Pathway to the Square Kilometre Array - The German White Paper -

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA) is the most ambitious radio telescope ever planned. With a collecting area of about a square kilometre, the SKA will be far superior in sensitivity and observing speed to all current radio facilities. The scientific capability promised by the SKA and its technological challenges provide an ideal base for interdisciplinary research, technology transfer, and collaboration between universities, research centres and industry. The SKA in the radio regime and the European Extreme Large Telescope (E-ELT) in the optical band are on the roadmap of the European Strategy Forum for Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) and have been recognised as the essential facilities for European research in astronomy. This "White Paper" outlines the German science and R&D interests in the SKA project and will provide the basis for future funding applications to secure German involvement in the Square Kilometre Array.

Phase transitions in the early and the present Universe

The evolution of the Universe is the ultimate laboratory to study fundamental physics across energy scales that span about 25 orders of magnitude: from the grand unification scale through particle and nuclear physics scales down to the scale of atomic physics. The standard models of cosmology and particle physics provide the basic understanding of the early and present Universe and predict a series of phase transitions that occurred in succession during the expansion and cooling history of the Universe. We survey these phase transitions, highlighting the equilibrium and non-equilibrium effects as well as their observational and cosmological consequences. We discuss the current theoretical and experimental programs to study phase transitions in QCD and nuclear matter in accelerators along with the new results on novel states of matter as well as on multi- fragmentation in nuclear matter. A critical assessment of similarities and differences between the conditions in the early universe and those in ultra- relativistic heavy ion collisions is presented. Cosmological observations and accelerator experiments are converging towards an unprecedented understanding of the early and present Universe.

On the large-angle anomalies of the microwave sky

[Abridged] We apply the multipole vector framework to full-sky maps derived from the first year WMAP data. We significantly extend our earlier work showing that the two lowest cosmologically interesting multipoles, l=2 and 3, are not statistically isotropic. These results are compared to the findings obtained using related methods. In particular, the planes of the quadrupole and the octopole are unexpectedly aligned. Moreover, the combined quadrupole plus octopole is surprisingly aligned with the geometry and direction of motion of the solar system: the plane they define is perpendicular to the ecliptic plane and to the plane defined by the dipole direction, and the ecliptic plane carefully separates stronger from weaker extrema, running within a couple of degrees of the null-contour between a maximum and a minimum over more than 120deg of the sky. Even given the alignment of the quadrupole and octopole with each other, we find that their alignment with the ecliptic is unlikely at >98% C.L., and argue that it is in fact unlikely at >99.9% C.L. We explore the role of foregrounds showing that the known Galactic foregrounds are unlikely to lead to these correlations. Multipole vectors, like individual a_lm, are very sensitive to sky cuts, and we demonstrate that analyses using cut skies induce relatively large errors, thus weakening the observed correlations but preserving their consistency with the full-sky results. Finally we apply our tests to COBE cut-sky maps and briefly extend the analysis to higher multipoles. If the correlations we observe are indeed a signal of non-cosmic origin, then the lack of low-l power will very likely be exacerbated, with important consequences for our understanding of cosmology on large scales.

Formation of small-scale structure in SUSY CDM

The lightest supersymmetric particle, most likely the lightest neutralino, is one of the most prominent particle candidates for cold dark matter (CDM). We show that the primordial spectrum of density fluctuations in neutralino CDM has a sharp cut-off, induced by two different damping mechanisms. During the kinetic decoupling of neutralinos, non-equilibrium processes constitute viscosity effects, which damp or even absorb density perturbations in CDM. After the last scattering of neutralinos, free streaming induces neutralino flows from overdense to underdense regions of space. Both damping mechanisms together define a minimal mass scale for perturbations in neutralino CDM, before the inhomogeneities enter the nonlinear epoch of structure formation. We find that the very first gravitationally bound neutralino clouds ought to have masses above 10^{-6} solar masses, which is six orders of magnitude above the mass of possible axion miniclusters.

Gas models for inflation and quintessence

Specific internal self-interactions in gaseous cosmic fluids are shown to give rise to effective negative pressures which may violate the strong energy condition. On this basis we discuss the transition from an initial de Sitter phase to a subsequent Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker period as a non-equilibrium configuration of an ultrarelativistic gas. An accelerated expansion of the present universe is obtained as the consequence of a negative internal friction force which is self-consistently exerted on the non-relativistic cold dark matter (CDM) type microscopic constituents of the cosmic gas.

Revisiting the calculations of inflationary perturbations

We present a new approximation scheme that allows us to increase the accuracy of analytical predictions of the power spectra of inflationary perturbations for two specific classes of inflationary models. Among these models are chaotic inflation with a monomial potential, power-law inflation and natural inflation (inflation at a maximum). After reviewing the established first order results we calculate the amplitudes and spectral indices for these classes of models at higher orders in the slow-roll parameters for scalar and tensorial perturbations.

The gravitational polarization tensor of thermal $λϕ^4$ theory

The low-momentum structure of the gravitational polarization tensor of an ultrarelativistic plasma of scalar particles with $λϕ^4$ interactions is evaluated in a two-loop calculation up to and including order $λ^{3/2}$. This turns out to require an improved perturbation theory which resums a local thermal mass term as well as nonlocal hard-thermal-loop vertices of scalar and gravitational fields.

Effects of weak self-interactions in a relativistic plasma on cosmological perturbations

The exact solutions for linear cosmological perturbations which have been obtained for collisionless relativistic matter within thermal field theory are extended to a self-interacting case. The two-loop contributions of scalar $λϕ^4$ theory to the thermal graviton self-energy are evaluated, which give the $O(λ)$ corrections in the perturbation equations. The changes are found to be perturbative on scales comparable to or larger than the Hubble horizon, but the determination of the large-time damping behavior of subhorizon perturbations requires a resummation of thermally induced masses.

Novel Symmetry of Non-Einsteinian Gravity in Two Dimensions

The integrability of $R^2$-gravity with torsion in two dimensions is traced to an ultralocal dynamical symmetry of constraints and momenta in Hamiltonian phase space. It may be interpreted as a quadratically deformed $iso(2,1)$-algebra with the deformation consisting of the Casimir operators of the undeformed algebra. The locally conserved quantity encountered in the explicit solution is identified as an element of the centre of this algebra. Specific contractions of the algebra are related to specific limits of the explicit solutions of this model.
