Remarks on NonHamiltonian Statistical Mechanics: Lyapunov Exponents and Phase-Space Dimensionality Loss

The dissipation associated with nonequilibrium flow processes is reflected by the formation of strange attractor distributions in phase space. The information dimension of these attractors is less than that of the equilibrium phase space, corresponding to the extreme rarity of nonequilibrium states. Here we take advantage of a simple model for heat conduction to demonstrate that the nonequilibrium dimensionality loss can definitely exceed the number of phase-space dimensions required to thermostat an otherwise Hamiltonian system.

Topological Dependence of Universal Correlations in Multi-Parameter Hamiltonians

Universality of correlation functions obtained in parametric random matrix theory is explored in a multi-parameter formalism, through the introduction of a diffusion matrix $D_{ij}(R)$, and compared to results from a multi-parameter chaotic model. We show that certain universal correlation functions in 1-d are no longer well defined by the metric distance between the points in parameter space, due to a global topological dependence on the path taken. By computing the density of diabolical points, which is found to increases quadratically with the dimension of the space, we find a universal measure of the density of diabolical points in chaotic systems.

Quantum Diffusion and Tunneling with Parametric Banded Random Matrix Hamiltonians

The microscopic origin of dissipation of a driven quantum many body system is addressed in the framework of a parametric banded random matrix approach. We find noticeable violations of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and we observe also that the energy diffusion has a markedly non-Gaussian character. Within the Feynman-Vernon path integral formalism and in the Markovian limit, we further consider the time evolution of a slow subsystem coupled to such a ``bath'' of intrinsic degrees of freedom. We show that dissipation leads to qualitative modifications of the time evolution of the density matrix of the slow subsystem. In either the spatial, momentum or energy representation the density distribution acquires very long tails and tunneling is greatly enhanced.

Strong Decays of $Q \bar Q$ Mesons

We present a detailed study of the two-body strong decays of light mesons. Both the space part and the spin-flavor-color part of the wave functions are generated algebraically and closed forms are obtained for all decays. Experimental deviations from our systematics are seen to be suggestive of both missing mesons and exotic QCD configurations.
