Ab-initio computation of neutron-rich oxygen isotopes

We compute the binding energy of neutron-rich oxygen isotopes and employ the coupled-cluster method and chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order with two different cutoffs. We obtain rather well-converged results in model spaces consisting of up to 21 oscillator shells. For interactions with a momentum cutoff of 500 MeV, we find that 28O is stable with respect to 24O, while calculations with a momentum cutoff of 600 MeV result in a slightly unbound 28O. The theoretical error estimates due to the omission of the three-nucleon forces and the truncation of excitations beyond three-particle-three-hole clusters indicate that the stability of 28O cannot be ruled out from ab-initio calculations, and that three-nucleon forces and continuum effects play the dominant role in deciding this question.

Solution of the center-of-mass problem in nuclear structure calculations

The coupled-cluster wave function factorizes to a very good approximation into a product of an intrinsic wave function and a Gaussian for the center-of-mass coordinate. The width of the Gaussian is in general not identical to the oscillator length of the underlying single-particle basis. The quality of the separation can be verified by a simple procedure.

Shell-Model Monte Carlo Simulations of Pairing in Few-Fermion Systems

We study a trapped system of fermions with an attractive zero-range two-body interaction using the Shell-Model Monte Carlo method. The method provides {\em ab initio} results in the low $N$ limit where mean-field theory is not applicable. The energy and pairing properties are presented as functions of interaction strength, particle number, and temperature. In the interesting region where typical matrix elements of the two-body interaction are comparable to the level spacing of the trap we find large odd-even effects and signatures of shell structure. As a function of temperature, we observe the disappearance of these effects as in a phase transition.

Medium-mass nuclei from chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions

We compute the binding energies, radii, and densities for selected medium-mass nuclei within coupled-cluster theory and employ the "bare" chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction at order N3LO. We find rather well-converged results in model spaces consisting of 15 oscillator shells, and the doubly magic nuclei 40Ca, 48Ca, and the exotic 48Ni are underbound by about 1 MeV per nucleon within the CCSD approximation. The binding-energy difference between the mirror nuclei 48Ca and 48Ni is close to theoretical mass table evaluations. Our computation of the one-body density matrices and the corresponding natural orbitals and occupation numbers provides a first step to a microscopic foundation of the nuclear shell model.

Coupled-cluster theory for three-body Hamiltonians

We derive coupled-cluster equations for three-body Hamiltonians. The equations for the one- and two-body cluster amplitudes are presented in a factorized form that leads to an efficient numerical implementation. We employ low-momentum two- and three-nucleon interactions and calculate the binding energy of He-4. The results show that the main contribution of the three-nucleon interaction stems from its density-dependent zero-, one-, and two-body terms that result from the normal ordering of the Hamiltonian in coupled-cluster theory. The residual three-body terms that remain after normal ordering can be neglected.

Progress and challenges in the theory of nuclei

Nuclear theory today aims for a comprehensive theoretical framework that can describe all nuclei. I discuss recent progress in this pursuit and the associated challenges as we move forward.

Comment on "Ab Initio study of 40-Ca with an importance-truncated no-core shell model"

In a recent Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 092501 (2007)], Roth and Navratil present an importance-truncation scheme for the no-core shell model. The authors claim that their truncation scheme leads to converged results for the ground state of 40-Ca. We believe that this conclusion cannot be drawn from the results presented in the Letter. Furthermore, the claimed convergence is at variance with expectations of many-body theory. In particular, coupled-cluster calculations indicate that a significant fraction of the correlation energy is missing.

Tackling the Fermionic Sign Problem in the Auxiliary-Field Monte Carlo Method

We explore a novel and straightforward solution to the sign problem that has plagued the Auxiliary-field Monte Carlo (AFMC) method applied to many-body systems for more than a decade. We present a solution to the sign problem that has plagued the Auxiliary-field Monte Carlo (AFMC) method for more than a decade and report a breakthrough where excellent agreement between AFMC and exact CI calculations for fully realistic nuclear applications is achieved. This result offers the capability, unmatched by other methods, to achieve exact solutions for large-scale quantum many-body systems.

Benchmark calculations for 3H, 4He, 16O and 40Ca with ab-initio coupled-cluster theory

We present ab-initio calculations for 3H, 4He, 16O, and 40Ca based on two-nucleon low-momentum interactions Vlowk within coupled-cluster theory. For 3H and 4He, our results are within 70 keV and 10 keV of the corresponding Faddeev and Faddeev-Yakubovsky energies. We study in detail the convergence with respect to the size of the model space and the single-particle basis. For the heavier nuclei, we report practically converged binding energies and compare with other approaches.

Parity-Projected Shell Model Monte Carlo Level Densities for fp-shell Nuclei

We calculate parity-dependent level densities for the even-even isotopes 58,62,66 Fe and 58 Ni and the odd-A nuclei 59 Ni and 65 Fe using the Shell Model Monte Carlo method. We perform these calculations in the complete fp-gds shell-model space using a pairing+quadrupole residual interaction. We find that, due to pairing of identical nucleons, the low-energy spectrum is dominated by positive parity states. Although these pairs break at around the same excitation energy in all nuclei, the energy dependence of the ratio of negative-to-positive parity level densities depends strongly on the particular nucleus of interest. We find equilibration of both parities at noticeably lower excitation energies for the odd-A nuclei 59 Ni and 65 Fe than for the neighboring even-even nuclei 58 Ni and 66 Fe.

Complex coupled-cluster approach to an ab-initio description of open quantum systems

We develop ab-initio coupled-cluster theory to describe resonant and weakly bound states along the neutron drip line. We compute the ground states of the helium chain 3-10He within coupled-cluster theory in singles and doubles (CCSD) approximation. We employ a spherical Gamow-Hartree-Fock basis generated from the low-momentum N3LO nucleon-nucleon interaction. This basis treats bound, resonant, and continuum states on equal footing, and is therefore optimal for the description of properties of drip line nuclei where continuum features play an essential role. Within this formalism, we present an ab-initio calculation of energies and decay widths of unstable nuclei starting from realistic interactions.

Correlations and effective interactions in nuclear matter

We performed Self-Consistent Greens Function (SCGF) calculations for symmetric nuclear matter using realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions and effective low-momentum interactions ($V_{low-k}$), which are derived from such realistic NN interactions. We compare the spectral distributions resulting from such calculations. We also introduce a density-dependent effective low-momentum interaction which accounts for the dispersive effects in the single-particle propagator in the medium.

High-spin intruder states in the fp shell nuclei and isoscalar proton-neutron correlations

We perform a systematic shell-model and mean-field study of fully-aligned, high-spin f_{7/2}^{n} seniority isomers and d_{3/2}^{-1} f_{7/2}^{n+1} intruder states in the A~44 nuclei from the lower-fp shell. The shell-model calculations are performed in the full sdfp configuration space allowing 1p-1h cross-shell excitations. The self-consistent mean-field calculations are based on the Hartree-Fock approach with the Skyrme energy density functional that reproduces empirical Landau parameters. While there is a nice agreement between experimental and theoretical relative energies of fully-aligned states in N>Z nuclei, this is no longer the case for the N=Z systems. The remaining deviation from the data is attributed to the isoscalar proton-neutron correlations. It is also demonstrated that the Coulomb corrections at high spins noticeably depend on the choice of the energy density functional.

Shell Model Monte Carlo method in the $pn$-formalism and applications to the Zr and Mo isotopes

We report on the development of a new shell-model Monte Carlo algorithm which uses the proton-neutron formalism. Shell model Monte Carlo methods, within the isospin formulation, have been successfully used in large-scale shell-model calculations. Motivation for this work is to extend the feasibility of these methods to shell-model studies involving non-identical proton and neutron valence spaces. We show the viability of the new approach with some test results. Finally, we use a realistic nucleon-nucleon interaction in the model space described by (1p_1/2,0g_9/2) proton and (1d_5/2,2s_1/2,1d_3/2,0g_7/2,0h_11/2) neutron orbitals above the Sr-88 core to calculate ground-state energies, binding energies, B(E2) strengths, and to study pairing properties of the even-even 90-104 Zr and 92-106 Mo isotope chains.

Coupled-cluster calculations for valence systems around O-16

We study the ground and low-lying excited states of O-15, O-17, N-15, and F-17 using modern two-body nucleon-nucleon interactions and the suitably designed variants of the ab initio equation-of-motion coupled-cluster theory aimed at an accurate description of systems with valence particles and holes. A number of properties of O-15, O-17, N-15, and F-17, including ways the energies of ground and excited states of valence systems around O-16 change as functions of the number of nucleons, are correctly reproduced by the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster calculations. Within a harmonic oscillator basis and large effective model spaces, our results are converged for the chosen two-body Hamiltonians. Thus, all disagreements with experiment are, most likely, due to the degrees of freedom such as three-body interactions not accounted for in our effective two-body Hamiltonians. In particular, the calculated binding energies of O-15/N-15 and O-17/F-17 enable us to rationalize the discrepancy between the experimental and recently published [Phys. Rev. Lett. 94, 212501 (2005)] equation-of-motion coupled-cluster excitation energies for the Jpi=3- state of O-16. The results demonstrate the feasibility of the equation-of-motion coupled-cluster methods to deal with valence systems around closed-shell nuclei and to provide precise results for systems beyond A=16.

Density matrix renormalization group and wave function factorization for nuclei

We employ the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) and the wave function factorization method for the numerical solution of large scale nuclear structure problems. The DMRG exhibits an improved convergence for problems with realistic interactions due to the implementation of the finite algorithm. The wave function factorization of fpg-shell nuclei yields rapidly converging approximations that are at the present frontier for large-scale shell model calculations.

Ab initio coupled-cluster study of 16-O

We report converged results for the ground and excited states and matter density of 16-O using realistic two-body nucleon-nucleon interactions and coupled-cluster methods and formalism developed in quantum chemistry. Most of the binding is obtained with the coupled-cluster singles and doubles approach. Additional binding due to three-body clusters (triples) is minimal. The coupled-cluster method with singles and doubles provides a good description of the matter density, charge radius, charge form factor, and excited states of a 1-particle-1-hole nature, but it cannot describe the first excited 0+ state. Incorporation of triples has no effect on the latter finding.

Gamow-Teller GT+ distributions in nuclei with mass A=90-97

We investigate the Gamow-Teller strength distributions in the electron-capture direction in nuclei having mass A=90-97, assuming a 88Sr core and using a realistic interaction that reasonably reproduces nuclear spectroscopy for a wide range of nuclei in the region as well as experimental data on Gamow-Teller strength distributions. We discuss the systematics of the distributions and their centroids. We also predict the strength distributions for several nuclei involving stable isotopes that should be experimentally accessible for one-particle exchange reactions in the near future.
