Fe-based pyroxenes. Strong oxygen polarization was found in Fe-based pyroxenes. It is shown that this effect leads to a considerable reduction of antiferromagnetic intrachain exchange. The obtained results may serve as a basis for the analysis of diverse magnetic properties of pyroxenes, including those with recently discovered multiferroic behavior.

Pyroxenes: A new class of multiferroics

Pyroxenes with the general formula $AM$Si$_2$O$_6$ ($A$ = mono- or divalent metal, $M$ = di- or trivalent metal) are shown to be a new class of multiferroic materials. In particular, we have found so far that NaFeSi$_2$O$_6$ becomes ferroelectric in a magnetically ordered state below $\simeq 6$ K. Similarly, magnetically driven ferroelectricity is also detected in the Li homologues, LiFeSi$_2$O$_6$ ($T_C \simeq 18$ K) and LiCrSi$_2$O$_6$ ($T_C \simeq 11$ K). In all these monoclinic systems the electric polarization can be strongly modified by magnetic fields. Measurements of magnetic susceptibility, pyroelectric current and dielectric constants (and their dependence on magnetic field) are performed using a natural crystal of aegirine (NaFeSi$_2$O$_6$) and synthetic crystals of LiFeSi$_2$O$_6$ and LiCrSi$_2$O$_6$ grown from melt solution. For NaFeSi$_2$O$_6$ a temperature versus magnetic field phase diagram for NaFeSi$_2$O$_6$ is proposed. Exchange constants are computed on the basis of {\it ab initio} band structure calculations. The possibility of a spiral magnetic structure caused by frustration as origin of the multiferroic behaviour is discussed. We propose that other pyroxenes may also be multiferroic, and that the versatility of this family offers an exceptional opportunity to study general conditions for and mechanisms of magnetically driven ferroelectricity.

Orbital ordering in the ferromagnetic insulator Cs$_2$AgF$_4$ from first principles

We found, using density-functional theory calculations within the generalized gradient approximation, that Cs$_2$AgF$_4$ is stabilized in the insulating orthorhombic phase rather than in the metallic tetragonal phase. The lattice distortion present in the orthorhombic phase corresponds to the $x^2-z^2$/$y^2-z^2$ hole-orbital ordering of the Ag$^{2+}$ $4d^9$ ions, and this orbital ordering leads to the observed ferromagnetism, as confirmed by the present total-energy calculations. This picture holds in the presence of moderate 4d-electron correlation. The results are compared with the picture of ferromagnetism based on the metallic tetragonal phase.

Insulating state and the importance of the spin-orbit coupling in Ca$_3$CoRhO$_6$

We have carried out a comparative theoretical study of the electronic structure of the novel one-dimensional Ca$_3$CoRhO$_6$ and Ca$_3$FeRhO$_6$ systems. The insulating antiferromagnetic state for the Ca$_3$FeRhO$_6$ can be well explained by band structure calculations with the closed shell high-spin $d^5$ (Fe$^{3+}$) and low-spin $t_{2g}^{6}$ (Rh$^{3+}$) configurations. We found for the Ca$_3$CoRhO$_6$ that the Co has a strong tendency to be $d^7$ (Co$^{2+}$) rather than $d^6$ (Co$^{3+}$), and that there is an orbital degeneracy in the local Co electronic structure. We argue that it is the spin-orbit coupling which will lift this degeneracy thereby enabling local spin density approximation + Hubbard U (LSDA+U) band structure calculations to generate the band gap. We predict that the orbital contribution to the magnetic moment in Ca$_3$CoRhO$_6$ is substantial, i.e. significantly larger than 1 $μ_B$ per formula unit. Moreover, we propose a model for the contrasting intra-chain magnetism in both materials.

Effect of light Sr doping on the spin-state transition in LaCoO_3

We present an inelastic neutron scattering study of the low energy crystal-field excitations in the lightly doped cobalt perovskite La_0.998Sr_0.002CoO_3. In contrast to the parent compound LaCoO_3 an inelastic peak at energy transfer ~0.75 meV was found at temperatures below 30 K. This excitation apparently corresponds to a transition between a ground state orbital singlet and a higher excited orbital doublet, originating from a high-spin triplet split by a small trigonal crystal field. Another inelastic peak at an energy transfer ~0.6 meV was found at intermediate temperatures starting from T > 30 K. This confirms the presence of a thermally induced spin-state transition from the low-spin Co^3+ to a magnetic high-spin state in the non-disturbed LaCoO_3 matrix. We suggest that hole doping of LaCoO_3 leads to the creation of a magnetic polaron and hence to the low-to-high spin state transition on the relevant Co sites.

Formation of an unconventional Ag valence state in Ag2NiO2

The Ag ion in the recently synthesized novel material Ag2NiO2 adopts an extremely unusual valency of 1/2, leaving the Ni ion as 3+, rather than the expected 2+. Using first principles calculations, we show that this mysterious subvalent state emerges due to a strong bonding-antibonding interaction between the two Ag layers which drives the lower band beneath the O p complex, eliminating the possibility of a conventional Ag 1+ valence state. The strong renormalization of the specific heat coefficient, gamma, is likely due to strong spin fluctuations that stem from nearly complete compensation of the ferro- (metallic double exchange and the 90 degree superexchange) and antiferromagnetic (conventional superexchange via Ni-O-Ag-O-Ni path) interactions.

Comment on ``Sodium Pyroxene NaTiSi$_2$O$_6$: Possible Haldane Spin-1 Chain System''

Magnetic and electronic properties of NaTiSi$_2$O$_6$ in low temperature phase were studied in the framework of the LDA+U approximation. We stress that neglecting correlation effects in LSDA calculations one obtains not only several times smaller value of the band gap, but also fails to describe magnetic properties of NaTiSi$_2$O$_6$. Our LDA+U results confirm formation of singlet Ti-Ti dimers in low temperature phase of NaTiSi$_2$O$_6$ driven by corresponding orbital ordering [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 71, 1423 (2002)], but strongly disagree with the LSDA results and interpretations of Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 036401 (2004).

Orbitally driven spin-singlet dimerization in $S$=1 La$_{4}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{10}$

Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ru-$L_{2,3}$ edge we reveal that the Ru$^{4+}$ ions remain in the $S$=1 spin state across the rare 4d-orbital ordering transition and spin-gap formation. We find using local spin density approximation + Hubbard U (LSDA+U) band structure calculations that the crystal fields in the low temperature phase are not strong enough to stabilize the $S$=0 state. Instead, we identify a distinct orbital ordering with a significant anisotropy of the antiferromagnetic exchange couplings. We conclude that La$_{4}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{10}$ appears to be a novel material in which the orbital physics drives the formation of spin-singlet dimers in a quasi 2-dimensional $S$=1 system.
