Expression of Interest for a Comprehensive New Detector at RHIC II

There are compelling physics questions to be addressed by a new comprehensive detector at a future, high-luminosity RHIC II collider. These form the basis for this Expression of Interest. What precisely are the properties of the strongly-coupled Quark Gluon Plasma (sQGP)? Can a more weakly interacting QGP state be formed and investigated at RHIC? How do particles acquire mass and what is the effect of chiral symmetry restoration on hadronization in a dense medium? What is the chiral structure of the QCD vacuum and its influence on and contributions of different QCD vacuum states to the masses of particles? Is there another phase of matter at low Bjorken-x, i.e. the Color Glass Condensate (CGC)? If present, what are its features and how does it evolve into the QGP? If not, are parton distribution functions understood at low Bjorken-x and can they describe particle production? What are the structure and dynamics inside the proton, including parton spin and orbital angular momentum? What are the contributions of gluons and the QCD sea to the polarization of the proton? What is the flavor-dependence? Are there tests for new physics beyond the Standard Model from spin measurements at RHIC II (such as parity-violating interactions)? We propose that a new comprehensive detector system is needed for RHIC II to address these questions adequately and in an effective way.

Generalized Isoscaling of Isotopic Distributions

Generalized isoscaling relationships are proposed that may permit one to relate the isotopic distributions of systems that may not be at the same temperature. The proposed relationships are applied to multifragmentation excitation functions for central Kr+Nb and Ar+Sc collisions.

Hadron production in Au-Au collisions at RHIC

We present an analysis of particle production yields measured in central Au-Au collisions at RHIC in the framework of the statistical thermal model. We demonstrate that the model extrapolated from previous analyses at SPS and AGS energy is in good agreement with the available experimental data at $\sqrt s=130$ GeV implying a high degree of chemical equilibration. Performing a $χ^2$ fit to the data, the range of thermal parameters at chemical freezeout is determined. At present, the best agreement of the model and the data is obtained with the baryon chemical potential $μ_B\simeq 46\pm 5$ MeV and temperature $T\simeq 174\pm 7$ MeV. More ratios, such as multistrange baryon to meson, would be required to further constrain the chemical freezeout conditions. Extrapolating thermal parameters to higher energy, the predictions of the model for particle production in Au-Au reactions at $\sqrt s=200$ GeV are also given.

Inclusive Dielectron Cross Sections in p+p and p+d Interactions at Beam Energies from 1.04 to 4.88 GeV

Measurements of dielectron production in p+p and p+d collisions with beam kinetic energies from 1.04 to 4.88 GeV are presented. The differential cross section is presented as a function of invariant pair mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity. The shapes of the mass spectra and their evolution with beam energy provide information about the relative importance of the various dielectron production mechanisms in this energy regime. The p+d to p+p ratio of the dielectron yield is also presented as a function of invariant pair mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity. The shapes of the transverse momentum and rapidity spectra from the p+d and p+p systems are found to be similar to one another for each of the beam energies studied. The beam energy dependence of the integrated cross sections is also presented.
