Jet-Tagged Back-Scattering Photons For Quark Gluon Plasma Tomography

Several sources of direct photons are known to contribute to the total photon yield in high energy nuclear collisions. All of these photons carry characteristic and important information on the initial nuclei or the hot and dense fireball created in the collision. We investigate the possibility to separate photons from back-scattering of high momentum quarks off quark gluon plasma from other sources. Their unique kinematics can be utilized through high energy jet triggers on the away-side. We discuss the basic idea and estimate the feasibility of such a measurement at RHIC and LHC.

Transverse Energy per Charged Particle and Freeze-Out Criteria in Heavy-Ion Collisions

In relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions the transverse energy per charged particle, E_T/N_ch, increases rapidly with beam energy and remains approximately constant at about 800 MeV for beam energies from SPS to RHIC. It is shown that the hadron resonance gas model describes the energy dependence, as well as the lack of centrality dependence, qualitatively. The values of E_T/N_ch are related to the chemical freeze-out criterium E/N about 1 GeV valid for primordial hadrons.

Centrality Dependence of Direct Photons in Au+Au Collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV

We calculate the spectra of high energy photons emitted in relativistic Au+Au collisions for various centralities and compare to data recently collected at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider by the PHENIX collaboration. Our results for photons from primary hard scatterings and photons from interactions of jets with the medium are consistent with the measurements of neutral pion and direct photon production in p+p collisions and give a good description of direct photon spectra measured in Au+Au collisions. The contribution of photons from jet-to-photon conversion in the medium can be as large as the photon yield from hard scatterings in the momentum range p_T = 2...6 GeV/c. We show that this novel mechanism is not ruled out by any existing data.

Initiative in Nuclear Theory at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre

We recall the path breaking contributions of the nuclear theory group of the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre, Kolkata. From a beginning of just one person in 1970s, the group has steadily developed into a leading group in the country today, with seminal contributions to almost the entire range of nuclear physics, viz., low energy nuclear reactions, nuclear structure, deep inelastic collisions, fission, liquid to gas phase transitions, nuclear matter, equation of state, mass formulae, neutron stars, relativistic heavy ion collisions, medium modification of hadron properties, quark gluon plasma, and cosmology of early universe.

High energy photons from passage of jets through quark gluon plasma

We calculate the production of high energy photons from Compton scattering and annihilation of a quark jet passing through a quark gluon plasma produced in a relativistic heavy ion collision. The contributions are large and reflect the momentum distribution of the jets and the initial conditions of the plasma.

Large mass dileptons from the passage of jets through quark gluon plasma

We calculate the emission of large mass dileptons originating from the annihilation of quark jets passing through quark gluon plasma. Considering central collisions of heavy nuclei at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies, we find that the yield due to the jet-plasma interaction gets progressively larger as the collision energy increases. We find it to be negligible at SPS energies, of the order of the Drell-Yan contribution and much larger than the normal thermal yield at RHIC energies and up to a factor of ten larger than the Drell-Yan contribution at LHC energies. An observation of this new dilepton source would confirm the occurrence of jet-plasma interactions and of conditions suitable for jet-quenching to take place.

Parton rescattering and screening in Au+Au collisions at RHIC

We study the microscopic dynamics of quarks and gluons in relativistic heavy ion collisions in the framework of the Parton Cascade Model. We use lowest order perturbative QCD cross sections with fixed lower momentum cutoff p_0. We calculate the time-evolution of the Debye-screening mass for Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV per nucleon pair. The screening mass is used to determine a lower limit for the allowed range of p_0. We also determine the energy density reached through hard and semi-hard processes at RHIC, obtain a lower bound for the rapidity density of charged hadrons produced by semihard interactions, and analyze the extent of perturbative rescattering among partons.

Evolution of Baryon Rich Quark-Gluon Plasma and radiation of Single Photons

The (3+1) dimensional expansion of the quark gluon plasma (QGP) produced at finite baryon density has been studied using relativistic hydrodynamical approach. The pressure functional of the equation of state (EoS) has been determined for the interacting nuclear matter with mesons exchange. The EoS has been used to solve hydrodynamical equations using RHLLE algorithm. The space time expansion of the plasma has been studied for the cases of SPS energy and RHIC energy both at finite baryon density and for a hypothetical case of SPS energy at zero baryon density. The space-time evolution is slowed and the life times of QGP and mixed phases are shortened in the presence of finite baryon density. The space time integrated total photon yields have been estimated by convoluting the static emission rates with the space time expansion of the plasma. It has been shown that the total photon yield at zero rapidity is not significantly affected by the baryon density for SPS energy. The total photon yield is unaffected by the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect at SPS energy at zero baryon density, as the quark matter contribution to photon yield is less compared to hadronic matter.

Effect of colour singletness of quark-gluon plasma in quark-hadron phase transition

Consequences of the constraint of SU(3) colour singletness of quark-gluon plasma are studied. This restriction increases the free energy barrier for the formation of hadronic bubble in supercooled phase and influences significantly the dynamics of the initial stage of quark-hadron phase transition. It also introduces terms dependent on the volume occupied by the plasma in the energy density and the pressure. These modifactions vanish in the limit of an infinite volume. The last stage of the hadronization of the QGP likely to be formed in relativistic heavy ion collisions is necessarily characterized by a decreasing volume containing the quark matter, and thus these corrections become important. The nucleation of plasma droplets at AGS energies is also seen to be strongly affected by the requirement of colour singletness, and the choice of prefactor.

Radiative Energy-Loss of Heavy Quarks in a Quark-Gluon Plasma

We estimate the radiative energy-loss of heavy quarks, produced from the initial fusion of partons, while propagating in a quark-gluon plasma which may be formed in the wake of relativistic heavy ion collisions. We find that the radiative energy-loss for heavy quarks is larger than the collisional energy-loss for all energies. We point out the consequences on possible signals of the quark-gluon plasma.

Expanding Quark-Gluon Plasmas: Transverse Flow, Chemical Equilibration and Electromagnetic Radiation

We investigate the chemical equilibration of the parton distributions in collisions of two heavy nuclei. We use initial conditions obtained from a self-screened parton cascade calculation and, for comparison, from the HIJING model. We consider a one-dimensional, as well as a three-dimensional expansion of the parton plasma and find that the onset of the transverse expansion impedes the chemical equilibration. At energies of 100 GeV/nucleon, the results for one-dimensional and three-dimensional expansion are quite similar except at large values of the transverse radius. At energies of several TeV/nucleon, the plasma initially approaches chemical equilibrium, but then is driven away from it, when the transverse velocity gradients develop. We find that the total parton multiplicity density remains essentially unaffected by the flow, but the individual concentrations of quarks, antiquarks, and gluons are sensitive to the transverse flow. The consequences of the flow are also discernible in the transverse momenta of the partons and in the lepton pair spectra, where the flow causes a violation of the so-called $M_T$ scaling.

A Global Test of QCD Theories for Direct Photon Production

Direct photon production data at fixed target and collider experiments from $pp$ and $\bar{p}p$ collisions are analysed in NLO QCD. The results are grouped into three sets having $\sqrt{s}=20-30$ GeV, 630 GeV and 1.8 TeV. It is seen that at the lowest energies considered, the theory systematically underpredicts the results for all the values of the transverse momentum. At the intermediate energy of the UA2 experiment, the data are more accurately described at high $p_T$, and at the highest collider energies no significant underprediction is seen even at low $p_T$, when using recent structure functions as measured at HERA.

PRODUCTION OF DRELL--YAN PAIRS IN HIGH ENERGY NUCLEON--NUCLEON COLLISIONS

We compute cross sections for the Drell-Yan process in N--N collisions at next-to-leading order in $α_s$. The mass, rapidity, transverse momentum, and angular dependence of these cross sections are presented. An estimate of higher order corrections is obtained from next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of the mass distribution. We compare the results with some of the existing data to show the quality of the agreement between calculations and data. We present predictions for energies which will become available at the RHIC and LHC colliders. Uncertainties in these predictions due to choices of scale, scheme and parton distribution are discussed.

On the $M_T$ scaling of dilepton spectra in high energy heavy ion collisions

The so-called $M_T$ scaling for dilepton spectra at RHIC energies is examined. It is seen that a proper accounting of the complete set of dilepton producing processes forces us to abandon the proposed scaling around $M_T$ = 2.6 GeV, which has been put forward as a possible signature of the presence of quark-matter. Any substantial transverse expansion in the QGP phase itself will also offset this scaling behaviour. The rates of lepton pair production are time--integrated in Bjorken hydrodynamics and the different sources are compared against each other.
