Oscillations of dark solitons in trapped Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider a one-dimensional defocusing Gross--Pitaevskii equation with a parabolic potential. Dark solitons oscillate near the center of the potential trap and their amplitude decays due to radiative losses (sound emission). We develop a systematic asymptotic multi-scale expansion method in the limit when the potential trap is flat. The first-order approximation predicts a uniform frequency of oscillations for the dark soliton of arbitrary amplitude. The second-order approximation predicts the nonlinear growth rate of the oscillation amplitude, which results in decay of the dark soliton. The results are compared with the previous publications and numerical computations.

Stabilizing the Discrete Vortex of Topological Charge S=2

We study the instability of the discrete vortex with topological charge S=2 in a prototypical lattice model and observe its mediation through the central lattice site. Motivated by this finding, we analyze the model with the central site being inert. We identify analytically and observe numerically the existence of a range of linearly stable discrete vortices with S=2 in the latter model. The range of stability is comparable to that of the recently observed experimentally S=1 discrete vortex, suggesting the potential for observation of such higher charge discrete vortices.

Dynamics of trapped bright solitons in the presence of localized inhomogeneities

We examine the dynamics of a bright solitary wave in the presence of a repulsive or attractive localized ``impurity'' in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We study the generation and stability of a pair of steady states in the vicinity of the impurity as the impurity strength is varied. These two new steady states, one stable and one unstable, disappear through a saddle-node bifurcation as the strength of the impurity is decreased. The dynamics of the soliton is also examined in all the cases (including cases where the soliton is offset from one of the relevant fixed points). The numerical results are corroborated by theoretical calculations which are in very good agreement with the numerical findings.

Three-Dimensional Nonlinear Lattices: From Oblique Vortices and Octupoles to Discrete Diamonds and Vortex Cubes

We construct a variety of novel localized states with distinct topological structures in the 3D discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation. The states can be created in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in strong optical lattices, and crystals built of microresonators. These new structures, most of which have no counterparts in lower dimensions, range from purely real patterns of dipole, quadrupole and octupole types to vortex solutions, such as "diagonal" and "oblique" vortices, with axes oriented along the respective directions $(1,1,1)$ and $(1,1,0)$. Vortex "cubes" (stacks of two quasi-planar vortices with like or opposite polarities) and "diamonds" (discrete skyrmions formed by two vortices with orthogonal axes) are constructed too. We identify stability regions of these 3D solutions and compare them with their 2D counterparts, if any. An explanation for the stability/instability of most solutions is proposed. The evolution of unstable states is studied as well.

Statics, Dynamics and Manipulations of Bright Matter-Wave Solitons in Optical Lattices

Motivated by recent experimental achievement in the work with Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), we consider bright matter-wave solitons, in the presence of a parabolic magnetic trap and a spatially periodic optical lattice (OL), in the attractive BEC. We examine pinned states of the soliton and their stability by means of perturbation theory. The analytical predictions are found to be in good agreement with numerical simulations. We then explore possibilities to use a time-modulated OL as a means of stopping and trapping a moving soliton, and of transferring an initially stationary soliton to a prescribed position by a moving OL. We also study the emission of radiation from the soliton moving across the combined magnetic trap and OL. We find that the soliton moves freely (without radiation) across a weak lattice, but suffers strong loss for stronger OLs.

Vortices in Bose-Einstein Condensates: Some Recent Developments

In this brief review we summarize a number of recent developments in the study of vortices in Bose-Einstein condensates, a topic of considerable theoretical and experimental interest in the past few years. We examine the generation of vortices by means of phase imprinting, as well as via dynamical instabilities. Their stability is subsequently examined in the presence of purely magnetic trapping, and in the combined presence of magnetic and optical trapping. We then study pairs of vortices and their interactions, illustrating a reduced description in terms of ordinary differential equations for the vortex centers. In the realm of two vortices we also consider the existence of stable dipole clusters for two-component condensates. Last but not least, we discuss mesoscopic patterns formed by vortices, the so-called vortex lattices and analyze some of their intriguing dynamical features. A number of interesting future directions are highlighted.

Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking in Photonic Lattices: Theory and Experiment

We examine an example of spontaneous symmetry breaking in a double-well waveguide with a symmetric potential. The ground state of the system beyond a critical power becomes asymmetric. The effect is illustrated numerically, and quantitatively analyzed via a Galerkin truncation that clearly shows the bifurcation from a symmetric to an asymmetric steady state. This phenomenon is also demonstrated experimentally when a probe beam is launched appropriately into an optically induced photonic lattice in a photorefractive material.

Nonlinear Schrödinger lattices I: Stability of discrete solitons

We consider the discrete solitons bifurcating from the anti-continuum limit of the discrete nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) lattice. The discrete soliton in the anti-continuum limit represents an arbitrary finite superposition of {\em in-phase} or {\em anti-phase} excited nodes, separated by an arbitrary sequence of empty nodes. By using stability analysis, we prove that the discrete solitons are all unstable near the anti-continuum limit, except for the solitons, which consist of alternating anti-phase excited nodes. We classify analytically and confirm numerically the number of unstable eigenvalues associated with each family of the discrete solitons.

Nonlinear Schrödinger lattices II: Persistence and Stability of Discrete Vortices

We study discrete vortices in the anti-continuum limit of the discrete two-dimensional nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger (NLS) equations. The discrete vortices in the anti-continuum limit represent a finite set of excited nodes on a closed discrete contour with a non-zero topological charge. Using the Lyapunov-Schmidt reductions, we find sufficient conditions for continuation and termination of the discrete vortices for a small coupling constant in the discrete NLS lattice. An example of a closed discrete contour is considered that includes the vortex cell (also known as the off-site vortex). We classify the symmetric and asymmetric discrete vortices that bifurcate from the anti-continuum limit. We predict analytically and confirm numerically the number of unstable eigenvalues associated with various families of such discrete vortices.

Static and rotating domain-wall crosses in Bose-Einstein condensates

For a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a two-dimensional (2D) trap, we introduce cross patterns, which are generated by intersection of two domain walls (DWs) separating immiscible species, with opposite signs of the wave functions in each pair of sectors filled by the same species. The cross pattern remains stable up to the zero value of the immiscibility parameter $|Δ|$, while simpler rectilinear (quasi-1D) DWs exist only for values of $|Δ|$ essentially exceeding those in BEC mixtures (two spin states of the same isotope) currently available to the experiment. Both symmetric and asymmetric cross configurations are investigated, with equal or different numbers $N_{1,2}$ of atoms in the two species. In rotating traps, ``propellers'' (stable revolving crosses) are found too. A full stability region for of the crosses and propellers in the system's parameter space is identified, unstable crosses evolving into arrays of vortex-antivortex pairs. Stable rotating rectilinear DWs are found too, at larger vlues of $|Δ|$. All the patterns produced by the intersection of three or more DWs are unstable, rearranging themselves into ones with two DWs. Optical propellers are also predicted in a twisted nonlinear photonic-crystal fiber carrying two different wavelengths or circular polarizations, which can be used for applications to switching and routing.

Linearly Coupled Bose-Einstein Condensates: From Rabi Oscillations and Quasi-Periodic Solutions to Oscillating Domain Walls and Spiral Waves

In this paper, an exact unitary transformation is examined that allows for the construction of solutions of coupled nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equations with additional linear field coupling, from solutions of the problem where this linear coupling is absent. The most general case where the transformation is applicable is identified. We then focus on the most important special case, namely the well-known Manakov system, which is known to be relevant for applications in Bose-Einstein condensates consisting of different hyperfine states of $^{87}$Rb. In essence, the transformation constitutes a distributed, nonlinear as well as multi-component generalization of the Rabi oscillations between two-level atomic systems. It is used here to derive a host of periodic and quasi-periodic solutions including temporally oscillating domain walls and spiral waves.

Analogies between dark solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates and optical systems

Dark solitons have been observed in optical systems (optical fibres, dielectric guides and bulk media), and, more recently, in harmonically confined atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. This paper presents an overview of some of the common features and analogies experienced by these two intrinsically nonlinear systems, with emphasis on the stability of dark solitons in such systems and their decay via emission of radiation. The closely related issue of vortex dynamics in such systems is also briefly discussed.

Vortices in a Bose-Einstein condensate confined by an optical lattice

We investigate the dynamics of vortices in repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of an optical lattice (OL) and a parabolic magnetic trap. The dynamics is sensitive to the phase of the OL potential relative to the magnetic trap, and depends less on the OL strength. For the cosinusoidal OL potential, a local minimum is generated at the trap's center, creating a stable equilibrium for the vortex, while in the case of the sinusoidal potential, the vortex is expelled from the center, demonstrating spiral motion. Cases where the vortex is created far from the trap's center are also studied, revealing slow outward-spiraling drift. Numerical results are explained in an analytical form by means of a variational approximation. Finally, motivated by a discrete model (which is tantamount to the case of the strong OL lattice), we present a novel type of vortex consisting of two pairs of anti-phase solitons.

Three-Dimensional Solitary Waves and Vortices in a Discrete Nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger Lattice

In a benchmark dynamical-lattice model in three dimensions, the discrete nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger equation, we find discrete vortex solitons with various values of the topological charge $S$. Stability regions for the vortices with $S=0,1,3$ are investigated. The S=2 vortex is unstable, spontaneously rearranging into a stable one with S=3. In a two-component extension of the model, we find a novel class of stable structures, consisting of vortices in the different components, perpendicularly oriented to each other. Self-localized states of the proposed types can be observed experimentally in Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in optical lattices, and in photonic crystals built of microresonators.

Domain Walls of Single-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates in External Potentials

We demonstrate the possibility of creating domain walls described by a single component Gross-Pitaevskii equation with attractive interaction, in the presence of an optical-lattice potential. While it is found that the extended domain wall is unstable, we show that the external magnetic trap can stabilize it. Stable solutions include twisted domain walls, as well as asymmetric solitons. The results also apply to spatial solitons in planar waveguides with transverse modulation of the refractive index.

Pattern Forming Dynamical Instabilities of Bose-Einstein Condensates: A Short Review

In this short topical review, we revisit a number of works on the pattern-forming dynamical instabilities of Bose-Einstein condensates in one- and two-dimensional settings. In particular, we illustrate the trapping conditions that allow the reduction of the three-dimensional, mean field description of the condensates (through the Gross-Pitaevskii equation) to such lower dimensional settings, as well as to lattice settings. We then go on to study the modulational instability in one dimension and the snaking/transverse instability in two dimensions as typical examples of long-wavelength perturbations that can destabilize the condensates and lead to the formation of patterns of coherent structures in them. Trains of solitons in one-dimension and vortex arrays in two-dimensions are prototypical examples of the resulting nonlinear waveforms, upon which we briefly touch at the end of this review.

Avoiding Infrared Catastrophes in Trapped Bose-Einstein Condensates

This paper is concerned with the long wavelength instabilities (infrared catastrophes) occurring in Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). We examine the modulational instability in ``cigar-shaped'' (1D) attractive BECs and the transverse instability of dark solitons in ``pancake'' (2D) repulsive BECs. We suggest mechanisms, and give explicit estimates, on how to ``engineer'' the trapping conditions of the condensate to avoid such instabilities: the main result being that a tight enough trapping potential suppresses the instabilities present in the homogeneous limit. We compare the obtained estimates with numerical results and we highlight the relevant regimes of dynamical behavior.
