Edge-on galaxies relative to edge-on view of the Local Supercluster

Cosmological theories suggest that the angular momentum of galaxies should be closely linked to the structure of the cosmic web. The Local Supercluster is the closest and most studied structure where the orientation of galaxy spins can be studied. As noted by Navarro et al. (2004), the use of edge-on galaxies greatly simplifies this task by reducing it to an analysis of the distribution of position angles in the Supergalactic coordinates. We reexamine this correlation using modern catalogs that allow us to perform a more robust statistical analysis. We test the dependence on redshift, spatial position, luminosity, and color. We find that the spins of galaxies with stellar mass $M_*<10^{8.7}$ $M_\odot$ show a weak tendency to be aligned perpendicular to the plane of the Local Supercluster at the 2-sigma level. Other subsamples do not show statistically significant correlations.

Selecting active matter according to motility in an acoustofluidic setup: Self-propelled particles and sperm cells

Active systems -- including sperm cells, living organisms like bacteria, fish, birds, or active soft matter systems like synthetic ''microswimmers'' -- are characterized by motility, i.e., the ability to propel using their own ''engine''. Motility is the key feature that distinguishes active systems from passive or externally driven systems. In a large ensemble, motility of individual species can vary in a wide range. Selecting active species according to their motility represents an exciting and challenging problem. We propose a new method for selecting active species based on their motility using an acoustofluidic setup where highly motile species escape from the acoustic trap. This is demonstrated in simulations and in experiments with self-propelled Janus particles and human sperm. The immediate application of this method is selecting highly motile sperm for medically assisted reproduction (MAR). Due to the tunable acoustic trap, the proposed method is more flexible than the existing passive microfluidic methods. The proposed selection method based on motility can also be applied to other active systems that require selecting highly motile species or removing immotile species.

2024 Roadmap on Magnetic Microscopy Techniques and Their Applications in Materials Science

Considering the growing interest in magnetic materials for unconventional computing, data storage, and sensor applications, there is active research not only on material synthesis but also characterisation of their properties. In addition to structural and integral magnetic characterisations, imaging of magnetization patterns, current distributions and magnetic fields at nano- and microscale is of major importance to understand the material responses and qualify them for specific applications. In this roadmap, we aim to cover a broad portfolio of techniques to perform nano- and microscale magnetic imaging using SQUIDs, spin center and Hall effect magnetometries, scanning probe microscopies, x-ray- and electron-based methods as well as magnetooptics and nanoMRI. The roadmap is aimed as a single access point of information for experts in the field as well as the young generation of students outlining prospects of the development of magnetic imaging technologies for the upcoming decade with a focus on physics, materials science, and chemistry of planar, 3D and geometrically curved objects of different material classes including 2D materials, complex oxides, semi-metals, multiferroics, skyrmions, antiferromagnets, frustrated magnets, magnetic molecules/nanoparticles, ionic conductors, superconductors, spintronic and spinorbitronic materials.

Evidence of The Anomalous Fluctuating Magnetic State by Pressure Driven 4f Valence Change in EuNiGe$_3$

In rare-earth compounds with valence fluctuation, the proximity of the 4f level to the Fermi energy leads to instabilities of the charge configuration and the magnetic moment. Here, we provide direct experimental evidence for an induced magnetic polarization of the Eu$^{3+}$ atomic shell with J=0, due to intra-atomic exchange and spin-orbital coupling interactions with Eu$^{2+}$ atomic shell. By applying external pressure, a transition from antiferromagnetic to a fluctuating behavior in a EuNiGe$_3$ single crystals is probed. Magnetic polarization is observed for both valence states of Eu$^{2+}$ and Eu$^{3+}$ across the entire pressure range. The anomalous magnetism is discussed in terms of a homogeneous intermediate valence state where frustrated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya couplings are enhanced by the onset of spin-orbital interaction and engender a chiral spin-liquid-like precursor.

The Edge-on Galaxies in the Pan-STARRS survey (EGIPS)

We present a catalogue of 16551 edge-on galaxies created using the public DR2 data of the Pan-STARRS survey. The catalogue covers the three quarters of the sky above Dec.=-30 degrees. The galaxies were selected using a convolutional neural network, trained on a sample of edge-on galaxies identified earlier in the SDSS survey. This approach allows us to dramatically improve the quality of the candidate selection and perform a thorough visual inspection in a reasonable amount of time. The catalogue provides homogeneous information on astrometry, SExtractor photometry, and non-parametric morphological statistics of the galaxies. The photometry is reliably for objects in the 13.8-17.4 r-band magnitude range. According to the HyperLeda database, redshifts are known for about 63 percent of the galaxies in the catalogue. Our sample is well separated into the red sequence and blue cloud galaxy populations. The edge-on galaxies of the red sequence are systematically Delta(g-i)~0.1 mag redder than galaxies oriented at an arbitrary angle to the observer. We found a variation of the galaxy thickness with the galaxy colour. The red sequence galaxies are thicker than the galaxies of the blue cloud. In the blue cloud, on average, thinner galaxies turn out to be bluer. In the future, based on this catalogue it is intended to explore the three-dimensional structure of galaxies of different morphologies, as well as to study the scaling relations for discs and bulges.

The complete micromagnetic characterization of asymmetrically sandwiched ferromagnetic films

The magnetic properties of ferromagnetic thin films down to the nanoscale are ruled by the exchange stiffness, anisotropies and the effects of magnetic fields. As surfaces break inversion symmetry, an additional effective chiral exchange is omnipresent in any magnetic nanostructure. These so-called Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI) affect all inhomogeneous magnetic states either subtly or spectacularly. E.g., DMIs cause a chirality selection of the rotation sense and can fix the local rotation axis for the magnetization in domain walls (DW). But, they can stabilize also entirely different twisted magnetic structures. The chiral skyrmions a two-dimensional particle-like topological soliton is the ultimately smallest of these objects, which currently is targetted as a possible information carrier in novel spintronic devices. Observation and quantification of the chiral exchange effects provide for the salient point in understanding magnetic properties in ultrathin films and other nanostructures. An easy and reliable method to determine the DMI constant as materials parameter of asymmetric thin films is the crucial problem. Here, we put forth an experimental approach for the determination of the complete set of the micromagnetic parameters. Quasi-static Kerr microcopy observations of DW creep motion and equilibrium sizes of circular magnetic objects in combination with standard magnetometry are used to derive a consistent set of these materials parameters in polycrystalline ultrathin film systems, namely CrOx/Co/Pt stacks. The quantified micromagnetic model for these films identifies the circular magnetic objects, as seen by the optical microscopy, as ordinary bubble domains with homochiral walls. From micromagnetic calculations, the chiral skyrmions stabilized by the DMI in these films are shown to have diameters in the range 40-200nm, too small to be observed by optical microscopy.

Ultrafast electron-phonon-magnon interactions at noble metal-ferromagnet interfaces

Ultrafast optical excitation of gold-cobalt bilayers triggers the nontrivial interplay between the electronic, acoustic, and magnetic degrees of freedom. Laser-heated electrons generated at the gold-air interface diffuse through the layer of gold and strongly overheat the lattice in cobalt resulting in the emission of ultrashort acoustic pulses and generation of exchange-coupled magnons. Time-resolved optical measurements allow for extracting the thermal boundary (Kapitza) resistances at metal/metal interfaces and the hot electron diffusion length in ferromagnetic materials. Both the experimental data and the analytical treatment of the two-temperature model reveal the role of the Kapitza resistance in transient lattice overheating.

Discovery of an unusual bright eclipsing binary with the longest known period: TYC 2505-672-1 / MASTER OT J095310.04+335352.8

We report on the MASTER Global Robotic Net discovery of an eclipsing binary, MASTER OT J095310.04+335352.8, previously known as unremarkable star TYC 2505-672-1, which displays extreme orbital parameters. The orbital period P=69.1 yr is more than 2.5 times longer than that of epsilon-Aurigae, which is the previous record holder. The light curve is characterized by an extremely deep total eclipse with a depth of more than 4.5 mag, which is symmetrically shaped and has a total duration of 3.5 yrs. The eclipse is essentially gray. The spectra acquired with the Russian 6 m BTA telescope both at minimum and maximum light mainly correspond to an M0-1III--type red giant, but the spectra taken at the bottom of eclipse show small traces of a sufficiently hot source. The observed properties of this system can be better explained as the red giant eclipsed by a large cloud (the disk) of small particles surrounding the invisible secondary companion.

Detection of shorter-than-skin-depth acoustic pulses in a metal film via transient reflectivity

The detection of ultrashort laser-generated acoustic pulses at a metal surface and the reconstruction of the acoustic strain profile are investigated. A 2 ps-long acoustic pulse generated in an SrRuO$_{3}$ layer propagates through an adjacent gold layer and is detected at its surface by a reflected probe pulse. We show that the intricate shape of the transient reflectivity waveform and the ability to resolve acoustic pulses shorter than the optical skin depth are controlled by a single parameter, which is determined by the ratio of the real and imaginary parts of the photoelastic constant of the material. We also demonstrate a Fourier transform-based algorithm that can be used to extract acoustic strain profiles from transient reflectivity measurements.

A coupling pair of dwarfs in Lynx

We report on discovery of unique binary system of dIr galaxies which looks like a low surface brightness tidal stream in the halo of another dwarf galaxy. Both the galaxies are detected in the HI line with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The pair components have absolute blue magnitudes -16.0 and -13.2, heliocentric radial velocities 1799 and 1842 km/s, and hydrogen masses-to-luminosity ratios 0.4 and 1.6 in solar units, respectively. The binary system is characterized by a high orbital mass-to-luminosity ratio of 49 in solar units and a short crossing time of 0.22 Gyr.

Low-Density Structures in the Local Universe. II. Nearby Cosmic Voids

We present the results of the search for spherical volumes containing no galaxies with luminosities brighter than the Magellanic Clouds in the Local Supercluster and its vicinity. Within a distance of 40 Mpc from us, 89 cosmic voids were discovered with the diameters of 24 to 12 Mpc, containing no galaxies with absolute magnitudes brighter than M_K < -18.4. A list of these voids and the sky distribution maps are given. It was found that 93% of spherical voids overlap, forming three more extended percolated voids (hypervoids). The largest of them, HV1, has 56 initial spherical cells and extends in a horseshoe shape, enveloping the Local Volume and the Virgo cluster. The Local Void (Tully, 1988) in the Hercules-Aquila region is the closest part of the HV1. Another hypervoid, HV2, contains 22 spherical voids in the Eridanus constellation, and the third compact hypervoid (HV3) comprises 6 spherical cells in the Bootes. The total volume of these voids incorporates about 30% of the Local Universe. Among 2906 dwarf galaxies excluded from the original sample (n = 10502) in the search for spherical volumes, only 68 are located in the voids we have discovered. They are characterized by late morphological types (85% are Ir, Im, BCD, Sm), absolute magnitudes M_B ranging from -13.0 to -16.7, moderate star formation rates (log SSFR ~ -10 M_sun/(yr*L_sun) and gas reserves per luminosity unit twice to three times larger than in the other dwarf galaxies located in normal environments. The dwarf population of the voids shows a certain tendency to sit shallow near the surfaces of cosmic voids.

Galaxies and Groups in the Local Supercluster

We present the catalog of galaxy groups in the Local Supercluster. Our algorithm bases on assumption that a total energy of physical pair of galaxies must be negative. About 54% of the galaxies in our sample have been gathered in 1082 groups. The groups are characterized by velocity dispersion 74 km/s and harmonic radius 204 kpc. These values are typical for small groups like Local Group or M81.

ACS imaging of 25 galaxies in nearby groups and in the field

We present HST/ACS images and color-magnitude diagrams for 25 nearby galaxies with radial velocities V_LG < 500 km/s. Distances are determined based on the luminosities of stars at the tip of the red giant branch that range from 2 Mpc to 12 Mpc. Two of the galaxies, NGC 4163 and IC 4662, are found to be the nearest known representatives of blue compact dwarf (BCD) objects. Using high-quality data on distances and radial velocities of 110 nearby field galaxies, we derive their mean Hubble ratio to be 68 km/(s Mpc) with standard deviation of 15 km/(s Mpc). Peculiar velocities of most of the galaxies, V_pec = V_LG - 68 D, follow a Gaussian distribution with sigma_v = 63 km/s, but with a tail towards high negative values. Our data displays the known correlation between peculiar velocity and galaxy elevation above the Local Supercluster plane. The small observed fraction of galaxies with high peculiar velocities, V_pec < -500 km/s, may be understood as objects associated with nearby groups (Coma I, Eridanus) outside the Local volume.
