Study of psi(2S) Decays to gamma p bar{p}, pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} and Search for p bar{p} Threshold Enhancements

The decays of psi(2S) into gamma p bar{p}, pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} have been studied with the CLEO-c detector using a sample of 24.5 million psi(2S) events obtained from e^+e^- annihilations at sqrt{s} = 3686 MeV. The data show evidence for the excitation of several N^* resonances in p pi^0 and p eta channels in pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} decays, and f_2 states in gamma p bar{p} decay. Branching fractions for decays of psi(2S) to gamma p bar{p}, pi^0 p bar{p} and eta p bar{p} have been determined. No evidence for p bar{p} threshold enhancements was found in the reactions psi(2S)-> X p bar{p}, where X = gamma, pi^0, eta. We do, however, find confirming evidence for a p bar{p} threshold enhancement in J/psi-> gamma p bar{p} as previously reported by BES.

Branching fractions for chi_cJ -> p p-bar pi^0, p p-bar eta, and p p-bar omega

Using a sample of 25.9 million psi(2S) decays acquired with the CLEO-c detector at the CESR e^+e^- collider, we report branching fractions for the decays chi_cJ -> p p-bar pi^0, p p-bar eta, and p p-bar omega, with J=0,1,2. Our results for B(chi_cJ-> p p-bar pi^0) and B(chi_cJ-> p p-bar eta) are consistent with, but more precise than, previous measurements. Furthermore, we include the first measurement of B(chi_cJ-> p p-bar omega).

Analysis of D+ to K- pi+ e+ nu_e and D+ to K- pi+ mu+ nu_mu Semileptonic Decays

Using a large sample (~11800 events) of D^+ into K^- pi^+ e^+ nu_e and D^+ into K^- pi^+ mu^+ nu_mu decays collected by the CLEO-c detector running at the psi(3770), we measure the helicity basis form factors free from the assumptions of spectroscopic pole dominance and provide new, accurate measurements of the absolute branching fractions for D^+ into K^- pi^+ e^+ nu_e and D^+ into K^- pi^+ mu^+ nu_mu decays. We find branching fractions which are consistent with previous world averages. Our measured helicity basis form factors are consistent with the spectroscopic pole dominance predictions for the three main helicity basis form factors describing D^+ into anti-K*0 ell^+ nu_mu decay. The ability to analyze D^+ into K^- pi^+ mu^+ nu_mu allows us to make the first non-parametric measurements of the mass-suppressed form factor. Our result is inconsistent with existing Lattice QCD calculations. Finally, we measure the form factor that controls non-resonant s-wave interference with the D^+ into anti-K*0 ell^+ nu_mu amplitude and search for evidence of possible additional non-resonant d-wave or f-wave interference with the anti-K*0.

Prospects for Observing the Standard Model Higgs Boson Decaying into b\bar{b} Final States Produced in Weak Boson Fusion with an Associated Photon at the LHC

One of the primary goals of the Large Hadron Collider is to understand the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism. In the Standard Model, electroweak symmetry breaking is described by the Higgs mechanism which includes a scalar Higgs boson. Electroweak measurements constrain the Standard Model Higgs boson mass to be in the 114.4 to 157 GeV/c^2 range. Within this mass window, the Higgs predominantly decays into two b-quarks. As such, we investigate the prospect of observing the Standard Model Higgs decaying to b\bar{b} produced in weak-boson-fusion with an associated central photon. An isolated, high pt, central photon trigger is expected to be available at the ATLAS and CMS experiments. In this study, we investigated the effects originating from showering, hadronization, the underlying event model, and jet performance including b-jet calibration on the sensitivity of this channel. We found that the choice of Monte Carlo and Monte Carlo tune has a large effect on the efficacy of the central jet veto and consequently the signal significance. A signal significance of about 1.86 can be achieved for m(Higgs)=115 GeV/c^2 with 100 1/fb of integrated luminosity which correspond to one year at design luminosity at 14 TeV pp collisions.

Flavor Physics in the Quark Sector

One of the major challenges of particle physics has been to gain an in-depth understanding of the role of quark flavor and measurements and theoretical interpretations of their results have advanced tremendously: apart from masses and quantum numbers of flavor particles, there now exist detailed measurements of the characteristics of their interactions allowing stringent tests of Standard Model predictions. Among the most interesting phenomena of flavor physics is the violation of the CP symmetry that has been subtle and difficult to explore. Till early 1990s observations of CP violation were confined to neutral $K$ mesons, but since then a large number of CP-violating processes have been studied in detail in neutral $B$ mesons. In parallel, measurements of the couplings of the heavy quarks and the dynamics for their decays in large samples of $K, D$, and $B$ mesons have been greatly improved in accuracy and the results are being used as probes in the search for deviations from the Standard Model. In the near future, there will be a transition from the current to a new generation of experiments, thus a review of the status of quark flavor physics is timely. This report summarizes the results of the current generation of experiments that is about to be completed and it confronts these results with the theoretical understanding of the field.

Measurement of the eta_b(1S) mass and the branching fraction for Upsilon(3S) --> gamma eta_b(1S)

We report evidence for the ground state of bottomonium, eta_b(1S), in the radiative decay Upsilon(3S) --> gamma eta_b in e^+e^- annihilation data taken with the CLEO III detector. Using 6 million Upsilon(3S) decays, and assuming Gamma(eta_b) = 10 MeV/c^2, we obtain B(Upsilon(3S) --> gamma eta_b) = (7.1 +- 1.8 +- 1.1) X 10^{-4}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. The statistical significance is about 4 sigma. The mass is determined to be M(eta_b) = 9391.8 +- 6.6 +- 2.0 MeV/c^2, which corresponds to the hyperfine splitting Delta M_{hf}(1S)_b = 68.5 +- 6.6 +- 2.0 MeV/c^2. Using 9 million Upsilon(2S) decays, we place an upper limit on the corresponding Y(2S) decay, B(Y(2S) --> gamma eta_b) < 8.4 X 10^{-4} at 90 % confidence level.

Determination of the D0 -> K+pi- Relative Strong Phase Using Quantum-Correlated Measurements in e+e- -> D0 D0bar at CLEO

We exploit the quantum coherence between pair-produced D0 and D0bar in psi(3770) decays to study charm mixing, which is characterized by the parameters x and y, and to make a first determination of the relative strong phase δbetween doubly Cabibbo-suppressed D0 -> K+pi- and Cabibbo-favored D0bar -> K+pi-. We analyze a sample of 1.0 million D0D0bar pairs from 281 pb^-1 of e+e- collision data collected with the CLEO-c detector at E_cm = 3.77 GeV. By combining CLEO-c measurements with branching fraction input and time-integrated measurements of R_M = (x^2+y^2)/2 and R_{WS} = Gamma(D0 -> K+pi-)/Gamma(D0bar -> K+pi-) from other experiments, we find \cosδ= 1.03 +0.31-0.17 +- 0.06, where the uncertainties are statistical and systematic, respectively. In addition, by further including external measurements of charm mixing parameters, we obtain an alternate measurement of \cosδ= 1.10 +- 0.35 +- 0.07, as well as x\sinδ= (4.4 +2.7-1.8 +- 2.9) x 10^-3 and δ= 22 +11-12 +9-11 degrees.

New Measurement of Exclusive Decays of the chi_c0 and chi_c2 to Two-Meson Final States

Using a sample of 2.59 times 10^7 psi(2S) decays collected by the CLEO--c detector, we present results of a study of chi_{c0} and chi_{c2} decays into two-meson final states. We present the world's most precise measurements of the chi_{cJ,(J=0,2)} -> pi^+pi^-, pi^0 pi^0, K^+K^-, K^0_S K^0_S, eta eta and eta^{prime} eta^{prime} branching fractions, and a search for chi_c decays into eta eta^{prime}. These results shed light on the mechanism of charmonium decays into pseudoscalar mesons.

Physics at BES-III

This physics book provides detailed discussions on important topics in $τ$-charm physics that will be explored during the next few years at \bes3 . Both theoretical and experimental issues are covered, including extensive reviews of recent theoretical developments and experimental techniques. Among the subjects covered are: innovations in Partial Wave Analysis (PWA), theoretical and experimental techniques for Dalitz-plot analyses, analysis tools to extract absolute branching fractions and measurements of decay constants, form factors, and CP-violation and \DzDzb-oscillation parameters. Programs of QCD studies and near-threshold tau-lepton physics measurements are also discussed.

Observation of chi-b(1PJ,2PJ) decays to light hadrons

Analyzing $Υ(nS)$ decays acquired with the CLEO detector operating at the CESR $e^+e^-$ collider, we measure for the first time the product branching fractions ${\cal B}[Υ(nS)\toγχ_{b}((n-1)P_J)] \times {\cal B}[χ_{b}(n-1)P_J)\to X_i]$ for $n=2$ and 3, where $X_i$ denotes, for each $i$, one of the fourteen exclusive light-hadron final states for which we observe significant signals in both $χ_b(1P_J)$ and $χ_b(2P_J)$ decays. We also determine upper limits for the electric dipole (E1) transitions $Υ(3S) \to γχ_b(1P_J)$.

B, D and K decays

With the advent of the LHC, we will be able to probe New Physics (NP) up to energy scales almost one order of magnitude larger than it has been possible with present accelerator facilities. While direct detection of new particles will be the main avenue to establish the presence of NP at the LHC, indirect searches will provide precious complementary information, since most probably it will not be possible to measure the full spectrum of new particles and their couplings through direct production. In particular, precision measurements and computations in the realm of flavour physics are expected to play a key role in constraining the unknown parameters of the Lagrangian of any NP model emerging from direct searches at the LHC. The aim of Working Group 2 was twofold: on one hand, to provide a coherent, up-to-date picture of the status of flavour physics before the start of the LHC; on the other hand, to initiate activities on the path towards integrating information on NP from high-pT and flavour data.

Time-Independent Measurements of D0-D0bar Mixing and Relative Strong Phases Using Quantum Correlations

Due to quantum correlations in the C=-1 and C=+1 D0 D0bar pairs produced in the reactions e+ e- --> D0 D0bar (n pi0) and e+ e- --> D0 D0bar gamma (n pi0), respectively, the time-integrated D0 D0bar decay rates are sensitive to interference between amplitudes for indistinguishable final states. The size of this interference is governed by the relevant amplitude ratios and can include contributions from D0-D0bar mixing. We present a method for simultaneously measuring the magnitudes and phases of these amplitude ratios and searching for D0-D0bar mixing. We make use of fully- and partially-reconstructed D0 D0bar pairs in both C eigenstates. Our method is insensitive to CP violation, and we estimate experimental sensitivities based on a plausible charm factory dataset. Similar analyses can be applied to coherent K0 K0bar, B0 B0bar, or Bs Bsbar pairs.

A Study of Exclusive Charmless Semileptonic B Decays and Extraction of |V_{ub}| at CLEO

We have studied semileptonic B decay to the exclusive charmless states pi, rho/omega, eta and eta' using the full 15.5 fb^-1 CLEO Upsilon(4S) sample, with measurements performed in subregions of phase space to minimize dependence on a priori knowledge of the form factors involved. We find total branching fractions B(B^0 -> pi^-l^+nu) = (1.37 +- 0.15_stat +- 0.11_sys) x 10^-4 and B(B^0 -> rho^- l^+ nu) = (2.93 +- 0.37_stat +- 0.37_sys) x 10^-4. We find evidence for B^+ -> eta' l^+ nu, with B(B^+ -> eta' l^+ nu) = (2.66 +- 0.80_stat +- 0.56_sys) x 10^-4 and 1.20 x 10^-4 < B(B^+ -> eta' l^+ nu) < 4.46 x 10^-4 (90% CL). We also limit B(B^+ -> eta l^+ nu) < 1.01 x 10^-4 (90% CL). By combining our B -> pi l nu information with unquenched lattice calculations, we find |V_ub| = (3.6 +- 0.4 +- 0.2 +0.6 -0.4) x 10^-3, where the errors are statistical, experimental systematic, and theoretical systematic, respectively.

Search for D^0 - barD^0 Mixing in the Dalitz Plot Analysis of D^0 --> K_S^0 pi^+ pi^-

The resonant substructure in D0 --> K0S pi+ pi- decays is described by a combination of ten quasi two-body intermediate states which include both CP-even and CP-odd eigenstates and one doubly-Cabibbo suppressed channel. We present a formalism that connects the variation in D0 decay time over the Dalitz plot with the mixing parameters, x and y, that describe off-shell and on-shell D0-D0B mixing. We analyze the CLEO II.V data sample and find the parameters x and y are consistent with zero. We limit (-4.7 < x < 8.6)% and (-6.1 < y < 3.5)% at the 95\% confidence level

Anti-Deuteron Production in Upsilon(nS) Decays and the Nearby Continuum

Using CLEO data, we study the production of the anti-deuteron, d-bar, in Upsilon(nS) resonance decays and the nearby continuum. The branching ratios obtained are B^dir(Upsilon(1S) --> d-bar X) = (3.36 +- 0.23 +- 0.25) x 10^-5, B(Upsilon(1S) --> d-bar X) = (2.86 +- 0.19 +- 0.21) x 10^-5, and B(Upsilon(2S) --> d-bar X) = (3.37 +- 0.50 +- 0.25) x 10^-5, where the `dir' superscript indicates that decays produced via re-annihilation of the b bbar pair to a gamma* are removed from both the signal and the normalizing number of Upsilon(1S) decays in order to isolate direct decays of the Upsilon(1S) to ggg, gg gamma. Upper limits at 90% CL are given for B(Upsilon(4S) --> d-bar X) < 1.3 x 10^-5, and continuum production σ(e^+e^- --> d-bar X) < 0.031 pb. The Upsilon(2S) data is also used to extract a limit on chi_bJ --> d-bar X. The results indicate enhanced deuteron production in ggg, gg gamma hadronization compared to gamma* --> q qbar. Baryon number compensation is also investigated with the large Upsilon(1S) --> d-bar X sample.

We obtain M(eta_{c}^{prime})=3642.9 pm 3.1(stat) pm1.5(syst) MeV, and M(eta_{c})=2981.8 pm1.3(stat) pm 1.5(syst) MeV. The corresponding values of hyperfine splittings between ^{1}S_{0} and ^{3}S_{1} states are ΔM_{hf}(1S)=115.1 pm 2.0 MeV, Delta M_{hf}(2S)=43.1 pm3.4 MeV. Assuming that the eta_{c} and eta_{c}^{prime} have equal branching fractions to K_{S}K pi, we obtain Gamma_{gamma gamma}(eta_{c}^{prime})=1.3 pm 0.6 keV.

Search for CP Violation in D^0--> K_S^0 pi^+pi^-

We report on a search for CP violation in the decay of D0 and D0B to Kshort pi+pi-. The data come from an integrated luminosity of 9.0 1/fb of e+e- collisions at sqrt(s) ~ 10 GeV recorded with the CLEO II.V detector. The resonance substructure of this decay is well described by ten quasi-two-body decay channels (K*-pi+, K*0(1430)-pi+, K*2(1430)-pi+, K*(1680)-pi+, Kshort rho, Kshort omega, Kshort f0(980), Kshort f2(1270), Kshort f0(1370), and the ``wrong sign'' K*+ pi-) plus a small non-resonant component. We observe no evidence for CP violation in the amplitudes and phases that describe the decay D0 to K_S^0 pi+pi-.
