A new identity for the sum of products of generalized basic hypergeometric functions

We prove a duality relation for generalized basic hypergeometric functions. It forms a $q$-extension of a recent result of the second and the third named authors and generalizes both a $q$-hypergeometric identity due to the third named author (jointly with Feng and Yang) and a recent identity for the Heine's ${}_2\phi_{1}$ function due to Suzuki. We further explore various consequences of our identity leading to several presumably new multi-term relations for both terminating and non-terminating generalized basic hypergeometric series. Moreover, we give confluent versions of our results and furnish a number of explicit examples.

Representations of hypergeometric functions for arbitrary parameter values and their use

Integral representations of hypergeometric functions proved to be a very useful tool for studying their properties. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we extend the known representations to arbitrary values of the parameters and show that the extended representations can be interpreted as examples of regularizations of integrals containing Meijer's $G$ function. Second, we give new applications of both, known and extended representations. These include: inverse factorial series expansion for the Gauss type function, new information about zeros of the Bessel and Kummer type functions, connection with radial positive definite functions and generalizations of Luke's inequalities for the Kummer and Gauss type functions.

Some new facts concerning the delta neutral H function of Fox

In this paper we find several new properties of a class of Fox's H functions which we call delta neutral. In particular, we find an expansion in the neighborhood of finite nonzero singularity and give new Mellin transform formulas under a special restriction on parameters. The last result is applied to prove a conjecture regarding the representing measure for gamma ratio in Bernstein's theorem. Further, we find the weak limit of measures expressed in terms of the H function which furnishes a regularization method for integrals containing the delta neutral zero-balanced function of Fox. We apply this result to extend a recently discovered integral equation to zero-balanced case. In the last section of the paper we consider a reduced form of this integral equation for Meijer's G function. This leads to certain expansions believed to be new even in the case of the Gauss hypergeometric function.

Two-sided bounds for the logarithmic capacity of multiple intervals

Potential theory on the complement of a subset of the real axis attracts a lot of attention both in function theory and applied sciences. The paper discusses one aspect of the theory - the logarithmic capacity of closed subsets of the real line. We give simple but precise upper and lower bounds for the logarithmic capacity of multiple intervals and a lower bound valid also for closed sets comprising an infinite number of intervals. Using some known methods to compute the exact values of capacity we demonstrate graphically how our estimates compare with them. The main machinery behind our results are separating transformation and dissymmetrization developed by V.N. Dubinin and a version of the latter by K. Haliste as well as some classical symmetrization and projection result for logarithmic capacity. The results of the paper improve some previous achievements by A.Yu. Solynin and K. Shiefermayr.

Log-convexity and log-concavity of hypergeometric-like functions

We find sufficient conditions for log-convexity and log-concavity for the functions of the forms $a\mapsto\sum{f_k}(a)_kx^k$, $a\mapsto\sum{f_k}Γ(a+k)x^k$ and $a\mapsto\sum{f_k}x^k/(a)_k$. The most useful examples of such functions are generalized hypergeometric functions. In particular, we generalize the Turán inequality for the confluent hypergeometric function recently proved by Barnard, Gordy and Richards and log-convexity results for the same function recently proved by Baricz. Besides, we establish a reverse inequality which complements naturally the inequality of Barnard, Gordy and Richards. Similar results are established for the Gauss and the generalized hypergeometric functions. A conjecture about monotonicity of a quotient of products of confluent hypergeometric functions is made.

Inequalities and monotonicity of ratios for generalized hypergeometric function

We find two-sided inequalities for the generalized hypergeometric function of the form ${_{q+1}}F_{q}(-x)$ with positive parameters restricted by certain additional conditions. Both lower and upper bounds agree with the value of ${_{q+1}}F_{q}(-x)$ at the endpoints of positive semi-axis and are asymptotically precise at one of the endpoints. The inequalities are derived from a theorem asserting the monotony of the quotient of two generalized hypergeometric functions with shifted parameters. The proofs hinge on a generalized Stieltjes representation of the generalized hypergeometric function. This representation also provides yet another method to deduce the second Thomae relation for ${_{3}F_{2}}(1)$ and leads to an integral representations of ${_{4}F_{3}}(x)$ in terms of the Appell function $F_3$. In the last section of the paper we list some open questions and conjectures.

An approximation for zero-balanced Appell function $F_1$ near $(1,1)$

We suggest an approximation for the zero-balanced Appell hypergeometric function $F_1$ near the singular point $(1,1)$. Our approximation can be viewed as a generalization of Ramanujan's approximation for zero-balanced ${_2F_1}$ and is expressed in terms of ${_3F_2}$. We find an error bound and prove some basic properties of the suggested approximation which reproduce the similar properties of the Appell function. Our approximation reduces to the approximation of Carlson-Gustafson when the Appell function reduces to the first incomplete elliptic integral.

Square summability with geometric weight for classical orthogonal expansions

Let $f_k$ be the $k$-th Fourier coefficient of a function $f$ in terms of the orthonormal Hermite, Laguerre or Jacobi polynomials. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on $f$ for the inequality $\sum_{k}|f_k|^2θ^k<\infty$ to hold with $θ>1$. As a by-product new orthogonality relations for the Hermite and Laguerre polynomials are found. The basic machinery for the proofs is provided by the theory of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces.

Capacity of a condenser whose plates are circular arcs

We find an asymptotic formula for the conformal capacity of a plane condenser both plate of which are concentric circular arcs as the distance between them vanishes. This result generalizes the formula for the capacity of parallel linear plate condenser found by Simonenko and Chekulaeva in 1972 and sheds light on the problem of finding an asymptotic formula for the capacity of condenser whose plates are arbitrary parallel curves. This problem was posed and partially solved by R. Kühnau in 1998.

Asymptotic approximations for the first incomplete elliptic integral near logarithmic singularity

We find two convergent series expansions for Legendre's first incomplete elliptic integral $F(λ,k)$ in terms of recursively computed elementary functions. Both expansions are valid at every point of the unit square $0<λ,k<1$. Truncated expansions yield asymptotic approximations for $F(λ,k)$ as $λ$ and/or $k$ tend to unity, including the case when logarithmic singularity $λ=k=1$ is approached from any direction. Explicit error bounds are given at every order of approximation. For the reader's convenience we present explicit expressions for low-order approximations and numerical examples to illustrate their accuracy. Our derivation is based on rearrangements of some known double series expansions, hypergeometric summation algorithms and inequalities for hypergeometric functions.

Series expansions for the third incomplete elliptic integral via partial fraction decompositions

We find convergent double series expansions for Legendre's third incomplete elliptic integral valid in overlapping subdomains of the unit square. Truncated expansions provide asymptotic approximations in the neighbourhood of the logarithmic singularity $(1,1)$ if one of the variables approaches this point faster than the other. Each approximation is accompanied by an error bound. For a curve with an arbitrary slope at $(1,1)$ our expansions can be rearranged into asymptotic expansions depending on a point on the curve. For reader's convenience we give some numeric examples and explicit expressions for low-order approximations.
