Evolution from Ferromagnetism to Antiferromagnetism in Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2

Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 is a model system to address two challenging problems in the field of strongly correlated electron systems: The first is the intriguing competition between ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) order when approaching a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP). The second is the occurrence of magnetic order along a very hard crystalline electric field (CEF) direction, i.e. along the one with the smallest available magnetic moment. Here, we present a detailed study of the evolution of the magnetic order in this system from a FM state with moments along the very hard c direction at x = 0.27 towards the yet unknown magnetic state at x = 0. We first observe a transition towards an AFM canted state with decreasing x and then to a pure AFM state. This confirms that the QCP in YbRh2Si2 is AFM, but the phase diagram is very similar to those observed in some inherently FM systems like NbFe2 and CeRuPO, which suggests that the basic underlying instability might be FM. Despite the huge CEF anisotropy the ordered moment retains a component along the c-axis also in the AFM state. The huge CEF anisotropy in Yb(Rh1-xCox)2Si2 excludes that this hard-axis ordering originates from a competing exchange anisotropy as often proposed for other heavy-fermion systems. Instead, it points to an order-by-disorder based mechanism.

Spectral Characterization of a Microbolometer Focal Plane Array at Terahertz Frequencies

We have developed a method to characterize the spectral response of an uncooled microbolometer focal plane array at a broad range of terahertz (THz) frequencies (4~50 THz). This is achieved by using a spectrum-tailored blackbody radiator as a broadband THz source and measuring its spectral power with a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) interferometer. With an additional measurement with a pyroelectric detector as a reference, the spectral response of the microbolometer relative to the pyroelectric reference is obtained with a signal-to-noise ratio of 100 over a >50 THz bandwidth.

Emergence of the Isotropic Kitaev Honeycomb Lattice with Two-dimensional Ising Universality in {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$

Anderson proposed structural topology in frustrated magnets hosting novel quantum spin liquids (QSLs). The QSL state is indeed exactly derived by fractionalizing the spin excitation into spinless Majorana fermions in a perfect two dimensional (2D) honeycomb lattice, the so-called Kitaev lattice, and its experimental realisation is eagerly being pursued. Here we, for the first time, report the Kitaev lattice stacking with van der Waals (vdW) bonding in a high quality {\alpha}-RuCl$_3$ crystal using x-ray and neutron diffractions. Even in absence of apparent monoclinic distortion, the system exhibits antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering below 6.5 K, likely due to minute magnetic interaction from trigonal distortion and/or interlayer coupling additionally to the Kitaev Hamiltonian. We also demonstrate 2D Ising-like critical behaviors near the N\'eel temperature in the order parameter and specific heat, capturing the characteristics of short-range spin-spin correlations underlying the Kitaev model. Our findings hold promise for unveiling enigmatic physics emerging from the Kitaev QSL.

Effects of pressure on the ferromagnetic state of the CDW compound SmNiC2

We report the pressure response of charge-density-wave (CDW) and ferromagnetic (FM) phases of the rare-earth intermetallic SmNiC2 up to 5.5 GPa. The CDW transition temperature (T_{CDW}), which is reflected as a sharp inflection in the electrical resistivity, is almost independent of pressure up to 2.18 GPa but is strongly enhanced at higher pressures, increasing from 155.7 K at 2.2 GPa to 279.3 K at 5.5 GPa. Commensurate with the sharp increase in T_{CDW}, the first-order FM phase transition, which decreases with applied pressure, bifurcates into the upper (T_{M1}) and lower (T_c) phase transitions and the lower transition changes its nature to second order above 2.18 GPa. Enhancement both in the residual resistivity and the Fermi-liquid T^2 coefficient A near 3.8 GPa suggests abundant magnetic quantum fluctuations that arise from the possible presence of a FM quantum critical point.

Pressure effects on the heavy-fermion antiferromagnet CeAuSb2

The f-electron compound CeAuSb2, which crystallizes in the ZrCuSi2-type tetragonal structure, orders antiferromagnetically between 5 and 6.8 K, where the antiferromagnetic transition temperature T_N depends on the occupancy of the Au site. Here we report the electrical resistivity and heat capacity of a high-quality crystal CeAuSb2 with T_N of 6.8 K, the highest for this compound. The magnetic transition temperature is initially suppressed with pressure, but is intercepted by a new magnetic state above 2.1 GPa. The new phase shows a dome shape with pressure and coexists with another phase at pressures higher than 4.7 GPa. The electrical resistivity shows a T^2 Fermi liquids behavior in the complex magnetic state, and the residual resistivity and the T^2 resistivity coefficient increases with pressure, suggesting the possibility of a magnetic quantum critical point at a higher pressure.
