Early Multiwavelength Observations of AT 2026fgk: The Luminous Afterglow to Sub-luminous GRB 260310A, Identified Independently of a Gamma-ray Trigger

The origins of sub-luminous ($L_\mathrm{\gamma,\mathrm{iso}} < 10^{49.5}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$) gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) associated with broad-lined Type~Ic supernovae (Ic-BL SNe) are poorly understood, in part due to the low discovery rate and faint afterglows. Here we present the identification of the optical afterglow of Fermi-GBM-detected GRB\,260310A (AT\,2026fgk) as a rapidly rising ($>1\,$mag\,d$^{-1}$), red ($g-r=0.4$\,mag) transient using the Gravitational-wave Optical Transient Observatory, Large Array Survey Telescope, and Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) data streams. We present multiwavelength follow-up observations from the first 50\,days, which reveal that GRB 260310A/AT\,2026fgk was sub-luminous ($L_\mathrm{\gamma,iso}=10^{48.8}\,$erg\,s$^{-1}$); it was the most nearby ($z=0.153$) afterglow identified blindly by an optical survey; and that it is one of the brightest afterglows ever observed at X-ray, optical, and radio (cm to mm) wavelengths. We spectroscopically confirm an underlying Ic-BL SN with properties typical of GRB-SNe ($M_\mathrm{ej}\approx3\,M_\odot$, $E_{\rm K}\approx 10^{52}\,$erg). With basic modeling of the afterglow, including the long optical rise ($\approx10^{3}\,$s), we infer either a low initial Lorentz factor ($\Gamma_0\approx40$) or a slightly off-axis viewing angle ($\lesssim3^\circ$). The host galaxy's mass and star formation rate are similar to the hosts of other sub-luminous GRBs. ZTF's flux-limited survey gives a volumetric rate of AT\,2026fgk-like events of $0.30^{+1.37}_{-0.29}\,$Gpc\,$^{-3}$\,yr$^{-1}$, which is consistent with the on-axis, high luminosity ($L_{\rm \gamma,iso}>10^{49.5}$\,erg\,s$^{-1}$) long-GRB rate. The similarity in the rates strongly constrains the prevalence of low-$\Gamma_0$ bursts and the beaming of the initial relativistic material in GRBs.

On Systematic Errors in Cross-Identification of Binary Stars in Gaia

Using Gaia DR3 data, binary star catalogs have been created containing information on a total of more than 2.6 million pairs. This increases by more than an order of magnitude the ensemble of binary stars with known characteristics, which previously numbered about 140 thousand pairs. To perform statistical analysis of the complete ensemble of binary stars, including both previously known and newly discovered pairs, cross-identification by coordinates was carried out between the most complete pre-Gaia publication compilative binary star catalog ILB and data from binary star catalogs based on Gaia DR3 results. An analysis of the results of this identification was performed, showing the dependence of its characteristics both on the data from the source catalogs and on coordinates. It is shown that in dense stellar fields, particularly in the Galactic disk, an increase in the fraction of false positive identifications can be expected. At the same time, for systems with large proper motion, there is a high probability of a false negative outcome. Possible modifications to the identification method are proposed to reduce the role of the described systematic errors and increase the reliability of its results.

Variable binaries and variables in binaries in the Binary Star Database BDB

The BDB, Binary star DataBase http://bdb.inasan.ru combines data of the catalogues of binary and multiple stars of all observational types. There is a number of ways for variable stars to form or to be a part of binary or multiple systems. We describe how such stars are represented in the database.

Visual binary stars: data to investigate formation of binaries

Statistics of orbital parameters of binary stars as well as statistics of their physical characteristics bear traces of star formation history. However, statistical investigations of binaries are complicated by lacking or incomplete observational data and by a number of observational selection effects. Visual binaries are the most numerous observed binaries, the number of pairs exceeds 130000. The most complete list of presently known visual binary stars was compiled by cross-matching objects and combining data of the three largest catalogues of visual binaries. It was supplemented by the data on parallaxes, multicolor photometry, spectral characteristics of the stars of this list taken from other catalogues. This allowed us to compensate partly for the lack of observational data for these objects. Combined data allowed us to check validity of observational values and to investigate statistics of the orbital and physical parameters of visual binaries. Corrections for incompleteness of observational data are discussed. Obtained datasets and modern distributions of binary parameters will be used to reconstruct the initial distributions and parameters of the function of star formation for binary systems.

Statistical analysis of a comprehensive list of visual binaries

Visual binary stars are the most abundant class of observed binaries. The most comprehensive list of data on visual binaries compiled recently by cross-matching the largest catalogues of visual binaries allowed a statistical investigation of observational parameters of these systems. The dataset was cleaned by correcting uncertainties and misclassifications, and supplemented with available parallax data. The refined dataset is free from technical biases and contains 3676 presumably physical visual pairs of luminosity class V with known angular separations, magnitudes of the components, spectral types, and parallaxes. We also compiled a restricted sample of 998 pairs free from observational biases due to the probability of binary discovery. Certain distributions of observational and physical parameters of stars of our dataset are discussed.
