Dark solitons in cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates in double-well potentials

We study the statics and dynamics of dark solitons in a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a double-well potential. Using a mean-field model with a non-cubic nonlinearity, appropriate to describe the dimensionality crossover regime from one to three dimensional, we obtain branches of solutions in the form of single- and multiple-dark soliton states, and study their bifurcations and stability. It is demonstrated that there exist dark soliton states which do not have a linear counterpart and we highlight the role of anomalous modes in the excitation spectra. Particularly, we show that anomalous mode eigenfrequencies are closely connected to the characteristic soliton frequencies as found from the solitons' equations of motion, and how anomalous modes are related to the emergence of instabilities. We also analyze in detail the role of the height of the barrier in the double well setting, which may lead to instabilities or decouple multiple dark soliton states.

Dark solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates: from theory to experiments

This review paper presents an overview of the theoretical and experimental progress on the study of matter-wave dark solitons in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. Upon introducing the general framework, we discuss the statics and dynamics of single and multiple matter-wave dark solitons in the quasi one-dimensional setting, in higher-dimensional settings, as well as in the dimensionality crossover regime. Special attention is paid to the connection between theoretical results, obtained by various analytical approaches, and relevant experimental observations.

Stability and dynamics of matter-wave vortices in the presence of collisional inhomogeneities and dissipative perturbations

In this work, the spectral properties of a singly-charged vortex in a In this work, the spectral properties of a singly-charged vortex in a Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a highly anisotropic (disk-shaped) harmonic trap are investigated. Special emphasis is given on the analysis of the so-called anomalous (negative energy) mode of the Bogoliubov spectrum. We use analytical and numerical techniques to illustrate the connection of the anomalous mode to the precession dynamics of the vortex in the trap. Effects due to inhomogeneous interatomic interactions and dissipative perturbations motivated by finite temperature considerations are explored. We find that both of these effects may give rise to oscillatory instabilities of the vortex, which are suitably diagnosed through the perturbation-induced evolution of the anomalous mode, and being monitored by direct numerical simulations.

Short pulse equations and localized structures in frequency band gaps of nonlinear metamaterials

We consider short pulse propagation in nonlinear metamaterials characterized by a weak Kerr-type nonlinearity in their dielectric response. In the frequency "band gaps" (where linear electromagnetic waves are evanescent) with linear effective permittivity ε<0 and permeability μ>0, we derive two short-pulse equations (SPEs) for the high- and low-frequency band gaps. The structure of the solutions of the SPEs is also briefly discussed, and connections with the soliton solutions of the nonlinear Schrodinger equation are presented.

Existence and stability of multisite breathers in honeycomb and hexagonal lattices

We study the existence and stability of multisite discrete breathers in two prototypical non-square Klein-Gordon lattices, namely a honeycomb and a hexagonal one. In the honeycomb case we consider six-site configurations and find that for soft potential and positive coupling the out-of-phase breather configuration and the charge-two vortex breather are linearly stable, while the in-phase and charge-one vortex states are unstable. In the hexagonal lattice, we first consider three-site configurations. In the case of soft potential and positive coupling, the in-phase configuration is unstable and the charge-one vortex is linearly stable. The out-of-phase configuration here is found to always be linearly unstable. We then turn to six-site configurations in the hexagonal lattice. The stability results in this case are the same as in the six-site configurations in the honeycomb lattice. For all configurations in both lattices, the stability results are reversed in the setting of either hard potential or negative coupling. The study is complemented by numerical simulations which are in very good agreement with the theoretical predictions. Since neither the form of the on-site potential nor the sign of the coupling parameter involved have been prescribed, this description can accommodate inverse-dispersive systems (e.g., supporting backward waves) such as transverse dust-lattice oscillations in dusty plasma (Debye) crystals or analogous modes in molecular chains.

Matter-wave dark solitons: stochastic vs. analytical results

The dynamics of dark matter-wave solitons in elongated atomic condensates are discussed at finite temperatures. Simulations with the stochastic Gross-Pitaevskii equation reveal a noticeable, experimentally observable spread in individual soliton trajectories, attributed to inherent fluctuations in both phase and density of the underlying medium. Averaging over a number of such trajectories (as done in experiments) washes out such background fluctuations, revealing a well-defined temperature-dependent temporal growth in the oscillation amplitude. The average soliton dynamics is well captured by the simpler dissipative Gross-Pitaevskii equation, both numerically and via an analytically-derived equation for the soliton center based on perturbation theory for dark solitons.

Multiple atomic dark solitons in cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates

We consider the stability and dynamics of multiple dark solitons in cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Our study is motivated by the fact that multiple matter-wave dark solitons may naturally form in such settings as per our recent work [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 130401 (2008)]. First, we study the dark soliton interactions and show that the dynamics of well-separated solitons (i.e., ones that undergo a collision with relatively low velocities) can be analyzed by means of particle-like equations of motion. The latter take into regard the repulsion between solitons (via an effective repulsive potential) and the confinement and dimensionality of the system (via an effective parabolic trap for each soliton). Next, based on the fact that stationary, well-separated dark multi-soliton states emerge as a nonlinear continuation of the appropriate excited eigensates of the quantum harmonic oscillator, we use a Bogoliubov-de Gennes analysis to systematically study the stability of such structures. We find that for a sufficiently large number of atoms, multiple soliton states may be dynamically stable, while for a small number of atoms, we predict a dynamical instability emerging from resonance effects between the eigenfrequencies of the soliton modes and the intrinsic excitation frequencies of the condensate. Finally we present experimental realizations of multi-soliton states including a three-soliton state consisting of two solitons oscillating around a stationary one.

Soliton Dynamics in Linearly Coupled Discrete Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations

We study soliton dynamics in a system of two linearly coupled discrete nonlinear Schrödinger equations, which describe the dynamics of a two-component Bose gas, coupled by an electromagnetic field, and confined in a strong optical lattice. When the nonlinear coupling strengths are equal, we use a unitary transformation to remove the linear coupling terms, and show that the existing soliton solutions oscillate from one species to the other. When the nonlinear coupling strengths are different, the soliton dynamics is numerically investigated and the findings are compared to the results of an effective two-mode model. The case of two linearly coupled Ablowitz-Ladik equations is also investigated.

Solitons in quasi one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates with competing dipolar and local interactions

We study families of one-dimensional matter-wave bright solitons supported by the competition of contact and dipole-dipole (DD) interactions of opposite signs. Soliton families are found, and their stability is investigated in the free space, and in the presence of an optical lattice (OL). Free-space solitons may exist with an arbitrarily weak local attraction if the strength of the DD repulsion is fixed. In the case of the DD attraction, solitons do not exist beyond a maximum value of the local-repulsion strength. In the system which includes the OL, a stability region for \textit{subfundamental solitons} (SFSs) is found in the second finite bandgap. For the existence of gap solitons (GSs) under the attractive DD interaction, the contact repulsion must be strong enough. In the opposite case of the DD repulsion, GSs exist if the contact attraction is not too strong. Collisions between solitons in the free space are studied too. In the case of the local attraction, they merge or pass through each other at small and large velocities, respectively. In the presence of the local repulsion, slowly moving solitons bounce from each other.

A two-dimensional paradigm for symmetry breaking: the nonlinear Schrodinger equation with a four-well potential

We study the existence and stability of localized states in the two-dimensional (2D) nonlinear Schrodinger (NLS)/Gross-Pitaevskii equation with a symmetric four-well potential. Using a fourmode approximation, we are able to trace the parametric evolution of the trapped stationary modes, starting from the corresponding linear limits, and thus derive the complete bifurcation diagram for the families of these stationary modes. The predictions based on the four-mode decomposition are found to be in good agreement with the numerical results obtained from the NLS equation. Actually, the stability properties coincide with those suggested by the corresponding discrete model in the large-amplitude limit. The dynamics of the unstable modes is explored by means of direct simulations. Finally, while we present the full analysis for the case of the focusing nonlinearity, the bifurcation diagram for the defocusing case is briefly considered too.

Higher-order effects and ultra-short solitons in left-handed metamaterials

Starting from Maxwell's equations, we use the reductive perturbation method to derive a second-order and a third-order nonlinear Schroedinger equation, describing ultra-short solitons in nonlinear left-handed metamaterials. We find necessary conditions and derive exact bright and dark soliton solutions of these equations for the electric and magnetic field envelopes.

Discrete solitons and vortices in hexagonal and honeycomb lattices: Existence, stability, and dynamics

We consider a prototypical dynamical lattice model, namely, the discrete nonlinear Schroedinger equation on nonsquare lattice geometries. We present a systematic classification of the solutions that arise in principal six-lattice-site and three-lattice-site contours in the form of both discrete multipole solitons and discrete vortices. Additionally to identifying the possible states, we analytically track their linear stability both qualitatively and quantitatively. We find that among the six-site configurations, the hexapole of alternating phases, as well as the vortex of topological charge S=2 have intervals of stability; among three-site states, only the vortex of topological charge S=1 may be stable in the case of focusing nonlinearity. These conclusions are confirmed both for hexagonal and for honeycomb lattices by means of detailed numerical bifurcation analysis of the stationary states from the anticontinuum limit, and by direct simulations to monitor the dynamical instabilities, when the latter arise. The dynamics reveal a wealth of nonlinear behavior resulting not only in single-site solitary wave forms, but also in robust multisite breathing structures.

Spinor Bose-Einstein condensates in double well potentials

We consider the statics and dynamics of F = 1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) confined in double well potentials. We use a two-mode Galerkin-type quasi-analytical approximation to describe the stationary states of the system. This way, we are able to obtain not only earlier results based on the single mode approximation (SMA) frequently used in studies of spinor BECs, but also additional modes that involve either two or all three spinor components of the F = 1 spinor BEC. The results based on this Galerkin-type decomposition are in good agreement with the analysis of the full system. We subsequently analyze the stability of these multi-component states, as well as their dynamics when we find them to be unstable. The instabilities of the symmetric or anti-symmetric states exhibit symmetry-breaking and recurrent asymmetric patterns. Our results yield qualitatively similar bifurcation diagrams both for polar (such as Na23) and ferromagnetic (such as Rb87) spinor BECs.

Matter-Wave Solitons in the Presence of Collisional Inhomogeneities: Perturbation theory and the impact of derivative terms

We study the dynamics of bright and dark matter-wave solitons in the presence of a spatially varying nonlinearity. When the spatial variation does not involve zero crossings, a transformation is used to bring the problem to a standard nonlinear Schrodinger form, but with two additional terms: an effective potential one and a non-potential term. We illustrate how to apply perturbation theory of dark and bright solitons to the transformed equations. We develop the general case, but primarily focus on the non-standard special case whereby the potential term vanishes, for an inverse square spatial dependence of the nonlinearity. In both cases of repulsive and attractive interactions, appropriate versions of the soliton perturbation theory are shown to accurately describe the soliton dynamics.

Wave patterns generated by a supersonic moving body in a binary Bose-Einstein condensate

Generation of wave structures by a two-dimensional object (laser beam) moving in a two-dimensional two-component Bose-Einstein condensate with a velocity greater than both sound velocities of the mixture is studied by means of analytical methods and systematic simulations of the coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. The wave pattern features three regions separated by two Mach cones. Two branches of linear patterns similar to the so-called "ship waves" are located outside the corresponding Mach cones, and oblique dark solitons are found inside the wider cone. An analytical theory is developed for the linear patterns. A particular dark-soliton solution is also obtained, its stability is investigated, and two unstable modes of transverse perturbations are identified. It is shown that, for a sufficiently large flow velocity, this instability has a convective character in the reference frame attached to the moving body, which makes the dark soliton effectively stable. The analytical findings are corroborated by numerical simulations.

Spinor Bose-Einstein condensate flow past an obstacle

We study the flow of a spinor (F=1) Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of an obstacle. We consider the cases of ferromagnetic and polar spin-dependent interactions and find that the system demonstrates two speeds of sound that are identified analytically. Numerical simulations reveal the nucleation of macroscopic nonlinear structures, such as dark solitons and vortex-antivortex pairs, as well as vortex rings in one- and higher-dimensional settings respectively, when a localized defect (e.g., a blue-detuned laser beam) is dragged through the spinor condensate at a speed larger than the second critical speed.

Collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensates in double-well potentials

In this work, we consider quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), with spatially varying collisional interactions, trapped in double well potentials. In particular, we study a setup in which such a 'collisionally inhomogeneous' BEC has the same (attractive-attractive or repulsive-repulsive) or different (attractive-repulsive) type of interparticle interactions. Our analysis is based on the continuation of the symmetric ground state and anti-symmetric first excited state of the noninteracting (linear) limit into their nonlinear counterparts. The collisional inhomogeneity produces a saddle-node bifurcation scenario between two additional solution branches; as the inhomogeneity becomes stronger, the turning point of the saddle-node tends to infinity and eventually only the two original branches remain present, which is completely different from the standard double-well phenomenology. Finally, one of these branches changes its monotonicity as a function of the chemical potential, a feature especially prominent, when the sign of the nonlinearity changes between the two wells. Our theoretical predictions, are in excellent agreement with the numerical results.

Surface Solitons in Three Dimensions

We study localized modes on the surface of a three-dimensional dynamical lattice. The stability of these structures on the surface is investigated and compared to that in the bulk of the lattice. Typically, the surface makes the stability region larger, an extreme example of that being the three-site "horseshoe"-shaped structure, which is always unstable in the bulk, while at the surface it is stable near the anti-continuum limit. We also examine effects of the surface on lattice vortices. For the vortex placed parallel to the surface this increased stability region feature is also observed, while the vortex cannot exist in a state normal to the surface. More sophisticated localized dynamical structures, such as five-site horseshoes and pyramids, are also considered.
