Single Quantum Level Electron Turnstile

We report on the realization of a single-electron source, where current is transported through a single-level quantum dot (Q), tunnel-coupled to two superconducting leads (S). When driven with an ac gate voltage, the experiment demonstrates electron turnstile operation. Compared to the more conventional superconductor - normal metal - superconductor turnstile, our SQS device presents a number of novel properties, including higher immunity to the unavoidable presence of non-equilibrium quasiparticles in superconducting leads. In addition, we demonstrate its ability to deliver electrons with a very narrow energy distribution.

Multiple magneto-phonon resonances in graphene

Our low-temperature magneto-Raman scattering measurements performed on graphene-like locations on the surface of bulk graphite reveal a new series of magneto-phonon resonances involving both K-point and Gamma-point phonons. In particular, we observe for the first time the resonant splitting of three crossing excitation branches. We give a detailed theoretical analysis of these new resonances. Our results highlight the role of combined excitations and the importance of multi-phonon processes (from both K and Gamma points) for the relaxation of hot carriers in graphene.

Giant mesoscopic fluctuations of the elastic cotunneling thermopower of a single-electron transistor

We study the thermoelectric transport of a small metallic island weakly coupled to two electrodes by tunnel junctions. In the Coulomb blockade regime, in the case when the ground state of the system corresponds to an even number of electrons on the island, the main mechanism of electron transport at lowest temperatures is elastic cotunneling. In this regime, the transport coefficients strongly depend on the realization of the random impurity potential or the shape of the island. Using the random-matrix theory, we calculate the thermopower and the thermoelectric kinetic coefficient and study the statistics of their mesoscopic fluctuations in the elastic cotunneling regime. The fluctuations of the thermopower turn out to be much larger than the average value.

Landau level spectroscopy of electron-electron interactions in graphene

We present magneto-Raman scattering studies of electronic inter Landau level excitations in quasi-neutral graphene samples with different strengths of Coulomb interaction. The band velocity associated with these excitations is found to depend on the dielectric environment, on the index of Landau level involved, and to vary as a function of the magnetic field. This contradicts the single-particle picture of non-interacting massless Dirac electrons, but is accounted for by theory when the effect of electron-electron interaction is taken into account. Raman active, zero-momentum inter Landau level excitations in graphene are sensitive to electron-electron interactions due to the non-applicability of the Kohn theorem in this system, with a clearly non-parabolic dispersion relation.

Electrical switch to the resonant magneto-phonon effect in graphene

We report a comprehensive study of the tuning with electric fields of the resonant magneto-exciton optical phonon coupling in gated graphene. For magnetic fields around $B \sim 25$ T which correspond to the range of the fundamental magneto-phonon resonance, the electron-phonon coupling can be switched on and off by tuning the position of the Fermi level in order to Pauli block the two fundamental inter Landau level excitations. The effects of such a profound change in the electronic excitation spectrum are traced through investigations of the optical phonon response in polarization resolved magneto-Raman scattering experiments. We report on the observation of a splitting of the phonon feature with satellite peaks developing, at particular values of the Landau level filling factor, on the low or on the high energy side of the phonon, depending on the relative energy of the discrete electronic excitation and of the optical phonon. Shifts of the phonon energy as large as $\pm60$ cm$^{-1}$ are observed close to the resonance. The intraband electronic excitation, the cyclotron resonance, is shown to play a relevant role in the observed spectral evolution of the phonon response.

Kinetic theory of nonlinear diffusion in a weakly disordered nonlinear Schrödinger chain in the regime of homogeneous chaos

We study the discrete nonlinear Schröinger equation with weak disorder, focusing on the regime when the nonlinearity is, on the one hand, weak enough for the normal modes of the linear problem to remain well resolved, but on the other, strong enough for the dynamics of the normal mode amplitudes to be chaotic for almost all modes. We show that in this regime and in the limit of high temperature, the macroscopic density $ρ$ satisfies the nonlinear diffusion equation with a density-dependent diffusion coefficient, $D(ρ)=D_0ρ^2$. An explicit expression for $D_0$ is obtained in terms of the eigenfunctions and eigenvalues of the linear problem, which is then evaluated numerically. The role of the second conserved quantity (energy) in the transport is also quantitatively discussed.

3D massless Kane fermions observed in a zinc-blende crystal

Solid state physics and quantum electrodynamics with its ultra-relativistic (massless) particles meet, to their mutual beneit, in the electronic properties of one-dimensional carbon nanotubes as well as two-dimensional graphene or surfaces of topological insulators. However, clear experimental evidence for electronic states with conical dispersion relations in all three dimensions, conceivable in certain bulk materials, is still missing. In the present work, we fabricate and study a zinc-blend crystal, HgCdTe, at the point of the semiconductor-to-semimetal topological transition. Three-dimensional massless electrons with a velocity of about 10$^6$ m/s are observed in this material, as testifed by: (i) the dynamical conductivity which increases linearly with the photon frequency, (ii) in a magnetic field $B$, by a $\sqrt{B}$ dependence of dipole-active inter-Landau-level resonances and (iii) the spin splitting of Landau levels, which follows a $\sqrt{B}$ dependence, typical of ultra-relativistic particles but not really seen in any other electronic system so far.

Disordered Josephson junction chains: Anderson localization of normal modes and impedance fluctuations

We study the properties of the normal modes of a chain of Josephson junctions in the simultaneous presence of disorder and absorption. We consider the superconducting regime of small phase fluctuations and focus on the case where the effects of disorder and absorption can be treated additively. We analyze the frequency shift and the localization length of the modes. We also calculate the distribution of the frequency-dependent impedance of the chain. The distribution is Gaussian if the localization length is long compared to the absorption length; it has a power law tail in the opposite limit.

Effect of anisotropic band curvature on carrier multiplication in graphene

We study relaxation of an excited electron in the conduction band of intrinsic graphene at zero temperature due to production of interband electron-hole pairs. The electronic band curvature, being anisotropic because of trigonal warping, is shown to suppress relaxation for a range of directions of the initial electron momentum. For other directions, relaxation is allowed only if the curvature exceeds a finite critical value; otherwise, a non-decaying quasiparticle state is found to exist.

Probing the band structure of quadri-layer graphene with magneto-phonon resonance

We show how the magneto-phonon resonance, particularly pronounced in sp2 carbon allotropes, can be used as a tool to probe the band structure of multilayer graphene specimens. Even when electronic excitations cannot be directly observed, their coupling to the E2g phonon leads to pronounced oscillations of the phonon feature observed through Raman scattering experiments with multiple periods and amplitudes detemined by the electronic excitation spectrum. Such experiment and analysis have been performed up to 28T on an exfoliated 4-layer graphene specimen deposited on SiO2, and the observed oscillations correspond to the specific AB stacked 4-layer graphene electronic excitation spectrum.

On the local nature and scaling of chaos in weakly nonlinear disordered chains

The dynamics of a disordered nonlinear chain can be either regular or chaotic with a certain probability. The chaotic behavior is often associated with the destruction of Anderson localization by the nonlinearity. In the presentwork it is argued that at weak nonlinearity chaos is nucleated locally on rare resonant segments of the chain. Based on this picture, the probability of chaos is evaluated analytically. The same probability is also evaluated by direct numerical sampling of disorder realizations and quantitative agreement between the two results is found.

Cyclotron motion in the vicinity of a Lifshitz transition in graphite

Graphite, a model (semi)metal with trigonally warped bands, is investigated with magneto-absorption experiment and viewed as an electronic system in the vicinity of the Lifshitz transition. A characteristic pattern of up to twenty cyclotron resonance harmonics has been observed. This large number of resonances, their relative strengths and characteristic shapes trace the universal properties of the electronic states near a separatrix in the momentum space. Quantum-mechanical perturbative methods with respect to the trigonal warping term hardly describe the data which are, on the other hand, fairly well reproduced within a quasi-classical approach and conventional band structure model. Trigonal symmetry is preserved in graphite in contrast to a similar system, bilayer graphene.

Electronic excitations and electron-phonon coupling in bulk graphite through Raman scattering in high magnetic fields

We use polarized magneto-Raman scattering to study purely electronic excitations and the electron-phonon coupling in bulk graphite. At a temperature of 4.2 K and in magnetic fields up to 28 T we observe $K$-point electronic excitations involving Landau bands with $Δ|n|=0$ and with $Δ|n|=\pm2$ that can be selected by controlling the angular momentum of the excitation laser and of the scattered light. The magneto-phonon effect involving the $E_{2g}$ optical phonon and $K$-point inter Landau bands electronic excitations with $Δ|n|=\pm1$ is revealed and analyzed within a model taking into account the full $k_z$ dispersion. These polarization resolved results are explained in the frame of the Slonczewski-Weiss-McClure (SWM) model which directly allows to quantify the electron-hole asymmetry.

Weak chaos in the disordered nonlinear Schroedinger chain: destruction of Anderson localization by Arnold diffusion

The subject of this study is the long-time equilibration dynamics of a strongly disordered one-dimensional chain of coupled weakly anharmonic classical oscillators. It is argued that chaos in this system has a very particular spatial structure: it can be viewed as a dilute gas of chaotic spots. Each chaotic spot corresponds to a stochastic pump which drives the Arnold diffusion of the oscillators surrounding it, thus leading to their relaxation and thermalization. The most important mechanism of relaxation at long distances is provided by random migration of the chaotic spots along the chain, which bears analogy with variable-range hopping of electrons in strongly disordered solids. The cor- resonding macroscopic transport equations are obtained.

Bilayer graphene inclusions in rotational-stacked multilayer epitaxial graphene

Additional component in multi-layer epitaxial graphene grown on the C-terminated surface of SiC, which exhibits the characteristic electronic properties of a AB-stacked graphene bilayer, is identified in magneto-optical response of this material. We show that these inclusions represent a well-defined platform for accurate magneto-spectroscopy of unperturbed graphene bilayers.

Effect of a magnetic field on the two-phonon Raman scattering in graphene

We have studied, both experimentally and theoretically, the change of the so-called 2D band of the Raman scattering spectrum of graphene (the two-phonon peak near 2700 cm-1) in an external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the graphene crystal plane at liquid helium temperature. A shift to lower frequency and broadening of this band is observed as the magnetic field is increased from 0 to 33 T. At fields up to 5--10 T the changes are quadratic in the field while they become linear at higher magnetic fields. This effect is explained by the curving of the quasiclassical trajectories of the photo-excited electrons and holes in the magnetic field, which enables us (i) to extract the electron inelastic scattering rate, and (ii) to conclude that electronic scattering accounts for about half of the measured width of the 2D peak.

Graphene Mode-Locked Ultrafast Laser

Graphene is at the center of a significant research effort. Near-ballistic transport at room temperature and high mobility make it a potential material for nanoelectronics. Its electronic and mechanical properties are also ideal for micro and nanomechanical systems, thin-film transistors and transparent and conductive composites and electrodes. Here we exploit the optoelectronic properties of graphene to realize an ultrafast laser. A graphene-polymer composite is fabricated using wet-chemistry techniques. Pauli blocking following intense illumination results in saturable absorption, independent of wavelength. This is used to passively mode-lock an Erbium-doped fibre laser working at 1559nm, with a 5.24nm spectral bandwidth and ~460fs pulse duration, paving the way to graphene-based photonics.

Electron-electron interactions and doping dependence of the two-phonon Raman intensity in graphene

Raman spectroscopy is a fast, non-destructive means to characterize graphene samples. In particular, the Raman spectra show a significant dependence on doping. While the change in position and width of the G peak can be explained by the non-adiabatic Kohn anomaly at $Γ$, the significant doping dependence of the 2D peak intensity has not been explained yet. Here we show that this is due to a combination of electron-phonon and electron-electron scattering. Under full resonance, the photogenerated electron-hole pairs can scatter not just with phonons, but also with doping-induced electrons or holes, and this changes the intensity. We explain the doping dependence and show how it can be used to determine the corresponding electron-phonon coupling. This is higher than predicted by density-functional theory, as a consequence of renormalization by Coulomb interactions.
