Strongly-coupled quantum critical point in an all-in-all-out antiferromagnet

Dimensionality and symmetry play deterministic roles in the laws of Nature. They are important tools to characterize and understand quantum phase transitions, especially in the limit of strong correlations between spin, orbit, charge, and structural degrees of freedom. Using newly-developed, high-pressure resonant x-ray magnetic and charge diffraction techniques, we have discovered a quantum critical point in Cd2Os2O7 as the all-in-all-out (AIAO) antiferromagnetic order is continuously suppressed to zero temperature and, concomitantly, the cubic lattice structure continuously changes from space group Fd-3m to F-43m. Surrounded by three phases of different time reversal and spatial inversion symmetries, the quantum critical region anchors two phase lines of opposite curvature, with striking departures from a mean-field form at high pressure. As spin fluctuations, lattice breathing modes, and quasiparticle excitations interact in the quantum critical region, we argue that they present the necessary components for strongly-coupled quantum criticality in this three-dimensional compound.

Negative thermal expansion and magnetoelastic coupling in the breathing pyrochlore lattice material LiGaCr4S8

The physical properties of the spinel LiGaCr4S8 have been studied with neutron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements. The neutron diffraction and synchrotron X-ray diffraction data reveal negative thermal expansion (NTE) below 111(4) K. The magnetic susceptibility deviates from Curie-Weiss behavior with the onset of NTE. At low temperature a broad peak in the magnetic susceptibility at 10.3(3) K is accompanied by the return of normal thermal expansion. First principles calculations find a strong coupling between the lattice and the simulated magnetic ground state. These results indicate strong magnetoelastic coupling in LiGaCr4S8.

Anisotropic susceptibilities in the honeycomb Kitaev system $α$-RuCl$_{3}$

The magnetic insulator $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ is a promising candidate to realize Kitaev interactions on a quasi-2D honeycomb lattice. We perform extensive susceptibility measurements on single crystals of $α$-RuCl$_{3}$, including angle-dependence of the in-plane longitudinal and transverse susceptibilities, which reveal a unidirectional anisotropy within the honeycomb plane. By comparing the experimental results to a high-temperature expansion of a Kitaev-Heisenberg-$Γ$ spin Hamiltonian with bond anisotropy, we find excellent agreement with the observed phase shift and periodicity of the angle-resolved susceptibilities. Within this model, we show that the pronounced difference between in-plane and out-of-plane susceptibilities as well as the finite transverse susceptibility are rooted in strong symmetric off-diagonal $Γ$ spin exchange. The $Γ$ couplings and relationships between other terms in the model Hamiltonian are quantified by extracting relevant Curie-Weiss intercepts from the experimental data.

Unveiling the role of competing fluctuations at an unconventional quantum critical point

Quantum critical points (QCPs) are widely accepted as a source of a diverse set of collective quantum phases of matter. A central question is how the order parameters of phases near a QCP interact and determine the fundamental character of the critical dynamics which drive the quantum critical behavior. One of the most interesting proposals for the quantum critical behavior that occurs in correlated electron systems is that the behavior may arise from local, as opposed to long wavelength, critical fluctuations of the order parameter. The local criticality is believed to give rise to energy over temperature ($E/T$) scaling of the dynamic susceptibility with a fractional exponent near the quantum critical point (QCP). Here we show that $E/T$ scaling is indeed observed for CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ but on closer inspection, the fluctuations can be separated into two components, implying that multiple order parameters play an important role in the unconventional critical behavior. Additionally, when the fluctuations corresponding to the magnetically ordered side of the phase diagram are separated, they are found to be three dimensional and to obey the scaling behavior expected for long wavelength fluctuations near an itinerant antiferromagnetic QCP.

Destabilization of magnetic order in a dilute Kitaev spin liquid candidate

The insulating honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_{3}$ exhibits fractionalized excitiations that signal its proximity to a Kitaev quantum spin liquid (QSL) state, however, at $T=0$, fragile long-range magnetic order arises from non-Kitaev terms in the Hamiltonian. Spin vacancies in the form of Ir$^{3+}$ substituted for Ru are found to destabilize this long-range order. Neutron diffraction and bulk characterization of Ru$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$Cl$_{3}$ show that the magnetic ordering temperature is suppressed with increasing $x$ and evidence of zizag magnetic order is absent for $x>0.3$. Inelastic neutron scattering demonstrates that the signature of fractionalized excitations is maintained over the full range of $x$ investigated. The depleted lattice without magnetic order thus hosts a spin-liquid-like ground state that may indicate the relevance of Kitaev physics in the magnetically dilute limit of RuCl$_{3}$.

Antiferromagnetic resonance and terahertz continuum in $α-$RuCl$_3$

We report measurements of optical absorption in the zig-zag antiferromagnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ as a function of temperature, $T$, magnetic field, $B$, and photon energy, $\hbarω$ in the range $\sim$ 0.3 to 8.3 meV, using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. Polarized measurements show that 3-fold rotational symmetry is broken in the honeycomb plane from 2 K to 300 K. We find a sharp absorption peak at 2.56 meV upon cooling below the Néel temperature of 7 K at $B=0$ that we identify as magnetic-dipole excitation of a zero-wavevector magnon, or antiferromagnetic resonance (AFMR). With application of $B$, the AFMR broadens and shifts to lower frequency as long-range magnetic order is lost in a manner consistent with transitioning to a spin-disordered phase. From direct, internally calibrated measurement of the AFMR spectral weight, we place an upper bound on the contribution to the $dc$ susceptibility from a magnetic excitation continuum.

Terahertz Dielectric Analysis and Spin-Phonon Coupling in Multiferroic GeV$_4$S$_8$

We present an investigation of the multiferroic lacunar spinel compound GeV$_4$S$_8$ using time-domain terahertz spectroscopy. We find three absorptions which either appear or shift at the antiferromagnetic transition temperature, T$_N = 17$ K, as S=1 magnetic moments develop on vanadium tetrahedra. Two of these absorptions are coupled to the magnetic state and one only appears below the Néel temperature, and is interpreted as a magnon. We also observe isosbestic points in the dielectric constant in both the temperature and frequency domains. Further, we perform analysis on the isosbestic features to reveal an interesting collapse into a single curve as a function of both frequency and temperature, behavior which exists throughout the phase transitions. This analysis suggests the importance of spectral changes in the terahertz range which are linear in frequency and temperature.

LaCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_{x}$: A promising host of an elastic quantum critical point

Structural properties of LaCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_{x}$ have been investigated using neutron and x-ray diffraction, and resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS) measurements. Diffraction measurements indicate a continuous structural transition from orthorhombic ($Pnma$) to monoclinic ($P2_1/c$) structure. RUS measurements show softening of natural frequencies at the structural transition, consistent with the elastic nature of the structural ground state. The structural transition temperatures in LaCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_{x}$ decrease with Ag composition until the monoclinic phase is completely suppressed at $x_c$ = 0.225. All of the evidence is consistent with the presence of an elastic quantum critical point in LaCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_{x}$.

Controlling the topological sector of magnetic solitons in exfoliated Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ crystals

We investigate manifestations of topological order in monoaxial helimagnet Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ by performing transport measurements on ultra-thin crystals. Upon sweeping the magnetic field perpendicularly to the helical axis, crystals thicker than one helix pitch (48 nm) but much thinner than the magnetic domain size ($\sim$1 $μ$m) are found to exhibit sharp and hysteretic resistance jumps. We show that these phenomena originate from transitions between topological sectors with different number of magnetic solitons. This is confirmed by measurements on crystals thinner than 48 nm --in which the topological sector cannot change-- that do not exhibit any jump or hysteresis. Our results show the ability to deterministically control the topological sector of finite-size Cr$_{1/3}$NbS$_2$ and to detect inter-sector transitions by transport measurements.

Revisiting the ground state of CoAl$_2$O$_4$: comparison to the conventional antiferromagnet MnAl$_2$O$_4$

The A-site spinel material, CoAl2O4, is a physical realization of the frustrated diamond-lattice antiferromagnet, a model in which is predicted to contain unique incommensurate or `spin-spiral liquid' ground states. Our previous single-crystal neutron scattering study instead classified it as a `kinetically-inhibited' antiferromagnet, where the long ranged correlations of a collinear Neel ground state are blocked by the freezing of domain wall motion below a first-order phase transition at T* = 6.5 K. The current paper expands on our original results in several important ways. New elastic and inelastic neutron measurements are presented that show our initial conclusions are affected by neither the sample measured nor the instrument resolution, while measurements to temperatures as low as T = 250 mK limit the possible role being played by low-lying thermal excitations. Polarized diffuse neutron measurements confirm reports of short-range antiferromagnetic correlations and diffuse streaks of scattering, but major diffuse features are explained as signatures of overlapping critical correlations between neighboring Brillouin zones. Finally, and critically, this paper presents detailed elastic and inelastic measurements of magnetic correlations in a single-crystal of MnAl2O4, which acts as an unfrustrated analogue to CoAl2O4. The unfrustrated material is shown to have a classical continuous phase transition to Neel order at T_N = 39 K, with collective spinwave excitations and Lorentzian-like critical correlations which diverge at the transition. Direct comparison between the two compounds indicates that CoAl2O4 is unique, not in the nature of high-temperature diffuse correlations, but rather in the nature of the frozen state below T*. The higher level of cation inversion in the MnAl2O4 sample indicates that this novel behavior is primarily an effect of greater next-nearest-neighbor exchange.

Candidate Elastic Quantum Critical Point in LaCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$

The structural properties of LaCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ have been studied using neutron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, and heat capacity measurements. The continuous orthorhombic-monoclinic structural phase transition in LaCu$_{6}$ is suppressed linearly with Au substitution until a complete suppression of the structural phase transition occurs at the critical composition, $x_{c}$ = 0.3. Heat capacity measurements at low temperatures indicate residual structural instability at $x_c$ that extends well into the orthorhombic phase. The instability is ferroelastic in nature, with density functional theory (DFT) calculations showing negligible coupling to electronic states near the Fermi level. The data and calculations presented here are consistent with the zero temperature termination of a continuous structural phase transition suggesting that the LaCu$_{6-x}$Au$_x$ series hosts an elastic quantum critical point.

$μ$SR and magnetometry study of superconducting 5% Pt doped IrTe$_2$

We present magnetometry and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) measurements of the superconducting dichalcogenide Ir$_{0.95}$Pt$_{0.05}$Te$_2$. From both sets of measurements we calculate the penetration depth and thence superfluid density as a function of temperature. The temperature dependence of the superfluid densities from both sets of data indicate fully gapped superconductivity that can be fit to a conventional s-wave model and yiel fitting parameters consistent with a BCS weak coupling superconductor. We therefore see no evidence for exotic superconductivity in Ir$_{0.95}$Pt$_{0.05}$Te$_2$.

Dominant Kitaev interactions on the fcc lattice in iridate double perovskites La2BIrO6 (B=Mg, Zn)

We have performed inelastic neutron scattering experiments to investigate the magnetic excitations in the quasi-face-centered-cubic (fcc) iridate double perovskites La2ZnIrO6 and La2MgIrO6, which are characterized by A-type antiferromagnetic ground states. The neutron scattering data, which reveal gapped spin wave excitations with a very weak dispersion, are shown to be well-described by theoretical calculations on a model Hamiltonian with dominant Kitaev interactions. Our surprising finding shows that in contrast to honeycomb materials, where the Kitaev interaction manifests itself via complex magnetic order, even conventional magnetic orders in certain geometrically frustrated systems might owe their existence to unconventional Kitaev exchange.

Highly-anisotropic exchange interactions of $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ iridium moments on the fcc lattice in La$_2B$IrO$_6$ ($B$ $=$ Mg, Zn)

We have performed inelastic neutron scattering (INS) experiments to investigate the magnetic excitations in the weakly distorted face-centered-cubic (fcc) iridate double perovskites La$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ and La$_2$MgIrO$_6$, which are characterized by A-type antiferromagnetic ground states. The powder inelastic neutron scattering data on these geometrically frustrated $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ Mott insulators provide clear evidence for gapped spin wave excitations with very weak dispersion. The INS results and thermodynamic data on these materials can be reproduced by conventional Heisenberg-Ising models with significant uniaxial Ising anisotropy and sizeable second-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions. Such a uniaxial Ising exchange interaction is symmetry-forbidden on the ideal fcc lattice, so that it can only arise from the weak crystal distortions away from the ideal fcc limit. This may suggest that even weak distortions in $j_{\rm eff}=1/2$ Mott insulators might lead to strong exchange anisotropies. More tantalizingly, however, we find an alternative viable explanation of the INS results in terms of spin models with a dominant Kitaev interaction. In contrast to the uniaxial Ising exchange, the highly-directional Kitaev interaction is a type of exchange anisotropy which is symmetry-allowed even on the ideal fcc lattice. The Kitaev model has a magnon gap induced by quantum order-by-disorder, while weak anisotropies of the Kitaev couplings generated by the symmetry-lowering due to lattice distortions, can pin the order and enhance the magnon gap. Our findings highlight how even conventional magnetic orders in heavy transition metal oxides may be driven by highly-directional exchange interactions rooted in strong spin-orbit coupling.

Spin-orbit driven magnetic insulating state with ${J}_{\mathrm{eff}}\mathbf{=}1/2$ character in a 4d oxide

The unusual magnetic and electronic ground states of 5d iridates has been shown to be driven by intrinsically enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The influence of appreciable but reduced SOC in creating the manifested magnetic insulating states in 4d oxides is less clear, with one hurdle being the existence of such compounds. Here we present experimental and theoretical results on Sr$_4$RhO$_6$ that reveal SOC dominated behavior. Neutron measurements show the octahedra are both spatially separated and locally ideal, making the electronic ground state susceptible to alterations by SOC. Magnetic ordering is observed with a similar structure to an analogous ${J}_{\mathrm{eff}}\mathbf{=}1/2$ Mott iridate. We consider the underlying role of SOC in this rhodate with density functional theory and x-ray absorption spectroscopy and find a magnetic insulating ground state with ${J}_{\mathrm{eff}}\mathbf{=}1/2$ character.

Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions in CeCu$_{6-x}T_x$ ($T$ = Ag, Pd)

The structural and the magnetic properties of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.85) and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ (0 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.4) have been studied using neutron diffraction, resonant ultrasound spectroscopy (RUS), heat capacity, x-ray diffraction measurements and first principles calculations. The structural and magnetic phase diagrams of CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ as a function of Ag/Pd composition are reported. The end member, CeCu$_6$, undergoes a structural phase transition from an orthorhombic ($Pnma$) to a monoclinic ($P2_1/c$) phase at 240 K. In CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$, the structural phase transition temperature (${T_{s}}$) decreases linearly with Ag concentration and extrapolates to zero at $x_{S}$ $\approx$ 0.1. The structural transition in CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ remains unperturbed with Pd substitution within the range of our study. The lattice constant $b$ slightly decreases with Ag/Pd doping, whereas, $a$ and $c$ increase with an overall increase in the unit cell volume. Both systems, CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$ and CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$, exhibit a magnetic quantum critical point (QCP), at $x$ $\approx$ 0.2 and $x$ $\approx$ 0.05 respectively. Near the QCP, long range antiferromagnetic ordering takes place at an incommensurate wave vector ($δ_1$ 0 $δ_2$) where $δ_1 \sim 0.62$, $δ_2 \sim 0.25$, $x$ = 0.125 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Pd$_x$ and $δ_1 \sim 0.64$, $δ_2 \sim 0.3$, $x$ = 0.3 for CeCu$_{6-x}$Ag$_x$. The magnetic structure consists of an amplitude modulation of the Ce-moments which are aligned along the $c$-axis of the orthorhombic unit cell.

Emergent excitation at the magnetic metal-insulator transition in the pyrochlore osmate Cd2Os2O7

The rich physics manifested by 5d oxides falls outside the Mott-Hubbard paradigm used to successfully explain the electronic and magnetic properties of 3d oxides. Much consideration has been given to the extent to which strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), in the limit of increased bandwidth and reduced electron correlation, drives the formation of novel electronic states, as manifested through the existence of metal-insulator transitions (MITs). SOC is believed to play a dominant role in 5d5 systems such as iridates (Ir4+), undergoing MITs which may or may not be intimately connected to magnetic order, with pyrochlore and perovksite systems being examples of the former and latter, respectively. However, the role of SOC for other 5d configurations is less clear. For example, 5d3 (e.g Os5+) systems are expected to have an orbital singlet and consequently a reduced effect of SOC in the groundstate. The pyrochlore osmate Cd2Os2O7 nonetheless exhibits a MIT intimately entwined with magnetic order with phenomena similar to pyrochlore iridates. Here we report the first resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) measurements on an osmium compound, allowing us to determine the salient electronic and magnetic energy scales controlling the MIT in Cd2Os2O7, which we benchmark against detailed quantum chemistry calculations. In particular, we reveal the emergence at the MIT of a magnetic excitation corresponding to a superposition of multiple spin-flip processes from an Ising-like all-in/all-out magnetic groundstate. We discuss our results with respect to the role of SOC in magnetically mediated MITs in 5d systems

Evolution of competing magnetic order in the Jeff=1/2 insulating state of Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4

We investigate the magnetic properties of the series Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4 with neutron, resonant x-ray and magnetization measurements. The results indicate an evolution and coexistence of magnetic structures via a spin flop transition from ab-plane to c-axis collinear order as the 5d Ir4+ ions are replaced with an increasing concentration of 4d Ru4+ ions. The magnetic structures within the ordered regime of the phase diagram (x<0.3) are reported. Despite the changes in magnetic structure no alteration of the Jeff=1/2 ground state is observed. The behavior of Sr2Ir1-xRuxO4 is consistent with electronic phase separation and diverges from a standard scenario of hole doping. The role of lattice alterations with doping on the magnetic and insulating behavior is considered. The results presented here provide insight into the magnetic insulating states in strong spin-orbit coupled materials and the role perturbations play in altering the behavior.
