Training set cleansing of backdoor poisoning by self-supervised representation learning

A backdoor or Trojan attack is an important type of data poisoning attack against deep neural network (DNN) classifiers, wherein the training dataset is poisoned with a small number of samples that each possess the backdoor pattern (usually a pattern that is either imperceptible or innocuous) and which are mislabeled to the attacker's target class. When trained on a backdoor-poisoned dataset, a DNN behaves normally on most benign test samples but makes incorrect predictions to the target class when the test sample has the backdoor pattern incorporated (i.e., contains a backdoor trigger). Here we focus on image classification tasks and show that supervised training may build stronger association between the backdoor pattern and the associated target class than that between normal features and the true class of origin. By contrast, self-supervised representation learning ignores the labels of samples and learns a feature embedding based on images' semantic content. %We thus propose to use unsupervised representation learning to avoid emphasising backdoor-poisoned training samples and learn a similar feature embedding for samples of the same class. Using a feature embedding found by self-supervised representation learning, a data cleansing method, which combines sample filtering and re-labeling, is developed. Experiments on CIFAR-10 benchmark datasets show that our method achieves state-of-the-art performance in mitigating backdoor attacks.

Decoupling and tuning competing effects of different types of defects on flux creep in irradiated YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ coated conductors

YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7-δ}$ coated conductors (CCs) have achieved high critical current densities ($\textit{J}_{c}$) that can be further increased through the introduction of additional defects using particle irradiation. However, these gains are accompanied by increases in the flux creep rate, a manifestation of competition between the different types of defects. Here, we study this competition to better understand how to design pinning landscapes that simultaneously increase $\textit{J}_{c}$ and reduce creep. CCs grown by metal organic deposition show non-monotonic changes in the temperature-dependent creep rate, $\textit{S}(\textit{T})$. Notably, in low fields, there is a conspicuous dip to low $\textit{S}$ as temperature ($\textit{T}$) increases from ~20 K to ~65 K. Oxygen-, proton-, and Au-irradiation substantially increase $\textit{S}$ in this temperature range. Focusing on an oxygen-irradiated CC, we investigate the contribution of different types of irradiation-induced defects to the flux creep rate. Specifically, we study $\textit{S}(\textit{T})$ as we tune the relative density of point defects to larger defects by annealing both an as-grown and an irradiated CC in O$_{2}$ at temperatures $\textit{T}_{A}$ = 250$°$C to 600$°$C. We observe a steady decrease in $\textit{S}$($\textit{T}$ > 20 K) with increasing $\textit{T}_{A}$, unveiling the role of pre-existing nanoparticle precipitates in creating the dip in $\textit{S}(\textit{T})$ and point defects and clusters in increasing $\textit{S}$ at intermediate temperatures.

Supersymmetric SO(10) Grand Unification at the LHC and Beyond

We study models of supersymmetric grand unification based on the SO(10) gauge group. We investigate scenarios of non-universal gaugino masses including models containing a mixture of two representations of hidden sector chiral superfields. We analyse the effect of excluding mu from the fine-tuning measure, and confront the results with low energy constraints, including the Higgs boson mass, dark matter relic density and supersymmetry bounds. We also determine high scale Yukawa coupling ratios and confront the results with theoretical predictions. Finally, we present two additional benchmarks that should be explored at the LHC and future colliders.

Supersymmetric SU(5) Grand Unification for a Post Higgs Boson Era

We investigate models of supersymmetric grand unification based on the gauge group SU(5). We consider models with non-universal gaugino masses and confront them with low energy constraints, including the Higgs boson mass and the Dark Matter relic density. We also discuss fine-tuning and show the effect of not including the mu-parameter into fine tuning determinations. With this relaxation, we find viable scenarios with low fine tuning and study some model choices for gaugino mass ratios. We demonstrate that some orbifold inspired models may provide low fine-tuning and the preferred relic abundance of Dark Matter while evading all experimental constraints. We present benchmarks that should be explored at the LHC and future colliders.

Pre-entaglement shows that individual quantum systems do not possess states

We consider an experiment in which quantum tomography data is collected before and after an entangling measurement performed on two independently prepared, maximally-mixed ensembles. We show that each sub-ensemble that is, as expected, entangled after the measurement is also entangled before it. We call the latter pre-entanglement. If individual systems possessed quantum states, their independent preparations would mean the sub-ensembles were in separable states prior to the entanglement event. The contradiction can be resolved by assigning states only to ensembles and not individual quantum systems. Pre-entanglement found here at the quantum level makes very doubtful the assumption of preparation independence at the ontic level required for a recent theorem.

Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs Properties

This Report summarizes the results of the activities in 2012 and the first half of 2013 of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group. The main goal of the working group was to present the state of the art of Higgs Physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. This report follows the first working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002) and the second working group report Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002). After the discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC in mid-2012 this report focuses on refined prediction of Standard Model (SM) Higgs phenomenology around the experimentally observed value of 125-126 GeV, refined predictions for heavy SM-like Higgs bosons as well as predictions in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and first steps to go beyond these models. The other main focus is on the extraction of the characteristics and properties of the newly discovered particle such as couplings to SM particles, spin and CP-quantum numbers etc.

Doubling the Critical Current Density of High Temperature Superconducting Coated Conductors through Proton Irradiation

The in-field critical current of commercial YBa2Cu3O7 coated conductors can be substantially enhanced by post-fabrication irradiation with 4 MeV protons. Irradiation to a fluence of 8x10^16 p/cm^2 induces a near doubling of the critical current in fields of 6 T || c at a temperature of 27 K, a field and temperature range of interest for applications such as rotating machinery. A mixed pinning landscape of preexisting precipitates and twin boundaries and small, finely dispersed irradiation induced defects may account for the improved vortex pinning in high magnetic fields. Our data indicate that there is significant head-room for further enhancements.

Constraining Grand Unification using first and second generation sfermions

We investigate the spectrum of supersymmetric grand unification models based on the gauge groups SU(5), SO(10) and E6, paying particular attention to the first and second generation. We demonstrate how the measurement of the first or second generation sfermion spectrum may be used to constrain the underlying grand unification structure. The smallness of first and second generation Yukawa interactions allows us to perform an analytic analysis, deriving expressions for the high scale parameters in terms of the low scale sfermion masses. We also describe a sum rule that provides an SO(10) mass prediction, distinct from SU(5), and discuss E6 models, both with and without extra exotic matter at low energies. The derived relations are compared with numerical results including two-loop running and the full Yukawa dependence.

Catalyst-Free Growth of Millimeter-Long Topological Insulator Bi2Se3 Nanoribbons and the Observation of pi Berry Phase

We report the growth of single-crystalline Bi2Se3 nanoribbons with lengths up to several millimeters via a catalyst-free physical vapor deposition method. Scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis reveals that the nanoribbons grow along the (1120) direction. We obtain a detailed characterization of the electronic structure of the Bi2Se3 nanoribbons from measurements of Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations. Angular dependent magneto-transport measurements reveal a dominant two-dimensional contribution originating from surface states and weak contribution from the bulk states. The catalyst-free synthesis yields high-purity nanocrystals enabling the observation of a large number of SdH oscillation periods and allowing for an accurate determination of the pi-Berry phase, one of the key features of Dirac fermions in topological insulators. The long-length nanoribbons can empower the potential for fabricating multiple nanoelectronic devices on a single nanoribbon.

Constrained Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model with a Higgs Near 125 GeV

We study the parameter space of the constrained exceptional supersymmetric standard model (cE6SSM) consistent with a Higgs signal near 125 GeV and the LHC searches for squarks, gluinos and Z'. The cE6SSM parameter space consistent with correct electroweak symmetry breaking, is represented by scans in the (m0, M1/2) plane for fixed Z' mass and tan beta, with squark, gluino and Higgs masses plotted as contours in this plane. We find that a 125 GeV Higgs mass only arises for a sufficiently large Z' mass, mostly above current limits, and for particular regions of squark and gluino masses corresponding to multi-TeV squark masses, but with lighter gluinos typically within reach of the LHC 8 TeV or forthcoming 14 TeV runs. Successful dark matter relic abundance may be achieved over all the parameter space, assuming a bino-like LSP with a nearby heavier inert Higgsino doublet and decoupled inert singlinos, resulting in conventional gluino decay signatures. A set of typical benchmark points with a Higgs near 125 GeV is provided which exemplifies these features.

The gravitational cusp anomalous dimension from AdS space

Recently a new picture has been developed for examining Wilson lines, and the corresponding anomalous dimensions which govern their renormalization properties. By making a particular coordinate transform, the calculation of the cusp anomalous dimension in QED or QCD can be related to the energy of a pair of static charges in Euclidean Anti-de-Sitter (AdS) space. This paper shows how the same picture can be used to describe Wilson lines in quantum gravity. We show how the relevant cusp anomalous dimension (which has recently been shown to be one loop exact) can be obtained using the Newtonian limit of General Relativity. We also show how both the QED and gravity cases emerge as special cases of a general formulation, and that a continuous parameter exists which interpolates between them. The results may be useful in examining the relations between gauge and gravity theories.

Alternative Experimental Protocol for a PBR-Like Result

Pusey, Barrett and Rudolph (PBR) have recently proven an important new theorem in the foundations of quantum mechanics. Here we propose alternative experimental protocols which lead to the PBR result for a special case and a weaker PBR-like result generally. Alternative experimental protocols support the assumption of measurement independence required for the PBR theorem.

Collider phenomenology of the E6SSM

We consider collider signatures of the exceptional supersymmetric (SUSY) standard model (E6SSM). This E6 inspired SUSY model is based on the SM gauge group together with an extra U(1) gauge symmetry under which right--handed neutrinos have zero charge. To ensure anomaly cancellation and gauge coupling unification the low energy matter content of the E6SSM involve extra exotic matter beyond the MSSM. We discuss the collider signatures associated with the production of new particles predicted by the E6SSM and consider the implications of this model for dark matter and Higgs phenomenology. Since exotic quarks in the E6SSM can be either diquarks or leptoquarks they may provide spectacular new physics signals at the LHC.

LHC Signatures of the Constrained Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model

We discuss two striking Large Hadron Collider (LHC) signatures of the constrained version of the exceptional supersymmetric standard model (cE6SSM), based on a universal high energy soft scalar mass m_0, soft trilinear coupling A_0 and soft gaugino mass M_{1/2}. The first signature we discuss is that of light exotic colour triplet charge 1/3 fermions, which we refer to as D-fermions. We calculate the LHC production cross section of D-fermions, and discuss their decay patterns. Secondly we discuss the E6 type U(1)_N spin-1 Z' gauge boson and show how it may decay into exotic states, increasing its width and modifying the line shape of the dilepton final state. We illustrate these features using two representative cE6SSM benchmark points, including an "early LHC discovery" point, giving the Feynman rules and numerical values for the relevant couplings in order to facilitate further studies.

Action Duality: A Constructive Principle for Quantum Foundations

An analysis of the path-integral approach to quantum theory motivates the hypothesis that two experiments with the same classical action should have dual ontological descriptions. If correct, this hypothesis would not only constrain realistic interpretations of quantum theory, but would also act as a constructive principle, allowing any realistic model of one experiment to generate a corresponding model for its action-dual. Two pairs of action-dual experiments are presented, including one experiment that violates the Bell inequality and yet is action-dual to a single particle. The implications generally support retrodictive and retrocausal interpretations.

State-dependent rotations of spins by weak measurements

IIt is shown that a weak measurement of a quantum system produces a new state of the quantum system which depends on the prior state, as well as the (uncontrollable) measured position of the pointer variable of the weak measurement apparatus. The result imposes a constraint on hidden-variable theories which assign a different state to a quantum system than standard quantum mechanics. The constraint means that a crypto-nonlocal hidden-variable theory can be ruled out in a more direct way than previously.

Results from a Prototype Chicane-Based Energy Spectrometer for a Linear Collider

The International Linear Collider and other proposed high energy e+ e- machines aim to measure with unprecedented precision Standard Model quantities and new, not yet discovered phenomena. One of the main requirements for achieving this goal is a measurement of the incident beam energy with an uncertainty close to 1e-4. This article presents the analysis of data from a prototype energy spectrometer commissioned in 2006--2007 in SLAC's End Station A beamline. The prototype was a 4-magnet chicane equipped with beam position monitors measuring small changes of the beam orbit through the chicane at different beam energies. A single bunch energy resolution close to 5e-4 was measured, which is satisfactory for most scenarios. We also report on the operational experience with the chicane-based spectrometer and suggest ways of improving its performance.

Predictions of the Constrained Exceptional Supersymmetric Standard Model

We discuss the predictions of a constrained version of the exceptional supersymmetric standard model (cE6SSM), based on a universal high energy soft scalar mass m_0, soft trilinear coupling A_0 and soft gaugino mass M_1/2. We predict a supersymmetry (SUSY) spectrum containing a light gluino, a light wino-like neutralino and chargino pair and a light bino-like neutralino, with other sparticle masses except the lighter stop being much heavier. In addition, the cE6SSM allows the possibility of light exotic colour triplet charge 1/3 fermions and scalars, leading to early exotic physics signals at the LHC. We focus on the possibility of a Z' gauge boson with mass close to 1 TeV, and low values of (m0,M_1/2), which would correspond to an LHC discovery using "first data", and propose a set of benchmark points to illustrate this.
