ALMA and Herschel reveal that X-ray selected AGN and main-sequence galaxies have different star formation rate distributions

Using deep Herschel and ALMA observations, we investigate the star formation rate (SFR) distributions of X-ray selected AGN host galaxies at 0.5<z<1.5 and 1.5<z<4, comparing them to that of normal, star-forming (i.e., "main-sequence", or MS) galaxies. We find 34--55 per cent of AGNs in our sample have SFRs at least a factor of two below that of the average MS galaxy, compared to ~15 per cent of all MS galaxies, suggesting significantly different SFR distributions. Indeed, when both are modelled as log-normal distributions, the mass and redshift-normalised SFR distributions of X-ray AGNs are roughly twice as broad, and peak ~0.4 dex lower, than that of MS galaxies. However, like MS galaxies, the normalised SFR distribution of AGNs in our sample appears not to evolve with redshift. Despite X-ray AGNs and MS galaxies having different SFR distributions, the linear-mean SFR of AGNs derived from our distributions is remarkably consistent with that of MS galaxies, and thus with previous results derived from stacked Herschel data. This apparent contradiction is due to the linear-mean SFR being biased by bright outliers, and thus does not necessarily represent a true characterisation of the typical SFR of X-ray AGNs.

CO excitation of normal star forming galaxies out to z=1.5 as regulated by the properties of their interstellar medium

We investigate the CO excitation of normal star forming disk galaxies at z=1.5 using IRAM PdBI observations of the CO[2-1], CO[3-2] and CO[5-4] transitions for 4 galaxies, including VLA observations of CO[1-0] for 3 of them, with the aim of constraining the average state of H2 gas. Exploiting prior knowledge of the velocity range, spatial extent and size of the CO emission we measure reliable line fluxes with S/N>4-7 for individual transitions. While the average CO Spectral Line Energy Distribution (SLED) has a sub-thermal excitation similar to the Milky Way (MW) up to CO[3-2], we show that the average CO[5-4] emission is four times stronger than assuming MW excitation. This demonstrates the presence of an additional component of more excited, denser and possibly warmer molecular gas. The ratio of CO[5-4] to lower-J CO emission is lower than in local (U)LIRGs and high-redshift SMGs, correlating closely with the average intensity of the radiation field and with the star formation surface density, but not with the SF efficiency (SFE). The CO[5-4] luminosity correlates linearly with LIR over 4 orders of magnitudes, with z=1.5 BzK galaxies following the same trend as local spirals and (U)LIRGs and high redshift star bursting SMGs. The CO[5-4] luminosity is thus empirically related to the dense gas, and might be a more convenient way to probe it than standard high--density tracers that are much fainter than CO. We see excitation variations among our sample galaxies, that can be linked to their evolutionary state and clumpiness in optical rest frame images. In one galaxy we see spatially resolved excitation variations, where the more highly excited part of the galaxy corresponds to the location of massive SF clumps. This supports to models that suggest that giant clumps are the main source of the high excitation CO emission in high redshift disk-like galaxies.

Scalable numerical approach for the steady-state ab initio laser theory

We present an efficient and flexible method for solving the non-linear lasing equations of the steady-state ab initio laser theory. Our strategy is to solve the underlying system of partial differential equations directly, without the need of setting up a parametrized basis of constant flux states. We validate this approach in one-dimensional as well as in cylindrical systems, and demonstrate its scalability to full-vector three-dimensional calculations in photonic-crystal slabs. Our method paves the way for efficient and accurate simulations of lasing structures which were previously inaccessible.

Large and robust electrical spin injection into GaAs at zero magnetic field using an ultrathin CoFeB/MgO injector

We demonstrate a large electrical spin injection into GaAs at zero magnetic field thanks to an ultrathin perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB contact of a few atomic planes (1.2 nm). The spin-polarization of electrons injected into GaAs was examined by the circular polarization of electroluminescence from a Spin Light Emitting Diode with embedded InGaAs/GaAs quantum wells. The electroluminescence polarization as a function of the magnetic field closely traces the out-of-plane magnetization of the CoFeB/MgO injector. A circular polarization degree of the emitted light as large as 20% at 25 K is achieved at zero magnetic field. Moreover the electroluminescence circular polarization is still about 8% at room temperature.

Demonstration of Achromatic Cold-Neutron Microscope Utilizing Axisymmetric Focusing Mirrors

An achromatic cold-neutron microscope with magnification 4 is demonstrated. The image-forming optics is composed of nested coaxial mirrors of full figures of revolution, so-called Wolter optics. The spatial resolution, field of view, and depth of focus are measured and found consistent with ray-tracing simulations. Methods of increasing the resolution and magnification are discussed, as well as the scientific case for the neutron microscope. In contrast to traditional pinhole-camera neutron imaging, the resolution of the microscope is determined by the mirrors rather than by the collimation of the beam, leading to possible dramatic improvements in the signal rate and resolution.

Neutral Particle Analyzer for Studies of Fast Ion Population in Plasma

Advanced neutral particles analyzer for plasma diagnostic with possibility of simultaneous measurements of energy distributions of D and H ions has developed in the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics. The analyzer was used in two plasma facilities with injection of fast neutrals - on the MST reversed field pinch (University of Wisconsin) and the field reversed configuration C-2 (Tri Alpha Energy). In this paper, the design of the analyzer, calculation of efficiency of registration, results of analyzer calibration and experimental results from MST and C-2 experiments are presented

Modeling Social Networks with Overlapping Communities Using Hypergraphs and Their Line Graphs

We propose that hypergraphs can be used to model social networks with overlapping communities. The nodes of the hypergraphs represent the communities. The hyperlinks of the hypergraphs denote the individuals who may participate in multiple communities. The hypergraphs are not easy to analyze, however, the line graphs of hypergraphs are simple graphs or weighted graphs, so that the network theory can be applied. We define the overlapping depth $k$ of an individual by the number of communities that overlap in that individual, and we prove that the minimum adjacency eigenvalue of the corresponding line graph is not smaller than $-k_{max}$, which is the maximum overlapping depth of the whole network. Based on hypergraphs with preferential attachment, we establish a network model which incorporates overlapping communities with tunable overlapping parameters $k$ and $w$. By comparing with the Hyves social network, we show that our social network model possesses high clustering, assortative mixing, power-law degree distribution and short average path length.

Reverse Line Graph Construction: The Matrix Relabeling Algorithm MARINLINGA Versus Roussopoulos's Algorithm

We propose a new algorithm MARINLINGA for reverse line graph computation, i.e., constructing the original graph from a given line graph. Based on the completely new and simpler principle of link relabeling and endnode recognition, MARINLINGA does not rely on Whitney's theorem while all previous algorithms do. MARINLINGA has a worst case complexity of O(N^2), where N denotes the number of nodes of the line graph. We demonstrate that MARINLINGA is more time-efficient compared to Roussopoulos's algorithm, which is well-known for its efficiency.

Spectral Perturbation and Reconstructability of Complex Networks

In recent years, many network perturbation techniques, such as topological perturbations and service perturbations, were employed to study and improve the robustness of complex networks. However, there is no general way to evaluate the network robustness. In this paper, we propose a new global measure for a network, the reconstructability coefficient θ, defined as the maximum number of eigenvalues that can be removed, subject to the condition that the adjacency matrix can be reconstructed exactly. Our main finding is that a linear scaling law, E[θ]=aN, seems universal, in that it holds for all networks that we have studied.

The On-Orbit Performance of the Galaxy Evolution Explorer

We report the first year on-orbit performance results for the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX), a NASA Small Explorer that is performing a survey of the sky in two ultraviolet bands. The instrument comprises a 50 cm diameter modified Ritchey-Chretien telescope with a 1.25 degree field of view, selectable imaging and objective grism spectroscopic modes, and an innovative optical system with a thin-film multilayer dichroic beam splitter that enables simultaneous imaging by a pair of photon counting, microchannel plate, delay line readout detectors. Initial measurements demonstrate that GALEX is performing well, meeting its requirements for resolution, efficiency, astrometry, bandpass definition and survey sensitivity.

The gauge technique for heavy quarks

It is possible to determine a propapagator for heavy quarks to order 1/m in any covariant gauge, which applies universally to all quarks, by using the gauge technique. The leading behaviour is given by a _0F_2 function and the result is reliable in the infrared limit, accounting for soft-gluon corrections to the quark in internal loops.

Estimates of B-decays into K-Resonances and Dileptons

Short and long distance contributions to the exclusive B-decays into various K-resonances and dileptons, i.e. B --> Ki l l ( l = e, mu , nu ), are examined. The heavy quark effective theory has been used to calculate the hadronic matrix elements. Substantial branching fractions are obtained for the dileptonic B-decays into some higher excited states of K-mesons. The long distance (resonance) contributions to these exclusive rare B-decay modes dominate the short distance contributions mostly by two orders of magnitude. It is pointed out that, excluding the resonance contributions, the P-wave channels are dominant, accounting for about 50% of the inclusive B --> X_s l l branching fraction.
