Pontryagin numbers and nonnegative curvature

We prove that any rational linear combination of Pontryagin numbers that is not a multiple of the signature is unbounded on connected closed oriented manifolds of nonnegative sectional curvature. Combining our result with Gromov's finiteness result for the signature yields a new characterization of the L-genus.

Groups not presentable by products

In this paper we study obstructions to presentability by products for finitely generated groups. Along the way we develop both the concept of acentral subgroups, and the relations between presentability by products on the one hand, and certain geometric and measure or orbit equivalence invariants of groups on the other. This leads to many new examples of groups not presentable by products, including all groups with infinitely many ends, the (outer) automorphism groups of free groups, Thompson's groups, and even some elementary amenable groups.

Three-manifolds and Kaehler groups

We give a simple proof of a result originally due to Dimca and Suciu: a group that is both Kaehler and the fundamental group of a closed three-manifold is finite. We also prove that a group that is both the fundamental group of a closed three-manifold and of a non-Kaehler compact complex surface is infinite cyclic or the direct product of an infinite cyclic group and a group of order two.

Contact pairs and locally conformally symplectic structures

We discuss a correspondence between certain contact pairs on the one hand, and certain locally conformally symplectic forms on the other. In particular, we characterize these structures through suspensions of contactomorphisms. If the contact pair is endowed with a normal metric, then the corresponding lcs form is locally conformally Kaehler, and, in fact, Vaisman. This leads to classification results for normal metric contact pairs. In complex dimension two we obtain a new proof of Belgun's classification of Vaisman manifolds under the additional assumption that the Kodaira dimension is non-negative. We also produce many examples of manifolds admitting locally conformally symplectic structures but no locally conformally Kaehler ones.

The Gelfand-Kalinin-Fuks class and characteristic classes of transversely symplectic foliations

In the early 1970's, Gelfand, Kalinin and Fuks found an exotic characteristic class of degree 7 in the Gelfand-Fuks cohomology of the Lie algebra of formal Hamiltonian vector fields on the plane. We prove that this cohomology class can be decomposed as a product of a certain leaf cohomology class of degree 5 and the transverse symplectic class. This is similar to the well known factorization of the Godbillon-Vey class for codimension n foliations. We also interpret the characteristic classes of transversely symplectic foliations introduced by Kontsevich in terms of the known classes and prove non-triviality for some of them.

Fibrations and fundamental groups of Kaehler-Weyl manifolds

We extend the Siu--Beauville theorem to a certain class of compact Kaehler--Weyl manifolds, proving that they fiber holomorphically over hyperbolic Riemannian surfaces whenever they satisfy the necessary topological hypotheses. As applications we obtain restrictions on the fundamental groups of such Kaehler--Weyl manifolds, and show that in certain cases they are in fact Kaehler.

Geometric formality of homogeneous spaces and of biquotients

We provide examples of homogeneous spaces which are neither symmetric spaces nor real cohomology spheres, yet have the property that every invariant metric is geometrically formal. We also extend the known obstructions to geometric formality to some new classes of homogeneous spaces and of biquotients, and to certain sphere bundles.

Fundamental classes not representable by products

We prove that rationally essential manifolds with suitably large fundamental groups do not admit any maps of non-zero degree from products of closed manifolds of positive dimension. Particular examples include all manifolds of non-positive sectional curvature of rank one and all irreducible locally symmetric spaces of non-compact type. For closed manifolds from certain classes, say non-positively curved ones, or certain surface bundles over surfaces, we show that they do admit maps of non-zero degree from non-trivial products if and only if they are virtually diffeomorphic to products.

On hyperbolic cohomology classes

We study hyperbolic cohomology classes in the general context of simplicial complexes and prove homological invariance statements for them. We relate the existence of hyperbolic cohomology classes to the non-amenability of the fundamental group. In degree two we clarify the relation between hyperbolic and atoroidal classes, leading to an application to symplectically atoroidal manifolds.

Stable length in stable groups

We show that the stable commutator length vanishes for certain groups defined as infinite unions of smaller groups. The argument uses a group-theoretic analogue of the Mazur swindle, and goes back to the works of Anderson, Fisher, and Mather on homeomorphism groups.

Coarse topology, enlargeability, and essentialness

Using methods from coarse topology we show that fundamental classes of closed enlargeable manifolds map non-trivially both to the rational homology of their fundamental groups and to the K-theory of the corresponding reduced C*-algebras. Our proofs do not depend on the Baum--Connes conjecture and provide independent confirmation for specific predictions derived from this conjecture.

Chern numbers and the geometry of partial flag manifolds

We calculate the Chern classes and Chern numbers for the natural almost Hermitian structures of the partial flag manifolds F_n=SU(n+2)/S(U(n)\times U(1)\times U(1)). For all n>1 there are two invariant complex algebraic structures, which arise from the projectivizations of the holomorphic tangent and cotangent bundles of complex projective spaces. The projectivization of the cotangent bundle is the twistor space of a Grassmannian considered as a quaternionic Kähler manifold. There is also an invariant nearly Kähler structure, because F_n is a 3-symmetric space. We explain the relations between the different structures and their Chern classes, and we prove that F_n is not geometrically formal.

Chern numbers and diffeomorphism types of projective varieties

In 1954 Hirzebruch asked which linear combinations of Chern numbers are topological invariants of smooth complex projective varieties. We give a complete answer to this question in small dimensions, and also prove partial results without restrictions on the dimension.

The geometry of recursion operators

We study the fields of endomorphisms intertwining pairs of symplectic structures. Using these endomorphisms we prove an analogue of Moser's theorem for simultaneous isotopies of two families of symplectic forms. We also consider the geometric structures defined by pairs and triples of symplectic forms for which the squares of the intertwining endomorphisms are plus or minus the identity. For pairs of forms we recover the notions of symplectic pairs and of holomorphic symplectic structures. For triples we recover the notion of a hypersymplectic structure, and we also find three new structures that have not been considered before. One of these is the symplectic formulation of hyper-Kaehler geometry, which turns out to be a strict generalization of the usual definition in terms of differential or Kaehler geometry.

The classification of football patterns

We prove that every spherical football (also known as a spherical soccer ball) is a branched cover, branched only in the vertices, of the standard football made up of 12 pentagons and 20 hexagons. We also give examples showing that the corresponding result is not true for footballs of higher genera. Moreover, we classify the possible pairs (k,l) for which football patterns on the sphere exist satisfying a natural generalisation of the usual incidence relation between pentagons and hexagons to k-gons and l-gons.
