Structure of the Solar Dust Corona and its Interaction with the other Coronal Components

We developed a new technique for registration of the far solar corona from ground-based observations at distances comparable to those obtained from space coronagraphs. It makes possible visualization of fine details of studied objects invisible by naked eye. Here we demonstrate that streamers of the electron corona sometimes punch the dust corona and that the shape of the dust corona may vary with time. We obtained several experimental evidences that the far coronal streamers (observed directly only from the space or stratosphere) emit only in discrete regions of the visible spectrum like resonance fluorescence of molecules and ions in comets. We found that interaction of the coronal streamers with the dust corona can produce molecules and radicals, which are known to cause the resonance fluorescence in comets.

Measurement of the Flux of Ultra High Energy Cosmic Rays by the Stereo Technique

The High Resolution Fly's Eye experiment has measured the flux of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays using the stereoscopic air fluorescence technique. The HiRes experiment consists of two detectors that observe cosmic ray showers via the fluorescence light they emit. HiRes data can be analyzed in monocular mode, where each detector is treated separately, or in stereoscopic mode where they are considered together. Using the monocular mode the HiRes collaboration measured the cosmic ray spectrum and made the first observation of the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin cutoff. In this paper we present the cosmic ray spectrum measured by the stereoscopic technique. Good agreement is found with the monocular spectrum in all details.

Search for Correlations between HiRes Stereo Events and Active Galactic Nuclei

We have searched for correlations between the pointing directions of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays observed by the High Resolution Fly's Eye experiment and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) visible from its northern hemisphere location. No correlations, other than random correlations, have been found. We report our results using search parameters prescribed by the Pierre Auger collaboration. Using these parameters, the Auger collaboration concludes that a positive correlation exists for sources visible to their southern hemisphere location. We also describe results using two methods for determining the chance probability of correlations: one in which a hypothesis is formed from scanning one half of the data and tested on the second half, and another which involves a scan over the entire data set. The most significant correlation found occurred with a chance probability of 24%.

An upper limit on the electron-neutrino flux from the HiRes detector

Air-fluorescence detectors such as the High Resolution Fly's Eye (HiRes) detector are very sensitive to upward-going, Earth-skimming ultrahigh energy electron-neutrino-induced showers. This is due to the relatively large interaction cross sections of these high-energy neutrinos and to the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect. The LPM effect causes a significant decrease in the cross sections for bremsstrahlung and pair production, allowing charged-current electron-neutrino-induced showers occurring deep in the Earth's crust to be detectable as they exit the Earth into the atmosphere. A search for upward-going neutrino-induced showers in the HiRes-II monocular dataset has yielded a null result. From an LPM calculation of the energy spectrum of charged particles as a function of primary energy and depth for electron-induced showers in rock, we calculate the shape of the resulting profile of these showers in air. We describe a full detector Monte Carlo simulation to determine the detector response to upward-going electron-neutrino-induced cascades and present an upper limit on the flux of electron-neutrinos.

Broadband squeezed light from phase-locked single-mode sub-Poissonian lasers

We consider sub-Poissonian single-mode laser with external synchronization and analyze its applicability to the problems of quantum information. Using Heisenberg-Langevin theory we calculate the quadrature variances of the field emitted by this laser. It is shown that such systems can demonstrate strong quadrature squeezing. Taking into account that the emitted field is temporally multi-mode the application of such sources to multichannel quantum teleportation and dense coding protocols is discussed.

Evidence for a narrow structure at W~1.68 GeV in eta photoproduction on the neutron

New results on quasi-free $η$ photoproduction on the neutron and proton bound in a deuteron target are presented. The $γn \to ηn$ quasi-free cross section reveals a bump-like structure which is not seen in the cross section on the proton. This structure may signal the existence of a relatively narrow ($M\sim 1.68$ GeV, $Γ\leq 30$ MeV) baryon state.

Test of the quantumness of atom-atom correlations in a bosonic gas

It is shown how the quantumness of atom-atom correlations in a trapped bosonic gas can be made observable. Application of continuous feedback control of the center of mass of the atomic cloud is shown to generate oscillations of the spatial extension of the cloud, whose amplitude can be directly used as a characterization of atom-atom correlations. Feedback parameters can be chosen such that the violation of a Schwarz inequality for atom-atom correlations can be tested at noise levels much higher than the standard quantum limit.

Non-Markovian Particle Dynamics in Continuously Controlled Quantum Gases

For a quantum gas, being subject to continuous feedback of a macroscopic observable, the single-particle dynamics is studied. Albeit feedback-induced particle correlations, it is shown that analytic solutions are obtained by formally extending the single-particle Hilbert space by an auxiliary degree of freedom. The particle's motion is then fed by colored noise, which effectively maps quantum-statistical correlations onto the single particle. Thus, the single particle in the continuously controlled gas follows a non-Markovian trajectory in phase-space.

Transverse confinement in stochastic cooling of trapped atoms

Stochastic cooling of trapped atoms is considered for a laser-beam configuration with beam waists equal or smaller than the extent of the atomic cloud. It is shown, that various effects appear due to this transverse confinement, among them heating of transverse kinetic energy. Analytical results of the cooling in dependence on size and location of the laser beam are presented for the case of a non-degenerate vapour.

Quantum Limits of Stochastic Cooling of a Bosonic Gas

The quantum limits of stochastic cooling of trapped atoms are studied. The energy subtraction due to the applied feedback is shown to contain an additional noise term due to atom-number fluctuations in the feedback region. This novel effect is shown to dominate the cooling efficiency near the condensation point. Furthermore, we show first results that indicate that Bose--Einstein condensation could be reached via stochastic cooling.

Topologically protected quantum bits from Josephson junction arrays

All physical implementations of quantum bits (qubits), carrying the information and computation in a putative quantum computer, have to meet the conflicting requirements of environmental decoupling while remaining manipulable through designed external signals. Proposals based on quantum optics naturally emphasize the aspect of optimal isolation, while those following the solid state route exploit the variability and scalability of modern nanoscale fabrication techniques. Recently, various designs using superconducting structures have been successfully tested for quantum coherent operation, however, the ultimate goal of reaching coherent evolution over thousands of elementary operations remains a formidable task. Protecting qubits from decoherence by exploiting topological stability, a qualitatively new proposal due to Kitaev, holds the promise for long decoherence times, but its practical physical implementation has remained unclear so far. Here, we show how strongly correlated systems developing an isolated two-fold degenerate quantum dimer liquid groundstate can be used in the construction of topologically stable qubits and discuss their implementation using Josephson junction arrays.

Next-to-leading virtual photon - Reggeized gluon interaction

We present the results of the calculation of the one-loop correction to the effective vertex for the quark-antiquark pair production in collisions of the virtual photon with the Reggeized gluon. This vertex is supposed then to be used for the calculation of the virtual photon impact factor, which is extremely important, for instance, for the description of the small $x$ deep inelastic scattering in the BFKL approach.

Production of $e^+e^-$ pairs to all orders in $Zα$ for collisions of high-energy muons with heavy nuclei

The $e^+e^-$ pair production in collisions of muon with atoms is considered to all orders in the parameter $Zα$. We obtain energy distribution of $e^+$ and $e^-$ as well as energy loss of muon passing through matter with heavy atoms. The found corrections to the Born contribution do not depend on the details of the target properties except of a simple factor. For the considered example of Pb target the muon energy loss corrections vary from -65 % to -10 % depending on the pair energy.

Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard equations as a quantization of nonstationary Hitchin system

The KZB equations for conformal blocks of the WZNW theory are written on the moduli space of holomorphic principal bundles on the surface. They become the multi-time Schroedinger equation for the nonstationary Hitchin system. From the known form of the equations we learn about the covariance of quantization with respect to changes of the coordinate frame.

Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard equations on Riemann surfaces

Knizhnik-Zamolodchikov-Bernard equations for twisted conformal blocks on compact Riemann surfaces with marked points are written explicitly in a general projective structure in terms of correlation functions in the theory of twisted b-c systems. It is checked that on the moduli space the equations provide a flat connection with the spectral parameter.
