Stripe Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations in SrCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements of paramagnetic SrCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ at T=5 K reveal antiferromagnetic (AFM) spin fluctuations that are peaked at a wavevector of $\textbf{Q}_{\mathrm{AFM}}=(1/2,1/2,1)$ and possess a large energy scale. These stripe spin fluctuations are similar to those found in $A$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ compounds, where spin-density wave AFM is driven by Fermi surface nesting between electron and hole pockets separated by $\textbf{Q}_{\mathrm{AFM}}$. SrCo$_{2}$As$_{2}$ has a more complex Fermi surface and band structure calculations indicate a potential instability towards either a ferromagnetic or stripe AFM ground state. The results suggest that stripe AFM magnetism is a general feature of both iron and cobalt-based arsenides and the search for spin fluctuation-induced unconventional superconductivity should be expanded to include cobalt-based compounds.

Doping dependence of the spin excitations in Fe-based superconductors Fe1+yTe1-xSex

The Fe1+yTe1-xSex series of materials is one of the prototype families of Fe-based superconductors. To provide further insight into these materials we present systematic inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the low energy spin excitations for x=0.27, 0.36, 0.40, 0.49. These measurements show an evolution of incommensurate spin excitations towards the (1/2 1/2 0) wave vector with doping. Concentrations (x=0.40 and 0.49) which exhibit the most robust superconducting properties have spin excitations closest to (1/2 1/2 0) and also exhibit a strong spin resonance in the spin excitation spectrum below Tc. The resonance signal appears to be closer to (1/2 1/2 0) than the underlying spin excitations. We discuss the possible relationship between superconductivity and spin excitations at the (1/2 1/2 0) wave vector and the role that interstitial Fe may play.

Inelastic neutron scattering study of phonon density of states in nanostructured Si1xGex thermoelectrics

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements are utilized to explore relative changes in the generalized phonon density of states of nanocrystalline Si1xGex thermoelectric materials prepared via ball milling and hot-pressing techniques. Dynamic signatures of Ge clustering can be inferred from the data by referencing the resulting spectra to a density functional theoretical model assuming homogeneous alloying via the virtual-crystal approximation. Comparisons are also presented between as-milled Si nanopowder and bulk, polycrystalline Si where a preferential low-energy enhancement and lifetime broadening of the phonon density of states appear in the nanopowder. Negligible differences are however observed between the phonon spectra of bulk Si and hot pressed, nanostructured Si samples suggesting that changes to the single phonon dynamics above 4 meV play only a secondary role in the modified heat conduction of this compound.

Effect of Li-deficiency impurities on the electron-overdoped LiFeAs superconductor

We use transport, inelastic neutron scattering, and angle resolved photoemission experiments to demonstrate that the stoichiometric LiFeAs is an intrinsically electron-overdoped superconductor similar to those of the electron-overdoped NaFe1-xTxAs and BaFe2-xTxAs2 (T = Co,Ni). Furthermore, we show that although transport properties of the stoichiometric superconducting LiFeAs and Li-deficient nonsuperconducting Li1-xFeAs are different, their electronic and magnetic properties are rather similar. Therefore, the nonsuperconducting Li1-xFeAs is also in the electron overdoped regime, where small Li deficiencies near the FeAs octahedra can dramatically suppress superconductivity through the impurity scattering effect.

Electron-phonon coupling in the conventional superconductor YNi$_2$B$_2$C at high phonon energies studied by time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy

We report an inelastic neutron scattering investigation of phonons with energies up to 159 meV in the conventional superconductor YNi$_2$B$_2$C. Using the SWEEP mode, a newly developed time-of-flight technique involving the continuous rotation of a single crystal specimen, allowed us to measure a four dimensional volume in (Q,E) space and, thus, determine the dispersion surface and linewidths of the $A_{1g}$ (~ 102 meV) and $A_u$ (~ 159 meV) type phonon modes for the whole Brillouin zone. Despite of having linewidths of $Γ= 10 meV$, $A_{1g}$ modes do not strongly contribute to the total electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$. However, experimental linewidths show a remarkable agreement with ab-initio calculations over the complete phonon energy range demonstrating the accuracy of such calculations in a rare comparison to a comprehensive experimental data set.

Quantum oscillations of nitrogen atoms in uranium nitride

The vibrational excitations of crystalline solids corresponding to acoustic or optic one phonon modes appear as sharp features in measurements such as neutron spectroscopy. In contrast, many-phonon excitations generally produce a complicated, weak, and featureless response. Here we present time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements for the binary solid uranium nitride (UN), showing well-defined, equally-spaced, high energy vibrational modes in addition to the usual phonons. The spectrum is that of a single atom, isotropic quantum harmonic oscillator and characterizes independent motions of light nitrogen atoms, each found in an octahedral cage of heavy uranium atoms. This is an unexpected and beautiful experimental realization of one of the fundamental, exactly-solvable problems in quantum mechanics. There are also practical implications, as the oscillator modes must be accounted for in the design of generation IV nuclear reactors that plan to use UN as a fuel.

Magnetic excitations in underdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 with x=0.047

The magnetic excitations in the paramagnetic-tetragonal phase of underdoped Ba(Fe0.953Co0.047)2As2, as measured by inelastic neutron scattering, can be well described by a phenomenological model with purely diffusive spin dynamics. At low energies, the spectrum around the magnetic ordering vector Q_AFM consists of a single peak with elliptical shape in momentum space. At high energies, this inelastic peak is split into two peaks across the direction perpendicular to Q_AFM. We use our fittings to argue that such a splitting is not due to incommensurability or propagating spin-wave excitations, but is rather a consequence of the anisotropies in the Landau damping and in the magnetic correlation length, both of which are allowed by the tetragonal symmetry of the system. We also measure the magnetic spectrum deep inside the magnetically-ordered phase, and find that it is remarkably similar to the spectrum of the paramagnetic phase, revealing the strongly overdamped character of the magnetic excitations.

(PI,0) antiferromagnetic spin excitations in superconducting Rb0.82Fe1.68Se2

We use inelastic neutron scattering to show that superconducting (SC) rubidium iron selenide Rb0.82Fe1.68Se2 exhibits antiferromagnetic (AF) spin excitations near the in-plane wave vector Q = (PI, 0) identical to that for iron arsenide superconductors. Moreover, we find that these excitations change from incommensurate to commensurate with increasing energy, and occur at the expense of spin waves associated with the coexisting sqrt(5)\timessqrt(5) block AF phase. Since angle resolved photoemission experiments reveal no evidence for hole-like Fermi surface at Gamma(0, 0), our results suggest that the Q = (PI, 0) excitations in SC Rb0.82Fe1.68Se2 come from localized moments and may have a similar origin as the hourglass-like spin excitations in copper oxide superconductors.

Bose-Einstein Condensation in liquid $^4$He near the liquid-solid transition line

We present precision neutron scattering measurements of the Bose-Einstein condensate fraction, n0(T), and the atomic momentum distribution, n\star(k), of liquid 4He at pressure p =24 bar. Both the temperature dependence of n0(T) and of the width of n\star(k) are determined. The n0(T) can be represented by n0(T) = n0(0)[1-(T/Tλ)γ] with a small n0(0) = 2.80\pm0.20% and large γ = 13\pm2 for T < Tλ indicating strong interaction. The onset of BEC is accompanied by a significant narrowing of the n\star(k). The narrowing accounts for 65% of the drop in kinetic energy below Tλ and reveals an important coupling between BEC and k > 0 states. The experimental results are well reproduced by Path Integral Monte Carlo calculations.

Neutron Scattering Studies of spin excitations in hole-doped Ba0.67K0.33Fe2As2 superconductor

We report inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals of superconducting Ba0.67K0.33Fe2As2 (Tc = 38 K). In addition to confirming the resonance previously found in powder samples, we find that spin excitations in the normal state form longitudinally elongated ellipses along the QAFM direction in momentum space, consistent with density functional theory predictions. On cooling below Tc, while the resonance preserves its momentum anisotropy as expected, spin excitations at energies below the resonance become essentially isotropic in the in-plane momentum space and dramatically increase their correlation length. These results suggest that the superconducting gap structures in Ba0.67Ka0.33Fe2As2 are more complicated than those suggested from angle resolved photoemission experiments.

Role of Magnetic Exchange Energy on Charge Ordering in RSFO (R=La, Pr, and Nd)

Inelastic neutron scattering is applied to study the role of magnetism in stabilizing the charge ordered state in \emph{R}$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$ (\emph{R}SFO) (\emph{R} = La, Pr, and Nd). The ratio of the ferromagnetic exchange energy (J$_F$) and antiferromagnetic exchange energy (J$_{AF}$), |J$_F$ /J$_{AF}|, is a key indicator of the stability of the charge ordered and antiferromagnetic ordered state. This ratio is obtained from the spin wave spectrum by inelastic neutron scattering and is sufficiently large to suggest that the magnetic exchange energy alone can stabilize the charge ordered state in La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$ and Pr$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$. The exchange ratio decreases from La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$ to Nd1$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$FeO$_{3}$ which indicates a gradual destabilization of the magnetic exchange mechanism for charge ordering in correspondence with the observed reduction in the ordering temperature.

Antiferromagnetic spin excitations in single crystals of nonsuperconducting Li1-xFeAs

We use neutron scattering to determine spin excitations in single crystals of nonsuperconducting Li1-xFeAs throughout the Brillouin zone. Although angle resolved photoemission experiments and local density approximation calculations suggest poor Fermi surface nesting conditions for antiferromagnetic(AF) order, spin excitations in Li1-xFeAs occur at the AF wave vectors Q = (1, 0) at low energies, but move to wave vectors Q = (\pm 0.5, \pm0.5) near the zone boundary with a total magnetic bandwidth comparable to that of BaFe2As2. These results reveal that AF spin excitations still dominate the low-energy physics of these materials and suggest both itinerancy and strong electron-electron correlations are essential to understand the measured magnetic excitations.

Spin waves in the $(π,0)$ magnetically ordered iron chalcogenide Fe$_{1.05}$Te

We use inelastic neutron scattering to show that the spin waves in the iron chalcogenide Fe$_{1.05}$Te display novel dispersion clearly different from those in the related iron pnictide systems. By fitting the spin waves to a Heisenberg Hamiltonian, we extract magnetic exchange couplings that are dramatically different from both predictions by density functional calculations and measurements on the iron pnictide CaFe$_2$As$_2$. While the nearest-neighbor exchange couplings in CaFe$_2$As$_2$ and Fe$_{1.05}$Te are quite different, their next-nearest-neighbor exchange couplings are similar. These results suggest that superconductivity in the pnictides and chalcogenides share a common magnetic origin that is intimately associated with the next-nearest-neighbor magnetic coupling between the irons.

Evolution of spin excitations into the superconducting state in FeTe1-xSex

The nature of the superconducting state in the recently discovered Fe-based superconductors1-3 is the subject of intense scrutiny. Neutron scattering investigations have already elucidated a strong correlation between magnetism and superconductivity in the form of a spin resonance in the magnetic excitation spectrum4-7. A central unanswered question concerns the nature of the normal state spin fluctuations which may be responsible for the pairing mechanism. Here we show inelastic neutron scattering measurements of Fe1.04Te0.73Se0.27, not superconducting in bulk, and FeTe0.51Se0.49, a bulk superconductor. These measurements demonstrate that the spin fluctuation spectrum is dominated by two-dimensional incommensurate excitations near the (1/2,1/2) (square lattice (pi,0)) wavevector, the wavevector of interest in other Fe-based superconductors, that extend to energies at least as high as 300 meV. Most importantly, the spin excitations in Fe1+yTe1-xSex exhibit four-fold symmetry about the (1,0) (square lattice (pi,pi)) wavevector and are described by the identical wavevector as the normal state spin excitations in the high-TC cuprates8-12 demonstrating a commonality between the magnetism in these classes of materials which perhaps extends to a common origin for superconductivity.

Neutron powder diffraction atomic pair distribution function analysis using the ARCS chopper spectrometer at the Spallation Neutron Source

The frst neutron powder diffraction based atomic pair distribution functions (PDFs) are reported from the new wide angular-range chopper spectrometer ARCS at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. The spectrometer was run in white-beam mode, with no Fermi chopper. The PDF patterns of Si, Ni, and Al2O3 were refined using the PDFfit method and the results compared to data collected at the NPDF diffractometer at Los Alamos National Laboratory. The resulting fits are of high quality demonstrating that quantitatively reliable powder diffraction data can be obtained from ARCS when operated in this configuration.

Spin Excitations in BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 Superconductor Observed by Inelastic Neutron Scattering

Superconductivity appears to compete against the spin-density-wave in Fe pnictides. However, optimally cobalt doped samples show a quasi-two-dimensional spin excitation centered at the (0.5, 0.5, L) wavevector, "the spin resonance peak", that is strongly tied to the onset of superconductivity. By inelastic neutron scattering on single crystals we show the similarities and differences of the spin excitations in BaFe1.84Co0.16As2, with respect to the spin excitations in the high-temperature superconducting cuprates. As in the cuprates the resonance occurs as an enhancement to a part of the spin excitation spectrum which extends to higher energy transfer and higher temperature. However, unlike in the cuprates, the resonance peak in this compound is asymmetric in energy.

Two-dimensional resonant magnetic excitation in BaFe1.84Co0.16As2

Inelastic neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of superconducting BaFe1.84Co0.16As2 reveal a magnetic excitation located at wavevectors (1/2 1/2 L) in tetragonal notation. On cooling below TC, a clear resonance peak is observed at this wavevector with an energy of 8.6(0.5) meV, corresponding to 4.5(0.3) kBTC. This is in good agreement with the canonical value of 5 kBTC observed in the cuprates. The spectrum shows strong dispersion in the tetragonal plane but very weak dispersion along the c-axis, indicating that the magnetic fluctuations are two-dimensional in nature. This is in sharp contrast to the anisotropic three dimensional spin excitations seen in the undoped parent compounds.

Phonon Density of States of LaFeAsO1-xFx

We have studied the phonon density of states (PDOS) in LaFeAsO1-xFx with inelastic neutron scattering methods. The PDOS of the parent compound(x=0) is very similar to the PDOS of samples optimally doped with fluorine to achieve the maximum Tc (x~0.1). Good agreement is found between the experimental PDOS and first-principle calculations with the exception of a small difference in Fe mode frequencies. The PDOS reported here is not consistent with conventional electron-phonon mediated superconductivity.
