New derivation of the cluster cumulant formula

The cluster cumulant formula of Kubo is derived by appealing only to elementary properties of subsets and binomial coefficients. It is shown to be a binomial transform of the grand potential. Extensivity is proven without introducing cumulants. A combinatorial inversion is used to reformulate the expansion in the activity to one in occupation probabilities, which explicitly control the convergence. The classical virial expansion is recovered to third order as an example.

Central peak in the pseudogap of high T_c superconductors

We study the effect of antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations in the three-band Emery model, with respect to the experimental situation in weakly underdoped and optimally doped BSCCO. In the vicinity of the vH singularity of the conduction band there appears a central peak in the middle of a pseudogap, which is in an antiadiabatic regime, insensitive to the time scale of the mechanism responsible for the pseudogap. We find a quantum low-temperature regime corresponding to experiment, in which the pseudogap is created by zero-point motion of the magnons, as opposed to the usual semiclassical derivation, where it is due to a divergence of the magnon occupation number. Detailed analysis of the spectral functions along the (pi,0)-(pi,pi) line show significant agreement with experiment, both qualitative and, in the principal scales, quantitative. The observed slight approaching-then-receding of both the wide and narrow peaks with respect to the Fermi energy is also reproduced. We conclude that optimally doped BSCCO has a well-developed pseudogap of the order of 1000 K. This is only masked by the narrow antiadiabatic peak, which provides a small energy scale, unrelated to the AF scale, and primarily controlled by the position of the chemical potential.

Fermion kinetics in the Falicov-Kimball limit of the three-band Emery model

The three-band Emery model is reduced to a single-particle quantum model of Falicov-Kimball type, by allowing only up-spins to hop, and forbidding double occupation by projection. It is used to study the effects of geometric obstruction on mobile fermions in thermodynamic equilibrium. For low hopping overlap, there appears a plateau in the entropy, due to charge correlations, and related to real-space disorder. For large overlap, the equilibrium thermopower susceptibility remains anomalous, with a sign opposite to the one predicted from the single-particle density of states. The heat capacity and non-Fermi liquid response are discussed in the context of similar results in the literature. All results are obtained by evaluation of an effective single-particle free-energy operator in closed form. The method to obtain this operator is described in detail.

Hysteresis in an Ising model with mobile bonds

Hysteresis is studied in a disordered Ising model in which diffusion of antiferromagnetic bonds is allowed in addition to spin flips. Saturation behavior changes to a figure-eight loop when diffusion is introduced. The upper and lower fields delimiting the figure-eight are determined by the Hamiltonian, while its surface and the crossing point depend on the temperature and details of the dynamics. The main avalanche is associated with the disappearance of hidden order. Some experimental observations of figure-eight anomalies are discussed. It is argued they are a signal of a transient rearrangement of domain couplings, characteristic of amorphous and/or magnetically soft samples, and similar to evolution of kinetic glasses.

The Gutzwiller wave function as a disentanglement prescription

The Gutzwiller variational wave function is shown to correspond to a particular disentanglement of the thermal evolution operator, and to be physically consistent only in the temperature range U<<kT<<E_F, the Fermi energy of the non-interacting system. The correspondence is established without using the Gutzwiller approximation. It provides a systematic procedure for extending the ansatz to the strong-coupling regime. This is carried out to infinite order in a dominant class of commutators. The calculation shows that the classical idea of suppressing double occupation is replaced at low temperatures by a quantum RVB-like condition, which involves phases at neighboring sites. Low-energy phenomenologies are discussed in the light of this result.

Pseudogap and Central Peak in the Emery Model

The effect of antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations is studied in the framework of the three-band (Emery) model, with respect to experiments in BSCCO. We study the pseudogap regime with a central peak. Detailed dispersions of quasiparticle peaks show that one can simultaneously fit Fermi surfaces and ARPES leading-edge energy scales. The band parameter regime is a strong-coupling one: marked renormalization of the copper-oxygen overlap, making it smaller than the oxygen-oxygen overlap, while the copper-oxygen energy splitting is the largest of the three. The same regime was found previously in a zeroth-order fit of Fermi surfaces. The inclusion of AF correlations in a weak-coupling approach resolves the only qualitative discrepancy of the zeroth-order mean-field slave-boson calculation with experiment: it is argued that the observed large flat region of the dispersion around the vH point is due to the very non-dispersive central peak in the X-M direction. The sudden increase of the experimental one-particle dispersion in the X-M direction is explained by the quasiparticle strength shifting to the upper wing of the magnetic pseudogap, as one moves further away from the X (van Hove) point. Near it, the lower wing is predicted to be observed in the X-M direction, in addition to the narrow central peak, giving rise to a two-peaked structure below the Fermi level, as found experimentally.

Entropy saturation and the Brinkmann-Rice transition in a random-tiling model

The parameter regime in which a Brinkmann-Rice (BR) transition appears near half-filling is investigated for a model of of one kind of electrons traversing a plane randomly tiled with CuO_4 molecules, simulating the copper-oxide planes of high-T_c superconductors. As the hole doping is increased, the BR transition evolves continuously into a state characterized by Kauzmann-like plateaus in the entropy vs. temperature curves. Despite clear analogies with the glass transition, these are equilibrium properties of the model. This is because the spin interactions, responsible for ordering in real space, are not included.

Vitrification in a 2D Ising model with mobile bonds

A bond-disordered two-dimensional Ising model is used to simulate Kauzmann's mechanism of vitrification in liquids, by a Glauber Monte Carlo simulation. The rearrangement of configurations is achieved by allowing impurity bonds to hop to nearest neighbors at the same rate as the spins flip. For slow cooling, the theoretical minimum energy configuration is approached, characterized by an amorphous distribution of locally optimally arranged impurity bonds. Rapid cooling to low temperatures regularly finds bond configurations of higher energy, which are both a priori rare and severely restrictive to spin movement, providing a simple realization of kinetic vitrification. A supercooled liquid regime is also found, and characterized by a change in sign of the field derivative of the spin-glass susceptibility at a finite temperature.

Difference between microscopic and effective overlaps in the copper-oxide planes of high-Tc superconductors

We investigate parametrizations required to reproduce observed Fermi surfaces of overdoped and slightly underdoped LSCO in two different models. One is the standard three-band saddle-point slave boson (SB). The other is a model of CuO4 `molecules' randomly tiled in the plane, emphasizing the distinction between the local overlap, always the full (bare) one, and the effective overlap, connected with the reduced bandwidth due to the random tiling (RT). We conclude this distinction is physically significant for underdoped, but not for overdoped LSCO. This is consistent with the observed open Fermi surfaces being due to correlation effects.

Quantum phase transition in a random-tiling model

The analogue of a Mott-Hubbard transition is discussed, which appears at an incommensurate filling in a model of a two-dimensional plane, randomly tiled with CuO_4 `molecules', simulating the copper-oxide planes of high-T_c superconductors. It is shown to be a quantum phase transition, which can be crossed either in doping, at a fixed hopping overlap t, or in t, when the doping is fixed in a certain range below half-filling. It is first-order, closely analogous to a liquid-gas transition.
