Melting upon cooling in a quantum magnet

Heating enhances thermal fluctuations and typically leads to melting of solids, but in exceptional cases, heating can also cause liquids to solidify. The paradigm of this counterintuitive phenomenon is solidification of liquid $^3$He upon increasing temperature, known as the Pomeranchuk effect. Here we show that such inverse melting also appears in quantum magnetism. We find that, on cooling, the Ising-like triangular-lattice antiferromagnet erbium heptatantalate first develops a three-sublattice long-range magnetic order -- analogous to a solid -- which then, unexpectedly, melts at even lower temperatures into a short-range correlated spin-stripe state -- analogous to a liquid. We propose that such an unprecedented ``spin Pomeranchuk effect" can generically arise from strong competition between spin-spin interactions in frustrated magnets, and provides a novel avenue to transformations between exotic magnetic phases.

$\mathbb{Z}_2$ Vortex Crystal Candidate in the Triangular $S=1/2$ Quantum Antiferromagnet

The prospect of merging the paradigms of geometric frustration on a triangular lattice and bond anisotropies in the strong spin-orbit coupling limit holds tremendous promise in the ongoing hunt for exotic quantum materials. Here we identify a new candidate system to realize such physics, the organic quantum antiferromagnet (CD$_3$ND$_3$)$_2$NaRuCl$_6$. We report a combination of thermodynamic, magneto-elastic and neutron scattering experiments on single-crystals to determine the phase diagram in axial magnetic fields $\mathbf{H \parallel c}$ and propose a minimal model Hamiltonian. (CD$_3$ND$_3$)$_2$NaRuCl$_6$ displays an ideal triangular arrangement of Ru$^{3+}$ ions adopting the spin-orbital entangled $j_{\rm eff} = 1/2$ state. It hosts residual magnetic order below $T_{\rm N} = 0.23$ K and a highly unusual $H-T$ phase diagram including three different incommensurate states. Spin-waves in the high-field polarized regime are well described by a Heisenberg-like triangular lattice Hamiltonian with a potential sub-leading bond dependent anisotropy term $J_{\pm\pm}$. We discuss possible candidate magnetic structures in the various observed phases and propose two mechanisms that could explain the field-dependent incommensurability, requiring either a small ferromagnetic Kitaev term or a tiny magneto-elastic $J-J'$ isosceles distortion driven by pseudospin-lattice coupling. We argue that the multi-$\mathbf{q}$ ground state in zero magnetic field is a prime candidate for hosting the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ vortex crystal proposed on the triangular Heisenberg-Kitaev model. (CD$_3$ND$_3$)$_2$NaRuCl$_6$ is the first member in an extended family of quantum triangular lattice magnets, providing a new playground to study the interplay of geometric frustration and spin-orbit effects.

Enhanced two-dimensional ferromagnetism in van der Waals $\beta$-UTe$_3$ monolayers

The discovery of local-moment magnetism in van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors down to the single-layer limit has led to a paradigm shift in the understanding of two-dimensional (2D) magnets and unleashed their potential for applications in microelectronic and optoelectronic devices. The incorporation of strong electronic and magnetic correlations in 2D vdW metals remains a sought-after platform not only to enable control of emergent quantum phases, such as superconductivity, but also to achieve more theoretically tractable microscopic models of complex materials. To date, however, there is limited success in the discovery of such metallic vdW platforms, and $f$-electron monolayers remain out of reach. Here we demonstrate that the actinide $\beta$-UTe$_3$ can be exfoliated to the monolayer limit. A sizable electronic specific heat coefficient provides the hallmark of strong correlations. Remarkably, $\beta$-UTe$_3$ remains ferromagnetic in the half-unit-cell limit with an enhanced ordering temperature of 35 K, a factor of two larger than its bulk counterpart. Our work establishes $\beta$-UTe$_3$ as a novel materials platform for investigating and modeling correlated behavior in the monolayer limit and opens numerous avenues for quantum control with, e.g., strain engineering.

Magnetic field-induced phases and spin Hamiltonian in Cs2CoBr4

Magnetic structures and spin excitations are studied across the phase diagram of the geometrically frustrated S = 3/2 quantum antiferromagnet Cs2CoBr4 in magnetic fields applied along the magnetic easy axis, using neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering and THz absorption spectroscopy. The data are analyzed, where appropriate, using extended SU (4) linear spin wave theory. A minimal magnetic Hamiltonian is proposed based on measurements in the high field polarized state. It deviates considerably from the previously considered models. Additional dilatometry experiments highlight the importance of magnetoelastic coupling in this system.

Magnetic phase diagram of the breathing-kagome antiferromagnet Nd$_3$BWO$_9$

The highly-frustrated rare-earth based magnet Nd$_3$BWO$_9$ is a promising candidate in the search for proximate spin liquid physics. We present a thorough investigation on single crystals of this material using bulk and microscopic techniques. Magnetization data reveal a fractional magnetization plateau for three different investigated field directions. The magnetic phase diagram is mapped out from calorimetric data and exhibits several domes of magnetic order below 0.3 K. Propagation vectors for all ordered phases are presented. The results suggest complex ordering in this material, and unveil the existence of a commensuration transition of the propagation vector at zero magnetic field. A scenario where interplane exchange interactions are essential to a magnetic model of Nd$_3$BWO$_9$ is discussed.

Quantum magnetism of ferromagnetic spin dimers in $α$-KVOPO$_4$

Magnetism of the spin-$\frac12$ $α$-KVOPO$_4$ is studied by thermodynamic measurements, $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron diffraction, and density-functional band-structure calculations. Ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of $θ_{\rm CW}\simeq 15.9$ K and the saturation field of $μ_0H_s\simeq 11.3$ T suggest the predominant ferromagnetic coupling augmented by a weaker antiferromagnetic exchange that leads to a short-range order below 5 K and the long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_{\rm N}\simeq 2.7$ K in zero field. Magnetic structure with the propagation vector $\mathbf k=(0,\frac12,0)$ and the ordered magnetic moment of 0.58 $μ_B$ at 1.5 K exposes a non-trivial spin lattice where strong ferromagnetic dimers are coupled antiferromagnetically. The reduction in the ordered magnetic moment with respect to the classical value (1 $μ_{\rm B}$) indicates sizable quantum fluctuations in this setting, despite the predominance of ferromagnetic exchange. We interpret this tendency toward ferromagnetism as arising from the effective orbital order in the folded chains of the VO$_6$ octahedra.

The planar triangular $S=3/2$ magnet AgCrSe$_2$: magnetic frustration, short range correlations, and field tuned anisotropic cycloidal magnetic order

Our studies evidence an anisotropic magnetic order below $T_N = 32$~K. Susceptibility data in small fields of about 1~T reveal an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order for $H \perp c$, whereas for $H \parallel c$ the data are reminiscent of a field-induced ferromagnetic (FM) structure. At low temperatures and for $H \perp c$, the field-dependent magnetization and AC susceptibility data evidence a metamagnetic transition at $H^+ = 5$~T, which is absent for $H \parallel c$. We assign this to a transition from a planar cycloidal spin structure at low fields to a planar fan-like arrangement above $H^+$. A fully FM polarized state is obtained above the saturation field of $H_{\perp S} = 23.7$~T at 2~K with a magnetization of $M_s = 2.8$~$μ_{\rm B}{\rm /Cr}$. For $H \parallel c$, $M(H)$ monotonously increases and saturates at the same $M_s$ value at $H_{\parallel S} = 25.1$~T at 4.2~K. Above $T_N $, the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat indicate signatures of two dimensional (2D) frustration related to the presence of planar ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. We found a pronounced nearly isotropic maximum in both properties at about $T^* = 45$~K, which is a clear fingerprint of short-range correlations and emergent spin fluctuations. Calculations based on a planar 2D Heisenberg model support our experimental findings and suggest a predominant FM exchange among nearest and AFM exchange among third-nearest neighbors. Only a minor contribution might be assigned to the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction possible related to the non-centrosymmetric polar space group $R3m$. Due to these competing interactions, the magnetism in AgCrSe$_{2}$, in contrast to the oxygen based delafossites, can be tuned by relatively small, experimentally accessible, magnetic fields, allowing us to establish the complete anisotropic magnetic $H-T$ phase diagram in detail.

A crossover from Kondo semiconductor to metallic antiferromagnet with $5d$-electron doping in CeFe$_2$Al$_{10}$

We report a systematic study of the $5d$-electron-doped system Ce(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.15$). With increasing $x$, the orthorhombic $b$~axis decreases slightly while accompanying changes in $a$ and $c$ leave the unit cell volume almost unchanged. Inelastic neutron scattering, along with thermal and transport measurements, reveal that for the Kondo semiconductor CeFe$_2$Al$_{10}$, the low-temperature energy gap which is proposed to be a consequence of strong $c \mhyphen f$ hybridization, is suppressed by a small amount of Ir substitution for Fe, and that the system adopts a metallic ground state with an increase in the density of states at the Fermi level. The charge or transport gap collapses (at $x=$~0.04) faster than the spin gap with Ir substitution. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and muon spin relaxation measurements demonstrate that the system undergoes long-range antiferromagnetic order below a Néel temperature, $T_{\mathrm{N}}$, of 3.1(2)~K for $x = 0.15$. The ordered moment is estimated to be smaller than 0.07(1)~$μ_\mathrm{B}$/Ce although the trivalent state of Ce is confirmed by Ce L$_3$-edge x-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy. It is suggested that the $c \mhyphen f$ hybridization gap, which plays an important role in the unusually high ordering temperatures observed in Ce$T_2$Al$_{10}$ ($T$ = Ru and Os), may not be necessary for the onset of magnetic order with a low $T_{\mathrm{N}}$ seen here in Ce(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_x$)$_2$Al$_{10}$.

Structural and magnetic properties of the new quantum magnet BaCuTe$_2$O$_6$

We investigate the structural and magnetic properties of the new quantum magnet BaCuTe$_2$O$_6$. This compound is synthesized for the first time in powder and single crystal form. Synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction reveal a cubic crystal structure (P4$_1$32) where the magnetic Cu$^{2+}$ ions form a complex network. Physical properties measurements suggest the presence of antiferromagnetic interactions with a Curie-Weiss temperature of -33K, while long-range magnetic order occurs at the much lower temperature of ~6.3K. The magnetic structure, solved using neutron diffraction, reveals antiferromagnetic order along chains parallel to the a, b and c crystal axes. This is consistent with the magnetic excitations which resemble the multispinon continuum typical of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. A consistent intrachain interaction value of ~34K is achieved from the various techniques. Finally the magnetic structure provides evidence that the chains are coupled together in a non-colinear arrangement by a much weaker antiferromagnetic, frustrated hyperkagome interaction.

Magnetic structure of a new quantum magnet SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$

SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$ consists of a 3-dimensional arrangement of spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Cu$^{2+}$ ions. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd neighbor interactions respectively couple Cu$^{2+}$ moments into a network of isolated triangles, a highly frustrated hyperkagome lattice consisting of corner sharing triangles and antiferromagnetic chains. Of these, the chain interaction dominates in SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$ while the other two interactions lead to frustrated inter-chain coupling giving rise to long range magnetic order at suppressed temperatures. In this paper, we investigate the magnetic properties in SrCuTe$_2$O$_6$ using muon relaxation spectroscopy and neutron diffraction and present the low temperature magnetic structure.

Investigation of the magnetic ground state of the ordered double perovskite Sr2YbRuO6: a tale of two transitions

Comprehensive muon spin rotation/relaxation (muSR) and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) studies supported via bulk measurements have been performed on the ordered double perovskite Sr2YbRuO6 to investigate the nature of the magnetic ground state. Two sharp transitions at TN1 ~ 42 K and TN2 ~ 36 K have been observed in the static and dynamic magnetization measurements, coinciding with the heat capacity data. In order to confirm the origin of the observed phase transitions and the magnetic ground state, microscopic evidences are presented here. An initial indication of long-range magnetic ordering comes from a sharp drop in the muon initial asymmetry and a peak in the relaxation rate near TN1. NPD confirms that the magnetic ground state of Sr2YbRuO6 consists of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure with interpenetrating lattices of parallel Yb3+ and Ru5+ moments lying in the ab-plane and adopting a A-type AFM structure. Intriguingly, a small but remarkable change is observed in the long-range ordering parameters at TN2 confirming the presence of a weak spin reorientation (i.e. change in spin configuration) transition of Ru and Yb moments, as well as a change in the magnetic moment evolution of the Yb3+ spins at TN2. The temperature dependent behaviour of the Yb3+ and Ru5+ moments suggests that the 4d-electrons of Ru5+ play a dominating role in stabilizing the long range ordered magnetic ground state in the double perovskite Sr2YbRuO6 whereas only the Yb3+ moments show an arrest at TN2. The observed magnetic structure and the presence of a ferromagnetic interaction between Ru- and Yb- ions are explained with use of the Goodenough-Kanamori-Anderson (GKA) rules. Possible reasons for the presence of the second magnetic phase transition and of a compensation point in the magnetization data are linked to competing mechanisms of magnetic anisotropy.

Evidence for a three-dimensional quantum spin liquid in PbCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$

The quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a highly entangled magnetic state characterized by the absence of static magnetism in its ground state. Instead, the spins fluctuate in a highly correlated way down to the lowest temperatures. The QSL is very rare and is confined to a few specific cases where the interactions between the magnetic ions cannot be simultaneously satisfied (known as frustration). Lattices with magnetic ions in triangular or tetrahedral arrangements which interact via isotropic antiferromagnetic interactions can generate such a frustration. Three-dimensional isotropic spin liquids have mostly been sought in materials where the magnetic ions form pyrochlore or hyperkagome lattices. Here we present a three-dimensional lattice called the hyper-hyperkagome that enables spin liquid behaviour and manifests in the compound PbCuTe$_{2}$O$_{6}$. Using a combination of experiment and theory we show that this system exhibits signs of being a quantum spin liquid with no detectable static magnetism together with the presence of diffuse continua in the magnetic spectrum suggestive of fractional spinon excitations.

Magnetically driven loss of centrosymmetry in metallic Pb2CoOsO6

We report magnetic, transport, neutron diffraction, and muon spin rotation data showing that Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$, a newly synthesized metallic double-perovskite with a centrosymmetric space group at room temperature, exhibits a continuous second-order phase transition at 45 K to a magnetically ordered state with a non-centrosymmetric space group. The absence of inversion symmetry is very uncommon in metals, particularly metallic oxides. In contrast to the recently reported ferroelectric-like structural transition in LiOsO$_3$, the phase transition in Pb$_2$CoOsO$_6$ is driven by a long-range collinear antiferromagnetic order, with propagation vector $\textbf{k} = (\frac{1}{2},0,\frac{1}{2})$, which relieves the frustration associated with the symmetry of themagnetic exchanges. This magnetically-driven loss of inversion symmetry represents a new frontier in the search for novel metallic behavior.

Robustness of helical magnetic structure under external pressure in Fe-doped MnNiGe alloy

We have investigated the detailed magnetic structure of a Fe-doped MnNiGe alloy of nominal composition MnNi$_{0.75}$Fe$_{0.25}$Ge by ambient and high pressure (6 kbar) neutron powder diffraction study. The alloy undergoes a martensitic phase transition between 230 K and 275 K. The low-temperature martensite phase orders antiferromagnetically with helical modulation of Mn-spins. At 1.5 K, the incommensurate propagation vector $\bf k$ is found to be (0.1790(1),0,0), and it remains almost unchanged with temperature under ambient condition. The Application of external pressure ($P$) reduces the martensitic transition temperature and results in a significant change in the incommensurate magnetic propagation vector. At 10 K, with 6 kbar of external pressure, the incommensurate magnetic structure of the alloy stabilizes with $\bf k$ = (0.1569(1),0,0). Interestingly, the strong temperature dependence of $\bf k$ in the presence of external $P$ has also been observed.

Magnetic order and single-ion anisotropy in Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$

Terbium gallium garnet (TGG), Tb$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$, is well known for its applications in laser optics, but also exhibits complex low-temperature magnetism that is not yet fully understood. Its low-temperature magnetic order is determined by means of time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction. It is found to be a multiaxial antiferromagnet with magnetic Tb$^{3+}$ ions forming six sublattices of magnetic moments aligned parallel and anti-parallel to the $\langle100\rangle$ crystallographic directions of the cubic unit cell. The structure displays strong easy-axis anisotropy with respect to a two-fold axis of symmetry in the local orthorhombic environment of the Tb$^{3+}$ sites. The crystal-field splitting within the single-ion ground-state manifold is investigated by inelastic neutron scattering on powder samples. A strong temperature dependence of the quasidoublet ground-state is observed and revised parameters of the crystal-field Hamiltonian are given. The results of bulk magnetic susceptibility and magnetisation measurements are in good agreement with values based on the crystal-field model down to 20~K, where the onset of magnetic correlations is observed.

Commensurate to incommensurate magnetic phase transition in Honeycomb-lattice pyrovanadate Mn2V2O7

We have synthesized single crystalline sample of Mn$_2$V$_2$O$_7$ using floating zone technique and investigated the ground state using magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity and neutron diffraction. Our magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity reveal two successive magnetic transitions at $T_{N1} =$ 19 K and $T_{N2} =$ 11.8 K indicating two distinct magnetically ordered phases. The single crystal neutron diffraction study shows that in the temperature ($T$) range 11.8 K $\le T \le$ 19 K the magnetic structure is commensurate with propagation vector $k_1 = (0, 0.5, 0)$, while upon lowering temperature below $T_{N2} =$ 11.8 K an incommensurate magnetic order emerges with $k_2 = (0.38, 0.48, 0.5)$ and the magnetic structure can be represented by cycloidal modulation of the Mn spin in $ac-$plane. We are reporting this commensurate to incommensurate transition for the first time. We discuss the role of the magnetic exchange interactions and spin-orbital coupling on the stability of the observed magnetic phase transitions.

Magnetic states of Ni-Mn-Sn based shape memory alloy: a combined muon spin relaxation and neutron diffraction study

The fascinating multiple magnetic states observed in the Ni-Mn-Sn based metamagnetic shape memory alloy are addressed through a combined muon spin relaxation (muSR) and neutron powder diffraction studies. The material used in the present investigation is an off-stoichiometric alloy of nominal composition, Ni[2.04]Mn[1.4]Sn[0.56]. This prototypical alloy, similar to other members in the Ni-Mn-Sn series, orders ferromagnetically below T[CA] (= 320 K), and undergoes martensitic type structural transition at T[MS] (= 290 K), which is associated with the sudden loss of magnetization. The sample regains its magnetization below another magnetic transition at T[CM] = 260 K. Eventually, the composition shows a step-like anomaly at T[B] = 120 K, which is found to coincide with the blocking temperature of exchange bias effect observed in the alloy. In our study, the initial asymmetry A_[10] ) of the $μ$SR data falls rapidly below T[CA], indicating the onset of bulk magnetic order. A[10] regains its full asymmetry value below T[MS] suggesting the collapse of the ferromagnetic order into a fully disordered paramagnetic state. Below the second magnetic transition at T[CM], asymmetry drops again, confirming the re-entrance of a long range ordered state. Interestingly, A[10] increases sluggishly below T[B], indicating that the system attains a disordered/glassy magnetic phase below T[B], which is responsible for the exchange bias and frequency dispersion in the ac susceptibility data as previously reported. The neutron powder diffraction data do not show any magnetic superlattice reflections, ruling out the possibility of a long range antiferromagnetic state at low temperatures. The ground state is likely to be comprised of a concentrated metallic spin-glass in the backdrop of an ordered ferromagnetic state.

Vesignieite: a $S = \frac{1}{2}$ kagome antiferromagnet with dominant third-neighbor exchange

The spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome antiferromagnet is an archetypal frustrated system predicted to host a variety of exotic magnetic states. We show using neutron scattering measurements that deuterated vesignieite BaCu$_{3}$V$_{2}$O$_{8}$(OD)$_{2}$, a fully stoichiometric $S=1/2$ kagome magnet with $<$1% lattice distortion, orders magnetically at $T_{\mathrm{N}}=9$K into a multi-k coplanar variant of the predicted triple-k octahedral structure. We find this structure is stabilized by a dominant antiferromagnetic 3$^{\mathrm{rd}}$-neighbor exchange $J_3$ with minor 1$^{\mathrm{st}}$- or 2$^{\mathrm{nd}}$--neighbour exchange. The spin-wave spectrum is well described by a $J_3$-only model including a tiny symmetric exchange anisotropy.
