Influence of carrier lifetime on quantum criticality and superconducting Tc of (TMTSF)_2ClO_4

This work presents and analyzes electrical resistivity data on the organic superconductor (TMTSF)$_2$ClO$_4$ and their anion substituted alloys (TMTSF)$_2$(ClO$_4$)$_{1-x}$(ReO$_4$)$_x$ along the least conducting $c^\star$ axis. Nonmagnetic disorder introduced by finite size domains of anion ordering on non Fermi liquid character of resistivity is investigated near the conditions of quantum criticality. The evolution of the $T$-linear resistivity term with anion disorder shows a limited decrease in contrast with the complete suppression of the critical temperature $T_c$ as expected for unconventional superconductivity beyond a threshold value of $x$. The resulting breakdown of scaling between both quantities is compared to the theoretical predictions of a linearized Boltzmann equation combined to the scaling theory of umklapp scattering in the presence of disorder induced pair-breaking for the carriers.

Correlation between linear resistivity and Tc in organic and pnictide superconductors

A linear temperature dependence of the electrical resistivity as T -> 0 is the hallmark of quantum criticality in heavy-fermion metals and the archetypal normal-state property of high-Tc superconductors, yet in both cases it remains unexplained. We report a linear resistivity on the border of spin-density-wave order in the organic superconductor (TMTSF)2X (X = PF6, ClO4), whose strength scales with the superconducting temperature Tc. This scaling, also present in the pnictide superconductors, reveals an intimate connection between linear-T scattering and pairing, shown by renormalization group theory to arise from antiferromagnetic fluctuations, enhanced by the interference of superconducting correlations. Our results suggest that linear resistivity in general may be a consequence of such interference and pairing in overdoped high-Tc cuprates is driven by antiferromagnetic fluctuations, as in organic and pnictide superconductors.

On the superconducting state of the organic conductor $(TMTSF)_2ClO_4$

$(TMTSF)_2ClO_4$ is a quasi-one dimensional organic conductor and superconductor with $T_c=1.4$K, and one of at least two Bechgaard salts observed to have upper critical fields far exceeding the paramagnetic limit. Nevertheless, the $^{77}$Se NMR Knight shift at low fields reveals a decrease in spin susceptibility $χ_s$ consistent with singlet spin pairing. The field dependence of the spin-lattice relaxation rate at 100mK exhibits a sharp crossover (or phase transition) at a field $H_s\sim15$kOe, to a regime where $χ_s$ is close to the normal state value, even though \hc2 $\gg H_s$.

Strongly correlated properties of the thermoelectric cobalt oxide Ca3Co4O9

We have performed both in-plane resistivity, Hall effect and specific heat measurements on the thermoelectric cobalt oxide Ca$_{3}$Co$_{4}$O$_{9}$. Four distinct transport regimes are found as a function of temperature, corresponding to a low temperature insulating one up to $T_{min}\approx $63 K, a strongly correlated Fermi liquid up to $T^*\approx $140 K, with $ρ=ρ_0+AT^2$ and $A\approx 3.63$ $10^{-2} μΩcm/K^{2}$, followed by an incoherent metal with $k_Fl\leq 1$ and a high temperature insulator above T$^{**}\approx $510 K . Specific heat Sommerfeld coefficient $γ= 93$ mJ/(mol.K$^{2}$) confirms a rather large value of the electronic effective mass and fulfils the Kadowaki-Woods ratio $A/γ^2 \approx 0.45$ 10$^{-5}$ $μΩcm.K^2/(mJ^2mol^{-2})$. Resistivity measurements under pressure reveal a decrease of the Fermi liquid transport coefficient A with an increase of $T^*$ as a function of pressure while the product $A(T^*)^2/a$ remains constant and of order $h/e^2$. Both thermodynamic and transport properties suggest a strong renormalization of the quasiparticles coherence scale of order $T^*$ that seems to govern also thermopower.

Universality and Critical Behavior at the Mott transition

We report conductivity measurements of Cr-doped V2O3 using a variable pressure technique. The critical behavior of the conductivity near the Mott-insulator to metal critical endpoint is investigated in detail as a function of pressure and temperature. The critical exponents are determined, as well as the scaling function associated with the equation of state. The universal properties of a liquid-gas transition are found. This is potentially a generic description of the Mott critical endpoint in correlated electron materials.

Mott transition and transport crossovers in the organic compound $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2 Cu[N(CN)_2] Cl$

We have performed in-plane transport measurements on the two-dimensional organic salt $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl. A variable (gas) pressure technique allows for a detailed study of the changes in conductivity through the insulator-to-metal transition. We identify four different transport regimes as a function of pressure and temperature (corresponding to insulating, semi-conducting, ''bad metal'', and strongly correlated Fermi liquid behaviours). Marked hysteresis is found in the transition region, which displays complex physics that we attribute to strong spatial inhomogeneities. Away from the critical region, good agreement is found with a dynamical mean-field calculation of transport properties using the numerical renormalization group technique.

Coexistence of Superconductivity and Spin Density Wave orderings in the organic superconductor (TMTSF)_2PF_6

The phase diagram of the organic superconductor (TMTSF)_2PF_6 has been revisited using transport measurements with an improved control of the applied pressure. We have found a 0.8 kbar wide pressure domain below the critical point (9.43 kbar, 1.2 K) for the stabilisation of the superconducting ground state featuring a coexistence regime between spin density wave (SDW) and superconductivity (SC). The inhomogeneous character of the said pressure domain is supported by the analysis of the resistivity between T_SDW and T_SC and the superconducting critical current. The onset temperature T_SC is practically constant (1.20+-0.01 K) in this region where only the SC/SDW domain proportion below T_SC is increasing under pressure. An homogeneous superconducting state is recovered above the critical pressure with T_SC falling at increasing pressure. We propose a model comparing the free energy of a phase exhibiting a segregation between SDW and SC domains and the free energy of homogeneous phases which explains fairly well our experimental findings.

Influence of Quantum Hall Effect on Linear and Nonlinear Conductivity in the FISDW States of the Organic Conductor (TMTSF)_2PF_6

We report a detailed characterization of quantum Hall effect (QHE) influence on the linear and non-linear resistivity tensor in FISDW phases of the organic conductor (TMTSF)2PF6. We show that the behavior at low electric fields, observed for nominally pure single crystals with different values of the resistivity ratio, is fully consistent with a theoretical model, which takes QHE nature of FISDW and residual quasi-particle density associated with different crystal imperfection levels into account. The non-linearity in longitudinal and diagonal resistivity tensor components observed at large electric fields reconciles preceding contradictory results. Our theoretical model offers a qualitatively good explanation of the observed features if a sliding of the density wave with the concomitant destruction of QHE, switched on above a finite electric field, is taken into account.

From spin-Peierls to superconductivity: (TMTTF)_2PF_6 under high pressure

The nature of the attractive electron-electron interaction, leading to the formation of Cooper-pairs in unconventional superconductors has still to be fully understood and is subject to intensive research. Here we show that the sequence spin-Peierls, antiferromagnetism, superconductivity observed in (TMTTF)_2PF_6 under pressure makes the (TM)_2X phase diagram universal. We argue that the suppression of the spin-Peierls transition under pressure, the close vicinity of antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases at high pressure as well as the existence of critical antiferromagnetic fluctuations above T_c strongly support the intriguing possibility that the interchain exchange of antiferromagnetic fluctuations provides the pairing mechanism required for bound charge carriers.

Mott transition, antiferromagnetism, and unconventional superconductivity in layered organic superconductors

The phase diagram of the layered organic superconductor $κ$-(ET)$_{2}$Cu[N(CN)$_{2}$]Cl has been accurately measured from a combination of $^{1}$H NMR and AC susceptibility techniques under helium gas pressure. The domains of stability of antiferromagnetic and superconducting long-range orders in the pressure {\it vs} temperature plane have been determined. Both phases overlap through a first-order boundary that separates two regions of inhomogeneous phase coexistence. The boundary curve is found to merge with another first order line related to the metal-insulator transition in the paramagnetic region. This transition is found to evolve into a crossover regime above a critical point at higher temperature. The whole phase diagram features a point-like region where metallic, insulating, antiferromagnetic and non s-wave superconducting phases all meet.

The normal phase of quasi-one-dimensional organic superconductors

We review the properties of quasi-one-dimensional organic superconductors: the Bechgaard salts and their sulfur analogs in their normal phase precursor tolong-range order. We go through the main observations made in the normal state of these systems at low magnetic field and tackle the issue of their description under the angles of the Fermi and Luttinger liquid pictures.
