Scaling behaviour at the $N_t=6$ chiral phase transition for 2-flavour lattice QCD with massless staggered quarks, and an irrelevant 4-fermion interaction

We have simulated lattice QCD with 2 flavours of massless staggered quarks. An irrelevant chiral 4-fermion interaction was added to the standard quark action to allow us to simulate at zero quark mass. Thermodynamics was studied on lattices of temporal extent 6. Clear evidence for a second order chiral transition was observed and the critical exponents $β_{mag}$, $δ$, $ν$ and $γ_{mag}$ were measured. These exponents did not agree with those expected by standard universality arguments. They were, however, consistent with tricritical behaviour. The $π$ and $σ$ screening masses were measured and showed clear evidence for chiral symmetry restoration at this transition.

Diquark Condensation at Nonzero Chemical Potential and Temperature

SU(2) lattice gauge theory with four flavors of quarks is studied at nonzero chemical potential $μ$ and temperature $T$ by computer simulation and Effective Lagrangian techniques. Simulations are done on $8^4$, $8^3 \times 4$ and $12^3 \times 6$ lattices and the diquark condensate, chiral order parameter, Wilson line, fermion energy and number densities are measured. Simulations at a fixed, nonzero quark mass provide evidence for a tricritical point in the $μ$-$T$ plane associated with diquark condensation. For low $T$, increasing $μ$ takes the system through a line of second order phase transitions to a diquark condensed phase. Increasing $T$ at high $μ$, the system passes through a line of first order transitions from the diquark phase to the quark-gluon plasma phase. Using Effective Lagrangians we estimate the position of the tricritical point and ascribe its existence to trilinear couplings that increase with $μ$ and $T$.

Two-colour QCD at finite fundamental quark-number density and related theories

We are simulating SU(2) Yang-Mills theory with four flavours of dynamical quarks in the fundamental representation of SU(2) `colour' at finite chemical potential, mu for quark number, as a model for QCD at finite baryon number density. In particular we observe that for mu large enough this theory undergoes a phase transition to a state with a diquark condensate which breaks quark-number symmetry. In this phase we examine the spectrum of light scalar and pseudoscalar bosons and see evidence for the Goldstone boson associated with this spontaneous symmetry breaking. This theory is closely related to QCD at finite chemical potential for isospin, a theory which we are now studying for SU(3) colour.

Tricritical scaling at the N_t=6 chiral phase transition for 2 flavour lattice QCD with staggered quarks

We have simulated lattice QCD directly in the chiral limit of zero quark mass by adding an additional, irrelevant 4-fermion interaction to the standard action. Using lattices having temporal extent of six and spatial extents of twelve and eighteen, we find that the theory with 2 massless staggered quark flavors has a second order finite temperature phase transition. The critical exponents $β_{mag}$, $δ$ and $ν$ are measured and favour tricritical behaviour over that expected by universality arguments. The pion screening mass is consistent with zero below the transition, but is degenerate with the nonzero $σ(f_0)$ mass above the transition, indicating the restoration of chiral symmetry.

High temperature meson propagators with domain-wall quarks

We study the chiral properties of domain-wall quarks at high temperatures on an ensemble of quenched configurations. Low lying eigenmodes of the Dirac operator are calculated and used to check the extent to which the Atiyah-Singer index theorem is obeyed on lattices with finite $N_5$. We calculate the connected and disconnected screening propagators for the lowest mass scalar and pseudoscalar mesons in the sectors of different topological charge and note that they behave as expected. Separating out the would-be zero eigenmodes enables us to accurately estimate the disconnected propagators with far less effort than would be needed otherwise.

Domain wall fermions at finite temperature

We investigate the properties of domain wall fermions on a set of quenched configurations at non-zero temperature. In particular, we compute the low lying eigenvalues of the DWF operator and study their relation with topology, level crossings and chiral symmetry breaking. We also measure the screening correlators and discuss the dependence on the extent of the extra dimension and the quark mass.

Improved staggered quark actions with reduced flavour symmetry violations for lattice QCD

We introduce a new class of actions for staggered quarks in lattice QCD which significantly reduce flavour symmetry violations in the pion mass spectrum. An action introduced by the MILC collaboration for the same purpose is seen to be a special case. We discus how such actions arise from a systematic attempt to reduce flavour symmetry violations in the weak coupling limit. It is shown that for quenched lattice QCD at 6/g^2=5.7, representative actions of this class give a considerable reduction in flavour symmetry violation over the standard staggered action, and a significant reduction over what is achieved by the MILC action.

Thermodynamics of Lattice QCD with 2 Quark Flavours: Chiral Symmetry and Topology

We have studied the restoration of chiral symmetry in lattice QCD at the finite temperature transition from hadronic matter to a quark-gluon plasma. By measuring the screening masses of flavour singlet and non-singlet meson excitations, we have seen evidence that, although flavour chiral symmetry is restored at this transition, flavour singlet (U(1)) axial symmetry is not. We conclude that this indicates that instantons continue to play an important role in the quark-gluon plasma phase.

Thermodynamics of Lattice QCD with Chiral 4-Fermion Interactions

We have studied lattice QCD with an additional, irrelevant 4-fermion interaction having a U(1)xU(1) chiral symmetry, at finite temperatures. Adding this 4-fermion term allowed us to work at zero quark mass, which would have otherwise been impossible. The theory with 2 massless staggered quark flavours appears to have a first order finite temperature phase transition at N_t=4 for the value of 4-fermion coupling we have chosen, in contrast to what is expected for 2-flavour QCD. The pion screening mass is seen to vanish below this transition, only to become massive and degenerate with the sigma (f_0) above this transition where the chiral symmetry is restored, as is seen by the vanishing of the chiral condensate.

Topology, fermionic zero modes and flavor singlet correlators in finite temperature QCD

We compute the screening correlators in the sigma and eta' flavor singlet channels in finite temperature QCD with 2 light quark flavors. Together with the correlators in the pi and delta channels, these are used to discuss several issues related to symmetry restoration and the nature of the QCD phase transition. Our calculations span a range of temperature extending from approximately 125 MeV to 170 MeV and are carried out in the context of a staggered fermion formulation on a 16^3x8 lattice. In addition to the computation at a fixed quark mass (am_q=0.00625), we discuss the issue of the chiral limit. After careful consideration of the zero-mode shift lattice artefact, we present rather strong (topological) arguments in favor of the non-restoration of U_A(1) at T_c.

Improving the staggered quark action to reduce flavour symmetry violations

We investigate a class of actions for lattice QCD with staggered quarks aimed at reducing the flavour symmetry violations associated with using staggered fermions. These actions replace the gauge field link fields in the quark action with covariantly smeared fields. As such they are an extension of actions considered by the MILC collaboration. We show that such actions systematically reduce flavour symmetry violations in the weak coupling limit. Using the mass splitting between Goldstone and non-Goldstone pions as a measure of flavour symmetry violations we find that these actions have considerably less flavour symmetry violations than the standard staggered action, and represent an improvement on what can be achieved with the MILC action, on quenched configurations with $β=5.7$.

Thermodynamics of lattice QCD with two light quark flavours on a 16^3 x 8 lattice II

We have extended our earlier simulations of the high temperature behaviour of lattice QCD with two light flavours of staggered quarks on a $16^3 \times 8$ lattice to lower quark mass (m_q=0.00625). The transition from hadronic matter to a quark-gluon plasma is observed at $6/g^2=5.49(2)$ corresponding to a temperature of $T_c \approx 140$MeV. We present measurements of observables which probe the nature of the quark-gluon plasma and serve to distinguish it from hadronic matter. Although the transition is quite abrupt, we have seen no indications that it is first order.

We calculate the NRQCD matrix elements for the decays of the lowest-lying S- and P-wave states of charmonium and bottomonium in quenched lattice QCD. We also compute the one-loop relations between the lattice and continuum matrix elements.

Manifestations of the axial anomaly in finite temperature QCD

We compute the flavor singlet meson correlators and screening masses in quenched and $N_f=2$ QCD at $N_t=8$. The consequences of our results for the realization of the $U_A(1)$ symmetry at finite T are discussed and an interpretation of our measurements in terms of the behaviour of the low lying fermionic modes is proposed.

QCD with chiral 4-fermion interactions ($χ$QCD)

Lattice QCD with staggered quarks is augmented by the addition of a chiral 4-fermion interaction. The Dirac operator is now non-singular at $m_q=0$, decreasing the computing requirements for light quark simulations by at least an order of magnitude. We present preliminary results from simulations at finite and zero temperatures for $m_q=0$, with and without gauge fields.

Quarkonium Decay Matrix Elements from Quenched Lattice QCD

We calculate the long-distance matrix elements for the decays of the lowest-lying S- and P-wave states of charmonium and bottomonium in quenched lattice QCD, using a nonrelativistic formulation for the heavy quarks. (The short-distance coefficients are known from perturbation theory.) In particular, we present the first calculation from QCD first principles of the color-octet contribution to P-wave decay---a contribution that is absent in potential models. We also give the relations between the lattice matrix elements and their continuum counterparts through one-loop order in perturbation theory.
