SPTpol: an instrument for CMB polarization measurements with the South Pole Telescope

SPTpol is a dual-frequency polarization-sensitive camera that was deployed on the 10-meter South Pole Telescope in January 2012. SPTpol will measure the polarization anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on angular scales spanning an arcminute to several degrees. The polarization sensitivity of SPTpol will enable a detection of the CMB "B-mode" polarization from the detection of the gravitational lensing of the CMB by large scale structure, and a detection or improved upper limit on a primordial signal due to inflationary gravity waves. The two measurements can be used to constrain the sum of the neutrino masses and the energy scale of inflation. These science goals can be achieved through the polarization sensitivity of the SPTpol camera and careful control of systematics. The SPTpol camera consists of 768 pixels, each containing two transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers coupled to orthogonal polarizations, and a total of 1536 bolometers. The pixels are sensitive to light in one of two frequency bands centered at 90 and 150 GHz, with 180 pixels at 90 GHz and 588 pixels at 150 GHz. The SPTpol design has several features designed to control polarization systematics, including: single-moded feedhorns with low cross-polarization, bolometer pairs well-matched to difference atmospheric signals, an improved ground shield design based on far-sidelobe measurements of the SPT, and a small beam to reduce temperature to polarization leakage. We present an overview of the SPTpol instrument design, project status, and science projections.

Multi-line detection of O2 toward rho Oph A

Models of pure gas-phase chemistry in well-shielded regions of molecular clouds predict relatively high levels of molecular oxygen, O2, and water, H2O. Contrary to expectation, the space missions SWAS and Odin found only very small amounts of water vapour and essentially no O2 in the dense star-forming interstellar medium. Only toward rho Oph A did Odin detect a weak line of O2 at 119 GHz in a beam size of 10 arcmin. A larger telescope aperture such as that of the Herschel Space Observatory is required to resolve the O2 emission and to pinpoint its origin. We use the Heterodyne Instrument for the Far Infrared aboard Herschel to obtain high resolution O2 spectra toward selected positions in rho Oph A. These data are analysed using standard techniques for O2 excitation and compared to recent PDR-like chemical cloud models. The 487.2GHz line was clearly detected toward all three observed positions in rho Oph A. In addition, an oversampled map of the 773.8GHz transition revealed the detection of the line in only half of the observed area. Based on their ratios, the temperature of the O2 emitting gas appears to vary quite substantially, with warm gas (> 50 K) adjacent to a much colder region, where temperatures are below 30 K. The exploited models predict O2 column densities to be sensitive to the prevailing dust temperatures, but rather insensitive to the temperatures of the gas. In agreement with these model, the observationally determined O2 column densities seem not to depend strongly on the derived gas temperatures, but fall into the range N(O2) = (3 to >6)e15/cm^2. Beam averaged O2 abundances are about 5e-8 relative to H2. Combining the HIFI data with earlier Odin observations yields a source size at 119 GHz of about 4 - 5 arcmin, encompassing the entire rho Oph A core.

Intrinsic origin of the two-dimensional electron gas at polar oxide interfaces

The predictions of the polar catastrophe scenario to explain the occurrence of a metallic interface in heterostructures of the solid solution(LaAlO$_3$)$_{x}$(SrTiO$_3$)$_{1-x}$ (LASTO:x) grown on (001) SrTiO$_3$ were investigated as a function of film thickness and $x$. The films are insulating for the thinnest layers, but above a critical thickness, $t_c$, the interface exhibits a constant finite conductivity which depends in a predictable manner on $x$. It is shown that $t_c$ scales with the strength of the built-in electric field of the polar material, and is immediately understandable in terms of an electronic reconstruction at the nonpolar-polar interface. These results thus conclusively identify the polar-catastrophe model as the intrinsic origin of the doping at this polar oxide interface.

The n-tangle of odd n qubits

Coffman, Kundu and Wootters presented the 3-tangle of three qubits in [Phys. Rev. A 61, 052306 (2000)]. Wong and Christensen extended the 3-tangle to even number of qubits, known as $n$-tangle [Phys. Rev. A 63, 044301 (2001)]. In this paper, we propose a generalization of the 3-tangle to any odd $n$-qubit pure states and call it the $n$-tangle of odd $n$ qubits. We show that the $n$-tangle of odd $n$ qubits is invariant under permutations of the qubits, and is an entanglement monotone. The $n$-tangle of odd $n$ qubits can be considered as a natural entanglement measure of any odd $n$-qubit pure states.

Stochastic local operations and classical communication equations and classification of even $n$ qubits

For any even $n$ qubits we establish four SLOCC equations and construct four SLOCC polynomials (not complete) of degree $2^{n/2}$, which can be exploited for SLOCC classification (not complete) of any even $n$ qubits. In light of the SLOCC equations, we propose several different genuine entangled states of even $n$ qubits and show that they are inequivalent to the $|GHZ>$, $|W>$, or $|l,n>$ (the symmetric Dicke states with $l$ excitations) under SLOCC via the vanishing or not of the polynomials. The absolute values of the polynomials can be considered as entanglement measures.

Confirmation of room-temperature long range magnetic order in GaN:Mn

We propose a method for nano-scale characterization of long range magnetic order in diluted magnetic systems to clarify the origins of the room temperature ferromagnetism. The GaN:Mn thin films are grown by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition with the concentration of Ga-substitutional Mn up to 3.8%. Atomic force microscope (AFM) and magnetic force microscope (MFM) characterizations are performed on etched artificial microstructures and natural dislocation pits. Numerical simulations and theoretical analysis on the AFM and MFM data have confirmed the formation of long range magnetic order and ruled out the possibility that nano-clusters contributed to the ferromagnetism. We suggest that delocalized electrons might play a role in the establishment of this long range magnetic order.

Circuit cavity electromechanics in the strong coupling regime

Demonstrating and exploiting the quantum nature of larger, more macroscopic mechanical objects would help us to directly investigate the limitations of quantum-based measurements and quantum information protocols, as well as test long standing questions about macroscopic quantum coherence. The field of cavity opto- and electro-mechanics, in which a mechanical oscillator is parametrically coupled to an electromagnetic resonance, provides a practical architecture for the manipulation and detection of motion at the quantum level. Reaching this quantum level requires strong coupling, interaction timescales between the two systems that are faster than the time it takes for energy to be dissipated. By incorporating a free-standing, flexible aluminum membrane into a lumped-element superconducting resonant cavity, we have increased the single photon coupling strength between radio-frequency mechanical motion and resonant microwave photons by more than two orders of magnitude beyond the current state-of-the-art. A parametric drive tone at the difference frequency between the two resonant systems dramatically increases the overall coupling strength. This has allowed us to completely enter the strong coupling regime. This is evidenced by a maximum normal mode splitting of nearly six bare cavity line-widths. Spectroscopic measurements of these 'dressed states' are in excellent quantitative agreement with recent theoretical predictions. The basic architecture presented here provides a feasible path to ground-state cooling and subsequent coherent control and measurement of the quantum states of mechanical motion.

C$^+$ detection of warm dark gas in diffuse clouds

We present the first results of the Herschel open time key program, Galactic Observations of Terahertz C$^+$ (GOT C+) survey of the [CII] fine-structure line at 1.9 THz (158 microns) using the HIFI instrument on Herschel. We detected 146 interstellar clouds along sixteen lines-of-sight towards the inner Galaxy. We also acquired HI and CO isotopologue data along each line-of-sight for analysis of the physical conditions in these clouds. Here we analyze 29 diffuse clouds (A$_{V}$ < 1.3 mag.) in this sample characterized by having [CII] and HI emission, but no detectable CO. We find that [CII] emission is generally stronger than expected for diffuse atomic clouds, and in a number of sources is much stronger than anticipated based on their HI column density. We show that excess [CII] emission in these clouds is best explained by the presence of a significant diffuse warm H$_2$, dark gas, component. This first [CII] 158 micron detection of warm dark gas demonstrates the value of this tracer for mapping this gas throughout the Milky Way and in galaxies.

Herschel/HIFI discovery of interstellar chloronium (H$_2$Cl$^+$)

We report the first detection of chloronium, H$_2$Cl$^+$, in the interstellar medium, using the HIFI instrument aboard the \emph{Herschel} Space Observatory. The $2_{12}-1_{01}$ lines of ortho-H$_2^{35}$Cl$^+$ and ortho-H$_2^{37}$Cl$^+$ are detected in absorption towards NGC~6334I, and the $1_{11}-0_{00}$ transition of para-H$_2^{35}$Cl$^+$ is detected in absorption towards NGC~6334I and Sgr~B2(S). The H$_2$Cl$^+$ column densities are compared to those of the chemically-related species HCl. The derived HCl/H$_2$Cl$^+$ column density ratios, $\sim$1--10, are within the range predicted by models of diffuse and dense Photon Dominated Regions (PDRs). However, the observed H$_2$Cl$^+$ column densities, in excess of $10^{13}$~cm$^{-2}$, are significantly higher than the model predictions. Our observations demonstrate the outstanding spectroscopic capabilities of HIFI for detecting new interstellar molecules and providing key constraints for astrochemical models.

A simple method of measuring profiles of thin liquid films for microfluidics experiments by means of interference reflection microscopy

A simple method was developed to observe the interference patterns of the light reflected by the interfaces of thin liquid films. Employing a fluorescent microscope with epi-illumination, we collected the 2D patterns of interference fringes containing information of the liquid film topography at microscale. To demonstrate the utility of the proposed visualization method we developed a framework for reconstructing the profiles of liquid films by analysing the reflected interferograms numerically. Both the visualization and reconstruction methods should be useful for variety of microfluidic applications involving the flows with droplets and bubbles in which the knowledge of the topography of the interfacial liquid film is critical.

Tripartite interactions between two phase qubits and a resonant cavity

The creation and manipulation of multipartite entangled states is important for advancements in quantum computation and communication, and for testing our fundamental understanding of quantum mechanics and precision measurements. Multipartite entanglement has been achieved by use of various forms of quantum bits (qubits), such as trapped ions, photons, and atoms passing through microwave cavities. Quantum systems based on superconducting circuits have been used to control pair-wise interactions of qubits, either directly, through a quantum bus, or via controllable coupling. Here, we describe the first demonstration of coherent interactions of three directly coupled superconducting quantum systems, two phase qubits and a resonant cavity. We introduce a simple Bloch-sphere-like representation to help one visualize the unitary evolution of this tripartite system as it shares a single microwave photon. With careful control and timing of the initial conditions, this leads to a protocol for creating a rich variety of entangled states. Experimentally, we provide evidence for the deterministic evolution from a simple product state, through a tripartite W-state, into a bipartite Bell-state. These experiments are another step towards deterministically generating multipartite entanglement in superconducting systems with more than two qubits.

Relationship between the n-tangle and the residual entanglement of even n qubits

We show that $n$-tangle, the generalization of the 3-tangle to even $n$ qubits, is the square of the SLOCC polynomial invariant of degree 2. We find that the $n$-tangle is not the residual entanglement for any even $n\geq 4$\ qubits. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the vanishing of the concurrence $C_{1(2...n)}$. The condition implies that the concurrence $% C_{1(2...n)}$ is always positive for any entangled states while the $n$% -tangle vanishes for some entangled states. We argue that for even $n$\ qubits, the concurrence $C_{1(2...n)}$\ is equal to or greater than the $n$% -tangle. Further,\ we reveal that the residual entanglement is a partial measure for product states of any $n$ qubits while the $n$-tangle is multiplicative for some product states.

RFSQUID-Mediated Coherent Tunable Coupling Between a Superconducting Phase Qubit and a Lumped Element Resonator

We demonstrate coherent tunable coupling between a superconducting phase qubit and a lumped element resonator. The coupling strength is mediated by a flux-biased RF SQUID operated in the non-hysteretic regime. By tuning the applied flux bias to the RF SQUID we change the effective mutual inductance, and thus the coupling energy, between the phase qubit and resonator . We verify the modulation of coupling strength from 0 to $100 MHz$ by observing modulation in the size of the splitting in the phase qubit's spectroscopy, as well as coherently by observing modulation in the vacuum Rabi oscillation frequency when on resonance. The measured spectroscopic splittings and vacuum Rabi oscillations agree well with theoretical predictions.

Performance of Equal Phase-Shift Search for One Iteration

Grover presented the phase-shift search by replacing the selective inversions by selective phase shifts of $π/3$. In this paper, we investigate the phase-shift search with general equal phase shifts. We show that for small uncertainties, the failure probability of the Phase-$π/3$ search is smaller than the general phase-shift search and for large uncertainties, the success probability of the large phase-shift search is larger than the Phase-$π/3$ search. Therefore, the large phase-shift search is suitable for large-size of databases.

SLOCC classification for nine families of four-qubits

In Phys. Rev. A 62, 062314 (2000), Dür, Vidal and Cirac indicated that there are infinitely many SLOCC classes for four qubits. Verstraete, Dehaene, and Verschelde in Phys. Rev. A 65, 052112 (2002) proposed nine families of states corresponding to nine different ways of entangling four qubits. In Phys. Rev. A 75, 022318 (2007), Lamata et al. reported that there are eight true SLOCC entanglement classes of four qubits up to permutations of the qubits. In this paper, we investigate SLOCC classification of the nine families proposed by Verstraete, Dehaene and Verschelde, and distinguish 49 true SLOCC entanglement classes from them.

Atom-number squeezing and bipartite entanglement of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates: analytical results

We investigate spin dynamics of a two-component Bose-Einstein condensates with weak Josephson coupling. Analytical expressions of atom-number squeezing and bipartite entanglement are presented for atom-atom repulsive interactions. For attractive interactions, there is no number squeezing; however, the squeezing parameter is still useful to recognize the appearance of Schrödinger's cat state.
