Stabilization of ring dark solitons in Bose-Einstein condensates

Earlier work has shown that ring dark solitons in two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate are generically unstable. In this work, we propose a way of stabilizing the ring dark soliton via a radial Gaussian external potential. We investigate the existence and stability of the ring dark soliton upon variations of the chemical potential and also of the strength of the radial potential. Numerical results show that the ring dark soliton can be stabilized in a suitable interval of external potential strengths and chemical potentials. We also explore different proposed particle pictures considering the ring as a moving particle and find, where appropriate, results in very good qualitative and also reasonable quantitative agreement with the numerical findings.

Bose-Einstein condensation: Twenty years after

The aim of this introductory article is two-fold. First, we aim to offer a general introduction to the theme of Bose-Einstein condensates, and briefly discuss the evolution of a number of relevant research directions during the last two decades. Second, we introduce and present the articles that appear in this Special Volume of Romanian Reports in Physics celebrating the conclusion of the second decade since the experimental creation of Bose-Einstein condensation in ultracold gases of alkali-metal atoms.

Positive and negative mass solitons in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We present a unified description of different types of matter-wave solitons that can emerge in quasi one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled (SOC) Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). This description relies on the reduction of the original two-component Gross-Pitaevskii SOC-BEC model to a single nonlinear Schrödinger equation, via a multiscale expansion method. This way, we find approximate bright and dark soliton solutions, for attractive and repulsive interatomic interactions respectively, for different regimes of the SOC interactions. Beyond this, our approach also reveals "negative mass" regimes, where corresponding "negative mass" bright or dark solitons can exist for repulsive or attractive interactions, respectively. Such a unique opportunity stems from the structure of the excitation spectrum of the SOC-BEC. Numerical results are found to be in excellent agreement with our analytical predictions.

Scattering of matter-waves in spatially inhomogeneous environments

We study scattering of quasi one-dimensional matter-waves at an interface of two spatial domains, one with repulsive and one with attractive interatomic interactions. It is shown that the incidence of a Gaussian wavepacket from the repulsive to the attractive region gives rise to generation of a soliton train. More specifically, the number of emergent solitons can be controlled e.g. by the variation of the amplitude or the width of the incoming wavepacket. Furthermore, we study the reflectivity of a soliton incident from the attractive region to the repulsive one. We find the reflection coefficient numerically and employ analytical methods, that treat the soliton as a particle (for moderate and large amplitudes) or a quasi-linear wavepacket (for small amplitudes), to determine the critical soliton momentum - as function of the soliton amplitude - for which total reflection is observed.

Dark-bright solitons in coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations with unequal dispersion coefficients

We study a two-component nonlinear Schr{ö}dinger system with equal, repulsive cubic interactions and different dispersion coefficients in the two components. We consider states that have a dark solitary wave in one component. Treating it as a frozen one, we explore the possibility of the formation of bright-solitonic structures in the other component. We identify bifurcation points at which such states emerge in the bright component in the linear limit and explore their continuation into the nonlinear regime. An additional analytically tractable limit is found to be that of vanishing dispersion of the bright component. We numerically identify regimes of potential stability, not only of the single-peak ground state (the dark-bright soliton), but also of excited states with one or more zero crossings in the bright component. When the states are identified as unstable, direct numerical simulations are used to investigate the outcome of the instability development. Although our principal focus is on the homogeneous setting, we also briefly touch upon the counterintuitive impact of the potential presence of a parabolic trap on the states of interest.

Acoustic solitons in waveguides with Helmholtz resonators: transmission line approach

We report experimental results and study theoretically soliton formation and propagation in an airfilled acoustic waveguide side loaded with Helmholtz resonators. Our theoretical approach relies on a transmission-line description of this setting, which leads to a nonlinear dynamical lattice model. The latter is treated analytically, by means of dynamical systems and multiscale expansion techniques, and leads to various soliton solutions for the pressure. These include Boussinesq-like and Korteweg-de Vries pulse-shaped solitons, as well as nonlinear Schröodinger envelope solitons. The analytical predictions are in excellent agreement with direct numerical simulations and in qualitative agreement with the experimental observations.

Solitons and Vortices in Two-dimensional Discrete Nonlinear Schrodinger Systems with Spatially Modulated Nonlinearity

We consider a two-dimensional (2D) generalization of a recently proposed model [Phys. Rev. E 88, 032905 (2013)], which gives rise to bright discrete solitons supported by the defocusing nonlinearity whose local strength grows from the center to the periphery. We explore the 2D model starting from the anti-continuum (AC) limit of vanishing coupling. In this limit, we can construct a wide variety of solutions including not only single-site excitations, but also dipole and quadrupole ones. Additionally, two separate families of solutions are explored: the usual "extended" unstaggered bright solitons, in which all sites are excited in the AC limit, with the same sign across the lattice (they represent the most robust states supported by the lattice, their 1D counterparts being what was considered as 1D bright solitons in the above-mentioned work), and the vortex cross, which is specific to the 2D setting. For all the existing states, we explore their stability (analytically, whenever possible). Typical scenarios of instability development are exhibited through direct simulations.

Rogue Waves In Nonlinear Schrödinger Models with Variable Coefficients: Application to Bose-Einstein Condensates

We explore the form of rogue wave solutions in a select set of case examples of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with variable coefficients. We focus on systems with constant dispersion, and present three different models that describe atomic Bose-Einstein condensates in different experimentally relevant settings. For these models, we identify exact rogue wave solutions. Our analytical findings are corroborated by direct numerical integration of the original equations, performed by two different schemes. Very good agreement between numerical results and analytical predictions for the emergence of the rogue waves is identified. Additionally, the nontrivial fate of small numerically induced perturbations to the exact rogue wave solutions is also discussed.

Vector rogue waves and dark-bright boomeronic solitons in autonomous and non-autonomous settings

In this work, we consider the dynamics of vector rogue waves and dark-bright solitons in two-component nonlinear Schrödinger equations with various physically motivated time-dependent nonlinearity coefficients, as well as spatio-temporally dependent potentials. A similarity transformation is utilized to convert the system into the integrable Manakov system and subsequently the vector rogue and dark-bright boomeron-like soliton solutions of the latter are converted back into ones of the original non-autonomous model. Using direct numerical simulations we find that, in most cases, the rogue wave formation is rapidly followed by a modulational instability that leads to the emergence of an expanding soliton train. Scenarios different than this generic phenomenology are also reported.

Traveling waves of the regularized short pulse equation

In the present work, we revisit the so-called regularized short pulse equation (RSPE) and, in particular, explore the traveling wave solutions of this model. We theoretically analyze and numerically evolve two sets of such solutions. First, using a fixed point iteration scheme, we numerically integrate the equation to find solitary waves. It is found that these solutions are well approximated by a truncated series of hyperbolic secants. The dependence of the soliton's parameters (height, width, etc) to the parameters of the equation is also investigated. Second, by developing a multiple scale reduction of the RSPE to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we are able to construct (both standing and traveling) envelope wave breather type solutions of the former, based on the solitary wave structures of the latter. Both the regular and the breathing traveling wave solutions identified are found to be robust and should thus be amenable to observations in the form of few optical cycle pulses.

Beating dark-dark solitons and Zitterbewegung in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We present families of beating dark-dark solitons in spin-orbit (SO) coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. These families consist of solitons residing simultaneously in the two bands of the energy spectrum. The soliton components are characterized by two different spatial and temporal scales, which are identified by a multiscale expansion method. The solitons are "beating" ones, as they perform density oscillations with a characteristic frequency, relevant to Zitterbewegung (ZB). We find that spin oscillations may occur, depending on the parity of each soliton branch, which consequently lead to ZB oscillations of the beating dark solitons. Analytical results are corroborated by numerical simulations, illustrating the robustness of the solitons.

Dark-bright Solitons and their Lattices in Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates

In the present contribution, we explore a host of different stationary states, namely dark-bright solitons and their lattices, that arise in the context of multi-component atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. The latter, are modeled by systems of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations with general interaction (nonlinearity) coefficients $g_{ij}$. It is found that in some particular parameter ranges such solutions can be obtained in analytical form, however, numerically they are computed as existing in a far wider parametric range. Many features of the solutions under study, such as their analytical form without the trap or the stability/dynamical properties of one dark-bright soliton even in the presence of the trap are obtained analytically and corroborated numerically. Additional features, such as the stability of soliton lattice homogeneous states or their existence/stability in the presence of the trap, are examined numerically.

Non-autonomous bright-dark solitons and Rabi oscillations in multi-component Bose-Einstein condensates

We study the dynamics of non-autonomous bright-dark matter-wave solitons in two- and three- component Bose-Einstein condensates. Our setting includes a time-dependent parabolic potential and scattering length, as well as Rabi coupling of the separate hyperfine states. By means of a similarity transformation, we transform the non-autonomous coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations into the completely integrable Manakov model with defocusing nonlinearity, and construct the explicit form of the non-autonomous soliton solutions. The propagation characteristics for the one-soliton state, and collision scenarios for multiple soliton states are discussed in detail for two types of time-dependent nonlinearities: a kink-like one and a periodically modulated one, with appropriate time-dependence of the trapping potential. We find that in the two-component condensates the nature of soliton propagation is determined predominantly by the nature of the nonlinearity, as well as the temporal modulation of the harmonic potential; switching in this setting is essentially due to Rabi coupling. We also perform direct numerical simulation of the non-autonomous two-component coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations to corroborate our analytical predictions. More interestingly, in the case of the three-component condensates, we find that the solitons can lead to collision-induced energy switching (energy-sharing collision), that can be profitably used to control Rabi switching or vice-versa. An interesting possibility of reversal of the nature of the constituent soliton, i.e., bright (dark) into dark (bright) due to Rabi coupling is demonstrated in the three-component setting.

Nonlinear PT-symmetric models bearing exact solutions

We study the nonlinear Schr$\ddot{o}$dinger equation with a PT-symmetric potential. Using a hydrodynamic formulation and connecting the phase gradient to the field amplitude, allows for a reduction of the model to a Duffing or a generalized Duffing equation. This way, we can obtain exact soliton solutions existing in the presence of suitable PT-symmetric potentials, and study their stability and dynamics. We report interesting new features, including oscillatory instabilities of solitons and (nonlinear) PT-symmetry breaking transitions, for focusing and defocusing nonlinearities.

Exploring Rigidly Rotating Vortex Configurations and their Bifurcations in Atomic Bose-Einstein Condensates

In the present work, we consider the problem of a system of few vortices $N \leq 5$ as it emerges from its experimental realization in the field of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Starting from the corresponding equations of motion, we use a two-pronged approach in order to reveal the configuration space of the system's preferred dynamical states. On the one hand, we use a Monte-Carlo method parametrizing the vortex "particles" by means of hyperspherical coordinates and identifying the minimal energy ground states thereof for $N=2, ..., 5$ and different vortex particle angular momenta. We then complement this picture with a dynamical systems analysis of the possible rigidly rotating states. The latter reveals all the supercritical and subcritical pitchfork, as well as saddle-center bifurcations that arise exposing the full wealth of the problem even at such low dimensional cases. By corroborating the results of the two methods, it becomes fairly transparent which branch the Monte-Carlo approach selects for different values of the angular momentum which is used as a bifurcation parameter.

From Nodeless Clouds and Vortices to Gray Rings and Symmetry-Broken States in Two-Dimensional Polariton Condensates

We consider the existence, stability and dynamics of the nodeless state and fundamental nonlinear excitations, such as vortices, for a quasi-two-dimensional polariton condensate in the presence of pumping and nonlinear damping. We find a series of interesting features that can be directly contrastedto the case of the typically energy-conserving ultracold alkali-atom Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). For sizeable parameter ranges, in line with earlier findings, the nodeless state becomes unstable towards the formation of {\em stable} nonlinear single or multi-vortex excitations. The potential instability of the single vortex is also examined and is found to possess similar characteristics to those of the nodeless cloud. We also report that, contrary to what is known, e.g., for the atomic BEC case, {\it stable} stationary gray rings (that can be thought of as radial forms of a Nozaki-Bekki hole) can be found for polariton condensates in suitable parametric regimes. In other regimes, however, these may also suffer symmetry breaking instabilities. The dynamical, pattern-forming implications of the above instabilities are explored through direct numerical simulations and, in turn, give rise to waveforms with triangular or quadrupolar symmetry.

PT-symmetry Management in Oligomer Systems

We study the effects of management of the PT-symmetric part of the potential within the setting of Schrödinger dimer and trimer oligomer systems. This is done by rapidly modulating in time the gain/loss profile. This gives rise to a number of interesting properties of the system, which are explored at the level of an averaged equation approach. Remarkably, this rapid modulation provides for a controllable expansion of the region of exact PT-symmetry, depending on the strength and frequency of the imposed modulation. The resulting averaged models are analyzed theoretically and their exact stationary solutions are translated into time-periodic solutions through the averaging reduction. These are, in turn, compared with the exact periodic solutions of the full non-autonomous PT-symmetry managed problem and very good agreement is found between the two.

Matter-wave dark solitons and their excitation spectra in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates

We present three types of dark solitons in quasi-one-dimensional spin-orbit coupled repulsive Bose-Einstein condensates. Among these families, two are always stable, while the third one is only stable sufficiently close to the linear regime. The solitons' excitation spectra reveal the potential existence of a second anomalous mode. While the first such mode describes the soliton oscillatory motion in a parabolic trap, the second, when present, reflects the double well structure of the underlying single-particle spectrum. This novel mode results in moving density stripes in the vicinity of the soliton core, or in an out-of-phase oscillation of the constituent components, with little effect on the nearly stationary striped total density of the composite soliton.
