Complete Fusion Enhancement and Suppression of Weakly Bound Nuclei at Near Barrier Energies

We consider the influence of breakup channels on the complete fusion of weakly bound systems in terms of dynamic polarization potentials. It is argued that the enhancement of the cross section at sub-barrier energies may be consistent with recent experimental observations that nucleon transfer, often leading to breakup, is dominant compared to direct breakup. The main trends of the experimental complete fusion cross section for $^{6,7}$Li + $^{209}$Bi are analyzed in the framework of the DPP approach.

Investigation of the role of shell structure in quasi-fission mass distributions

Systematic measurements of mass-ratio distributions for fission following collisions of $^{48}$Ti projectiles with even-even target nuclei from $^{144}$Sm to $^{208}$Pb have been made at sub-barrier energies. They show the presence of quasifission, and depend strongly on target nucleus deformation and the fissility of the composite nucleus. A new framework to analyse systematic mass-ratio measurements allows direct comparison with the trends expected from shell structure, independent of assumptions or fits. This indicates that quasi-fission mass distributions show trends consistent with low energy mass-asymmetric fission of the same actinide elements.

Novel insights into transfer processes in the reaction 16O+208Pb at sub-barrier energies

The collision of the doubly-magic nuclei $^{16}$O+$^{208}$Pb is a benchmark in nuclear reaction studies. Our new measurements of back-scattered projectile-like fragments at sub-barrier energies show show that transfer of 2 protons ($2p$) is much more probable than $α$-particle transfer. $2p$ transfer probabilities are strongly enhanced compared to expectations for the sequential transfer of two uncorrelated protons; at energies around the fusion barrier absolute probabilities for two proton transfer are similar to those for one proton transfer. This strong enhancement indicates strong $2p$ pairing correlations in $^{16}$O, and suggests evidence for the occurrence of a nuclear supercurrent of two-proton Cooper pairs in this reaction, already at energies well below the fusion barrier.

Suppression of complete fusion due to breakup in the reactions $^{10,11}$B + $^{209}$Bi

Above-barrier cross sections of $α$-active heavy reaction products, as well as fission, were measured for the reactions of $^{10,11}$B with $^{209}$Bi. Detailed analysis showed that the heavy products include components from incomplete fusion as well as complete fusion (CF), but fission originates almost exclusively from CF. Compared with fusion calculations without breakup, the CF cross sections are suppressed by 15% for $^{10}$B and 7% for $^{11}$B. A consistent and systematic variation of the suppression of CF for reactions of the weakly bound nuclei $^{6,7}$Li, $^{9}$Be, $^{10,11}$B on targets of $^{208}$Pb and $^{209}$Bi is found as a function of the breakup threshold energy.

Relating breakup and incomplete fusion of weakly-bound nuclei through a classical trajectory model with stochastic breakup

A classical dynamical model that treats break-up stochastically is presented for low energy reactions of weakly-bound nuclei. The three-dimensional model allows a consistent calculation of breakup, incomplete and complete fusion cross sections. The model is assessed by comparing the breakup observables with CDCC quantum mechanical predictions, which are found to be in reasonable agreement. Through the model, it is demonstrated that the breakup probability of the projectile as a function of its distance from the target is of primary importance for understanding complete and incomplete fusion at energies near the Coulomb barrier.

Fusion and breakup in the reactions of 6,7Li and 9Be

We develop a three body classical trajectory Monte Carlo (CTMC) method to dicsuss the effect of the breakup process on heavy-ion fusion reactions induced by weakly bound nuclei. This method follows the classical trajectories of breakup fragments after the breakup takes place, and thus provides an unambiguous separation between complete and incomplete fusion cross sections. Applying this method to the fusion reaction $^{6}$Li + $^{209}$Bi, we find that there is a significant contribution to the total complete fusion cross sections from the process where all the breakup fragments are captured by the target nucleus (i.e., the breakup followed by complete fusion).

Fusion dynamics around the Coulomb barrier

We perform exact coupled-channels calculations, taking into account properly the effects of Coulomb coupling and the finite excitation energy of collective excitations in the colliding nuclei, for three Fm formation reactions, $^{37}$Cl + $^{209}$Bi, $^{45}$Sc + $^{197}$Au, and $^{59}$Co + $^{181}$Ta. For the $^{37}$Cl + $^{209}$Bi and $^{45}$Sc + $^{197}$Au reactions, those calculations well reproduce the experimental total fission cross sections, and a part of the extra-push phenomena can be explained in terms of the Coulomb excitations to multi-phonon states. On the other hand, for the heaviest system, the deep-inelastic collisions become much more significant, and the fission cross sections are strongly overestimated. We also discuss the surprisingly large surface diffuseness parameters required to fit recent high-precision fusion data for medium-heavy systems, in connection with the fusion supression observed in massive systems.

Surface diffuseness anomaly in heavy-ion fusion potentials

Recent high precision experimental data for heavy-ion fusion cross sections at energies in the vicinity of the Coulomb barrier systematically show that a strikingly large surface diffuseness parameter for a Woods-Saxon potential is required in order to fit the data. We discuss possible origins for this anomaly, including the effects of dissipation and the sensitivity of fusion cross sections to the choice of inter-nuclear potential. Our study suggests that the frozen density approximation, which is often used in analyses of heavy-ion reactions, may have to be re-examined for heavy-ion fusion.

Influence of higher-order deformations in the ^{34}S + ^{168}Er fusion reaction

The shape of the measured barrier distribution for the ^{34}S + ^{168}Er reaction is analysed using the coupled-channels description. The ^{168}Er nucleus is a good candidate to test current fusion models description of deformation since it has a large quadrupole deformation with an insignificant hexadecapole deformation. Coupling to weaker channels, the 2^+_1 state in ^{34}S, the 3^-_1 state in ^{168}Er, and the pair neutron transfer channel, all were found to have little influence on the barrier distribution. A successful description of the barrier distribution was only obtained after the hexacontatetrapole deformation term in ^{168}Er (beta_6) was included in the coupling scheme. However, a positive value for beta_6 was needed where the macroscopic-microscopic model predicts a negative one.

Coupled-channels analysis of the $^{\bf 16}$O+$^{\bf 208}$Pb fusion barrier distribution

Analyses using simplified coupled-channels models have been unable to describe the shape of the previously measured fusion barrier distribution for the doubly magic $^{16}$O+$^{208}$Pb system. This problem was investigated by re-measuring the fission excitation function for $^{16}$O+$^{208}$Pb with improved accuracy and performing more exact coupled-channels calculations, avoiding the constant-coupling and first-order coupling approximations often used in simplified analyses. Couplings to the single- and 2-phonon states of $^{208}$Pb, correctly taking into account the excitation energy and the phonon character of these states, particle transfers, and the effects of varying the diffuseness of the nuclear potential, were all explored. However, in contrast to other recent analyses of precise fusion data, no satisfactory simultaneous description of the shape of the experimental barrier distribution and the fusion cross-sections for $^{16}$O+$^{208}$Pb was obtained.

Fusion versus Breakup: Observation of Large Fusion Suppression for ^9Be + ^{208}Pb

Complete fusion excitation functions for $^{9}$Be + $^{208}$Pb have been measured to high precision at near barrier energies. The experimental fusion barrier distribution extracted from these data allows reliable prediction of the expected complete fusion cross-sections. However, the measured cross-sections are only 68% of those predicted. The large cross-sections observed for incomplete fusion products support the interpretation that this suppression of fusion is caused by $^{9}$Be breaking up into charged fragments before reaching the fusion barrier. Implications for the fusion of radioactive nuclei are discussed.

Barrier Distributions as a Tool to Investigate Fusion and Fission

The recent availability of precisely measured fusion cross-sections has enabled the extraction of a representation of the distribution of barriers encountered during fusion. These representations, obtained from a variety of reactions, provide a direct observation of how the structure of the fusing nuclei changes the inter-nuclear potential landscape, thus affecting the fusion probability. Recent experiments showing the effects of static quadrupole and hexadecapole deformation, single-- and double-phonon states, transfer of nucleons between two nuclei, and high lying excited states are reviewed. The application of these concepts to the explanation of the anomalous fission-fragment anisotropies observed following reactions with actinides is discussed.

Evidence of Double Phonon Excitations in ^{16}O + ^{208}Pb Reaction

The fusion cross-sections for ^{16}O + ^{208}Pb, measured to high precision, enable the extraction of the distribution of fusion barriers. This shows a structure markedly different from the single-barrier which might be expected for fusion of two doubly-closed shell nuclei. The results of exact coupled channel calculations performed to understand the observations are presented. These calculations indicate that coupling to a double octupole phonon excited state in ^{208}Pb is necessary to explain the experimental barrier distributions.

Importance of Non-Linear Couplings in Fusion Barrier Distributions and Mean Angular Momenta

The effects of higher order coupling of surface vibrations to the relative motion on heavy-ion fusion reactions at near-barrier energies are investigated. The coupled channels equations are solved to all orders, and also in the linear and the quadratic coupling approximations. It is shown that the shape of fusion barrier distributions and the energy dependence of the average angular momentum of the compound nucleus can significantly change when the higher order couplings are included. The role of octupole vibrational excitation of ^{16}O in the ^{16}O + ^{144}Sm fusion reaction is also discussed using the all order coupled-channels equations.

Adiabatic quantum tunneling in heavy-ion sub-barrier fusion

High precision measurements of the fusion excitation functions for the reactions ^{40}Ca + ^{194}Pt, ^{192}Os clearly demonstrate that projectile excitation significantly modifies the potential barrier distribution. In sharp contrast, fusion of ^{16}O + ^{144}Sm appears to show no influence of the projectile excitation on the shape of the barrier distribution. These apparently conflicting conclusions are reconciled in this work, using realistic coupled--channels calculations, which show that high energy states produce an adiabatic potential renormalisation. This result indicates that adiabatic effects restrict, in a natural way, the states which influence the shape of a fusion barrier distribution. The analysis of barrier distributions thus offers a criterion for the relevance of the `counter term' prescription in the Caldeira-Leggett approach.

Validity of the linear coupling approximation in heavy-ion fusion reactions at sub barrier energies

The role of higher order coupling of surface vibrations to the relative motion in heavy-ion fusion reactions at near-barrier energies is investigated. The coupled channels equations are solved to all orders, and also in the linear and the quadratic coupling approximations. Taking $^{64}$Ni + $^{92,96}$Zr reactions as examples, it is shown that all order couplings lead to considerably improved agreement with the experimentally measured fusion cross sections and average angular momenta of the compound nucleus for such heavy nearly symmetric systems. The importance of higher order coupling is also examined for asymmetric systems like $^{16}$O + $^{112}$Cd, $^{144}$Sm, for which previous calculations of the fusion cross section seemed to indicate that the linear coupling approximation was adequate. It is shown that the shape of the barrier distributions and the energy dependence of the average angular momentum can change significantly when the higher order couplings are included, even for systems where measured fusion cross sections may seem to be well reproduced by the linear coupling approximation.
