Specific heat of Gd$^{3+}$ and Eu$^{2+}$-based magnetic compounds

We have studied theoretically the specific heat of a large number of non-frustrated magnetic structures described by the Heisenberg model for systems with total angular momentum $J=7/2$, corresponding to the 4f$^7$ configuration of Gd$^{+3}$ and Eu$^{+2}$. For a given critical temperature (determined by the magnitude of the exchange interactions), we find that, to a high degree of accuracy, the specific heat is governed by two primary parameters: the effective number of neighbors $z$, which dictates the extent of spatial and quantum fluctuations, and the axial anisotropy $K$. The universality of $z$ (its ability to describe specific heat across diverse lattices) holds robustly for systems where exchange interactions do not strongly increase with distance and in the absence of frustration. Otherwise, deviations from universality emerge. Using these two parameters we fit the specific heat of four Gd compounds and two Eu compounds, achieving a remarkable agreement. The present approach enables the extraction of magnetic interaction parameters not accessible through mean-field theory, offering a powerful tool for interpreting specific heat data in 4f$^7$ systems.

Unveiling Exotic Magnetic Phases in Fibonacci Quasicrystalline Stacking of Ferromagnetic Layers through Machine Learning

In this study, we conduct a comprehensive theoretical analysis of a Fibonacci quasicrystalline stacking of ferromagnetic layers, potentially realizable using van der Waals magnetic materials. We construct a model of this magnetic heterostructure, which includes up to second neighbor interlayer magnetic interactions, that displays a complex relationship between geometric frustration and magnetic order in this quasicrystalline system. To navigate the parameter space and identify distinct magnetic phases, we employ a machine learning approach, which proves to be a powerful tool in revealing the complex magnetic behavior of this system. We offer a thorough description of the magnetic phase diagram as a function of the model parameters. Notably, we discover among other collinear and non-collinear phases, a unique ferromagnetic alternating helical phase. In this non-collinear quasiperiodic ferromagnetic configuration the magnetization decreases logarithmically with the stack height.

Magnetic properties of chiral EuIr$_2$P$_2$

We present a minimal model that provides a description of the magnetic and thermodynamic properties of \Eu. The model contains two exchange coupling parameters, which are calculated using Density Functional Theory, and a local easy axis magnetic anisotropy term. The classical ground state of the system is a generalization of the well known 120$^\circ$ structure observed in triangular antiferromagnets. Monte Carlo simulations show two phase transitions as a function of the temperature. With increasing temperature, the system transitions from the ground state into a high-entropy collinear antiferromagnet, which in turn at higher temperatures presents a second order transition to a paramagnetic state. A high enough external magnetic field parallel to the anisotropy axis produces a spin-flop transition at low temperatures. The field also reduces the temperature range of stability of the collinear antiferromagnet phase and leads to a single phase transition as a function of the temperature. The reported behavior of the specific heat, the magnetization, and the magnetic susceptibility is in agreement with the available experimental data. Finally, we present the magnetic phase diagrams for magnetic fields parallel and perpendicular to the easy axis.

Antiferromagnetism weakening with Y-substitution in the TbRhIn$_5$ intermetallic system

We report measurements of the temperature dependence specific heat, magnetic susceptibility in single crystals of the series of intermetallic compounds Tb$_{1-x}$Y$_x$RhIn$_5$ (nominal concentrations $x= 0.15, 0.30, 0.40, 0.50$ and $0.70$). A mean field approximation to simulate the macroscopic properties along the series has been used. Neutron diffraction data in powdered sample of nominal concentration Tb$_{0.6}$Y$_{0.4}$RhIn$_5$ reveal AFM propagation vector $k=[\frac{1}{2}~0~\frac{1}{2}]$ with the magnetic moments oriented close to the tetragonal \textit{c} axis. We discuss the role of combined effects of crystalline electric field (CEF) perturbations and dilution in the magnetic properties evolution with Y content. In particular, we suggest that changes in the Tb-In first neighbors distances, i.e. the TbIn$_3$ cuboctahedra distortion, are responsible for changes in the Tb crystalline potential and the possible reorientation of Tb magnetic moments for $x>$0.4. This reflects non negligible variations of the $B^{m}_{n}$ crystal field parameters and the energy levels splitting with \textit{x}.

Collapse of the $Gd^{3+}$ ESR fine structure throughout the coherent temperature of the Gd-doped Kondo Semiconductor $CeFe_{4}P_{12}$

Experiments on the $Gd^{3+}$ Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) in the filled skutterudite $Ce_{1-x}Gd_{x}Fe_{4}P_{12}$ ($x \approx 0.001$), at temperatures where the host resistivity manifests a smooth insulator-metal crossover, provides evidence of the underlying Kondo physics associated with this system. At low temperatures (below $T \approx K$), $Ce_{1-x}Gd_{x}Fe_{4}P_{12}$ behaves as a Kondo-insulator with a relatively large hybridization gap, and the $Gd^{3+}$ ESR spectra displays a fine structure with lorentzian line shape, typical of insulating media. The electronic gap is attributed to the large hybridization present in the coherent regime of a Kondo lattice, when Ce 4f-electrons cooperate with band properties at half-filling. Mean-field calculations suggest that the electron-phonon interaction is fundamental at explaining the strong 4f-electron hybridization in this filled skutterudite. The resulting electronic structure is strongly temperature dependent, and at about $T^{*} \approx 160 K$ the system undergoes an insulator-to-metal transition induced by the withdrawal of 4f-electrons from the Fermi volume, the system becoming metallic and non-magnetic. The $Gd^{3+}$ ESR fine structure coalesces into a single dysonian resonance, as in metals. Still, our simulations suggest that exchange-narrowing via the usual Korringa mechanism, alone, is not capable of describing the thermal behavior of the ESR spectra in the entire temperature region ($4.2$ - $300$ K). We propose that temperature activated fluctuating-valence of the Ce ions is the missing ingredient that, added to the usual exchange-narrowing mechanism, fully describes this unique temperature dependence of the $Gd^{3+}$ ESR fine structure observed in $Ce_{1-x}Gd_{x}Fe_{4}P_{12}$.

Physical properties and magnetic structure of the intermetallic CeCuBi2 compound

In this work, we combined magnetization, pressure dependent electrical resistivity, heat-capacity, 63Cu Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and X-ray resonant magnetic scattering experiments to investigate the physical properties of the intermetallic CeCuBi2 compound. Our single crystals show an antiferromagnetic ordering at TN ~ 16 K and the magnetic properties indicate that this compound is an Ising antiferromagnet. In particular, the low temperature magnetization data revealed a spin-flop transition at T = 5 K when magnetic fields about 5.5 T are applied along the c-axis. Moreover, the X-ray magnetic diffraction data below TN revealed a commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with propagation wavevector (0 0 1/2) with the Ce^3+ moments oriented along the c-axis. Furthermore, our heat capacity, pressure dependent resistivity and temperature dependent 63Cu NMR data suggest that CeCuBi2 exhibits a weak heavy fermion behavior with strongly localized Ce^3+ 4f electrons. We thus discuss a scenario taking into account the anisotropic magnetic interaction between the Ce^3+ ions along with the tetragonal crystalline electric field effects in CeCuBi2.

Unusual giant magnetostriction in the ferrimagnet Gd$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$

We report an unusual giant linear magnetostrictive effect in the ferrimagnet Gd$_{2/3}$Ca$_{1/3}$MnO$_3$ ($T_{c} \approx$80 K). Remarkably, the magnetostriction, negative at high temperature ($T \approx T_{c}$), becomes positive below 15 K when the magnetization of the Gd sublattice overcomes the magnetization of the Mn sublattice. A rather simple model where the magnetic energy competes against the elastic energy gives a good account of the observed results and confirms that Gd plays a crucial role in this unusual observation. Unlike previous works in manganites where only striction associated with 3$d$ Mn orbitals is considered, our results show that the lanthanide 4$f$ orbitals related striction can be very important too and it cannot be disregarded.

Improved parallelization techniques for the density matrix renormalization group

A distributed-memory parallelization strategy for the density matrix renormalization group is proposed for cases where correlation functions are required. This new strategy has substantial improvements with respect to previous works. A scalability analysis shows an overall serial fraction of 9.4% and an efficiency of around 60% considering up to eight nodes. Sources of possible parallel slowdown are pointed out and solutions to circumvent these issues are brought forward in order to achieve a better performance.

Coexisting on- and off-center Yb3+ sites in Ce1-xYbxFe4P12 skutterudites

Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements performed on the filled skutterudite system Ce1-x$YbxFe4P12 (x< 0.003) unequivocally reveal the coexistence of two Yb3+ resonances, associated with sites of considerably different occupations and temperature behaviors. Detailed analysis of the ESR data suggests a scenario where the fraction of oversized (Fe2P3)4 cages that host Yb ions are filled with a low occupation of on-center Yb3+ sites and a highly occupied T-dependent distribution of off-center Yb3+ sites. Analysis of the 171Yb3+ (I=1/2) isotope hyperfine splittings reveal that these two sites are associated with a low (~ 1 GHz) and a high (> 15 GHz) rattling frequency, respectively. Our findings introduce Yb3+ in Th symmetry systems and uses the Yb3+ ESR as a sensitive microscopic probe to investigate the Yb3+ ions dynamics.

Direct determination of the crystal field parameters of Dy, Er and Yb impurities in the skutterudite compound CeFe$_{4}$P$_{12}$ by Electron Spin Resonance

Despite extensive research on the skutterudites for the last decade, their electric crystalline field ground state is still a matter of controversy. We show that Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) measurements can determine the full set of crystal field parameters (CFPs) for the Th cubic symmetry (Im3) of the Ce$_{1-x}$R$_{x}$Fe$_{4}$P$_{12}$ (R = Dy, Er, Yb, $x\lesssim 0.003$) skutterudite compounds. From the analysis of the ESR data the three CFPs, B4c, B6c and B6t were determined for each of these rare-earths at the Ce$^{3+}$ site. The field and temperature dependence of the measured magnetization for the doped crystals are in excellent agreement with the one predicted by the CFPs Bnm derived from ESR.

La-dilution effects in TbRhIn5 antiferromagnet

We report measurements of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, resonant x-ray magnetic scattering (XRMS) and heat capacity on single crystals of Tb1-xLaxRhIn5 for nominal concentrations in the range 0.0 < x < 1.0. TbRhIn5 is an antiferromagnetic (AFM) compound with TN ~ 46 K, which is the highest TN values along the RRhIn5 series. We explore the suppression of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) state as a function of La-doping considering the effects of La-induced dilution and perturbations to the tetragonal crystalline electrical field (CEF) on the long range magnetic interaction between the Tb$^{3+}$ ions. Additionally, we also discuss the role of disorder. Our results and analysis are compared to the properties of the undoped compound and of other members of the RRhIn5 family and structurally related compounds (R2RhIn8 and RIn3). The XRMS measurements reveal that the commensurate magnetic structure with the magnetic wave-vector (0,1/2,1/2) observed for the undoped compound is robust against doping perturbations in Tb0.6La0.4RhIn5 compound.

Mott transition in the Hubbard model away from particle-hole symmetry

We solve the Dynamical Mean Field Theory equations for the Hubbard model away from the particle-hole symmetric case using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method. We focus our study on the region of strong interactions and finite doping where two solutions coexist. We obtain precise predictions for the boundaries of the coexistence region. In addition, we demonstrate the capabilities of this precise method by obtaining the frequency dependent optical conductivity spectra.

Physical properties and magnetic structure of TbRhIn5 intermetallic compound

In this work we report the physical properties of the new intermetallic compound TbRhIn5 investigated by means of temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, heat-capacity and resonant x-ray magnetic diffraction experiments. TbRhIn5 is an intermetallic compound that orders antiferromagnetically at TN = 45.5 K, the highest ordering temperature among the existing RRhIn5 (1-1-5, R = rare earth) materials. This result is in contrast to what is expected from a de Gennes scaling along the RRhIn5 series. The X-ray resonant diffraction data below TN reveal a commensurate antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with a propagation vector (1/2 0 1/2) and the Tb moments oriented along the c-axis. Strong (over two order of magnitude) dipolar enhancements of the magnetic Bragg peaks were observed at both Tb absorption edges LII and LIII, indicating a fairly high polarization of the Tb 5d levels. Using a mean field model including an isotropic first-neighbors exchange interaction J(R-R) and the tetragonal crystalline electrical field (CEF), we were able to fit our experimental data and to explain the direction of the ordered Tb-moments and the enhanced TN of this compound. The evolution of the magnetic properties along the RRhIn5 series and its relation to CEF effects for a given rare-earth is discussed.

Spin order in the one-dimensional Kondo and Hund lattices

We study numerically the one-dimensional Kondo and Hund lattices consisting of localized spins interacting antiferro or ferromagnetically with the itinerant electrons, respectively. Using the Density Matrix Renormalization Group we find, for both models and in the small coupling regime, the existence of new magnetic phases where the local spins order forming ferromagnetic islands coupled antiferromagnetically. Furthermore, by increasing the interaction parameter $|J|$ we find that this order evolves toward the ferromagnetic regime through a spiral-like phase with longer characteristic wave lengths. These results shed new light on the zero temperature magnetic phase diagram for these models.

Charge and spin inhomogeneous phases in the Ferromagnetic Kondo Lattice Model

We study numerically the one-dimensional ferromagnetic Kondo lattice. This model is widely used to describe nickel and manganese perovskites. Due to the competition between double and super-exchange, we find a region where the formation of magnetic polarons induces a charge-ordered state. This ordering is present even in the absence of any inter-site Coulomb repulsion. There is an insulating gap associated to the charge structure formation. We also study the insulator-metal transition induced by a magnetic field which removes simultaneously both charge and spin ordering.

New Type of Charge and Magnetic order in the Ferromagnetic Kondo Lattice

We study numerically the one dimensional ferromagnetic Kondo lattice, a model widely used to describe nickel and manganese perovskites. By including a nearest neighbor Coulomb interaction (V) and a superexchange interaction between the localized moments (K), we obtain the phase diagram in parameter space for several dopings at T=0. Due to the competition between double and superexchange, we find a region where the formation of magnetic polarons induces a charge ordered (CO) state which survives also for V=0. This mechanism should be taken into account in theories of charge ordering involving spin degrees of freedom.
