Possibility of s-wave pion condensates in neutron stars revisited

We examine possibilities of pion condensation with zero momentum (s-wave condensation) in neutron stars by using the pion-nucleus optical potential U and the relativistic mean field (RMF) models. We use low-density phenomenological optical potentials parameterized to fit deeply bound pionic atoms or pion-nucleus elastic scatterings. Proton fraction (Y_p) and electron chemical potential (mu_e) in neutron star matter are evaluated in RMF models. We find that the s-wave pion condensation hardly takes place in neutron stars and especially has no chance if hyperons appear in neutron star matter and/or b_1 parameter in U has density dependence.

Dynamically generated resonances

In this talk I report on recent work related to the dynamical generation of baryonic resonances, some made up from pseudoscalar meson-baryon, others from vector meson-baryon and a third type from two meson-one baryon systems. We can establish a correspondence with known baryonic resonances, reinforcing conclusions previously drawn and bringing new light on the nature of some baryonic resonances of higher mass.

Spin-3/2 Pentaquark in QCD Sum Rules

The QCD sum rule method is formulated for the strangeness +1 pentaquark baryon with isospin I=0 and spin-parity J^P = 3/2^\pm. The spin-3/2 states are considered to be narrower than the spin-1/2 ones, and thus may provide a natural explanation for the experimentally observed narrow width of Θ^+. In order to obtain reliable results in QCD sum rule calculations, we stress the importance of establishing a wide Borel window, where convergence of the operator product expansion and sufficient low-mass strength of the spectral function are guaranteed. To this end, we employ the difference of two independent correlators so that the high-energy continuum contribution is suppressed. The stability of the physical quantities against the Borel mass is confirmed within the Borel window. It is found that the sum rule gives positive evidence for the (I, J^P) = (0, 3/2^+) state with a mass of about 1.4 \pm 0.2 GeV, while we cannot extract any evidence for the (0, 3/2^-) state.

Meson and Baryon resonances

In this talk I review recent advances on the structure of the meson and baryon resonances which can be dynamically generated from the interaction of mesons or mesons and baryons. Particular emphasis is put on results involving vector mesons, which bring new light into the nature of some of the observed higher mass mesons and baryons and make predictions for new states.

Formation of eta-mesic nuclei by (pi,N) reaction and N^*(1535) in medium

We calculate formation spectra of eta-nucleus systems in (pi,N) reactions with nuclear targets, which can be performed at existing and/or forthcoming facilities, including J-PARC, in order to investigate eta-nucleus interactions. Based on the N^*(1535) dominance in the eta N system, eta-mesic nuclei are suitable systems for study of in-medium properties of the N^*(1535) baryon resonance, such as reduction of the mass difference of N and N^* in nuclear medium, which affects level structure of the eta and N^*-hole modes. We find that clear information on the in-medium N^*- and eta-nucleus interactions can be obtained through the formation spectra of the eta-mesic nuclei. We also discuss the experimental feasibilities by showing several spectra of (pi,N) reactions calculated with possible experimental settings. Coincident measurements of pi N pairs from the N^* decays in nuclei help us to reduce backgrounds.

Electromagnetic mean squared radii of Lambda(1405) in chiral dynamics

The electromagnetic mean squared radii, _E and _M, of Lambda(1405) are calculated in the chiral unitary model. We describe the excited baryons as dynamically generated resonances in the octet meson and octet baryon scattering. We evaluate values of _E and _M for the Lambda(1405) on the resonance pole and obtain their complex values. We also consider Lambda(1405) obtained by neglecting decay channels. For the latter case, we obtain negative and larger absolute electric mean squared radius than that of typical ground state baryons. This implies that Lambda(1405) has structure that K^- is widely spread around p.

In-medium Pion and Partial Restoration of Chiral Symmetry

The partial restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear medium is investigated in a model independent way by exploiting operator relations in QCD. An exact sum rule is derived for the quark condensate valid for all density. This sum rule is simplified at low density to a new relation with the in-medium quark condensate *, in-medium pion decay constant F_{pi}^t and in-medium pion wave-function renormalization Z_{pi}*. Calculating Z_{pi}*at low density from the iso-scalar pion-nucleon scattering data and relating F_{pi}^t to the isovector pion-nucleus scattering length b_1^*, it is concluded that the enhanced repulsion of the s-wave isovector pion-nucleus interaction observed in the deeply bound pionic atoms directly implies the reduction of the in-medium quark condensate. The knowledge of the in-medium pion mass m_{pi}* is not necessary to reach this conclusion.

Transition form factors of the N*(1535) as a dynamically generated resonance

We discuss how electromagnetic properties provide useful tests of the nature of resonances, and we study these properties for the N*(1535) which appears dynamically generated from the strong interaction of mesons and baryons. Within this coupled channel chiral unitary approach, we evaluate the A_1/2 and S_1/2 helicity amplitudes as a function of Q^2 for the electromagnetic N*(1535) to gamma* N transition. Within the same formalism we evaluate the cross section for the reactions gamma N to eta N. We find a fair agreement for the absolute values of the transition amplitudes, as well as for the Q^2 dependence of the amplitudes, within theoretical and experimental uncertainties discussed in the paper. The ratios obtained between the S_1/2 and A_1/2 for the neutron or proton states of the N*(1535) are in qualitative agreement with experiment and there is agreement on the signs. The same occurs for the ratio of cross sections for the eta photoproduction on neutron and proton targets in the vicinity of the N*(1535) energy. The global results support the idea of this resonance as being dynamically generated, hence, largely built up from meson baryon components. However, the details of the model indicate that an admixture with a genuine quark state is also demanded that could help obtain a better agreement with experimental data.

On the nature of the $Λ(1405)$ and $Λ(1670)$ from their $N_c$ behavior in chiral dynamics

We study the behavior with the number of colors ($N_c$) of the $Λ(1405)$ and $Λ(1670)$ resonances obtained dynamically within the chiral unitary approach. The leading order meson-baryon interaction, used as the kernel of the unitarization procedure, manifests a nontrivial $N_c$ dependence of the flavor SU(3) representation for baryons. As a consequence, the SU(3) singlet (or $\bar{K}N$) component of the $Λ(1405)$ states remains bound in the large $N_c$ limit, while the other components dissolve into the continuum. Introducing explicit SU(3) breaking, we obtain the $N_c$ dependence of the excitation energy, masses and widths of the physical $Λ(1405)$ and $Λ(1670)$ resonance. The $N_c$ behavior of the decay width is found to be different from the general counting rule for a $qqq$ state, indicating the dynamical origin of these resonances.

Electric Mean Squared Radii of Lambda(1405) in Chiral Dynamics

The electric mean squared radii _E of Lambda(1405) are calculated in the chiral unitary model. We describe the Lambda(1405) as a dynamically generated resonance fully in the octet meson and octet baryon scattering. We also consider ``Lambda(1405)'' as a bound state of KbarN. For the later ``Lambda(1405),'' we obtain negative and larger absolute value of electric mean squared radius than that of ordinary baryons, which implies that Lambda(1405) have structure of widely spread K^- around p.

Photo- and Electron-Production of Mesons on Nucleons and Nuclei

In these lectures I will show some results obtained with the chiral unitary approach applied to the photo and electroproduction of mesons. The results for photoproduction of $ηπ^0 p$ and $K^0 π^0 Σ^+$, together with related reactions will be shown, having with common denominator the excitation of the $Δ(1700)$ resonance which is one of those dynamically generated in the chiral unitary approach. Then I will show results obtained for the $e^+ e^- \to ϕf_0(980)$ reaction which reproduce the bulk of the data except for a pronounced peak, giving support to a new mesonic resonance, X(2175). Results will also be shown for the electromagnetic form factors of the $N^*(1535)$ resonance, also dynamically generated in this approach. Finally, I will show some results on the photoproduction of the $ω$ in nuclei, showing that present experimental results claiming a shift of the $ω$ mass in the medium are tied to a particular choice of background and are not conclusive. One the other hand, the same experimental results show unambiguously a huge increase of the $ω$ width in the nuclear medium.

Level crossing of particle-hole and mesonic modes in eta mesic nuclei

We study eta meson properties in the infinite nuclear matter and in atomic nuclei with an emphasis on effects of the eta coupling to N*(1535)--nucleon-hole modes. The N*(1535) resonance, which dominates the low-energy eta-nucleon scattering, can be seen as a chiral partner of the nucleon. The change of the chiral mass gap between the N* and the nucleon in a nuclear medium has an impact on the properties of the eta-nucleus system. If the N*-nucleon mass gap decreases with a density increase (chiral symmetry restoration) the calculations show the existence of the resonance state at the energy about 60 MeV and two bound eta-nucleus states with the binding energies about -80 MeV. These states can have strong effect on predicted cross sections of the ^12C (gamma,p) ^11B reaction with eta-meson production.

In-medium Pions and Partial Restoration of Chiral Symmetry: a model-independent analysis

Exploiting operator relations in QCD, we derive a novel and model-independent formula relating the in-medium quark condensate * to the decay constant F*_t and the wave function renormalization constant Z* of the pion in the nuclear medium. Evaluating Z* at low density from the iso-scalar pion-nucleon scattering data, it is concluded that the enhanced repulsion of the s-wave isovector pion-nucleusinteraction observed in the deeply bound pionic atoms implies directly the reduction of the in-medium quark condensate. The knowlege of the in-medium pion mass is not necessary to reach this conclusion.

Strange magnetic moment of the nucleon and SU(3) breaking: group theoretical approach

An extended group-theoretical approach to magnetic moments of the octet baryons is proposed with the aim of extracting the strange magnetic moment of the nucleon. Special attention is given to flavor SU(3) breaking. In this approach, isoscalar and isovector magnetic moments are treated separately in view of their different behavior under SU(3) breaking. We conclude that the anomalous magnetic moment associated with the flavor singlet current is small. Together with the small isoscalar anomalous magnetic moment of the nucleon, this implies suppression of the strange magnetic moment of the proton which is found to be small and positive, mu^(s) = (0.16 \pm 0.03) mu_N in units of the nuclear magneton.

Formation of mesic nuclei by (γ,p) reactions

We present a theoretical study on formation rates of ηand ωmeson-nucleus systems induced by (γ,p) reactions on nuclear targets at ideal recoilless condition. We find that the smaller distortion effect in the (γ,p) reaction enables us to investigate properties of the mesons created deeply inside nucleus more clearly. We also consider excitation of scalar-isoscalar (σ) mode in nucleus in order to investigate spectral enhancement around two-pion threshold caused by partial restoration of chiral symmetry. We conclude that valuable information of meson-nucleus interactions can be extracted from global structure of the missing mass spectra in the (γ,p) reaction.

Dynamical baryon resonances from chiral unitarity

We report on the latests developments in the field of baryonic resonances generated from the meson-baryon interaction in coupled channels using a chiral unitary approach. The collection of resonances found in different strangeness and isospin sectors can be classified into SU(3) multiplets. The Lambda(1405) emerges as containing the effect of two poles of the scattering amplitude and various reactions that might preferentially select one or the other pole are discussed.

Structure of Lambda(1405) and chiral dynamics

We report on a recent theoretical work on the structure of the Lambda(1405) resonance within a chiral unitary approach, in which the resonance is dynamically generated in meson-baryon scattering. Studying the analytic structure of the scattering amplitude, we have found that there are two poles lying around energies of Lambda(1405) with different widths and couplings to the meson-baryon states. We discuss reactions to conform the double pole structure in experiment and elastic K^- p scattering at low energies.

Detailed Analysis of the Chiral Unitary Model for Meson-Baryon Scattering with Flavor SU(3) Breaking Effects

We study s-wave meson-baryon scattering using the chiral unitary model. We consider $1/2^{-}$ baryon resonances as quasibound states of the low lying mesons ($π,K,η$) and baryons ($N,Λ,Σ,Ξ$). In previous works, the subtraction constants which appear in loop integrals were found to largely depend on the channels, and it was necessary to fit these constants to reproduce the data. In order to extend this model to all channels with fewer parameters, we introduce flavor SU(3) breaking interactions in the framework of chiral perturbation theory. It is found, however, that the observed SU(3) breaking in meson-baryon scattering cannot be explained by the present SU(3) breaking interactions. The role and importance of the subtraction constants in the present framework are discussed.
