Living with Ghosts and their Radiative Corrections

The role of higher derivative operators in 4D effective field theories is discussed in both non-supersymmetric and supersymmetric contexts. The approach, formulated in the Minkowski space-time, shows that theories with higher derivative operators do not always have an improved UV behaviour, due to subtleties related to the analytical continuation from the Minkowski to the Euclidean metric. This continuation is further affected at the dynamical level due to a field-dependence of the poles of the Green functions of the particle-like states, for curvatures of the potential of order unity in ghost mass units. The one-loop scalar potential in lambda*phi^4 theory with a single higher derivative term is shown to have infinitely many counterterms, while for a very large mass of the ghost the usual 4D renormalisation is recovered. In the supersymmetric context of the O'Raifeartaigh model of spontaneous supersymmetry breaking with a higher derivative (supersymmetric) operator, it is found that quadratic divergences are present in the one-loop self-energy of the scalar field. They arise with a coefficient proportional to the amount of supersymmetry breaking and suppressed by the scale of the higher derivative operator. This is also true in the Wess-Zumino model with higher derivatives and explicit soft breaking of supersymmetry. In both models, the UV logarithmic behaviour is restored in the decoupling limit of the ghost.

Higher Derivative Operators from Scherk-Schwarz Supersymmetry Breaking on T^2/Z_2

In orbifold compactifications on T^2/Z_2 with Scherk-Schwarz supersymmetry breaking, it is shown that (brane-localised) superpotential interactions and (bulk) gauge interactions generate at one-loop higher derivative counterterms to the mass of the brane (or zero-mode of the bulk) scalar field. These brane-localised operators are generated by integrating out the bulk modes of the initial theory which, although supersymmetric, is nevertheless non-renormalisable. It is argued that such operators, of non-perturbative origin and not protected by non-renormalisation theorems, are generic in orbifold compactifications and play a crucial role in the UV behaviour of the two-point Green function of the scalar field self-energy. Their presence in the action with unknown coefficients prevents one from making predictions about physics at (momentum) scales close to/above the compactification scale(s). Our results extend to the case of two dimensional orbifolds, previous findings for S^1/Z_2 and S^1/(Z_2 x Z_2') compactifications where brane-localised higher derivative operators are also dynamically generated at loop level, regardless of the details of the supersymmetry breaking mechanism. We stress the importance of these operators for the hierarchy and the cosmological constant problems in compactified theories.

Higher Derivative Operators from Transmission of Supersymmetry Breaking on S_1/Z_2

We discuss the role that higher derivative operators play in field theory orbifold compactifications on S_1/Z_2 with local and non-local (Scherk-Schwarz) breaking of supersymmetry. Integrating out the bulk fields generates brane-localised higher derivative counterterms to the mass of the brane (or zero-mode of the bulk) scalar field, identified with the Higgs field in many realistic models. Both Yukawa and gauge interactions are considered and the one-loop results found can be used to study the ``running'' of the scalar field mass with respect to the momentum scale in 5D orbifolds. In particular this allows the study of the behaviour of the mass under UV scaling of the momentum. The relation between supersymmetry breaking and the presence of higher derivative counterterms to the mass of the scalar field is investigated. This shows that, regardless of the breaking mechanism, (initial) supersymmetry cannot, in general, prevent the emergence of such operators. Some implications for phenomenology of the higher derivative operators are also presented.

Higher Derivative Operators as Counterterms in Orbifold Compactifications

In the context of 5D N=1 supersymmetric models compactified on S_1/Z_2 or S_1/(Z_2 x Z_2') orbifolds and with brane-localised superpotential, higher derivative operators are generated radiatively as one-loop counterterms to the mass of the (brane or zero mode of the bulk) scalar field. It is shown that the presence of such operators which are brane-localised is not related to the mechanism of supersymmetry breaking considered (F-term, discrete or continuous Scherk-Schwarz breaking) and initial supersymmetry does not protect against the dynamical generation of such operators. Since in many realistic models the scalar field is commonly regarded as the Higgs field, and the higher derivative operators seem a generic presence in orbifold compactifications, we stress the importance of these operators for solving the hierarchy problem.

Casimir Energies for 6D Supergravities Compactified on T_2/Z_N with Wilson Lines

We compute (as functions of the shape and Wilson-line moduli) the one-loop Casimir energy induced by higher-dimensional supergravities compactified from 6D to 4D on 2-tori, and on some of their Z_N orbifolds. Detailed calculations are given for a 6D scalar field having an arbitrary 6D mass m, and we show how to extend these results to higher-spin fields for supersymmetric 6D theories. Particular attention is paid to regularization issues and to the identification of the divergences of the potential, as well as the dependence of the result on m, including limits for which m^2 A<< 1 and m^2 A>> 1 where A is the volume of the internal 2 dimensions. Our calculation extends those in the literature to very general boundary conditions for fields about the various cycles of these geometries. The results have potential applications towards Supersymmetric Large Extra Dimensions (SLED) as a theory of the Dark Energy. First, they provide an explicit calculation within which to follow the dependence of the result on the mass of the bulk states which travel within the loop, and for heavy masses these results bear out the more general analysis of the UV-sensitivity obtained using heat-kernel methods. Second, because the potentials we find describe the dynamics of the classical flat directions of these compactifications, within SLED they would describe the present-day dynamics of the Dark Energy.

Higher Derivative Operators as loop counterterms in one-dimensional field theory orbifolds

Using a 5D N=1 supersymmetric toy-model compactified on S_1/(Z_2 x Z_2'), with a ``brane-localised'' superpotential, it is shown that higher (dimension) derivative operators are generated as one-loop counterterms to the (mass)^2 of the zero-mode scalar field, to ensure the quantum consistency of the model. Such operators are just a result of the compactification and integration of the bulk modes. They are relevant for the UV momentum scale dependence of the (mass)^2 of the zero-mode scalar field, regarded as a Higgs field in more realistic models. While suppressed for a small compactification radius R, these operators can affect the predictive power of models with a large value for R. A general method is also provided for a careful evaluation of infinite sums of 4D divergent loop-integrals (of Feynman diagrams) present in field theory orbifolds. With minimal changes, this method can be applied to specific orbifold models for a simple evaluation of their radiative corrections and the overall divergences.

Regularisation Techniques for the Radiative Corrections of Wilson lines and Kaluza-Klein states

Within an effective field theory framework we compute the most general structure of the one-loop corrections to the 4D gauge couplings in one- and two-dimensional orbifold compactifications with non-vanishing constant gauge background (Wilson lines). Although such models are non-renormalisable, we keep the analysis general by considering the one-loop corrections in three regularisation schemes: dimensional regularisation (DR), Zeta-function regularisation (ZR) and proper-time cut-off regularisation (PT). The relations among the results obtained in these schemes are carefully addressed. With minimal re-definitions of the parameters involved, the results obtained for the radiative corrections can be applied to most orbifold compactifications with one or two compact dimensions. The link with string theory is discussed. We mention a possible implication for the gauge couplings unification in such models.

Compact Dimensions and their Radiative Mixing

For one and two dimensional field theory orbifolds we compute in the DR scheme the full dependence on the momentum scale (q) of the one-loop radiative corrections to the 4D gauge coupling. Imposing a discrete "shift" symmetry of summing the infinite towers of associated Kaluza-Klein (KK) modes, it is shown that higher dimension operators are radiatively generated as one-loop counterterms for the case of two (but not for one) compact dimension(s). They emerge as a ``radiative mixing'' of effects (Kaluza-Klein infinite sums) associated with both compact dimensions. Particular attention is paid to the link of the one-loop corrections with their counterparts computed in infrared regularised 4D N=1 heterotic string orbifolds with N=2 sectors. The correction from these sectors usually ignores higher order terms in the IR string regulator (lambda_s->0) of type lambda_s ln(alpha'), but these become relevant in the field theory limit alpha'->0. Such terms ultimately re-emerge in pure field theory calculations of $Π(q^2)$ as higher dimension one-loop counterterms. We stress the importance of such terms for the unification of gauge couplings and for the predicted value of the string scale.

Wilson lines corrections to gauge couplings from a field theory approach

Using an effective field theory approach, we address the effects on the gauge couplings of one and two additional compact dimensions in the presence of a constant background (gauge) field. Such background fields are a generic presence in models with extra dimensions and can be employed for gauge symmetry breaking mechanisms in the context of 4D N=1 supersymmetric models. The structure of the ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) divergences that the gauge couplings develop in the presence of Wilson line vev's is investigated. One-loop radiative corrections to the gauge couplings due to overlapping effects of the compact dimensions and Wilson line vev's are computed for generic 4D N=1 models. Values of Wilson lines vev's corresponding to points (in the ``moduli'' space) of enhanced gauge symmetry cannot be smoothly reached {\it perturbatively} from those corresponding to the broken phase. The one-loop corrections are compared to their (heterotic) string counterpart in the ``field theory'' limit alpha'->0 to show remarkably similar results when no massless states are present in a Kaluza-Klein tower. An additional correction to the gauge coupling exists in the effective field theory approach when for specific Wilson lines vev's massless Kaluza-Klein states are present. This correction is not recoverable by the limit alpha'->0 of the (infrared regularised) string because the infrared regularisation limit and the limit alpha'->0 of the string result do not commute.

On Gauge couplings, "Large" extra-dimensions and the limit alpha'->0 of the String

Using an effective field theory (EFT) approach for a generic model with two additional dimensions compactified on a two-torus, we compute the total one-loop radiative corrections to the gauge couplings due to associated Kaluza-Klein massive and massless states. A consistent treatment of both infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) divergences shows a connection via infrared regulator effects between the massless and massive sectors of a compactified theory. A new correction to the gauge couplings is found such that their UV behaviour is sensitive to IR regulator dependent effects in the sector of (infinitely many) massive modes. This correction is a one-loop UV-IR mixing effect due to infinitely many Kaluza-Klein modes and exists for two compact dimensions. The link with string theory is addressed to show that this correction, logarithmic in the UV scale, cannot be recovered from known (infrared regularised) string calculations in the field theory ``limit'' alpha'->0. We explain the origin of this discrepancy and address some of its implications.

String corrections to gauge couplings from a field theory approach

An effective field theory approach is introduced to compute one-loop radiative corrections to the gauge couplings due to Kaluza-Klein states associated with a two-torus compactification. The results are compared with those of the string in the field theory ``limit'' alpha'-> 0. The whole U and the leading T moduli dependence of the gauge dependent part of the string corrections to gauge couplings can be recovered using the effective field theory approach.

TeV-scale Z' bosons in intersecting D-brane SM-like models

Recent string constructions with intersecting D6 and D5 brane models succeeded in predicting in the low energy limit a symmetry group and a fermionic spectrum similar to that of the SM. In such constructions additional U(1) fields are a generic presence and they (or linear combinations thereof) become massive through a string mechanism which couples them to RR two-forms. $U(1)_Y$ of hypercharge emerges as a linear combination of the initial U(1) symmetries while the massive U(1) fields induce (through mixing with Z boson) corrections on Z mass. $ρ$ parameter constraints on the latter allow one to set lower bounds on the string scale in the TeV region. These can then be used to {\it predict} lower bounds on the masses of the additional $Z'$ bosons, without specific assumptions about the compactification volume.

U(1) masses in intersecting D-brane SM-like models

For recently constructed classes of D6-brane models, yielding the Standard Model fermion spectrum and gauge symmetry, we compute lower bounds on the masses of new U(1) fields that such models predict in addition to the hypercharge $U(1)_Y$. In models with extra dimensions, generic uncertainties due to unknown values of the compactification radii of the extra dimensions affect the value of the string scale and thus the predictive power of such models. Using $ρ$ parameter and Z-U(1) mixing-angle constraints we show how to avoid such uncertainties, to provide lower mass bounds for the additional U(1) fields. These are in the region above 750 GeV for mixing angles less than $1.5 \times 10^{-3}$ (and as low as 550 GeV for mixing angles of $3\times 10^{-3}$).

TeV-Scale Z' Bosons from D-branes

Generic D-brane string models of particle physics predict the existence of extra U(1) gauge symmetries beyond hypercharge. These symmetries are not of the E_6 class but rather include the gauging of Baryon and Lepton numbers as well as certain Peccei-Quinn-like symmetries. Some of the U(1)'s have triangle anomalies, but they are cancelled by a Green-Schwarz mechanism. The corresponding gauge bosons typically acquire a mass of order the string scale M_S by combining with two-index antisymmetric fields coming from the closed string sector of the theory. We argue that in string models with a low string scale M_S proportional to 1-10 TeV, the presence of these generic U(1)'s may be amenable to experimental test. Present constraints from electroweak precision data already set important bounds on the mass of these extra gauge bosons. In particular, for large classes of models, rho-parameter constraints imply M_S >= 1.5 TeV. In the present scheme some fraction of the experimentally measured Z^0 mass would be due not to the Higgs mechanism, but rather to the mixing with these closed string fields. We give explicit formulae for recently constructed classes of intersecting D6- and D5-brane models yielding the Standard Model (SM) fermion spectrum.

String Threshold corrections from Field Theory

A field theory approach to summing threshold effects to the gauge couplings in a two-torus compactification is presented and the link with the (heterotic) string calculation is carefully investigated. We analyse whether the complete UV behaviour of the theory may be described on pure field theory grounds, as due to momentum modes only, and address the role of the winding modes, not included by the field theory approach. ``Non-decoupling'' effects in the low energy limit, due to a small dimension are discussed. The role of modular invariance in ensuring a finite (heterotic) string result is addressed.

Stability of the Higgs mass in theories with extra dimensions

We analyze the ultraviolet stability of the Higgs mass in recently proposed Kaluza-Klein models compactified on S_1/Z_2 or S_1/(Z_2\times Z_2'), both at the field theory and string theory level. Fayet-Iliopoulos terms of U(1) hypercharge are shown to be of vital importance for this discussion. Models with a single Higgs doublet seem to be generically affected by quadratic divergences.

A note on two-loop effects in the DMSSM

We investigate the proposed ``D-brane alternative'' to the MSSM model (DMSSM) which is a type II B string orientifold model with N=1 supersymmetry, three generations and a $SU(3)\times SU(2)_R\times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_{B-L}$ gauge group. An accurate analysis at two-loop level is performed to show that unification constraints predict a ``left-right'' symmetry breaking scale in the TeV region. The exact value of this scale is the result of the competing effects of the two loop terms against the low energy supersymmetric threshold effects. The model accommodates logarithmic unification of the gauge couplings at an intermediate scale of $10^{12}$ GeV and the necessary conditions to achieve this are addressed.

Gauge corrections and FI-term in 5D KK theories

In the context of a five dimensional N=1 Kaluza Klein model compactified on S_1/Z_2 x Z_2' we compute the one-loop gauge corrections to the self energy of the (zero-mode) scalar field. The result is quadratically divergent due to the appearance of a Fayet-Iliopoulos term.
