A Large-Scale Pad-Sensor Based Prototype of the Silicon Tungsten Electromagnetic Calorimeter for the Forward Direction in ALICE at LHC

We constructed a large-scale electromagnetic calorimeter prototype as a part of the Forward Calorimeter upgrade project (FoCal) for the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The prototype, also known as ``Mini FoCal'', consists of 20 layers of silicon pad sensors and tungsten alloy plates with printed circuit boards and readout electronics. The constructed detector was tested at the test beam facility of the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) at CERN. We obtain an energy resolution of about 4.3% for electron beams at both 150 and 250 GeV/$c$, which is consistent with realistic detector response simulations. Longitudinal profiles of electromagnetic shower were also measured and found to agree with the simulations. The same prototype detector was installed in the ALICE experimental area about 7.5m away from the interaction point. It was used to measure inclusive electromagnetic cluster energy distributions and neutral-pion candidate invariant mass distributions for pseudo-rapidity of $η$=3.7-4.5 in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV at LHC. The measured distributions in different $η$ regions are similar to those obtained from PYTHIA simulations.

Design and Performance of a Silicon Tungsten Calorimeter Prototype Module and the Associated Readout

We describe the details of a silicon-tungsten prototype electromagnetic calorimeter module and associated readout electronics. Detector performance for this prototype has been measured in test beam experiments at the CERN PS and SPS accelerator facilities in 2015/16. The results are compared to those in Monte Carlo Geant4 simulations. This is the first real-world demonstration of the performance of a custom ASIC designed for fast, lower-power, high-granularity applications.

Investigation of the Magnetic Model in Multiferroic NdFe$_{3}$(BO$_{3}$)$_{4}$ by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

We performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of NdFe$_{3}$($^{11}$BO$_{3}$)$_{4}$ to explore the magnetic excitations, to establish the underlying Hamiltonian, and to reveal the detailed nature of hybridization between the 4$f$ and 3$d$ magnetism. The observed spectra exhibiting a couple of key features, i.e., anti-crossing of Nd- and Fe-excitations and anisotropy gap at the antiferromagnetic zone center, are explained by the magnetic model including spin interaction in the framework of weakly-coupled Fe$^{3+}$ chains, interaction between the Fe$^{3+}$ and Nd$^{3+}$ moments, and single-ion anisotropy derived from Nd$^{3+}$ crystal field. The combination of the measurements and calculations reveals that the hybridization between 4$f$ and 3$d$ magnetism propagates the local magnetic anisotropy of the Nd$^{3+}$ ion to the Fe$^{3+}$ network, resulting in the bulk structure of multiferroics.

Experimental confirmation of spin gap in antiferromagnetic alternating spin-3/2 chain substances RCrGeO5 (R = Y or 154Sm) by inelastic neutron scattering experiments

A spin-singlet ground state with a spin gap has been discovered in antiferromagnetic spin chain substances when the spin value is 1/2, 1 or 2. To find spin gap (singlet-triplet) excitations in spin-3/2 chain substances, we performed inelastic neutron scattering and magnetization measurements on {\it R}CrGeO$_5$ ({\it R} = Y or Sm) powders. As expected, we observed spin gap excitations and the dispersion relation of the lowest magnetic excitations. We proved that the spin system of Cr$^{3+}$ was an antiferromagnetic alternating spin-3/2 chain.

Neutron Brillouin scattering with pulsed spallation neutron source - spin-wave excitations from ferromagnetic powder samples -

Neutron Brillouin scattering (NBS) method was developed using a pulsed spallation neutron source, and the feasibility of NBS was demonstrated by observing ferromagnetic spin waves in La$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$ and SrRuO$_3$ powders. Gapless spin-wave excitations were observed in La$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$, which were continuously extended to the lower scattering vector $Q$ from previous results using single crystals. The novel result is a well-defined quadratic $Q$ dependence in the spin-wave dispersion curve with a large energy gap in SrRuO$_3$ indicating robust spin-orbit coupling.

Effect of cation size variance on spin and orbital order in Eu$_{1-x}$(La$_{0.254}$Y$_{0.746}$)$_{x}$VO$_3$

We have investigated the $R$-ion ($R$ = rare earth or Y) size variance effect on spin/orbital order in Eu$_{1-x}$(La$_{0.254}$Y$_{0.746}$)$_{x}$VO$_3$. The size variance disturbs one-dimensional orbital correlation in $C$-type spin/$G$-type orbital ordered states and suppresses this spin/orbital order. In contrast, it stabilizes the other spin/orbital order. The results of neutron and resonant X-ray scattering denote that in the other ordered phase, the spin/orbital patterns are $G$-type/$C$-type, respectively.
