Electronic Structure of B-2$pσ$ and $pπ$ States in MgB$_2$, AlB$_2$ and ZrB$_2$ Single Crystals

The effect of electron correlation (EC) on the electronic structure in MgB$_2$, AlB$_2$ and ZrB$_2$, is studied by examining the partial density of states (PDOS) of B-2$pσ$ and $pπ$ orbitals using the polarization dependence of x-ray emission and absorption spectra. The discrepancies between observed and calculated PDOSs cannot be attributed to EC effects. The present results suggest that the EC effect is less than the experimental error ($\sim$ 0.2 eV), which indirectly supports a scenario that electron-phonon interaction plays an essential role in the occurrence of superconductivity.

An angle-resolved soft x-ray spectroscopy study of the electronic states of single crystal MgB2

Angle-resolved soft x-ray measurements made at the boron K-edge in single crystal MgB2 provide new insights into the B-2p local partial density of both unoccupied and occupied band states. The strong variation of absorption with incident angle of exciting x-rays permits the clear separation of contributions from σstates in the boron plane and πstates normal to the plane. A careful comparison with theory accurately determines the energy of selected critical $k$ points in the conduction band. Resonant inelastic x-ray emission at an incident angle of 15 degrees shows a large enhancement of the emission spectra within about 0.5 eV of the Fermi level that is absent at 45 degrees and is much reduced at 60 degrees. We conclude that momentum transferred from the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) process couples empty and filled states across the Fermi level.

Soft x-ray spectroscopy experiments on the near K-edge of B in MB2 (M=Mg, Al, Ta, and Nb)

Soft X-ray absorption and emission measurements are performed for the K- edge of B in MB$_2$ (M=Mg, Al, Ta and Nb). Unique feature of MgB$_2$ with a high density of B 2$p_{xy}(σ)$-state below and above the Fermi edge, which extends to 1 eV above the edge, is confirmed. In contrast, the B 2$p$ density of states in AlB$_2$ and TaB$_2$, both of occupied and unoccupied states, decreased linearly towards the Fermi energy and showed a dip at the Fermi energy. Furthermore, there is a broadening of the peaks with $pσ$-character in XES and XAS of AlB$_2$, which is due to the increase of three dimensionality in the $pσ$-band in AlB$_2$. The DOS of NbB$_2$ has a dip just below the Fermi energy. The present results indicate that the large DOS of B-2$pσ$ states near the Fermi energy are crucial for the superconductivity of MgB$_2$.

Soft x-ray spectroscopy measurements of the p-like density of states of B in MgB2 and evidence for surface boron oxides on exposed surfaces

Soft X-ray absorption and fluorescence measurements are reported for the K-edge of B in MgB2. The measurements confirm a high density of B pxy(sigma)-states at the Fermi edge and extending to approximately 0.9 eV above the edge. A strong resonance is observed in elastic scattering through a core-exciton derived from out-of-plane pz(pi*)-states. Another strong resonance, observed in both elastic and inelastic spectra, is identified as a product of surface boron oxides.

Electronic Structure of Cu_(1-x)Ni_xRh_2S_4 and CuRh_2Se_4: Band Structure Calculations, X-ray Photoemission and Fluorescence Measurements

The electronic structure of spinel-type Cu_(1-x)Ni_xRh_2S_4 (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0) and CuRh_2Se_4 compounds has been studied by means of X-ray photoelectron and fluorescent spectroscopy. Cu L_3, Ni L_3, S L_(2,3) and Se M_(2,3) X-ray emission spectra (XES) were measured near thresholds at Beamline 8.0 of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory's Advanced Light Source. XES measurements of the constituent atoms of these compounds, reduced to the same binding energy scale, are found to be in excellent agreement with XPS valence bands. The calculated XES spectra which include dipole matrix elements show that the partial density of states reproduce experimental spectra quite well. States near the Fermi level (E_F) have strong Rh d and S(Se) p character in all compounds. In NiRh_2S_4 the Ni 3d states contribute strongly at E_F, whereas in both Cu compounds the Cu 3d bands are only ~1 eV wide and centered ~2.5 eV below E_F, leaving very little 3d character at E_F. The density of states at the Fermi level is less in NiRh_2S_4 than in CuRh_2S_4. This difference may contribute to the observed decrease, as a function of Ni concentration, in the superconducting transition temperature in Cu_(1-x)Ni_xRh_2S_4. The density of states of the ordered alloy Cu_(1/2)Ni_(1/2)Rh_2S_4 shows behavior that is more ``split-band''-like than ``rigid band''-like.

Soft X-ray Fluorescence Study of Buried Silicides in Antiferromagnetically Coupled Fe/Si Multilayer

Soft x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy has been employed to obtain information about the Si-derived valence band states of Fe/Si multilayers. The valence band spectra are quite different for films with and without antiferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling, demonstrating that these multilayers have different silicide phases in their spacer layers. Comparison with previously published fluorescence data on bulk iron silicides shows that the Fe concentration in the silicide spacer layers is substantial. Near-edge x-ray absorption data on antiferromagnetically coupled multilayers in combination with the fluorescence data demonstrate unambiguously that the silicide spacer layer in these films is metallic. These results on the electronic structure of buried layers in a multilayer film exemplify the wide range of experiments made possible by new high-brightness synchrotron sources.
