Incommensurate Charge Order Phase in Fe2OBO3 due to Geometrical Frustration

The temperature dependence of charge order in Fe2OBO3 was investigated by resistivity and differential scanning calorimetry measurements, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and synchrotron x-ray scattering, revealing an intermediate phase between room temperature and 340 K, characterized by coexisting mobile and immobile carriers, and by incommensurate superstructure modulations with temperature-dependent propagation vector (1/2,0,tau). The incommensurate modulations arise from specific anti-phase boundaries with low energy cost due to geometrical charge frustration.

NaV2O4: a Quasi-1D Metallic Antiferromagnet with Half-Metallic Chains

NaV2O4 crystals were grown under high pressure using a NaCl flux, and the crystals were characterized with X-ray diffraction, electrical resistivity, heat capacity, and magnetization. The structure of NaV2O4 consists of double chains of edge-sharing VO6 octahedra. The resistivity is highly anisotropic, with the resistivity perpendicular to the chains more than 20 times greater than that parallel to the chains. Magnetically, the intrachain interactions are ferromagnetic and the interchain interactions are antiferromagnetic; 3D antiferromagnetic order is established at 140 K. First principles electronic structure calculations indicate that the chains are half metallic. Interestingly, the case of NaV2O4 seems to be a quasi-1D analogue of what was found for half-metallic materials.

Coupling Between An Optical Phonon and the Kondo Effect

We explore the ultra-fast optical response of Yb_{14}MnSb_{11}, providing further evidence that this Zintl compound is the first ferromagnetic, under-screened Kondo lattice. These experiments also provide the first demonstration of coupling between an optical phonon mode and the Kondo effect.

Charge Order Superstructure with Integer Iron Valence in Fe2OBO3

Solution-grown single crystals of Fe2OBO3 were characterized by specific heat, Mossbauer spectroscopy, and x-ray diffraction. A peak in the specific heat at 340 K indicates the onset of charge order. Evidence for a doubling of the unit cell at low temperature is presented. Combining structural refinement of diffraction data and Mossbauer spectra, domains with diagonal charge order are established. Bond-valence-sum analysis indicates integer valence states of the Fe ions in the charge ordered phase, suggesting Fe2OBO3 is the clearest example of ionic charge order so far.

Orbital-Driven Electronic Structure Changes and the Resulting Optical Anisotropy of the Quasi-Two-Dimensional Spin Gap Compound La4Ru2O10

We investigated the electronic response of the quasi-two-dimensional spin gap compound La4Ru2O10 using optical spectroscopy. We observed drastic changes in the optical spectra as the temperature decreased, resulting in anisotropy in the electronic structure of the spin-singlet ground state. Using the orbital-dependent hopping analysis, we found that orbital ordering plays a crucial role in forming the spin gap state in the non-one-dimensional material.

Quantum spin correlations in an organometallic alternating sign chain

High resolution inelastic neutron scattering is used to study excitations in the organometallic magnet DMACuCl$_3$. The correct magnetic Hamiltonian describing this material has been debated for many years. Combined with high field bulk magnetization and susceptibility studies, the new results imply that DMACuCl$_3$ is a realization of the $S=1/2$ alternating antiferromagnetic-ferromagnetic (AFM-FM) chain. Coupled-cluster calculations are used to derive exchange parameters, showing that the AFM and FM interactions have nearly the same strength. Analysis of the scattering intensities shows clear evidence for inter-dimer spin correlations, in contrast to existing results for conventional alternating chains. The results are discussed in the context of recent ideas concerning quantum entanglement.

Determination of the infrared complex magneto-conductivity tensor in itinerant ferromagnets from Faraday and Kerr measurements

We present measurement and analysis techniques that allow the complete complex magneto-conductivity tensor to be determined from mid-infrared (11-1.6 micron; 100-800 meV) measurements of the complex Faraday (theta_F) and Kerr (theta_K) angles. Since this approach involves measurement of the geometry (orientation axis and ellipticity of the polarization) of transmitted and reflected light, no absolute transmittance or reflectance measurements are required. Thick film transmission and reflection equations are used to convert the complex theta_F and theta_K into the complex longitudinal conductivity sigma_xx and the complex transverse (Hall) conductivity sigma_xy. theta_F and theta_K are measured in a Ga_(1-x)Mn_xAs and SrRuO_3 films. The resulting sigma_xx is compared to the values obtained from conventional transmittance and reflectance measurements, as well as the results from Kramers-Kronig analysis of reflectance measurements on similar films.

The case for the bulk nature of the spectroscopic Luttinger liquid signatures observed in angle resolved photoemission of Li0.9Mo6O17

Angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) has been performed on quasi-one dimensional Li0.9Mo6O17 using photon energy 500 eV. Measured band dispersions are in agreement with those from both low photon energy measurements and band structure calculations. The momentum integrated ARPES spectrum is well fit by the finite temperature Luttinger liquid (LL)spectral function, with an anomalous exponent 0.6 that is the same within experimental uncertainty as the value found with photon energy 30 eV. These identical findings at both low and high photon energies are entirely consistent with reasoning based on the crystal structure, that the quasi-one dimensional chains lie two layers below the cleavage plane so that the observed spectroscopic LL behavior of Li0.9Mo6O17 is a bulk property.

Orbitally driven spin-singlet dimerization in $S$=1 La$_{4}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{10}$

Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Ru-$L_{2,3}$ edge we reveal that the Ru$^{4+}$ ions remain in the $S$=1 spin state across the rare 4d-orbital ordering transition and spin-gap formation. We find using local spin density approximation + Hubbard U (LSDA+U) band structure calculations that the crystal fields in the low temperature phase are not strong enough to stabilize the $S$=0 state. Instead, we identify a distinct orbital ordering with a significant anisotropy of the antiferromagnetic exchange couplings. We conclude that La$_{4}$Ru$_{2}$O$_{10}$ appears to be a novel material in which the orbital physics drives the formation of spin-singlet dimers in a quasi 2-dimensional $S$=1 system.

New Luttinger liquid physics from photoemission on Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$

Temperature dependent high resolution photoemission spectra of quasi-1 dimensional Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ evince a strong renormalization of its Luttinger liquid density-of-states anomalous exponent. We trace this new effect to interacting charge neutral critical modes that emerge naturally from the two-band nature of the material. Li$_{0.9}$Mo$_6$O$_{17}$ is shown thereby to be a paradigm material that is capable of revealing new Luttinger physics.

Magneto-Dielectric Effect in the S = 1/2 Quasi-Two Dimensional Antiferromagnet K2V3O8

We report the optical and magneto-optical properties of K2V3O8, an S=1/2 quasi-two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet. Local spin density approximation electronic structure calculations are used to assign the observed excitations and analyze the field dependent features. Two large magneto-optical effects, centered at ~1.19 and 2.5 eV, are attributed to field-induced changes in the V 4+ d to d on-site excitations due to modification of the local crystal field environment of the VO5 square pyramids with applied magnetic field. Taken together, the evidence for a soft lattice, the presence of vibrational fine structure on the sharp 1.19 eV magneto-optical feature, and the fact that these optical excitations are due to transitions from a nearly pure spin polarized V d state to hybridized states involving both V and O, suggest that the magneto-dielectric effect in K2V3O8 is driven by strong lattice coupling.

Temperature dependent bilayer ferromagnetism in Sr3Ru2O7

The Ruthenium based perovskites exhibit a wide variety of interesting collective phenomena related to magnetism originating from the Ru 4d electrons. Much remains unknown concerning the nature of magnetic fluctuations and excitations in these systems. We present results of detailed inelastic neutron scattering measurements of Sr3Ru2O7 as a function of temperature, probing the ferromagnetic fluctuations of the bilayer structure. A magnetic response is clearly visible for a range of temperatures, T = 3.8 K up to T = 100 K, and for energy transfers between 2 and 14 meV. These measurements indicate that the ferromagnetic fluctuations manifest in the bilayer structure factor persist to surprisingly large temperatures. This behavior may be related to the proximity of the system in zero magnetic field to the metamagnetic/ferromagnetic transition.

Pressure dependence of magnetic and superconducting transitions in sodium cobalt oxides NaxCoO2

The results of DC magnetization measurements under hydrostatic (helium-gas) pressure are reported for an ambient pressure superconductor Na0.35CoO2.1.4D2O and its precursor compound, the gamma-phase Na0.75CoO2 that is known to combine a metallic conductivity with an unusual magnetic state below ~22K. The obtained data allowed us to present for the first time the pressure dependence of the magnetic transition in a metallic sodium cobaltate system. This dependence appears to be positive, with the magnetic transition rapidly shifting towards higher temperatures when an applied pressure increases. We ascribe the observed effect to the pressure-induced enhancement of the out-of-plane antiferromagnetic coupling mediated by localized spins interactions (of either superexchange or RKKY type), the scenario consistent with the A-type antiferromagnetic state suggested by recent neutron-scattering data. As for the pressure effect on the superconductivity in Na0.35CoO2.1.4D2O, our measurements established negative and linear for the entire pressure range from 1 bar to 8.3 kbar pressure dependence of Tc, the behavior quite different from the reported by previous workers strong non-linearity of the Tc (P) dependence. Kondo Lattice Behavior in the Ordered Dilute Magnetic Semiconductor Yb_{14-x}La_xMnSb_{11}

We report Hall, magnetic, heat capacity and doping studies from single crystals of Yb_14MnSb_11 and Yb_13.3La_0.7MnSb_11. These heavily doped semiconducting compounds are ferromagnetic below 53 K and 39 K respectively. The renormalization of the carrier mass from 2 me near room temperature to 15 me at 5 K, plus the magnetic evidence for partial screening of the Mn magnetic moments suggest that these compounds represent rare examples of an underscreened Kondo lattice with T_K = 350 K.

Goldstone-Mode Phonon Dynamics in the Pyrochlore Cd2Re2O7

We have measured the polarized Raman scattering spectra of Cd2Re2O7, the first superconducting pyrochlore, as a function of temperature. For temperatures below the cubic-to-tetragonal structural phase transition (SPT) at 200K, a peak with B1 symmetry develops at zero frequency with divergent intensity. We identify this peak as the first observation of the Goldstone phonon in a crystalline solid. The Goldstone phonon is a collective excitation that exists due to the breaking of the continuous symmetry with the SPT. Its emergence coincides with that of a Raman-active soft mode. The order parameter for both features derives from an unstable doubly-degenerate vibration (with Eu symmetry) of the O1 atoms which drives the SPT.

Optical study of interactions in a d-electron Kondo lattice with ferromagnetism

We report on a comprehensive optical, transport and thermodynamic study of the Zintl compound Yb$_{14}$MnSb$_{11}$, demonstrating that it is the first ferromagnetic Kondo lattice compound in the underscreened limit. We propose a scenerio whereby the combination of Kondo and Jahn-Teller effects provides a consistent explanation of both transport and optical data.

Fermi surface evolution and Luttinger theorem in Na$_x$CoO$_2$: a systematic photoemission study

We report a systematic angle-resolved photoemission study on Na$_x$CoO$_2$ for a wide range of Na concentrations ($0.3 \leq x \leq 0.72$). In all the metallic samples at different $x$, we observed (i) only a single hole-like Fermi surface centered around $Γ$ and (ii) its area changes with $x$ according to the Luttinger theorem. We also observed a surface state that exhibits a larger Fermi surface area. The $e_g^\prime$ band and the associated small Fermi surface pockets near the $K$ points predicted by band calculations are found to ``sink'' below the Fermi energy in a manner almost independent of the doping and temperature.

Variation of Specific Heat with x and y in NaxCoO2-yH2O/D2O

We report specific heat measurements down to 0.4 K on the layered oxide Na$_x$CoO$_2\cdot\it{y}$H$_2$O/D$_2$O with 0 $\le$ $\it{x}$ $\le$ 0.74 and $\it{y}$ = 0 and 1.4. For the nonhydrated system ($\it{y}$ = 0), the electronic specific heat coefficient $γ_N$ and the Debye temperature $Θ_D$ vary nonmonotonically with $\it{x}$, both displaying minima when $\it{x}$ is close to 0.5. This indicates a systematic change of the electronic and vibrational structures with Na content. For both hydrated and deuterated systems ($\it{x}$ = 0.35 and $\it{y}$ = 1.4), the specific heat reveals a sharp peak with $Δ$C$_p \sim$ 45.5 mJ/mol-K at T$_c^{mid} \sim$ 4.7 K and an anomaly at T$_x \sim$ 0.8 K. While the origin of the later is unknown, the former corresponds to the superconducting transition. Interestingly, the electronic specific heat, after subtracting lattice and Schottky contributions, exhibits roughly T$^2$ behavior between 0.2T$_c$ and T$_c$. This can be explained by assuming an unconventional superconducting symmetry with line nodes. The results obtained under applied magnetic field further support this scenario.
